The Guild Season 4 Review

The Guild Season 4

Studio: Microsoft
Publisher: Siren Visual
Format: DVD
Release Date: December 16th, 2011
Price: $19.95- Available Here

Overview:
The Guild has become an internet phenomenon since it’s first season and continues to be one today. Whether it is it’s unique mixture of parody and tribute of massively multiplayer online role playing game players, or it’s inherent sadness surrounding the lives of it’s titular Guildies, there is a lot to engross yourself in with this popular web-series. So how does it’s fourth season weigh up?

Story:
For those picking this up following the third season, the story picks up right were it left off with Codex having come to the shocking realisation of her betrayal of The Guild. She decides to hide the act of betrayal from The Knights of Good for the mean time and things develop from there.

Fourth seasons are usually the point in which a show has finally found it’s grove and that is definitely the case here with The Guild. In most cases the third season marks the point in which a series solidifies it’s direction for the rest of it’s run, that is also true of the previous season which introduced villains and deeper plotting for the series all of which continue on in the fourth series.

Part of what makes The Guild so enjoyable is the fact that it is so relatable to it’s target audience. The majority of the people watching this show have most likely tangled themselves in an MMORPG at one point or another and this series dives into both the life of players of the game type and of gamers in general. All while not holding any bars when it comes to laying on the darkness underneath it’s zipping jokes and often crude humour.

The series’ heart is the condition of these people, each of them suffers a severe personality dysfunction and is socially inept. There are hints at the pasts of these people or their backgrounds but we never get the full picture and honestly, sometimes its better not knowing. All we need to know here is that these people are socially awkward and they clearly had something in their past that made them that way.

When it comes to humour, The Guild fires away at a rapid pace with each actor having great comedic timing. While some of the jokes fall flat, all in all this series is perfect for a good laugh. Unfortunately though a lot of the jokes rely on the viewer having some knowledge of video-games so some jokes may be lost on certain viewers.

For those who are in the know when it comes to gaming, there is a great amount for them to sink their teeth into when it comes to the content on show in The Guild, whether it be the rich characters and fully realised world, the humour, the drama or anything else The Guild has in it sleeve, there is so much enjoyment to find in this little series.

Visuals and Audio:
When it comes to the visuals of The Guild, there is not a whole lot to say other than that the sets used are incredibly memorable and the  world is fully realised by some incredibly well done presentation especially when you consider that this was a web-series. Being what it is, there is enough memorable aesthetics to get a passing grade.

The series does feature a pretty decent soundtrack, with of the course the opening and ending theme song being the most apparent track. While the opening track is catchy and well suited to the series when marathoning through these episodes it can without a doubt become an irritation at times. All in all though there is some pretty good work for the audio when it comes to a web-series.

Extras:
If you aren’t sure about buying this because of episode length, Siren Visual have given you plenty of reason when it comes to special features, with a plethora of goodies for viewers to dive into after they finish watching through each episode. My particular favourite was the stroke of brilliance known as ‘Game On’, which is a Bollywood Music parody, sung by none other than Zaboo and Codex. It’s a great little music video for a song that is incredibly catchy as well as humourous.

Not only that but there are plenty of other great extras packaged in such as ‘The Making of ‘Game On”, a Cheesybeard’s commercial, Audio commentary with the cast, creator, director and producer, a gag reel, a table read and even the script which is readable as a PDF file on your computer.

There is just so much packed into this DVD that it is an absolute steal for Siren’s asking price.

Overall:
The Guild, is a great comedy series for gamers. It is sure to bring them a lot of enjoyment as they find themselves relating to these characters more and more with each episode. Unfortunately that is also the problem with The Guild, in that it does not work as well when watched by someone outside of that audience. But the series never tries to be anything it’s not and that is a comedy series made by gamers for gamers. Whether you are a fan of the series already or a new comer, The Guild Season 4 is a great comedic series to spend some time with if you are the person it’s aiming to reach.

NIS America releasing Our Home’s Fox Deity, Pandora Hearts and Persona -trinity soul- standard editions January 24

Whenever NIS America releases a new anime, their standard practice is to release a premium edition version which, although it comes with a number of special bonuses such as a collectible art case, a fancy fully colored art book as well as the standard 2 disc package. However one of the drawbacks from the premium edition is that they usually cost around $69.99 for the premium edition, usually containing only 12 or 13 episodes.

However the more frugal and long waiting anime fan can now take advantage of NIS America’s new line of standard edition releases. A number of anime that they have released over the past year will be getting a standard edition release on January 24th. This includes Volumes 1 and 2 of Pandora Hearts, PERSONA -trinity soul- and Our Home’s Fox Deity. These volumes will run from $39.99 to $44.99 which is a decent discount for anime lovers. The standard editions will come in one DVD case with your standard box art and a few on-disc special features, so special feature lovers won’t miss out on everything. To pick up or pre-order these standard editions you can do so at NIS America’s online store.

Kaz Hirai to be new Sony president, Howard Stringer to remain chairman and CEO

0

It seems that a change-up may be occurring at Sony, one at the very top ranks of the company. Sony’s current “executive deputy president” Kazuo Hirai seems to be advancing his position and taking over the role of President of Sony. This news comes out of the Japanese website Nikkei as the website reports that Kaz Hirai will be taking over the role in the coming months.

This means that the current president Sir Howard Stringer will be losing at least one of his titles, though he will still be listed as CEO and chairman at Sony, which is still quite a high ranked position within the company. At the moment this can be taken as a likely rumor as Sony has not announced the change of power within the company itself. Still… Nikkei is one of the most respected Japanese news reporters so it is doubtful this is a false report.

Scarygirl arrives on XBLA and PSN this month courtesy of Square Enix

Some of you may have heard the name Scarygirl before, and that is because not only is it a hit graphic novel written by Nathan Jurevicius but it also has a fully animated film being released sometime in the future. For those of you who may know what Scarygirl is then you will certainly be pleased to hear that Square Enix is planning on bringing an action platformer adaptation to the PSN and XBLA in the future.

Scarygirl will land on the PlayStation 3 January 24 and will arrive a week earlier than that on the Xbox 360 on January 18th. You can catch a brief glimpse of what Scarygirl has to offer in the announcement trailer below. Scarygirl herself dresses up like a pirate and has a tentacle for an arm so she certainly isn’t a normal girl herself… but the land she must travel through is something nightmares are made of.

Top 10 tips for starting Star Wars: The Old Republic

Starting up a new game can sometimes be difficult, especially if the genre in one in which players may not have a high degree of familiarity with. I myself will admit to not being the world’s greatest MMORPG aficionado, any many aspects of the game I’m still learning the ropes of, even with a few weeks worth of game time behind me in Star Wars: The Old Republic. In what is being hailed as one of the best MMO’s ever conceived, here are my Top 10 tips for players wanting to jump into life in a galaxy far far away.

TOP 10 TIPS FOR STARTING STAR WARS: THE OLD REPUBLIC

1 ) Share your buffs and abilities with others.

When starting up Star Wars: The Old Republic, every character will have a stat improving ability, such as the Sith Warrior’s ‘Unnatural Might’. These buffs are targeted abilities and will work on not only the player but also other players nearby. Sharing these buffs with others often results in said others sharing with you in kind. These passive stat boosts last for an hour, so you should get some good use out of them. They also stack, which means anyone able to stack up 4 different buffs is at a real advantage in combat.

2 ) Pay close attention to your health and that of your enemies.

Your health will rapidly disappear in certain combat situations. Some stock enemies may be underestimated in groups. Keep a close tab on not only your health, but also the health of your party. Especially if you’re the team’s healer. Comparing the rate at which your health falls against that of your opponents will eventually become second nature, but for those starting out, don’t underestimate the value of self healing before entering your next skirmish.

3 ) Don’t feel restricted in light or dark side actions.

Ah, the moral choice system. A keystone of Bioware games. You wouldn’t think there’d be much of a need for this if you ended up selecting a particular Republic or Empire class. That said, players shouldn’t feel restricted in choosing particular light and dark side responses in conversations and action instances simply on the basis of their allegiance. Sith Inquisitors can be holy champions of light, while a Jedi Knight could be a total pile of bantha poodoo. The dark side oriented classes can make good decisions, and light side oriented ones can make evil ones. These decisions will uniquely change the flow of your personal game and grant players access to some very unique light or dark side oriented items.

4 ) Start up with a friend.

This is a no-brainer really. Starting up a new MMORPG with a friend to help you learn the ropes can be a huge asset. They can teach you tricks and give you tips that others may not be able to. They might also be willing to buy or craft you some nice starting gear for your character. And it will save the amount of time you’ll spend under the L4G banner. There will be missions that players will come across that require a party to complete. Having a friend to go through them with will help keep you alive.

5 ) Dying in-game is not a big deal.

Unlike other MMORPG’s, the game does not punish player’s too severely for dying in the heat of battle. There is no monetary or experience penalty that comes along with death, just slightly damaged equipment. If this occurs, head to a store ASAP and have your gear repaired while the damage is still light. So if you slightly underestimate an opponent or accidently walk off a cliff, the respawn is not big deal.

6 ) Make sure the advanced class you choose at level 10 is the one you want.

At level 10, players will have the option to choose one of two advanced classes for their character. Consult with friends who play the game to help work out exactly which role you want to take. Player’s soloing the game should still take a moment of consideration to look at the pros and cons of each advanced class. For example, becoming the heavy defence class may grant you the perk of heavy armour, but it will restrict your damage dealing ability to one hand weapons. Make sure the class you pick is the right one to fit your play style, because you cant take it back!

7 ) Use the Galactic Market Auction House.

Once players are able to hit their first capital city planet, they should take a look at the Galactic Trading Vendors to find some really rare and powerful gear. Now bear in mind lots of people will post up unfair deals and prices, but others will be quite reasonable with their pricing. This is a tip for players wanting to sell any unique gear they find too. For example, if you find a rare belt that you want to sell, but the in-game vendors only offer you 200 credits, but costs 1000 credits to buy. Players should sell the belt for perhaps 500 or 600 credits. You’ll make a better profit, and the purchaser will make a big saving. Transactions should be win-win for both buyer and seller. So don’t get greedy.

8 ) Don’t be afraid to enter a Warzone.

Even if you are a simple level 10 Smuggler, there’s nothing to say that you can’t hold your ground against a level 50 Sith Warrior in a PvP warzone. In Warzone matches, health and abilities are more or less scaled to even out the playing field for the entrants’, regardless of level or experience. That said, because they have a greater range of abilities and stronger versions of basic abilities, players at higher levels will be at an advantage. Still, don’t be dissuaded from joining a warzone simply because of the PvP aspect. It’s a great way to earn some fast cash and experience. Just hope your team is a capable one.

9 ) Crew crafting abilities can always be changed.

After reaching a central hub area, players will have the opportunity to teach their crew members material gathering and crafting skills. These skills will become very useful to the player in being able to craft their own items such as weapons, armour, modifications, health packs and other varieties of useful items. That said, players should feel free to swap and change their crew’s crafting abilities if the need for another craft arises. Unlike selecting the player’s advanced class, these crew abilities are not set in stone.

10 ) Logout in a Rest Area

Do you like receiving DOULBE experience points? Yeah, that’s what I thought. By logging out in a rest zone, such as a cantina or the player’s home ship, players will earn their character a ‘rested’ state. This basically means that for a certain threshold of Experience points, players will receive DOUBLE experience points in combat. A nice little bonus for choosing your logout area wisely.
