Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D crawls onto shelves February 21

While many people have played Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater back when it was on the PLayStation 2, none of them had the chance to play it in 3D. Thankfully they will now soon have that chance as the long announced Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D will finally be making its way to store shelves on February 21st in North America and March 8th in Europe, Japan and Australia, which is quite interesting as most Metal Gear titles are released in Japan before the West, not the other way around.

A number of new features have been added to Snake Eater 3D such as a photocamouflage system that allows the player to change the color of Snake’s clothes to a picture you take with your camera. Also it will make use of the gyro control system on the 3DS, the 3D feature and will make use of the Circle Pad Pro attachment to make controlling the camera easier.

In keeping with the structure of the novels the story will alternate between character viewpoints, with each character at the head of their chapter until the two meet at the corner of a common quest.

Was 2011 the Biggest Year for Xbox?

Direct from the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Mircosoft reports that last year was the biggest year for the Xbox ever.  Yes that’s right 2011 was the biggest year in the history of the xbox, from the original Xbox to the current Xbox 360.

Xbox 360 was the top selling gaming console in North America in 2011, with Kincet selling 18 million sensors around the world. These high figures may be attributed to the high demand and Christmas splurge for Xbox 360 bundles with Kinect. In North America alone, around 800,000 Xbox 360 consoles were sold on Black Friday, the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Overall 66 million consoles have been sold worldwide since Xbox 360 launch in 2005.

The record year for Microsoft may also be credited to the shifting emphasis of Xbox 360. It is no longer just a gaming console with Microsoft embracing a more family friendly experience, along with Xbox LIVE expanding to broadcasting live and on-demand TV.  The new Xbox 360 dashboard reflects this, but it’s not all without controversy. The new dashboard received quite a lot of backlash from gamers for hiding away and making many features redundant all together.

But nevertheless Xbox 360’s sales figures speak for themselves and the technology of Kinect is being used in ways that had not even before thought of, say for example Skyrim with motion and voice controls? Thousands of mods for the device are widely available online, and Microsoft does not have a problem with that. In fact, Microsoft released a Software Development Kit for Kinect exactly for that reason, to encouraging people to experiment with what Kincet can do. Microsoft has announced at CES that they will be releasing Kinect for Windows, launching February 1st later this year for $249.

With a rumoured Xbox 360 successor on the horizon who knows what 2012 will be like for Xbox 360. But if 2011 is anything to go by, it certainly isn’t over Microsoft and Xbox. But then again, it is the future and anything could happen.

A Very Special Anime Episode #1 – Cowboy Bebop: ‘Speak Like A Child’

‘A very special episode’, is an episode of television that not only defines the highest point of a series, but also stands as a hallmark for spectacular television. An episode deemed ‘very special’ is one that is built from something different than your average half hour yarn, something deeper – that intangible something that we know as soul.

For my first ‘A very special anime episode’ I thought the best place to start would be a series that has multiple ‘special’ episodes; Cowboy Bebop. But instead of focusing in on such great episodes as ‘Pierott le Fou’, ‘Sympathy for the Devil’, ‘The Real Folk Blues Part 1 and 2’, I will be focusing on an episode that resonated personally with me for years after watching and to this day stands as one of the greatest episodes of anime I have ever been lucky enough to view; ‘Speak Like A Child’

Now it should go without saying that this article is going to be heavy on spoilers, so if you are one of the unlucky few yet to watch Cowboy Bebop, you may want to take into consideration you may spoil a major character plot if you continue on. So without further adieu, I give you my first ‘A very special anime episode’.

Now part of what make’s ‘Speak Like A Child’ so good is the fact that it embodies it’s very own concept. The idea of a time capsule, storing moments of the past for the future to view. That right there is both a summary of what this episode has become and it’s central plot element.

‘Speak Like A Child’ is an episode that focuses on Faye Valentine, a character who’d previously in the series (in ‘My Funny Valentine’) resigned to the fact that she had no past. ‘Speak Like A Child’ turns that notion on it’s head, in what is easily one of anime’s best back story episodes. Not only for the way it reveals said back story but also for the way it reaches viewers on such an emotional level. But before I continue with that lets discuss why this episode itself is a time capsule.

It’s no surprise that nearly 15 years on since Cowboy Bebop first premiered, that the series doesn’t exactly look new. While it still looks as stylish as ever, it’s age is evident, even more so when you consider that the time capsule within the episode is actually a beta cassette. That’s right a beta cassette. Now at the time ‘Speak Like A Child’ aired, DVD’s were slowly coming into mainstream use and tapes were becoming a thing of the past. In Bebop, the beta cassette is a relic of the past – in this episodes case, Faye’s past.

Cowboy Bebop’s main overarching theme is the concept of people’s pasts. We all have a past and each of us deal with things in different ways. While Faye had long thought she did not have a past and had accepted that fact, Spike stands opposite of her as a man who can’t ever seem to escape his past. Which is a lot of the reason why he is so intent on uncovering the contents of the mysterious tape that appears for Faye (she doesn’t care about it’s contents). Spike can’t escape his past, but ultimately it is better to have a past than to not.

Once the episode reaches the climax, with the Bebop crew managing to get their hands on the tech to play the mystery tape, we discover what is both simultaneously heart-breaking and beautiful. A private moment between Faye and her past self, ,except it’s a moment she chooses to share with her friends. The discovery that she has a past. Here on this ancient cassette tape lies honest to god proof that she had existed.

While the Faye in the video may be a version of herself that is more stranger than self, her message is one of Bebop’s most tear-jerking moments, by far. “Is this… me?” modern Faye asks, and as if the words echoed back in time, pre-cryogenic freeze Faye replies “I’m no longer here. But I’m here today, and I’ll always be cheering for you right here. Cheering for you, my only self.” This is an intensely private moment, one that marks a turning point for the entire series and Faye’s character. One that would go on to set up her final scene in the entire series.

For Faye this revelation of her life before waking in the future (or present), is monumental, as no matter where she is in the world at that moment captured on an old beta cassette, proves that she was somebody. It proves that she is was alive. That sentiment is one of the most beautiful points in an all around stunning series.

That ending scene inspires awe each time I watch it, and for the grand scale pay off of Faye Valentine’s character development ‘Speak Like A Child’ becomes ‘A very special episode’ in every possible way. ‘Speak Like A Child’ is simply composed of that intangible something we call ‘soul’. And with that, what else can be said besides; See You, Space Cowboy.

Max Payne 3 Rockstar’s Research For The Next Hit

Over on the Rockstar website, they have posted an awesome news article on their research into the new and upcoming Max Payne title, Max Payne 3. In this article, they explain and showcase their research that is currently going on and inspiring levels and art assets within the game.

The game is set over in São Paulo, Brazil – so of course the research that the team is doing is taking place over there. To quote the dev team –

Escaping the traumatic events of Max Payne 2 and all of the corruption, betrayal, peril and pain of his existence as an NYPD detective, Max Payne breaks south – way south, to São Paulo, Brazil where he takes up a new gig working private security for a wealthy local family in Max Payne 3. As one might imagine, amidst the volatile disparity of towering wealth and profound, desperate poverty in São Paulo, this new job turns out to be not quite as cushy as hoped

In addition to all of the intense technical development and meticulous game design being poured into Max Payne 3 to create an advanced and cutting-edge action-shooter gameplay experienceas always, painstaking effort has also been made by our development teams and internal Rockstar Research department to ensure that the vibe and presentation of São Paulo – touchstones like Paulistano culture, police, weaponry and other elements that will not only contribute to the game’s single-player narrative, but also the single and multiplayer environments and characters – are as authentic as possible.

Over the coming weeks and months, we’ll be offering a glimpse into just some of the behind-the-scenes research and production design done over the course of Max Payne 3’s development, from information and asset-gathering trips down to São Paulo, to local casting for pedestrian types in all the game’s levels, to extensive study of municipal law-enforcement wings, weaponry and much more.

I wish I could go down to São Paulo for “research” every once in a while. Here are some photo’s that the development team have shared pertaining to their research.

Be sure to check out their news article here for all of the information.
