Grand Slam Tennis 2 Review

Grand Slam Tennis 2
Publisher: EA Sports
Developer: EA Canada
Platforms: Xbox 360 (Reviewed), Playstation 3,
Release Date: Out now!  (14th in Europe)
Price: $49.99 (USD) – Available Here

Overview:

With 2011 bringing us some of the best sporting games to date, Grand Slam Tennis 2 has got the ball rolling (no pun intended..) for 2012.  Our expectations for EA Sports continues to grow to new heights as they keep managing to innovate and recreate sporting games year after year.  Naturally, when we heard they had decided to share some love with Tennis games, we got quite excited to see how they would compete with the pretty formidable efforts that the Top Spin and Virtua Tennis series have provided for us.  So does Grand Slam Tennis 2 find it’s place on our top shelf of sporting titles. or will it be collecting dust with the other flops? Keep on reading to find out.

Gameplay:

The big innovation that GST2 offers is it’s Total Racquet Control System, enabling players to play the game using nothing but the two analogue sticks of the remote.  The system seems quite simple, just flicking the stick in a certain direction to play the shot you want, however it does take quite a bit of getting used to.  You can alternatively choose to use a classic scheme of just buttons, and at first it will be very tempting to do so given the practice required for the Total controls, however if you can resist the urge and keep at it, you’ll find it quite rewarding as it makes gameplay very smooth.  That being said however there are a few kinks in the controlling which causes the player to hit a shot that you ddn’t intend on doing, such as a slice instead of a top spin shot, and for net play the system sort of falls apart, so switching between buttons and sticks will probably be necessary.

The match engine runs very smoothly, as you’d expect from an EA Sports’ title,  with the roster players actually reflecting their real life counterparts in shot actions as well as tendencies, including the good ol’ jock pulling by Nadal (as seen in the picture below). What doesn’t work so well is the AI.  This is ever-present in Career Mode more so than other modes in the game and I’ll explain why shortly.  The game modes for Grand Slam Tennis are pretty standard, giving players the option to do exhibition matches, a career mode with your created player, online, as well as Grand Slams Classics, which features classic match ups from the last three decades as well as some fantasy match ups.

Career Mode, like both of its competitors, makes you create a player (male or female) in which you’ll build up from an amateur to the world number one.  The creation options are pretty standard, nothing too flashy but adequate nonetheless, you can also import a picture of your choice  as a Game Face through the EA Sports website.  A small omission from the creation options is the ability to give your player the option to use a two-handed backhand (which Nadal also seems to be missing) which might seem miniscule to some but still detracts from the variety of playing styles.

Moving on from the creation part, Career Mode is pretty standard.  You start out as ranked 100 in the world, yet for some reason you can still enter all the Grand Slams straight away.  Not only that, but there is no adjustable difficulty setting in Career Mode but instead the difficulty increases as your player progresses.  So what you’re left with, is an extremely easy first few years in which your player (who will have a rating somewhere in the 30s as opposed to the pros who are almost all between 70 and 85) can and in most cases will win all the grand slam tournaments you enter.

The biggest problem with this (aside from you easily dominating everyone you play) is that it just makes the Career Mode extremely tedious and pretty unsatisfying.  The AI is simply not good enough given the quality we experience in other games (and especially EA Sports games for that matter).  If you want a rally with the opponent to last more than 3 shots you have to hit the easiest shots possible for your opponent to hit back, and even then you can’t be guaranteed they won’t just swing and miss (or stand and miss).  The AI in other modes (and in the latter stages of Career Mode) is actually OK, still pretty easy to beat most of the time but at least they put up a fight. Another issue, is the tournaments appear to be unseeded, meaning the top players will generally knock each other out in the first few rounds, leaving you to mainly come up against EA’s creations (roster fillers, or racket wielding chumps), until you reach the semis or even the finals.  If you can put up with the repetition and boredom of the first few seasons of Career Mode, it can actually be reasonably enjoyable, but that being said, the repetition doesn’t really go away.

Grand Slam Classics is a pretty sweet additional mode, giving the game a bit more sustainability as you attempt to unlock extra match ups from previous decades and the fantasy match ups.  Online as well is pretty well done, and is probably the biggest selling point for the game due to the lacking in AI ability.

Audio & Visuals:

The presentation of GST2 is really well done, with the majority of roster players sharing a very realistic likeness with their real life counterparts, in addition to the fully licenced courts also adding a lot to the experience of the game. The menu and layout of the game is also very intuitive and logical.

On the other hand, the audio for the game is pretty disappointing overall.  I’m not sure what it is about tennis games but commentary and soundtracks never seem to be high on the importance list.  Whilst obviously game-play is paramount, the extras really could help push the enjoyment of the game up.  The soundtrack is basically non-existent, with a couple of looped tunes playing in the background and nothing more.  Whilst it is nice to have commentary in a tennis game (something which Top Spin has never bothered with), the voices of Pat Cash and John McEnroe become very repetitive within your first few matches.  Moreover, the commentators never really specifically refer to the players on court (namely the real pros), leaving them making very general comments on the match and not really offering too much (besides a fair bit of criticism from Pat Cash with every mistake you make).

Overall:

Despite my criticisms of the Career Mode and the AI, GST2 is arguably still the best tennis game available at the moment, solely due to the smoothness and responsiveness of the match engine.  The roster is acceptable and is always nice to have some legends of the game amongst the current stars, although I still long for the day when a tennis game doesn’t need to include game-generated players. Grand Slam Tennis 2 may lack some creativity and hasn’t really stretched the world of tennis gaming by any means, it still is a solid and polished game, and most importantly offers a very promising platform for future growth.

Sony Confirms LittleBigPlanet Karting

A few days ago, a rumour was circulating that Sackboy will be getting his own kart racing game called LittleBigPlanet Karting. Adding credibility to the rumour was a picture of a banner ad that included screenshots and revealed that the game would be coming to the Playstation 3. It turns out that the banner was not a fake and the mumblings were spot on as Sony confirmed over Twitter that the game is indeed real and is currently in development.

The following is the Sony twitter post:

Update: We can confirm that LittleBigPlanet Karting is in fact in development and we look forward to sharing more on the game soon!

Now, since Sony is notorious for not keeping their secrets, the announcement was not a surprise. However, the following question must be raised: what is the fate of the Modnation series? A Playstation Vita iteration is only a couple of weeks away from release (as a Vita launch title) and the gaming world gets an announcement of a kart racing Sackboy. Will this be the end of Modnation Racers or can both titles co-exist on the same shelf/digital store? Comment below on this revelation and what it could mean for the Modnation Racer franchise.

Toyama Reveals Gravity Rush DLC, Wants Sequel

Keiichiro Toyama is suffering from a mild case of anxiety as one of his games, Gravity Rush/Daze has been released in Japan for the Playstation Vita. Because of that, he has trouble sleeping, so he decides to jump on Twitter and post a few things, mainly about Gravity Rush. In a few Twitter posts, he has revealed that the game will get downloadable content. No details have been revealed (which includes pricing and release) but he wants to make sure that the content is not at an unaffordable price.

Toyama has also revealed that he would love to continue making games based on the world of Gravity Rush. This was an answer to a question posted on Twitter on whether a sequel or a new game is on the cards. He also revealed that he would love to retain the staff that helped create Toyama’s vision. Should this be a hit worldwide, Sony will have no problem funding the project, with Toyama at the helm and the same staff hanging around.

Gravity Rush is now available in Japan under the title Gravity Daze. For those in Western territories, expect the game on launch day. However, if you live in Europe and the PAL territories, then save some space on your memory stick as the game will be released through the PSN only.

Mass Effect 3 Reinstate – Female Shepard Trailer

Mass Effect 3 will continue Commander Shepard’s war against the Reapers, who will target Earth and its human inhabitants. In a sense, the story of the trilogy feels like it must have a male lead. Indeed, the default gender of Shepard is male. With that said, players will get to choose to make Shepard as a female commander, in the latest trailer of Mass Effect 3. The feature has been present in the first two games and it is a different experience. In the trailer below, the female Shepard does what Shepard does best: pulling herself out of dangerous situations and fighting her way through hordes of aliens.

Will you answer the call to help Earth and don the female persona in the upcoming war with the Reapers? If you want to heed the call, then prepare to pick up Mass Effect 3 on March 6, 2012 (March 8 for Australia). Pre-order now for a bonus weapon: the M55 Argus.

Star Trek Video Game Rescheduled For 2013

Remembered that Star Trek video game announced back at E3 2011? Well New information about the game has just been released. The Star Trek video game is now scheduled for a Q1 2013 release, to coincide with the highly anticipated sequel to J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek. The video game tie-in is currently being developed by Digital Extremes and will be co-published and distributed by Paramount Pictures and Namco Bandai for all major consoles and PC.

The game is to feature co-op gameplay with players controlling both lead characters Captain Kirk and Spock with the games story penned by BAFTA award winner and God of War writer Marianne Krawczyk in collaboration with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, writers and producers for the upcoming Star Trek film.

Hopefully this Star Trek game won’t suffer the curse of movie video game tie-ins.

Lollipop Chainsaw Valentine’s Day Trailer

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, why not celebrate the occasion with Lollipop Chainsaw’s brand new trailer, which shows off the undying love between killer zombie-hunter Juliet Starling and her decapitated boyfriend Nick.

Yes you read right, Juliet has a head for a boyfriend…who she keeps around her hip, yeah just watch the trailer it will all make sense. Reminder: It is a Suda 51 game after all. But also shown off in the new trailer is a bunch of new gameplay footage.

Lolipop Chainsaw is set to be released for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 sometime in 2012.

Stop Those Fish Review

Stop Those Fish
Developer: Eye Interactive
Publisher: Eye Interactive
Platforms: iPod Touch, iPhone (reviewed), iPad
Release Date: January 19
Price: Free (HERE)

Overview

Stop Those Fish takes the simple concept of simple, yet well-polished, finger-swiping mechanic and puts you in the shoes of three seafaring bears who must stop an invasion of wave after wave of diabolical fish. Does the application provide enough depth to support the basic gameplay, or is this a ship bound for the grizzly (pun intended) deeps of the ocean?

Gameplay

So how do three cartoon bears on a two-dimensional plane stop the maniacal and imperialistic fish horde, you ask? Why, with humanity’s most effective fish-killing weapon: dynamite. The mechanics that drive Stop Those Fish are quite simple. Each bear’s boat has a limited stock of ammunition. As fish rise from the bottom of the screen to the top in an effort to destroy the three heroic grizzlies, players drag their finger from one of the boats to the area below them. These targeting lines can be curved, zig-zags, whatever. If you can draw it in one finger swipe, it’s fair game.
Once the line is drawn, the designated bear throws dynamite along it, and if there are any fish in the way… Boom. Killing multiple fish with one stick of dynamite is rewarded with extra in-game cash and conserves ammunition; ammunition which becomes a priceless commodity as the game progresses. As you go through the game’s over 50 levels, fish become progressively more erratic in their movement, making them much harder to hit, and this increased challenge is welcome as you’ll find yourself breezing through the earlier levels of the game. Between levels, you’ll be able to spend some in-game coin to upgrade the bears’ boats, buy more ammunition, or repair damage the boats have previously sustained.

The issues begin there. You see, even if you’re spectacular at racking up combo-kills during the course of the game, there’s very little chance that you’ll gather enough coin to support an extended campaign against the marauding sea creatures. You’ll find yourself running out of ammo, being unable to afford ship repairs, and just generally marooned with no help in a sea of angry fish people.

That is, unless you elect to spend some real world moolah to increase your in-game money pile. Stop Those Fish is almost arcade-esque in the way it provides an insurmountable challenge which essentially requires that players lay down some real-world cash to progress. Ironically, because the game has little to offer in the way of replayability, this push for real money transactions seems like even more of a cash-grab. There’s no three-star system like many iOS game have implemented, and there are no collectibles. Once you’ve beaten the game, that’s pretty much it.

The unlockable Dark Mode and Cage Mode provide fun diversions to this problem, but they do not solve it, as they too can be finished with little to show for it.

In the end, though Stop Those Fish‘s gameplay is finely tuned and simple, the game does not quite provide enough depth to encourage players to come back again, even if they have spent money in game.

Audio & Visual

Graphically the game has a lot of character. Let’s face it, even with the oversaturation of two-dimensional cartoon games on mobile platforms, it’s not every day one of those involves bears travelling the oceans of the globe and blowing up anything with gills. While the style may not be all too unique, the art design and concept behind the game keep this latest batch of cartoon animals from becoming one of the lifeless cartoon clones seen elsewhere on the platform.

The music for the game is catchy, but, as there’s just the one track, it begins to get repetitive if you’re on a long run of play. The sound effects are decent, but I’d always imagined dynamite would pack a bit more of a punch when it went off.

Overall

Stop Those Fish is a game whose positives are excellent, but whose negatives are big enough of a hindrance to stop the app from achieving greatness. Though the controls of the game are fine-tuned to perfection, the shallowness of everything on offer is felt almost instantaneously, and the reliance placed on real money transactions by the developers feels like a kick in the face for anyone who downloaded the game hoping it would truly be free.

That aside, the worst the game can do is take up your time, and even if you only spend twenty minutes with it and never play it again, those are twenty minutes you’ll probably enjoy.

Fans mourn death of Whitney Houston

There was tragic news for music lovers today with the death of 48 year-old singer Whitney Houston. Fans gathered enmasse outside the Beverly Hills hotel where she died, they brought with them flowers, music and love for the glamourous pop music icon.

The singer had been in Los Angeles this week to attend a pre-Grammy party hosted by a notable music executive. Houston wasn’t simply a singer either; in 1992 she starred in the film ‘The Bodyguard’ and from this film her cover of Dolly Parton’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ took off. Undeniably one of the most renowned music icons, Houston sold over 170 million records wordwide and was in the middle of staging a comeback following  struggles with drug addiction.

Her gospel-trained voice was something one would usually expect to hear pouring out soul, like her mother, singer Cissy Houston. But Houston went down the road less travelled and took the world of pop music by storm.

Whitney Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 pm on Saturday 11th February, of unknown causes. Her death is being investigated by Beverly Hills police detectives.
