Harvest Moon: A New Beginning E3 2012 Preview

The Harvest Moon franchise is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year and with this milestone comes the company’s first Harvest Moon title developed solely for the Nintendo 3DS, Harvest Moon: A New Beginning. At Natsume’s booth during E3 this year we were given a full run down of this brand new title, including a number of its new features, as well as a small bit of hands-on time with the title.

Now the Harvest Moon series has never offered any type of customization besides in recent years where players are able to select the gender of their character. However A New Beginning contains the first time that the element of customization has been added into the game, and from what Natsume’s representative was saying, it has been added in a big way.

The biggest feature to Harvest Moon: A New Beginning is the fact that players will quite literally be able to customize everything, from the appearance of their characters, the layout of their farm, appearances of their buildings to even moving around the buildings in the main town! While this could potentially cause some confusion, the lower screen displays the layout of the town with each building displaying the occupants’ face. This creates a very interesting system where players can move the buildings in the town to fit their playstyle.

For example, if the player is choosing to go after a certain bachelor or bachelorette then they can simply move their house closer to their farm. Or perhaps you are eager to create a livestock raising farm, then you can move the livestock store close as well. Interestingly enough, two new animals have been added to the livestock list, with a Yak and a Llama entering the barnyard.

Another new feature which is making its first appearance in the Harvest Moon series is customization. Anyone who has played Harvest Moon before has likely spent countless hours foraging for various items. However the only thing players could do with these items was to either use them for cooking or simply sell them in their shipping bin. Now these items will be able to be used for the brand new crafting mechanic which can allow the player to build better houses, upgrade their fields and create a number of unique creations, including a robotic panda!

As standard with the Harvest Moon series, players will have four bachelors or four bachelorettes to choose from. There will also be two hidden romantic options, one for each gender, though who these may be was not revealed yet. Along with all of the other improvements to the game, the relationship system has been overhauled as well. In past games there were plenty of times that romantic interests could instantly fall in love with the main character.

Now however, there will be a gradual increase in the characters’ friendship towards the player, with romance eventually springing from this friendship. Interestingly enough, if the player ends up choosing a boyfriend or a girlfriend and starts flirting with other suitors, then their current partner can even become jealous. For those concerned about a possible break in marriage tradition, don’t worry. Natsume’s representative assured me that the blue feather would still be used for marriage proposal, though considering the new jealousy factor, gamers may wish to make sure who they want to chase after this time around, especially since the new romance options will have some interesting personality types.

Sorcery Review

Sorcery
Developer: The Workshop, SCE Santa Monica Studio
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment America
Platform: Playstation 3 (Move Required)
Release Date: 24/05/2012
Price: $39.96 (Available Here)

Overview

Sorcery brings magic to the Playstation Move. Players will be stepping into the shoes of Finn, a sorcerer’s apprentice equipped with a stolen magic wand. He will have access to an array of spells, cast by motions with the Playstation Move. In addition to magic, Finn will be solving puzzles with spells and magical items, find ingredients and use them to create potions that give permanent effects. Gamers who pick up this game will not be disappointed. The story, while clearly aimed at children, is excellent, with likeable characters that one would care about. The gameplay is fun, exciting and interesting, with accurate Move controls, a variety of spells and potion-making. The visuals are bright and the audio fits within the game world. However, the game is weighed down by a short story, repetition of enemies and repetitive level design.

Story

Players take control of Finn, a sorcerer’s apprentice. His master, Dash, leaves the tower to do a task. With a wand confiscated, Finn steals one in Dash’s office, as well as consume a potion that makes him more powerful. After practicing a bit, he sets off a potion that contains an ingredient that Erline, his feline companion, reveals that it is the last of. The two head to Lochbarrow to find some more of this ingredient, only for Finn’s curiosity to get the better of him. Heading deeper, he stumbles upon an orb. After picking it up, he accidentally activates it, unleashing the Nightmare Queen upon the world. Finn must find a way to defeat the Nightmare Queen and restore the world to its normal state.

The story is quite entertaining. It is easy for children to follow the events, but adults will also enjoy the events as well. The interaction between Finn and Erline is the highlight. It provides some of the comedy of the story with friendly banter between the two. However, they also show a deeper friendship throughout the game. Finn is the typical hero who grows from an apprentice to a proper sorcerer. Considering Finn is a likable character, it gives the player satisfaction at the end of the game. The player is also cheering for Finn to succeed. The only problem with the story is that it is quite short. It can be complete in a five to six hour sitting. While the length of the story really has no bearing on the quality, Sorcery could have used an extra few hours.

Gameplay

Magic is at the core of Sorcery. That means the player’s only weapon is their Playstation Move. Finn’s first spell is the basic but useful Arcane Bolt. The spell is easy to use. It only requires a flick of the wrist forward in any direction the player desires. Throughout the story, players will have access to more powerful spells, usually involving different elements. The designers opted to allow certain spells to be combined to create more devastating magic. For example, players could cast tornado and combine it with the fire spell to create a fire storm. This increases the player’s arsenal of attacks, adding a new level of strategy. Each spell is activated by holding the Move button and using a different gesture. Other spells such as repair and moving obstacles are also used.

The amount of spells in the game will not be enough if the controls are poor. Fortunately, that is not the case. In fact, Sorcery has the best motion controls of any Move game period. A bold claim, but not one made light-heartedly. While Arcane Bolt only needs a flick of the wrist, what direction the player points the Move at it will go that direction. Shoot it up and the bolt will ascend. The trajectory of the spells can also be curved so that they can hit enemies that hide behind cover. Curving will require practice but is rewarding once mastered. Spells are accurate and responsive to the motions carried out by the player. What makes the controls satisfying is that, when the player makes a mistake, it feels like the player makes the mistake, not poor controls.

Michael Bay’s Ninja Turtles To Start Filming This Year

Shell-shocking!

According to The Province, The Michael Bay-produced Ninja Turtles adaptation is set to begin this year, with Paramount Pictures looking at principal photography this summer or early fall in Vancouver. The turtles will most likely be motion capture CGI, just like the Apes in Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011).

For those not up-to-date, this new adaptation will be quite different to how you may remember the Ninja Turtles, mainly because they’re Ninja Turtles not Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. That’s right! They’re aliens now, but apparently they’ll still act like teenagers. The only plot details listed so far are the following:

“Aliens invade Earth and inadvertently spawn a quartet of mutated reptile warriors, the Ninja Turtles, who rise up against them to defend the world.”

The turtles are expected to come out of their shells and fight crime on December 25, 2013.

Samuel L. Jackson joins RoboCop Cast

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Samuel L. Jackson has joined the cast of Jose Padilha’s upcoming remake of the 1987 RoboCop. Jackson is set to play Pat Novak, a charismatic media mogul with great influence in the RoboCop Universe.

It can be assumed Novak is a new character for this film, perhaps a reference to the 1940’s radio series Pat Novak, for Hire? Who knows! What we do know is that the reboot will once again tell the story of Alex Murphy, a dedicated police officer who is brutally murdered and brought back from the dead as a cyborg to fight crime.

The film won’t be hitting cinemas until 2013 but for now you can catch him in Marvel’s The Avengers which is dominating in theatres right now, and in Django Unchained which is set for a Christmas release.

RoboCop is expected to be seen taking out scum in theaters on August 9, 2013.
