Xbox Live News with Pipper – June 13, 2012

Xbox Live News with Pipper is piping hot once again with plenty of delectable deals and games coming your way. This time I have chosen a more comfortable garb with a monkey and socks WITH sandals. I know I am going to hell in the fashion world for that now, but I am completely over it. Furthermore, let’s dive head first into a pool of bananas… I mean video games deals!

Deals Of The Week

Sonic, Sonic, and some more Sonic games encapsulate the line-up this week. Growing up with Sonic the Hedgehog taught me how to be fast – real fast with my fingers. Beyond the button mashing, developing a hatred for Dr. Eggman is fun too! You would have to be crazy not to love this little hedgehog.

Epic Mickey 2 – E3 2012 Hands On Preview

Few things get children and adults more excited than Mickey Mouse and videogames.  Epic Mickey combined both those ideas a few years ago, and now they are back again in Epic Mickey 2.

Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two takes place exactly where the first game left. Mickey has returned home, but without his magic paintbrush. However, it is revealed that the Wasteland is once again in peril, and it is up to to him to fix it.  Luckily this time around he has Oswald to help him, as these two characters are now friends instead of rivals.  Mickey is able to find the paintbrush and together with Oswald, they will travel through 80 years of forgotten Disney characters and memorabilia to restore Wasteland.

With Oswald present, there is naturally a co-op element in play.  For example, to reach high ledges, Oswlad can use his long ears as a helicopter, or he can throw you. Oswald can also command electricity through a remote control.  There are a variety of co-op elements, especially during battle. Best of all, Epic Mickey 2 has drop in/drop out coop, meaning that you will never have to quit during the game and use a menu to add new players.

Of course, the main focus of the Epic Micky series is using your paintbrush and thinner to get from place to place, solve puzzles and battle enemies.  This is a very interesting mechanic.  One the one hand, you can use the brush to “paint in” some things, like a hidden rock, to get over a gap. Or you can use the thinner to reveal hidden areas, like a secret room in Mickey’s house.  In most cases, the game offers you the choice to decide whether you’d like to use the paint or thinner, but either one will usually get you to where you need to go.  However, in some cases, you have to choose whether to “thin out” the world, or “rebuild” it and there is only one option, with different results depending on your choice.

In addition, the 2D platforming elements return, forming a bridge between each level of gameplay. Plus, the game is fully voiced and the music will affect the gameplay quite a bit, as Warren Spector states: “We wanted to take the opportunity to have some songs to further the plot, tell the story, and talk about what people are feeling and stuff. There are going to be several moments where people break into song.”

Graphically, this game is really colorful and bright. I loved the enemy variety, and just the general art direction of the game. In the demo I played, I fought a gigantic dragon that was really neat looking and had a ton of detail. Animations are smooth and fluid; they really add to the experience of the game.

Gameplay-wise, I found the game to be quite fun, although there were some elements lacking.  For example, the aiming reticule seemed to always be wandering around and I had a tough time seeing where I was shooting.  In addition, some of the platforming felt wonky and loose.  For example, when jumping around, I often thought I would hit a ledge just right, only to find myself falling instead.  That said, these controls are much better than the ones from the previous game, and although they still feel a tad unresponsive, I think the rest of the gameplay will more than make up for this small quibble.

I died quite a lot during my playthrough, which I blame on the reticule problem mentioned above. However, I am excited to play through the game when it launches, and I bet there is an option setting that will allow me to adjust how fast the paintbrush moves.  I enjoyed watching the world come to life through my paintbrush, and battling lots of awesome enemies is always fun, especially when you get to use a paintbrush to do so.   Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two launches on November 18 for the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii.

Diablo 3: Real-Money Auction House Launch

Diablo 3 players have been anxiously waiting for the addition of the real-money auction house since the game’s launch. Today marks the official launch for the real currency market that utilizes third party companies as well as Battle.net accounts for the Americas (U.S. dollar, Australian dollar, Mexican peso). While other parts of the world might be angered by not receiving the same update, Blizzard points out that this is one aspect of the game that needs to be smooth.

In order to access the real-money auction house, players must first click on the “Auction House” button on the left portion of their screen. The market has now been divided into two separate portions – gold and regional currency. On the upper right hand of the auction house page, you will see your region’s currency. By pressing the icon, you will switch from gold transactions to currency transactions.

Guidelines

Here are a couple key facts to follow by when using the Real-Money Auction House:

1. Players can only perform purchase items within their region. If your home region is in the Americas, an European character cannot buy, sell, or use items from that region. Use common sense and stick to your own region for money transactions.

2. Obtaining security is a must for all currency transactions. Players can use their Battle.net balance to purchase items, but they must have a Battle.net Authenticator or Battle.net Mobile Authenticator application for their accounts. People who choose to use PayPal instead will have to sign up with the Battle.net SMS Protect service.

3. Obtain security anyway. Even without using the real currency auction house, hacked accounts have been reported. Get a mobile authenticator just in case. Filthy hackers…

Additionally, note that all transactions may not be instant. When purchasing an item, players may encounter a wait to collect the purchased item. In this event the collection area will have “Processing” rather than being completed. I think Blizzard is hoping for a mass majority of people with good credit – wishful thinking.

Give us a shout about your concerns and wishes for the Blizzard Real-Money Auction House. How much money would you spend on a piece of armor?

Juliet cheers for the release of Lollipop Chainsaw in this launch trailer

With Lollipop Chainsaw hitting stores today, Juliet would normally be quite happy considering everyone will be able to celebrate her birthday with her. Too bad her entire school has been infested with zombies! Warner Brothers Entertainment has released the below launch trailer for Suda 51 and Grasshoopper Manufacture’s Lollipop Chainsaw.

In the trailer we can see some sultry scenes of Juliet as well as listen to her badmouth some zombies as she slices them apart with cheerleader flair. Check out the trailer below and be sure to pick up Lollipop Chainsaw in stores so we, as gamers, can continue to show our support for off the wall game ideas such as this.

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection infiltrates the Vita today

Well, I suppose it wasn’t a very stealthy mission considering we’re reporting on it and Konami announced it themselves, but the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection has been released onto the PlayStation Vita today both in stores and through the PlayStation Network. The Vita version of the title will retain the same remastered graphics as well as a number of features optimized for the PlayStation Vita’s unique capabilities.

Now it is worth noting that this HD Collection only contains the Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater titles, unlike the full console version which also contained Metal Gear Solid: Peacewalker. Either way, you can expect our review of the title to appear within the next few days because we just happened to catch these two sneaking onto the Vita a few days ago and have already begun our interrogation.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City developers hit with layoffs

It seems that even if your publisher believes that your game sold well enough to meet expectations, that won’t mean you will be able to keep your job. Today the head of Slant Six, developers of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, revealed to GameSpot that they have had to let go over a quarter of their workforce after the game was released.

The employees who were laid off were given two choices, either take their severance package and leave, or to take employment insurance for 13 weeks while the developer tries to “look for more projects.” Apparently most of the employees chose the second option. It seems that despite the fact that these people are laid off, the company stressed that “these are temporary layoffs, which means we are working very hard on new business prospects so we can reinstate every single person affected.” So from this statement, it seems that people were let go simply because there was nothing else for them to work on, so perhaps these unfortunate unemployed will soon be re-hired.

Senran Kagura BURST: Crimson Girls trailer shows off plenty of costumes

Today Marvelous has revealed a new trailer for Senran Kagura BURST: Crimson Girls which will be released on the Nintendo 3DS on August 30th in Japan. As many of you probably already know, Senran Kagura BURST will feature five newly playable characters as well as the first game of the series included on the cartridge.

The trailer, first found by Andriasang, which can be seen below shows off a decent amount of gameplay footage including some outlandish attacks and costumes that the girls can be changed into during the course of the game. Now despite the apparent popularity of the title in Japan (it is even receiving an anime), there still is no sign of potential localization of the game for Western audiences.

Pikmin 3 will not feature online multiplayer

Anyone who was hoping to try out Pikmin 3’s new multiplayer with those who don’t happen to be sitting next to them on the couch will have to live with some disappointment because Shigeru Miyamoto revealed in an interview with IGN that, despite the Wii U’s more powerful online capabilities, Pikmin 3 will only feature local multiplayer.

In his interview he stated:

“You have to be very careful that you don’t drop frames as you’re trying to sync up with other players over what could be a very great physical distance, over the Internet. But in the situation of Pikmin, for example, since you would have lots of individual, small creatures, the Pikmin, whose every movement and location is going to be really important in the game, it would be very difficult to sync up over an internet connection.

So I think what we’ve decided to do is focus on the single player and local multiplayer aspects, which are really fun. But unfortunately, no online multiplayer for Pikmin 3. But the co-op local multiplayer is really fun.”

You can take his answer as you will, but Pikmin 3 still looks like it may be one of the best titles to pick up alongside the Wii U outside of P-100 or ZombieU of course.
