Overview

How many of us have wanted a maid? Not just any maid, but a maid that is a cute girl, roughly the same age as ourselves and is incredibly awesome at everything? I’m pretty sure that almost everyone will have answered these questions in such a way so as to indicate themselves as wanting this to happen to them. Mahoromatic is an Anime series that focuses around the life a boy named Suguru who has just that, a maid that is incredibly cute and incredibly awesome.

However, as you learn rather quickly, Mahoro (the maid) is not quite the maid that he was expecting. Read on to find out why this is.

Story

Mahoromatic is easily one of the most hilarious Anime of all time. Everything from the plot to the characters, from the start to the finish, is a hilarious take on many of the existing tropes and cliches of Anime shows from that period.

The story follows the life of a young boy named Suguru and his newly acquired maid Mahoro. The twist of the show is that Mahoro is no ordinary maid, she is, in fact, a combat android from a secret organisation called V.E.S.P.E.R which seems like a more light-hearted version of NERV (from Evangelion). Anyway, due to reasons beyond her control, Mahoro only has approximately a year left to live and as a result she has chosen to live out her final days amongst the people of the earth that she once protected from the Aliens known as SAINT.

The first half of the series deals with Suguru and Mahoro’s growing relationship and has a number of hilarious moments within it. There are a bunch of episodes that deal with some kind of Anime trope, for example, there is a beach and a horror episode that are staples to most Anime series. I feel that often when dealing with parodies, a lot of shows are pretty hit or miss, especially when it seems like they are parodying something that they have no backing knowledge with. Fortunately, this is not the case with Mahoromatic Season 1. The writers and animators seem to have hit the nail on the head with all of their jokes, making this season one of the most hilarious Anime series ever.

The second series of Mahoromatic retains the parodic nature of the original series but turns the humour up a few notches by playing with the background story of the characters, the shows premise and the world in which they reside. One of the best examples of this is in the episode where the town hosts it’s annual fighting festival. All of the characters become cliched fighting anime tropes, the setting is freaking hilarious and all of the references just stick out so well that you just CAN NOT help bursting out in laughter add the most strangest of times. My favourite references in this episode were the Dragon Ball Z and Fist Of The North Star (Hokuto No Ken) puns. The entire episode had me laughing my sides open, but these two references were especially awesome.

The last thing about the story that I want to talk about is the shows original story as well. What I really liked is that even though the show was largely a parody of Anime in general, it also featured a pretty coherent and entertaining story. I feel that even if one was not able to understand all of the references, they would still enjoy this series based on it’s own story. However, as is with Gainax series, the ending was all ‘what?’. However, it was not as ‘what?’ worthy as, say, Evangelion or Top wo narae – Gunbuster, but it does actually fit the show quite well and I feel that it really showcased the strengths of each of the characters that were showcased in it.

Visuals

Mahoromatic is a show from the early 2000s and as a result, the Animation may not sit all that well with Anime fans growing up these days. However, for it’s era, it is incredibly well done, incredibly fluid and is quite detailed.

What I really loved about the visuals though, was how all of the male characters looked incredibly generic, while all the female characters were all drawn to be appealing to the male (and homosexual) eye. I feel that having these kinds of designs greatly added to the level of parody within the series. For instance, it is popular in harem Anime to have a generic looking male lead and having a plethora of women designed to be attractive to all kinds of personalities and to have this parodied in this show was quite entertaining.

Of course, this is a Gainax show, so this means that there are plenty of mechanical elements within it. I really liked the mechatronic designs in this series as they were quite detailed and unique. This isn’t Gundam-like mech vs. Aliens or other Gundam-like mech designs, it’s much more unique and robust. For instance, there is a robot that is like a crab. And it goes about cutting off the clothes of the various women in the show. Classic.

Audio

Mahoromatic has a fairly decent soundtrack that is quite enjoyable and fits the shows themes quite well. What I particularly like about Anime over western animation is that they tend to not dub every sound effect comedically, which is something that I feel could have happened with this show if it was handled over here. Fortunately for us, as a Japanese animation, the show does not go over the top with the sound effects, even if this show is a parody. Somehow, I just feel that having normal-ish noises makes much more sense.

The background audio is quite pleasant sounding and captures each scene so well. The opening and ending themes also portray the series’ quite well. In particular, the two ending theme songs fit the shows premise so well that I would recommend listening to them at least once each. I never actually grew bored of them so I never skipped through them. Nowadays, it feels like Anime is just a vehicle to sell the opening and closing themes.

Extras

Mahoromatic is host to a few Extra’s in the form of special features and some awesome inner cover-art. What I really liked about Mahoromatic was that the extras were not spread across every disc, but were instead hosted within, if I recall correctly, the first disc of the first season and the final disc of the second season. There is also the commentary, which was on selected discs.

The special features are as follows –

  • Clean Openings
  • Clean Closings
  • Art Galleries (There is a hidden ecchi gallery on the final disc)
  • Japanese Commercial Spots
  • Japanese Promo Trailers
  • Voice Actor Commentary

Overall

Mahoromatic is easily one of the most insanely hilarious Anime series that I have ever seen and I am actually retroactively disappointed in myself for missing this on it’s original release when I was in highschool. Not only is this a series that is a great parody of the Anime series of it’s time, but it is also a great series that has a great story even without the comedy elements. This is something that Anime fans, or Otaku, should definitely look at picking up as soon as they can.

New Of Orcs and Men Trailer and Website

Of Orcs and Men is looking more promising with every new media release. The game is due out on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in September, and is taking a slightly unusual approach to its set up. Orcs are an oft abused enemy in countless games but here the players role is that of the oppressed, the green, the ever angry Orc. There is also a Goblin character up for grabs, who will provide a more rogue style of gameplay than the bulky warrior Orc.

The new trailer released today is very much an atmosphere builder and something of a story introduction, setting up for an unusual fantasy tale. Arkail (the Orc) and Styx (the Goblin) are sent on a suicide mission into the heart of human territory with one objective: kill the  human emperor!

A good handful of settings get a look in, as well as some voice acting that hints at an entertaining enough story. The official website for the title has also just gone live, and if the trailer below peaks your interest, make sure and check it out for some more information.

Zelda, Golf, Tennis and some Pottery Slide into the eShop

Welcome to the first week of Nintendo’s 8-bit Summer! This week Nintendo are tackling the classics and giving us a nice gulp of sports and what-not with a slew of digital releases.

First up comes the legendary and original beast that started it all, The Legend of Zelda. This NES port was original released on the 3DS eShop to ambassadors, but has eluded everyone else who bought the 3DS a bit late. You can grab Zelda and Link’s first ever sword for $4.99. Also seeing a wide release on the same platform and price is NES Open Tournament Golf, which is pretty much the original Mario golf of sorts, unofficially..that is.

Arc System Works love their sports, too. Family Tennis 3D takes an anime-styled cast and throws them in a full tennis romp for $6.99. Also included is of course the 3D visuals you would expect and three mini-games.

Akari by Nikoli is out for $4.99, and as most Nikoli games are, this is a puzzler involving lights and numeric combinations. Topoloco is also $4.99, but is more of an app that teaches younger players topography in a unique and delightful way.

Next up for the DSiWare is 3, 2, 1… WordsUp!..and yes, that is the title. This game lets players build words out of a set amount of letters while under pressure from a timer. It may be a niche game, but $1.99 isn’t too much of a risk for those of you who crave your vocabulary testers.

Wii have been needing some WiiWare as of late, and one of the most..well..different titles has been released on that service for 500 Points. Let’s Create! Pottery is as it sounds, and offers a relaxing pottery class on the console without a Demi Moore in sight. Finally, 2020 Super Baseball has arrived on the Wii’s Virtual Console and adds a futuristic twist to the sport with land mines and armor spilled into the mix. 2020 Super Baseball is priced at 900 points.

On sale this week is Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword, which is now just $4.99 (a two dollar discount), and those anticipating Heroes of Ruin can snag the demo this week to get a first taste.

Phew…well, no one can argue that Ninty didn’t deliver in quantity this week, and you can pick these titles up now across their preferred platforms. What sports/pottery/Zelda/word-game are you planning on picking up this week?

Winx Club Graphic Novel Series Now Available

Forget about My Little Pony. The Winx Club are some ferocious fairies that spend their time fluttering about and have to constantly deal with three witches by the name of The Trix. VIZ Media are ready to take to the Nickelodeon show one step further, giving these fluttery heroes their own graphic novel set of three.

Here are the details on all that will be hitting shelves:

WINX CLUB: Volume 1, Bloom’s Discovery: Meet Bloom, a normal teenager whose life becomes extraordinary when she discovers she’s actually a fairy, and befriends four other fairies to form the Winx Club. In her first days at school, Bloom has to fight the wicked powers of Icy, Stormy and Darcy – the rival club known as the Trix!

WINX CLUB: Volume 2, Secrets of Alfea: Alfea throws a big party for new students — but how will Bloom find her way out of a Trix trap to join the fun?

WINX CLUB: Volume 3, A Job for Bloom: Bloom makes new friends and discovers ancient enemies when she gets a job at a happening restaurant on the lakefront of Magix!

Bloom is quite a card, just discovering she is a fairy and all. It looks like that this series will be solid enough for fans, and you know those nasty yet tricky witches are sure to cause a ruckus for our fairy friends. It’ll also be interesting to see how this party will turn out. If Bloom missed this, she will be shunned for life…and nobody likes a party pooper, especially Alfea.

Volumes 1 and 2 are available now, and you can find out how this nutty job goes when it hits stores on September 4th with Volume 3’s zany release.

Final Fantasy XIII-3 could be on the way

Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2 game director Motomu Toriyama stated in an interview with Famitsu that Square has finished the DLC for Final Fantasy XIII-2, but that we could see the cast again again at some point which is possible considering Final Fantasy XIII-2 has sold over 2.4 million copies. Speculation is that we could see an announcement at the Final Fantasy 25th anniversary event in Shibuya between August 31st and September 2nd about Final Fantasy XIII-3, which will feature an art gallery on the Franchise.

Toriyama had this to say when asked about the possibility.

“The [FFXIII-2] Lightning download content had an ending that left a feeling mystery and hope. The day when the meaning of this will come to light is not too far off.”

What do you think, should there be a Final Fantasy XIII-3?

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2’s release date revised

Namco Bandai has delayed the European release of Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 to October of this year.

Namco Bandai confirmed the new release date of City Interactive’s stealth shooter sequel, although it is not yet clear whether this is because the game needs more time to finish, or if it is just one of these tactical postponements in order to avoid a busy release window. The reputation of quietness of the August release schedule suggests it could be the former, but there were previous delays to game to factor in to your suspicions. It will now launch on October 9th for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, instead of August 21st.

Georges St-Pierre lends his fighting talent to Sleeping Dogs

One of the best looking features of Sleeping Dogs we’ve seen so far is the brutal combat system and it seems that United Front Games, developers of the title, had a little help in making this combat look not only genuine but also viscous. Today it was revealed that Georges St-Pierre lent his fighting talent to create an authentic looking fighting system.

The video can be seen below and it features a long voice over by GSP as he describes how a fighter truly can become strong, while we are shown clips of Wei Shen performing a number of MMA styled moves on his enemies. It seems that everything that has been shown off by Square Enix since their acquisition of the Sleeping Dogs license is of excellent quality, meaning that when the title comes out on August 14th, it looks like it will be quite the treat.
