Firefly studios sci-fi strategy game Space Colony is currently undergoing a HD makeover on the way to it being re-released this November. Originally released in 2003 to favourable acclaim, it allows the player to take control over a group of 20 colonists as they attempt to colonize various planets, and then hold them whilst under alien attack. At the same time you also have to manage your colonist’s well being, with everything from their levels of hunger to their mental state needing to be looked after. Don’t think this is merely the Sims in space though, as you have multiple structures, weapons, aliens and strategy mechanics which you will have to employ in order to achieve victory.
In a similar fashion to Firefly Studios other game Stronghold, the player can choose either a ‘Military path’ or a ‘Civilian path’. With one leading you down a road of lasers and death, while the other results in you building intergalactic golf courses (no joke). Space Colony is also fondly remembered for the colonists themselves, as each colonist has their own personality, needs and abilities. Also who wouldn’t want to control a colonist named Stig Svensson who is a walking Norwegian ex-biker behemoth?
As well as the game receiving new HD textures as part of the remastering, the field of view has also been increased, allowing players to see multiple situations without having to scroll around the map. The aspect ratio is also being upgraded from the previous cap of 1280×1024 to 2560×1600.
The game is set to be released digitally on the 8th of November, and will be available from Amazon, GoG, Get Games, and other major retailers.

Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit Developer: Arkedo Studio Publisher: Sega Platform: Xbox Live Arcade (Reviewed), PlayStation Network, PC Release Date: September 26th, 2012 Price: 1200 MS Points ($14.99) – Available Here
Overview:
Hell seems like a pretty common place to let players go crazy and just lay into enemies, even better about it is that it can be made to look like pretty much anything the makers of a game want it to look like. As big or small as it needs to be to fit the story, gameplay, and tone, Hell Yeah! boosts to have 10 massive areas of Hell to explore and defeat the 100 strongest monsters that happen to standing in the way. While that sounds like a pretty fun time, it comes down to how well it is executed as in the ends that what separates different classes of games. So, does this one have what it takes to be a good one?
Story: Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit is the story of Ash, the current ruler of Hell, as he tries to prove that he isn’t a weak coward after a bit of a photograph snafu. Of course, when the ruler of Hell needs to prove how badass they are, the only real way is to knock around a few of the stronger monsters across ten very different realms of Hell. No need to feel too bad though, as when in Hell, death is apparently nothing more than a change of scenery. For the most part however the story of Hell Yeah! is little more than a excuse for going around the different places, as the quest to recover said photos is simply mentioned a few times throughout the game, usually around bosses. But, with games like this the main focus isn’t exactly the main event and as weak as it is as a story, the developers still seem to have a little fun with it.
Gameplay:
The vast majority of the game is spent with Ash in a tricked out drill-like wheel strapped with plenty of guns as he moves around 10 pretty big maps. Attacking comes in the form of either drilling through enemies or blowing them away, depending mostly on their defenses and how close players are willing to get to them. As the major component of the game, it is pretty fun as Ash jumps around and unloads into pretty much everything. When he first gets the wheel he can grind through some materials blocking some paths, but not all of them, giving the game at least a bit of a Metroidvania element, but not too much. While it would have been nice to see a little bit more of this, with some cooler rewards, as it is mostly part of the natural progression. Natural progression is unfortunately fairly short after figuring out what to do, with only a few puzzle-ish monster bosses that could give a little trouble.
The wheel isn’t his only mode of transportation though as when he starts out, as well as a few other areas where his wheel isn’t allowed, he doesn’t even have that, instead hoofing it on foot completely defenseless. These sections play completely differently, it isn’t possible to go toe-to-toe with even the smallest of enemies, making it more important to out think and out maneuver. This adds a nice diversity to the game, making it important to think about how to go about defeating enemies when Ash can’t just empty all of his guns into them. Despite how any boss is dispatched however, the only way to finish them off is through special little mini-games that require faster skills as the game goes on, failing these means the boss gets a second, or third or more, chance at life and costs Ash a bit of his own. Success of course means a beautifully visceral death for the boss.
There are a few side things to do in the game, side missions to complete for a few customization options and “The Island”, a location where the killed monsters are sent to be put to work. There are also special sections with the wheel that see Ash without his guns and performing stunts, instead of killing enemies, while this does occur minimally in gameplay, it is more of a part of the side missions. The side aspects of Hell Yeah! are kind of a let down, most rewards are simply customization options that will probably only cater to completionists. Even worse, some of the side missions are needlessly difficult, having to restart a mission because of failure is fine, but the fact that moving platforms and obstacles don’t reset to a preset position for each mission means that failure can be unavoidable creating needless frustration. The Island has its own little issues, for the most part the progress there is slow and what it provides almost isn’t worth the time. Perhaps if it gave more or faster it would be useful, but unless the game is being played over the course of a great many days The Island almost isn’t worth the time.
Visuals and Audio:
The visual style of Hell Yeah! is bright and colorful, much more than one might in Hell, but there is a great variety of environments from the expected fiery molten lava of a volcano, to the less expected clean marble interior of a casino, to the very bright and shifting nature close to a psychedelic trip. The styles of customization include anything and everything, so that Ash can look something that anyone will enjoy, while the wheel itself has a few interesting skins that all look good from plain blade schemes indicating upgrades to pretty detailed with elephants.
While the game doesn’t really have any voice acting there is still fun to be had with the audio. Music is pretty interesting, though only really two songs stand out throughout the game, those being the ones with actual lyrics. Very reminiscent of those fun songs in other games over the past few years, they are however integrated less effectively in the game as they act only as background music or over the credits. Ash does make it a point of bring them up, as it annoys the hell out of him, but there might have been a somewhat better way to bring them together without just beating players over the head with it. Regardless, the music does have a nice blend of silly and rock to fit the tone and subject matter effectively.
Overall: Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit is a fun little game that seems to be trying pretty hard to be more. The gameplay is solid and fun, but after getting to know what is expected, blowing through the game after the last upgrade is pretty easy. The additional features might have added some depth to the game, if they had been a bit more effective, but as they are they act as little more than a bit more play time after the game is done. This isn’t a bad game by any means of the word, just not as much as one could possibly hope. Fans of this type of game should enjoy it for what it is however, which is why I’m give Hell Yeah! a
Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward Developer: Chunsoft Publisher: Rising Star Games / Aksys Games Platforms: Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation Vita (Reviewed) Release Date:US October 24, 2012 – EU/AU November 23, 2012 Price:$39.99 – Available Here
Overview: A couple of years ago, Aksys Games released a rather unique title onto the Nintendo DS. Developed by Chunsoft, 999: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors was a risky title that focused on storytelling and puzzle solving. Thankfully the title turned into quite a success overseas thanks to its warm reception and when word began circulating that a second game would be made, fans were overjoyed. Now this second title has made its way overseas in the form of Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward. Now have Aksys and Chunsoft outdone themselves with this release? Let’s find out.
Story: Similar to 999, nine different people have been abducted by an unknown kidnapper who has trapped them inside of a strange building with only a door with the number 9 on it as the way out. Players step into the shoes of Sigma, a male college student who can tend to be a bit perverted at times. Sigma and his fellow abductees are suddenly introduced to a strange game that they must play to escape.
They will be forced to play the “Nonary Game: Ambidex Edition.” Each of the players in the Nonary Game have a watch attached to their wrist which displays a number. This number can either increase or decrease depending on how much each player in the game trusts one another. You see, players must choose to either ally or betray a fellow player, or sometimes a team of players, that they worked with during the most recent puzzle sequence.
If both teams choose to co-operate, then they both gain “BP” which increases the number displayed on their watch. However if someone chooses to betray their partner, then they will gain BP while the other person loses BP. If both teams choose to betray one another, no points are gained. If a player manages to obtain 9 BP then they will be able to escape by opening the #9 door. On the flipside, if a player’s watch reaches zero, then they will be killed via a poison injected by the watch.
Now while this would usually be something simple to understand, a very bunny AI running the Nonary Game informs the group that Zero is actually one of the nine people in the group. This immediately causes a sense of distrust amongst the group. Who will survive this twisted game of betrayal? Well it is up to you to find out.
Virtue’s Last Reward’s storyline is presented in a “choose your own adventure” style of gameplay where various choices made throughout the story will direct the player down certain plot lines. These choices can range from picking your partners, to voting and even minor decisions. It is worth noting that players can always access an in-game flowchart which shows what storyline they are on and when the next diverging point will be.
Some people may be a bit annoyed however that there can be certain stopping points in a story. What I mean by this is the fact that certain story paths that follow a certain character or plot device can be abruptly ended if the player has not advanced far enough in one of the other paths. This isn’t too much of an issue as jumping back into a specific story is very easy through the use of the flowchart, but it can be disheartening to find yourself engrossed in a specific story path only to have to start over to unlock the rest of it.
It is worth noting that there are plenty of story paths to take and they do not always end well for the player. That being said, any more on the story will enter spoiler territory as Chunsoft has created a complex storyline that is packed with some stunning plot twists, with decisions met with opposite outcomes depending on what you pick. While many would have found it difficult to outdo the story found in 999, the company has easily surpassed their previous masterpiece by not only presenting a more complex and varied story but also more developed characters than the previous game.
Visuals: It is interesting to see that Virtue’s Last Reward has changed from simple character sprites into 3D models. Now this is a rather big change considering how roughly 75% of the game features visual novel styled scenes where the players talk with one another. Now while some people may have preferred the original sprites presented in 999, VLR’s 3D models are gorgeous and have some rather fluid motions and nice expressions as they react to various situations. It is worth noting that the “mouth flaps” often do not line-up well with the English dub. These models shine the brightest during miniature cutscenes which are scattered throughout the game’s story.
The environments themselves are also quite stunning in appearance and despite the fact that the player is locked away in a strange facility; there is a decent amount of variety in the areas that you are exploring. It is worth noting that thanks the Vita’s larger screen, it is easier to uncover some of the secrets hidden away in the environment, something that can be essential to solving certain puzzles.
Audio: It will please many people to know that Aksys has chosen to include the original Japanese voice work with Virtue’s Last Reward alongside the English voice track which was recorded for the release. Both versions feature some incredible voice work and the English dub does have a few familiar voice actors playing rolls so anyone who happens to be an anime fan may recognize some of the voice actors. It is worth noting that the game gives the player a chance to choose between dub tracks whenever you load up the game, giving you a chance to easily flip back and forth.
As far as background music goes, Virtue’s Last Reward has a quality sound track full of suitable music for the game. The developers have also done a nice job of making sure each piece of music fits perfectly with the mood portrayed at the time whether it is in the middle of a puzzle or during the story segments of the game.
Gameplay: In-between every visual novel story segment, players must team up with a fellow member of the group to solve a puzzle. These are the escape portions of the game which involve solving one giant puzzle that involves a number of smaller puzzles that, when solved, will unlock the way out.
Interestingly enough, there are now two difficulties players can choose to solve puzzles with. Every puzzle in Virtue’s Last Reward will initially start on the hard difficulty which requires players to solve the puzzle on their own with no help. On the other hand, playing on Easy will allow your partners to provide some extra clues on items and help point you towards the correct way of solving a puzzle. The only time this difficulty truly matters is for obtaining a secondary puzzle answer which will reward a Gold file on Hard mode and only a Silver file on Easy. These files are interesting to read through as they provide some nice backstory on the game and some of the objects and rooms found within the game.
Now with Virtue’s Last Reward jumping to the PlayStation Vita, there are a few new additions to the game which make use of the Vita’s front touch screen. All menu screens can be opened and accessed through the use of the touch screen, including a memo pad to take notes on. Similar to 999, players can choose to tap objects they want to inspect further. On the other hand, you can use the Vita’s analog sticks to maneuver a pointer around the screen; however this is usually more of a hassle than anything else, since simply tapping items you want to look at and turning with the shoulder buttons is much easier.
Now as mentioned earlier, Virtue’s Last Reward features numerous story paths which means that the game can and should be played through multiple times. Now while you can choose to easily jump back into a point in the flowchart whenever you wish, you may still encounter some text that you have read before. Thankfully Virtue’s Last Reward allows players to fast forward through dialogue sequences they have already read. With both of these features introduced players can easily navigate through the storylines and experience one of the best storylines this year.
Overall:
Chunsoft created quite a hurdle for themselves by making a game as excellent as 999 and planning a sequel. However the company has managed to clear that hurdle by a wide-margin by making Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward everything a fan of the first game could have asked for while providing some difficult puzzles and an amazing storyline that should attract anyone unfamiliar with the title. With a great English dub by Aksys providing some icing on the cake, Virtue’s Last Reward is a treat and easily a must-have title for PlayStation Vita owners.

Capcom has kicked of an interesting contest for fans that are looking forward to playing next year’s Remember Me, which is a futuristic action title being developed by Dontnod Entertainment. The story of Remember Me is based around the idea that memories are a commodity in the future which can be sold, traded, stolen and even modified.
This contest they are holding involves creating a fake product advertisement for a fake brand in an attempt to have them featured in Remember Me when it is released. There are five different categories for creations, which are: an alcoholic drink, fast food, a sport/sports event, a dating service, and a children’s toy company.
For those of you who are artistically challenged, there is a second contest being held where you can send Capcom photographs of your chereished memories as well as a description of why they are important to you. Capcom will then select photos at random and use them as a part of the special effects that will be used during Remember Me’s Memory Overload sequences that will occur whenever the main character Nilin performs a signature attack. Details about the contest can be found here and it will end on November 29th.
