Need For Speed Most Wanted Preview

As many fans will remember – EA had released this pretty okay Need For Speed game back in 2005-6 called Need For Speed: Most Wanted.  This new Most Wanted game from Criterion is absolutely amazing. It is incredibly fun to play, has many elements that make you feel like you’re the most wanted person out there.

Interestingly though is this games approach to gameplay. I mean, it is still a racing game, so that hasn’t changed, but, it’s the way that they’ve integrated the racing with other features that make this game feel pretty unique. For instance, there is no longer a predefined storyline in the game other than tracking down and defeating the top 10 most wanted racers in the city. Instead, what you have are things called Speed points, which can be accrued through normal races, initiating police chases, causing malicious damage and more. These activities are also tied in with a kind of social network which records how well your friends did when completing certain tasks.

Aiming to defeat other players scores then would be a pretty goal to have whilst playing this game. If you’re going to be the most wanted, why not be the most wanted out of everybody else? I’m also reasonably certain that these scores are cross-platform as well, meaning that you wont just be competing against a segregated community, but everyone on every system.

In a hands-on demo with EA Australia we were pitted against other gaming journalists and media in a group of multiplayer races known as Speed Lists. A Speed List is essentially a group of 5 different kinds of events that have players going head to head to accrue the most Speed Points to become the most wanted player. Obviously speaking, winning an event would yield the most speed points, however, players can also acquire them in other ways. This can be doing things like causing other players to total their cars, driving maniacally and more. This means that even though a player might do well in races, someone who knows how to game the speed system still might end up beating them. Of course, someone that can do both would be unstoppable.

So far in the multiplayer side of the game my favourite event would have to be drifting. From what I played of it, it seems to be based solely around skill, rather than around whoever seems to know the map the best. Also, it could be because I came first in one of our matchups. I didn’t beat the days drift record, but I was -pretty- close to it.

Graphically speaking, I think we’ve kind of hit an apex point in regards to graphics on consoles. They are not going to get any better I don’t think. This was exemplified when we were shown footage earlier in the day that looked better than the visuals in the version of the game that we were shown. Now, this could be because we were sitting with our noses against the TV’s; or that the footage was recorded from a superior PC version of the game. Either way, the visuals aren’t bad – they’re actually really well done.

What’s also really interesting is the way cutscenes are shown in the game. In a small preview before our hands on, we were shown that each car has its own unique intro video that is shown before a race. This is definitely something that gives each vehicle its own identity and flavour within the game.

My only reservations with this latest title is with the direction towards making it more like Burnout that the developers have taken it. I mean, yes the game is amazingly fun to play and yes it looks and sounds great, but I’m still unsure as to whether or not it has that Need For Speed feel to it. Granted I haven’t played any of the single player just yet and the multiplayer has been incredibly fun, I’m just curious to see how much of the classic has been poured into this game. We already know that visual customisation has been lost somewhere, let’s hope nothing else has.

Overall Need For Speed Most Wanted is an incredibly fun game to play and I would easily recommend it on that alone. However, it also looks great and seems like it has a great social networking feature built into it so competitive gamers will definitely be wanting to check this out when it launches.

Okami HD dated for North American release

With Tokyo Game Show kicking off, pretty much right now at the time of this writing, it seems that Capcom has chosen to give us Western games a bit of a treat by letting us know when they are going to be releasing Okami HD on the PlayStation Network.

Gamers who want to play with everyone’s favorite wolf Amaterasu will be happy to know that the game is slated for release on October 30th in North America. With a relatively cheap price tag of only $19.99 it will be hard to turn down this absolutely beautiful game which can be played with both the PlayStation Move as well as the basic controller.

Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors Getting a New Cover

Fans of the now cult classic Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors are surely looking forward to the follow-up coming out for the Vita and 3DS, Zero Escape, but Aksys still want you to know where the roots of the series began. Today, it was announced that a new cover would ship with a reprint of the original 999, giving new and old fans alike another reason to snag the DS game up.

Ben Bateman, editor of Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors explains:

For “Zero Escape” we wanted to create a branding umbrella that VLR [Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward], 999, and any future games could rest under comfortably—a little like the “Ace Attorney” brand, if you will. To do that, we thought about what it was that defined 999 and VLR and was common to both games, and eventually settled on the character of Zero and the idea that each game involves a dangerous escape. Hence, Zero Escape, which has the nice, ominous double meaning of “You have zero chance to escape.”

Yes, 999 is awesome. New or old cover, if you have yet to play this game, now is the time to invest folks as Zero Escape is coming, and the knowledge of the first title will surely benefit players later on.

Phoenix Wright 5 Trailer Released at TGS

Fans of the Turnabout Courtroom / Ace Attorney series of games will be super excited to see that Capcom have released the latest trailer for the upcoming 3DS game in the franchise. This is the 5th game in the main branch of the series and features everybodies favourite defence attorney Phoenix Wright.

What’s interesting about this particular trailer is that Maya, Phoenix’s sidekick from the original games on the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS, is nowhere to be seen. Instead we have this cool looking girl that looks like she’s from a Sci-Fi series, rather than the mystical occult.

Be sure to check out the trailer embedded below for more info.

Zombies Teased for Call of Duty: Black Ops II

Yes folks, Black Ops II will be bringing back the much loved zombie maps to the Call of Duty franchise, which is the main element fans of Treyarch’s entries look forward to. On September 26th, a full trailer for the mode will be released to show off some of the undead themed maps, but until then, a new teaser has surfaced to hold us all over until then.

Not too much is shown other than a creaky old bus, but I’m sure this will have to do with the first map that will be revealed in the coming future. Check out the teaser below, and let us know what you want to see in Black Ops II’s zombie mode in the comments below.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch screens sneak out of TGS

With Tokyo Game Show kicking off, Namco Bandai has chosen to release a few new screenshots for Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, one of which features some English text as it shows off the game’s battle system.

For those who don’t know, Ni no Kuni was developed by Level 5, a company known for a number of impressive titles as well as Studio Ghibli, which is known for their impressive anime movies such as Spirited Away. Currently Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is set to hit stores in North America on January 22nd next year exclusively on the PlayStation 3.

Dragon Ball Z For Kinect’s latest screens put you in the action

I’m sure anyone who has ever watched Dragon Ball Z or played one of the many games that have been released in the series has at least once dreamed they could do things like what is shown in the franchise. Well, you still won’t be able to do anything like that in real life, but you will soon be able to at least act like you can.

With the release of Dragon Ball Z for Kinect only a few weeks away, Namco Bandai has chosen to release a number of new screenshots for the game which can be seen below, including some anime footage of Super Saiyan Bardock. Those looking to pick up the title can do so in a couple of weeks when the game is released on October 9th.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 fighters get a dose of Nintendo costumes

With Tekken Tag Tournament 2 coming to the Wii U as a launch title, there will be a number of special features added into the game to make you want to try it out on the new Nintendo platform. Perhaps one of the most interesting additions are a number of Nintendo themed costumes such as Armored King in Ganandorf’s outfit and more.

Besides the new costumes, players will also be able to take part in a new Mushroom battle where players will be able to pick up mushrooms that will make them bigger, or smaller if they grab a poisonous mushroom. There will even be a special star that will make them invincible, just like it would in Super Mario Bros. Take a sneak peek at these features in the latest screenshots below.

English Tales of Xillia screenshots revealed

It has been awhile since Namco Bandai released Tales of Xillia in Japan, in fact there has already been a sequel announced at this point. However those of us in the West should be encouraged to know that Tales of Xillia is still on its way to JRPG fans in North America and Europe.

While Tales of Xillia is currently set to be released sometime in 2013, Namco Bandai has chosen today to release a number of screenshots which can be seen below, as well as a few which contain English subtitled scenes, combat sequences, exploration and anime cutscenes as well.
