Ubisoft Autumn Digital Days 2013: Hands-On Coverage

Ubisoft-Digital-Days-2013-Horizontal-Logo-01

Yesterday, I attended the inaugural Ubisoft Autumn Digital Days 2013 event. This event has been held in the past – specifically in France as the Spring Digital Days – but this was a first for Australia and the Southern Hemisphere at that. Present were a total of 8 titles ready for hands-on time, and another that was included in the brief opening presentation, but was curiously missing on the floor. Although I didn’t get to play every last one before I had to leave (which bummed me out), I will be giving you my impressions of the ones I did play, along with newest assets, in this article.

For the remaining titles I simply observed, click here for my hands-off impressions as well as overviews and brand-new assets.

Note: These are titles across multiple platforms that, come release, will be available for $20 or less – except for Might & Magic X Legacy. That said, the RRPs have not been set in stone just yet, but that’s the official projected price range that you can bank on.

 Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon

Far-Cry-3-Blood-Dragon-Badass-Pause-01

Let’s start off strong, shall we? We were treated to the official reveal trailer (embedded below) for Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon before the pleasant surprise announcement that it would also be playable! There were six stations housing the title, and as soon as the presentation was over, almost everyone flocked to them. This game is just pure awesome. In Ubisoft’s words; “Think of it as the third movie in an action franchise… it’s got a bit tired and long in the tooth.” In this case, that’s a good thing because it’s all tongue-in-cheek…a homage to the action films of the 80s, but also a parody.

Playing the game will be 100% familiar to Far Cry 3 owners as the gameplay is identical. But that’s not to say it doesn’t feel fresh, or like a worthy experience to be had. Literally everything else has been altered to reflect a retro “VHS reality”; the art style, the cheesy dialogue, the old arcade-like 2D cinematics, future-tech weaponry, new animations (Colt rests the shotgun on his other forearm and reloads by lobbing the shells into the chamber), enemies have been melded with cybernetics (as have the local fauna…Cyber-sharks, anyone?) and mutants and cyborgs populate the lands as do actual blood dragons that shoot lasers from their eyes!!

Far-Cry-3-Blood-Dragon-Omega-Door-01

You now “pilfer” Omega soldier corpses in order to acquire their “Cyber-hearts” which you must throw like the rocks of Far Cry 3 (still in-game, but are dice now) in order to lure away the blood dragons. And don’t forget the ability to flip-off your enemies! Double bad-ass! I also need not mention how amazing it is to hear Michael Biehn’s (Terminator, Aliens) voice and delivery of lines such as “I’ve arrived at the Dam. Goddamn it’s big!” and the simple classic “Fuck yeah!”.  The tutorials are also delivered in a hilarious way as they pop-up continuously one-after-another, disallowing you the chance to even try out the related action before asking “Annoying, isn’t it?!”. I laughed at an early instruction that said; “Press ‘A’ to demonstrate your ability to read.”

The presentation has also experienced a facelift, with menus looking like those old DOS interfaces. The level upgrades system has been retooled as you are given new skills automatically after reaching a certain XP level (0, 1-5, 6-10, etc.). Collectibles and side missions return, but you now instead collect VHS tapes, TV sets and scientists’ letters. The soundtrack by Melbourne-based music group Power Glove (how appropriate) is amazing, sounding exactly like the inspirations they and the developers looked to. Finally, according to Creative Director Dean Evans, “the game has about 8 hours of content”, so soak that in. I can’t wait for May 1st.

“Mark IV-Style Motherfucker!”

Flashback

Temporary-Flashback-Packshot-01

This was a genuine and welcome surprise… a re-imagining of the original title of the same name, which was released way back in 1992! It’s still a side-scroller, and what’s encouraging is that a third of the members of the developer VectorCell were part of the original’s core team, and trust me – you can put your faith in them because it feels like Flashback. As someone with experience with the software, I instantaneously recognised the Unreal Engine behind the updated graphical façade and controls. Conrad has aged well in this modern era of gaming too.

It was entertaining to see so many people gush at how true to the original and nostalgic this game is. The only environment available for play was the opening jungle section, but the reveal trailer below indicates that we will be travelling to much more diverse landscapes come release. We’ve also been told that, while many familiar faces will make an appearance, the story has a fresh and shiny coat of paint and will be introducing new characters and twists that you will not easily forget.

Flashback-Concept-Art-01
Early Concept Art

The demo version we played was on the Xbox 360. The controls are simple enough: ‘A’ to jump (+ left thumbstick upwards to grab onto a ledge), right thumbstick to aim and ‘RT’ to shoot, ‘B’ to roll and ‘LT’ to crouch. Those are the basics. You can also pick up explosive fruit with ‘X’ (your action button) once you begin to encounter them and aim and throw them like a grenade. Initially, there are attack drones and electrified platforms that pose physical threats with a deeper emphasis on puzzles.

While the original utilised ‘flip-screening’ (a limitation of the tech), this one has an attached camera that moves with you once you reach the edges of the screen. I enjoyed my brief session with the game, and was assured of a considerable XP progression system which I glossed over in the ‘back menu’ as it wasn’t fully implemented yet. Through it, character and equipment upgrades can be can be managed. The heart and soul of the franchise is intact and fans will absolutely love this iteration.

The game does not have a solid release date just yet, but it will be hitting XBLA and the PSN store sometime this year.

Rayman: Jungle Run

Rayman-Jungle-Run-DLC-01

Rayman: Jungle Run has been out on iOS and Android platforms since September 20th of 2012, but what warranted it’s presence at the event was the availability of the latest update content, which includes 20 all-new levels. There were two iPads available for play. I had never played the game to begin with, so my impressions are on the overall title. I found it to be very fun and surprisingly comfortable to play on the iPad (I’m always surprised by great iPad gameplay). There are two mechanics you need to be aware of and that’s it: attack and jump, which have dedicated ‘touch-buttons’ in the corners of the bottom of the screen.

Basically, all you have to do is time your jumps to gather as many coins as you can throughout each level’s course, and attack certain obstacles/environmental elements that then react and evolve to become a part of the gameplay – such as these pods which blossom into bouncy flowers when hit. Elements such as wind come into effect and change your direction, and with this new free DLC update, new powers and worlds are introduced such as the Pirate Ship and Land of the Livid Dead. Boss battles have also been integrated, although in this context they are pursuit/escape sequences (get a glimpse in the screenshot above).

I found it to be very elegant and intuitive, and will definitely be purchasing it for my iPhone 5 now. As I mentioned, the mammoth update with the aforementioned content is free, so you already own the game, there should be absolutely no reason not to download it. Check out the update’s dedicated trailer below as well as a small gallery of key art and new screens.

Prince of Persia: The Shadow and the Flame

Prince-of-Persia-SATF-01 Prince-of-Persia-SATF-02

This is a game that I don’t think many would have expected, or particularly wanted if I’m being Frank (who’s Frank?!). The revamp of a classic in Prince of Persia 2, the Shadow and the Flame preserves the same characters and story, but adds new weapons and powers and is a little more concise and modernised, especially in the control scheme as made ostensibly clear by its reincarnation on the iPad. I played parts of two levels and quickly became frustrated by the lack of intuitiveness in using the right hand side of the screen as your jump panel and the left for your movement. You don’t just tap the screen to jump; you must swipe in the desired direction.

Luckily, the game is much more forgiving than the original in terms of how it handles trial and error – and you will be thankful for this as falling or missing a platform jump is common. The same gesture-based controls apply to combat, which gets tedious fast. To be honest, this was my least favorite game in Ubisoft’s digital line-up…it wasn’t fun and just plain agitated me at times. Ubisoft Pune – the developer – has suggested to us that there will not be any new levels or environments per se, but replay-ability will be pushed via in-store purchases which enhance the experience. Yeah…if it hasn’t lost you already, it probably has now.

Check out the reveal trailer below. Prince of Persia: The Shadow and the Flame will be available on “smartphones and tablets”. Release date is TBD.

Ubisoft Autumn Digital Days 2013: Hands-Off Impressions

Ubisoft-Digital-Days-Portrait-Logo-01Yesterday, I attended the inaugural Ubisoft Autumn Digital Days 2013 event. This event has been held in the past – specifically in France as the Spring Digital Days – but this was a first for Australia and the Southern Hemisphere at that. Present were a total of 8 titles ready for hands-on time, and another that was included in the brief opening presentation, but was curiously missing on the floor.

I have given my thoughts on the ones I got to play, along with their newest assets, here. This article, however, includes my hands-off impressions of the remaining titles I simply observed, as well as their overviews and latest assets.

Note: These are titles across multiple platforms that, come release, will be available for $20 or less – except for Might & Magic X Legacy. That said, the RRPs have not been set in stone just yet, but that’s the official projected price range that you can bank on.

Cloudberry Kingdom

Cloudberry-Kingdom-05

Set for release across almost every relevant platform (XBLA, PSN, PC, MAC, PS Vita, Wii U) very soon, Cloudberry Kingdom is a game that saw a lot of play at the event. It was available on two Wii U stations. The talk of the journos in attendance seemed to be focused on how well the game controlled and the sheer fact that a “trials” genre game is being prepped for release on major consoles. Although the game may have a cute and colourful aesthetic, I witnessed many player deaths, which was reassurance enough that this game becomes quite tough as the levels progress. At first, not so much, but that’s just like every other game’s difficulty curve.

You play as Bob, attempting to balance the powers of the world at large and secure the fate of Cloudberry Kingdom, whilst also saving the endlessly bored Princess one more time. Perhaps their love could be the key to defeating the manic Kobbler and the powers of the mysterious Orb. Eh, maybe not. Happily ever after this may not end, just as it began. Despite Bob being called the hero in this tale, there are actually 10 hero types to choose from with more to unlock. You can even create your own in the ‘Hero Factory’. Oh, and Kevin Sorbo did voice work for the game… like how nonchalant that was? HERCULES HIMSELF is in this game!

Essentially, the number of levels is infinite as they are procedurally generated. Difficulties can be adjusted and levels can be saved and shared with your friends. Local co-op is also featured (couch co-op baby!) with up to 4 players able to join in the fun of specialised co-op modes. Single-player modes for this platformer range from Campaign, Free Play and Arcade. Look for it in the coming weeks, not months. Check out the Dev Diary below as well as a gallery of screenshots.

Might & Magic X Legacy

Might&Magic-X-Legacy-KeyArt-01It’s been 10 years since Ubisoft bought the rights for Might & Magic games from 3DO, who are now closing down. And finally, after a decade, Might & Magic X Legacy is near. Its release date has not been confirmed, but it’s near. Varn, Terra and Enroth are no more as the new world of Ashan has come to the fore, a land where the forces of Order and Chaos wage an endless battle via their respective Dragon-Gods.

You will play as a member of a four-person party entrenched in the politics and intrigue of the city of Karthal. In this post Might & Magic: Heroes VI time, Karthal has fallen prey to competing factions vying for its control as it is on the verge of secession. The actions you take in this authentic solo-experience will determine its fate. This RPG allows you to mold and lead a group of warriors into battles of mythical proportions, collecting ancient treasures along the way.

4 races, 12 classes and thousands of possible combinations later and you can have your dream party. Each class has their own unique skill system, so choose them strategically to fit your play style during the turn-based encounters with all manner of creatures and bosses. Level them up, gain powerful artifacts and accomplish special quests. Travel across cities, through dungeons and trap-laden labyrinths and solve mind-bending puzzles and riddles along your journey.

Seeing the game in person, I must tout its graphical quality and easy to grasp U.I. This is the only title that will be priced at a higher price point than the rest, but for good reason; this is a complete PC RPG experience. Check out the character/environmental concept art and screenshots in the gallery below!

Shootmania Storm: Elite

Shootmania-storm-concept-art-01

We here at Capsule Computers have been covering this fast-paced shooter from the very get-go. It officially launched as a PC digital download via ShootMania.com, Steam and other digital retailers the yesterday – the day of this event! Designed for open, competitive gaming, this skill-based shooter is easy to pick up but hard to master. It easily drew the loudest reactions from attendees…mostly out of rage because they kept getting pwned! But nonetheless, everybody seemed to be having a good time with it.

In particular, one mode called Elite was explored. In it, 2 teams of three take turns attacking and defending, whereby 1 unlucky player fights all 3 defenders on each round. A one-shot kill rifle is afforded to the attacker, while the defenders have close-range weapons. The attacker wins the round one of two ways: eliminating all defenders or capturing a point (which only becomes available after a set time period). The defenders can also win by one of two ways: hitting the attacker three times or having the timer run out.

Shootmania Storm is part of the ManiaPlanet platform and ecosystem, which gifts gamers the powerful tools they need to create their own maps, game modes, graphic assets and videos, but also allows them to create and manage their own teams and tournaments, and  interact with the lively ShootMania Storm community. The open beta was launched in February, and now you can play the full release. Check out the launch trailer below as well as a bunch of screenshots.

Spartacus Legends

Spartacus-Legends-BoxArt-01This is the culprit…the title that did the disappearing act, unless it turns out I should be medically diagnosed as ‘blind as a bat’ for missing it. Coming out for the XBLA and PSN, this R 18+ rated title by Kung Fu Factory based on the TV show allows you to experience all of its best moments of combat and pave your own destiny as a legend of the arena!

In living out your gladatorial fantasies as a Lanista, you will build your own Ludus and find eternal glory on the battlefield. You will have to manage, train and equip your warriors for battle! …okay, I have no idea what half of that terminology means, but it sounds intimidating.

And if these screens and trailer below are any indication, this will be a brutal game indeed. Check them out! The game should be arriving within mere weeks.

Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works Review

fate-stay-night-unlimited-blade-works-boxart
Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works

Studio:
Studio DEEN
Publisher:
Madman Entertainment
Release Date: March 20, 2013
Format: DVD
Price: $29.95 – Available Here

Overview:
Many of you have probably heard of Fate/stay night and its other bizarrely-named iterations by revered creator Type-Moon. Whether it’s through the iconic character art that’s spread across the anime fan scene, or the endless debates on forums by raging extremists, Fate/stay night is one those topics which you either enjoy and invest in, or take at face value and move on.

Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works is a movie adaptation of one of the three possible routes of the original visual novel. While the TV anime series got a bit creative and mixed all three paths into one flawed narrative, Unlimited Blade Works focuses solely on the second route. This culminates in a tighter viewing experience, but one that still struggles to define its narrative and background universe.

unlimited-blade-works-review-03

Story:
I cannot stress enough how one must be familiar with the anime series at least, if not the visual novel. While anime movies that summarise a series can be executed with flair, many fall flat as enjoyable stand-alone titles that offer more than just a recap with fan service. It is all the more remarkable then that Studio DEEN has attempted to not only incorporate a large chunk of the anime plot, but cram all-new story elements with a conclusion in just 107 minutes.

If this sounds to you like a recipe for disaster, you’re probably right. But that depends on who you are. If you’re jumping in without knowing what’s going to happen next, be prepared for a frustrating experience that will leave you scratching your head if you try to delve too deep in the marginally explained plot. If you have a grasp on the characters and the alternate concept of the story to the anime series, then there is something to gain from this movie even if it’s only a tantalising glimpse of the full picture.

unlimited-blade-works-review-02

Those familiar with the the Fate/stay night story will recognise all the elements as the plot starts to unravel in short bursts. The opening scene is a genuine highlight of the movie, explaining the premise and generating excitement as the events of the prologue play out in tune with the credits. Fuyuki City plays host to the secret Holy Grail War where a so-called omnipotent device selects seven Masters known as Magi, who in-turn summon seven Servants to compete to the death for the Grail and its power to grant a wish. Out of the seven, Shirou Emiya is chosen as an unremarkable Magus whose only ability is reinforcing objects.

This fact (along with the rest of the background universe) isn’t explained properly in the movie, nor that his power evolves into Projection magic where he can create any object as long as he is able to conceptualise the “blueprint”. This is central to the relationship Shirou shares with a fellow Master’s Servant, Archer, whose identity isn’t revealed until the end.

Rin Tohsaka, the aforementioned Master, is also key to the Unlimited Blade Works story path in the same way as Saber is key to the Fate path of the TV anime series. However the nature of the movie format simply doesn’t allow their relationship to develop, ending with a romantic conclusion that feels unnatural and forced. Viewers will soon come to accept that jarring transitions between story elements is an unfortunate result of such an adaptation.

unlimited-blade-works-review-04

Visuals:
A true accomplishment of Studio DEEN is the huge leap in animation quality over the original anime series while retaining their established art design. A high budget suited for a theatrical movie coupled with cinematic direction brings out the best in the sweeping action scenes that are scattered throughout the feature.

There are moments when the CG animation looks awkward, particularly in the final battle, but overall it is used non-intrusively and often enhances the background environments. The depth of field and camera techniques should leave the audience in no doubt they’re watching a theatrical movie rather than a standard anime series.

Audio:
The soundtrack does well to highlight the frantic pace of the plot. For anyone familiar with Kenji Kawai’s music (Mobile Suit Gundam 00) you can expect a booming, orchestral score that becomes a natural fit with the quality animation. The main theme especially sounds great and is one you might hunt down to listen to again.

The Japanese audio retains the previous voice actors of the visual novel and anime and complements the story with convincing voice work. I can never get tired of hearing Gilgamesh spout his fabulous arrogance in such a gloating tone.

The English dub sees some changes from the cast of the TV anime, in particular Saber who is voiced by Michelle Ruff rather than Kate Higgins. Her character is meant to sound strong but also soft and capable of changing emotions, however most of the time Saber sounds much older and more robotic than necessary. Illyasviel on the other hand doesn’t sound childish and cute as intended, but completely uncanny and jarring. Quirks aside, most of the English cast performed satisfactorily.

unlimited-blade-works-review-05

Extras:
The DVD comes in standard packaging on a single disc with no additional slips or booklets. You do however get a whole heap of theatrical and home release promotional videos for the movie, but otherwise this is a bare bones release.

Overall:
It is hard to pin down Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works. The movie successfully incorporates an entire route from the visual novel (albeit with omissions due to time constraints), and does so with intense and fluid battles. The music and animation is all there where it needs to be. The plot, however, falls short of what should be an acceptable viewing experience for most people. The fast pace, disjointed progression and expectation that the audience is on the same page proves to be the movie’s weak point.

It seems the primary focus of the movie was to animate the events and battles that fans wanted to see, and to give Rin Tohsaka more screen time for her fans. This might sit well with those knowing what they’re about to see, but I just cannot recommend this movie to any curious anime fan without them doing some serious homework first.
