Moebius: Empire Rising Review

Moebius-Empire-Rising-Box art

Moebius: Empire Rising
Developer: Pinkerton Road
Publisher: Phoenix Online Studios
Platforms: Windows (Reviewed), Mac
Release Date: April 15th, 2014
Price: $29.99 – Available Here

Overview

The title Moebius: Empire Rising alludes to a profound mystery within an ancient period. And that is the adventure gamers will embark on; with intrigue, puzzlement, thrills and the occasional sense of humour. Moebius: Empire Rising paves a way for the inner detective in all of us to sparkle on screen and create a riveting experience, driven by the eagerness to uncover the riddle. The question to consider is whether this mystery is worth the investment, or just another of Jane Jensen’s Gabriel Knight remakes for quest masters?

Story

I wish every game had an intro e-comic. The short strip commences in South Africa, 1987, where we become acquainted with an extremely intelligent boy with photographic memory (IQ: 175), Malachi Rector. His mother, Isabel, on the other hand, is consorting with a man that is not her husband. On her way back home, she gets mauled to death by a lion (a cheeter would have been more appropriate) in front of her son. Several years later, in San Xo’an, Spain, 2013, Malachi is presented as an exceptional antique dealer, who uses his exquisite eye for detail to appraise whether valuables are genuine or fake. When Malachi’s results prove to be of conflict for the client, he becomes the target of three angry thugs. Needless to say, Malachi’s intelligence does not serve as armour for protection, so he spends a week in hospital for recovery.

Moebius-Empire-Rising-Screenshot-001
Malachi Rector showing off his magnificent skills and proving that the chest is not a genuine antique.

The story is divided into seven chapters, each with a different heading and location. The first chapter ‘Into Your Hands’ begins in Rector’s Antiques on 7th Avenue, Manhattan. Malachi; now an arrogant Xanax addict (for calming his panic attacks), returns from Spain to continue his business with Gretchen Stern, the strait-laced and quaint shop manager of his store. Gretchen informs Malachi about a wealthy man, Amble Dexter, who has requested a visit from the antique dealer. Malachi soon discovers that this new client is interested in sending him to Venice to investigate the recent murder of the young beauty, Bianca Cardolo for $50,000. Malachi agrees on the condition that Amble imparts information about the company he works for ‘FITA’ and the reason why Malachi was chosen.

What seems to be a fairly straightforward task turns out to be an ongoing investigation, which takes Malachi from Venice to Cairo, back to Manhattan, then Paris, Zurich and Qatar. In each location, Malachi is instructed to examine Amble’s selected candidates to determine whether there is any historical connection between them and a famous figure in history. The story progression is dependent on the player’s ability to connect the information with the clues to solve the puzzle. However, this becomes more difficult, when Malachi undergoes a painful awakening that his past may be associated with the Moebius Theory – repetitious patterns across history.

Moebius-Empire-Rising-Screenshot-002

The most engaging aspect of the story is the development of characters, particularly Malachi Rector and his ex-military security, David Walker. While they are complete opposites, the duo manage to form an unlikely bond, like the savant and warrior, that serves as a ‘wheel-turner’ for both of them to carry forward and finish the mission together. An added bonus in the story, are David’s pun-driven jokes; “Why was the skeleton lonely? Because it had no body” and Malachi’s dry sense of humour; “Modern furniture in his apartment: Blessedly devoid of any history whatsoever.” Players will definitely enjoy the entertaining banter between the two and other characters, like Masri, who meet the scrutiny of Malachi Rector.

It was disappointing that there was no difficulty setting for the game, as players will find that it is particularly challenging (even with the in-game hints) to locate and make the correct analysis of important figures and antiques, essential to story progression. However, the point-and-click adventure instigates simple interface controls, for players to choose when to initiate conversation, interact with the world, collect items, analyse particular objects and people, and activate items in their inventory.

Moebius-Empire-Rising-Screenshot-003

An interesting example comes from the third chapter, ‘When You Know Who I am’, when Malachi offers a teenage girl an MP3 player in exchange for creating a sexy diversion, so he can steal the VIP badge from the man on the phone. It was really helpful to be able to zoom in on new found items, as well as combine different ones to create new collectibles (e.g. Jumpropes and Hook). The key to completing the story relies on players keeping up to date with their progress on each of the candidates, checking their smartphone, the map, clues and hotspots to investigate.

Visuals & Audio

The animated graphics are not as top-notch as expected, with more than a few noticeable glitches that tend to disrupt the intrigue of the story. For the most part, characters lip movements don’t carry their brilliant voices (great choice in voice actors) through properly and at times it felt like Malachi was looking away from the people he was interacting with. However, I did enjoy the visual display of Malachi’s thoughts of uncertainty as floating words, about whether he should act on confronting situations. In addition to the array of visuals, are several riveting cut-scenes across different chapters, which lead to major discoveries in the story.

Composer, Robert Holmes did a fantastic job with the score; mix and matching an uplifting western and classical theme of drama and suspense. The opening credits for Moebius: Empire Rising performed by Robert and Raleigh Holmes, is sensational and gives players more meaning to the game and the subject matter explored.

Moebius-Empire-Rising-Screenshot-004

Overall

Moebius: Empire Rising is another fantastic ‘metaphysical thriller’ from the creative mind of Jane Jensen. While fans might feel the need to compare Gabriel Knight to the new point-and-click adventure, it is important to make a judgement of the game on its own accord. Moebius: Empire Rising is very well written story, with the right amount of depth needed for an engaging mystery. The flaws are quite minor (if you don’t mind animation jitters), in that the visual performance narrows down to the player’s system specs and monitor’s refresh rate. The verdict comes down to whether players believe they are skilled enough to invest into the Moebius puzzle!

Age of Wonders III Review

Age of Wonders III
Developer
: Triumph Studios
Publisher: Triumph Studios
Platform: Windows
Release Date: 31 March 2014
Price: $39.99 – Available Here

Overview

Age of Wonders III is the latest title in the Age of Wonders series from Dutch developers Triumph Studios. Technically the fourth game in the series, Age of Wonders III picks the series back up after a decade on hiatus. The game merges classic 4X gameplay with RPG mechanics in a high fantasy setting.

age-of-wonders-3-screenshot-005

Story

There are two campaigns in Age of Wonders III. The first campaign follows the High Elves, led by Princess Sundren, after the death of their Prince at the hands of the Commonwealth. The second campaign follows The Commonwealth, led by the Dreadnought Commander Edward Portsmith, as they seek to conquer the world. Age of Wonders III provides a well-polished high fantasy plot that in fully voice acted to boot.

Gameplay

Age of Wonders III has three major parts to the game. The framework of the game is a 4X turn based strategy game, which stands for “eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate.” The genre has been made famous by games like Civilization and Master of Orion. Unlike these titles, each team in Age of Wonders III is led by a hero that works on RPG mechanics. Each hero is one of six different classes: Arch Druid, Dreadnought, Rogue, Sorcerer, Theocrat, and Warlord. Each class have access to a wide range of research and abilities that are exclusive to their class and can create units that are unique to their leader’s class. The six races will dictate the bread and butter units the player will have access. As the leader levels up, players can assign points in different skills, spells, and attributes to create a leader that will fit their play style. During exploration and combat, hero items that can be equipped for bonuses will be dropped.

age-of-wonders-3-screenshot-004

The 4X gameplay is what one comes to expect from titles in the genre. It is challenging, with an extremely high learning curve. Players will need to manage and expand their kingdoms while juggling diplomatic relations with their neighbours and maintaining an army. The spell system includes spells that are used outside combat, which adds an interesting dimension to long term combat between enemies. An enchantment at the right time against an unprepared foe can easily turn the tide of a battle and send the advancing armies back where they came from, providing the caster room to breathe and better prepare their defenses.

Age of Wonders III’s world map is separated into two distinct zones. The surface is the main area players will explore and do battle in. Scattered across the maps are cave entrances that lead to the caverns located underneath the maps. The underground can be inhabited just like the surface, but will provide players the opportunity to sneak around the map undetected and ambush unsuspecting enemies from behind.

age-of-wonders-3-screenshot-003

The 4X gameplay in Age of Wonders III is filled out with the turn based combat that occurs when two armies do battle. Although players have an option of having the AI automatically generate the results of battle, a keen tactician will be able to improve their odds of victory by taking direct command of the troops. Each side will take turns moving their units on a hexagonal battle map. Each unit is assigned a certain amount of action points that must be split between movement, attacks, and abilities. Abilities and attacking will automatically end the unit’s turn. Each unit has three rings of potential movement. The green ring represents the distance a unit can travel while executing all three possible attacks, the yellow caps attacks at two, while the orange ring will only allow a unit to attack once. Hero units have the added bonus of being able to cast spells.

The turn based combat provides an extra dimension to the game that sets the title apart from other 4X titles. The battles are at its best when two massive armies do battle, leading to drawn out and tactically complicated fights. I find the AI to bit a tad on the stupid side, as they have a tendency to be drawn into really obvious distractions. For example, I was able to lay siege to an enemy city and break through the walls by stacking my entire army in one corner of the map outside the city walls, then sending two flying units over the city wall on the opposite corner. The AI promptly sent most of the army to chase down the intruders, while it could clearly see that the bulk of my army was massing for an assault on the opposite end.

age-of-wonders-3-screenshot-006

The biggest failing in Age of Wonders III is its learning curve. The game recommends new players to use the High Elf campaign to learn the ropes of gameplay. Unfortunately, the tutorial teaches only the most basic of game play mechanics, then quite literally hands players a tome of knowledge and tells them to look up whatever may confuse them. The tips that serve as the tutorial from there on in only direct players to the correct page in the game manual that will help them out. 4X games are notorious for their newbie unfriendly approach and Triumph Studios has done very little to help new players become acquainted to the genre.

I highly recommend saving often with Age of Wonders III, especially in the campaign. The death of heroes will result in losing the mission and potentially over a hundred turns of effort over a poor decision or unlucky event. The auto-save function tends to be pretty aggressive in saving after any little bit of movement and only has one auto-save slot. I ended up having to restart a few missions after losing a hero in an inescapable ambush. An auto-save for the last three to five moves would help cut down the hassle of constantly saving and the pain of restarting a campaign and make the game a little more accessible to new players.

age-of-wonders-3-screenshot-002

Visuals

Age of Wonders III sticks to its high fantasy setting in its visual design. Though Triumph Studios did not take much risk in their design, they did an excellent job in creating the world. The turn based battle mode feels like large armies going to battle, thanks to the well-populated units. The graphics themselves are very good. With the visuals cranked up to max, the game is lush, populated, and sharp. My only complaint is that the full sized heroes in the diplomacy screen look a little dated, in contrast to the rest of the game.

Audio

Triumph Studios has put together a wonderful audio experience in Age of Wonders III. The music is a great companion for the many hours the game will suck up. The sound effects are done well. The extensive narration between campaign levels are fully voice acted and the voice acting is spot on.

age-of-wonders-3-screenshot-001

Overall

If you can manage to conquer the learning curve, Age of Wonders III promises countless of hours of gameplay with its great balance of traditional 4X turn based strategy, RPG, and turn based battle mechanics.  Unfortunately, the steep learning curve will mean that only the most dedicated newbies or veterans of the 4X genre will get a chance to enjoy a great game. Although the AI can be a bit spotty, Triumph Studios has created a slick package and a worthy successor to the Age of Wonders franchise.

WAR THUNDER UPDATE 1.39 GOES LIVE – SUPPORTS USER GENERATED CONTENT – GROUND FORCES COMING SOON

WAR THUNDER UPDATE 1.39 GOES LIVE – SUPPORTS USER GENERATED CONTENT – GROUND FORCES COMING SOON

Update 1.39 Also Includes Squadron Battles, New Maps / Missions and Even More New Planes

(MOSCOW, RUSSIAN FEDERATION) – April 17, 2014 – Gaijin Entertainment has announced that update 1.39 for their WWII MMO mega-hit War Thunder is live. This major update is a milestone for Gaijin Entertainment as they release several new features including support for user generated content, squadron battles, the addition of even more planes, and early access to Ground Forces Expansion.

War Thunder now supports user generated content and players have access to special downloadable tools. From now on users are able to create their own planes, from adding tiny details inside the cockpit to truly personalizing their plane’s skin or creating a totally new model. A quick-check system ensures that newly created planes fit within the game’s parameters before allowing players to use them on local PC’s in custom missions or share them with the community.

Players can go one-step further in the creative process by using a stand-alone maps and missions editor. Players can ingeniously build upon existing maps, using them as a blueprint, or go off on an inspired tangent to devise their own brand of new maps. Players can share as well as test out user generated content via a special area housed within the War Thunder forum. Instructions for the creation of content can be found here:

http://wiki.warthunder.com/index.php?title=War_Thunder_CDK

1.39 also offers Squadron Battles  – competitive events for player created factions complete with PvP-rating for squadrons, calculated by the Elo system. In addition, this latest update includes an additional 18 new aircraft, changes in the interface and improvements for player progression.

And last but not least, the update 1.39 will allow players who currently possess codes for the Ground Forces Expansion Closed beta to be the first to play as either a tank or an aircraft 24/7, but not from the very start. gaijin Entertainment will slowly implement Ground Forces Expansion into the update to ensure seamless gameplay.

The new mission called Batte of Kursk is based on the real life historic engagement that took place in July and August 1943 where the Soviets defeated the German strategic offensive, therby turning the tide on the Eastern Front. In the game, Kursk will provide players with AI-tanks,field artillery and planes fighting alongside real players
