Cosmic DJ is a music generator of intergalactic beats across a galaxy of madness. The bizarre and intriguing title, which originated on iPad last year, is currently available via Steam’s Early Access Program for Windows and Mac. What is significantly different about Gl33k and Devolver Digital’s game is the ability for players to create and share music with an eccentric cover artwork.
Music fanatics are invited to take on the role of Cosmic DJ – a robot who is driven by the power of music. However, bad vibes have surfaced within space because of the villainous STEVE4, who has hijacked the “Jamtennas.” The campaign mode takes players on a crazy music adventure, with six missions (five currently available) for players to gain back control of the Jamtenna Network. In addition, there is a quick play mode for players who are more interested in doing their own jamming sessions. Based on the preview, it is fair to say that Cosmic DJ is better suited to casual gamers of all ages, who enjoy the art of musical improvisation.
In order to dominate the Jamtenna Network and defeat STEVE4, Cosmic DJ needs to get all the transmitters working again. The first task is to track down the drummer, keyboard player and guitarist of the Robot Band (who have turned away from their love of music for deadbeat jobs) and reunite the group by reminding them how sweet being in a band is. The next step is to resolve a lover’s quarrel by returning to the happy phases of their relationship (gotta love that hang gliding date) and sending out good vibes with the power of love. The third objective is to re-establish the power of friendship between two best mates by building music around their most fond memories (can’t go wrong with laser skating). The fourth goal is to reassemble the space corgi, ‘Potato’, who got blasted to bits when STEVE4 sent out bad tunes through the network. The final mission is a showdown with STEVE4 at a dance party, with the power of the Jamtenna Network it is impossible to lose.
Cosmic DJ features the adorable Corgi, ‘Potato’ (a.k.a. Potato Pancake Wisirup) owned by Kat Wenske.
The gameplay is very basic, mainly because it is more improvisational than technical. Players are given the choice of several groovy instruments, including; keyboards, guitar, drums and voice samples to sequence into their 32-beat mixed jams. For each mission there is a particular set of diverse and funky sounds that work really well, such as; attack rave, slap bass, girls gone mild, synth ping, dog life, horse laser and saw floor. Using the keys Z, X, C and V (also A, S, D, F works) which are displayed on the four pads, players can tap their own beats. Alternatively, players can also use a grid sequencer, with the click of the mouse to create the perfect rhythm. On the off-chance you don’t like the combination of sounds; you can clear what you have done and start over as many times as you want to.
Once the set bar of the jam metre is reached, players can submit their creations. The best part is that once each Jamtenna is repaired, Cosmic DJ can listen to their combined recordings and convert their tracks into an MP3 file that can be shared via SoundCloud. This feature allows players to form their own collection of Cosmic DJ hits for future stardom. While the song recording is in progress, players can design their own cover artwork using a range of themes, drawing and sticker tools to personalise the new track.
As there is no differentiating factor in the looping process of gameplay, players are confined to creating songs in a very repetitious environment. It would be nice to see a multiplayer component, which would enable more players to jam more competitively and get more out of the Cosmic DJ experience. Having a wider network of players creating songs together would not steer the focus away from the joys of embracing music.
Cosmic DJ is defined foremost by the intense audio and visuals on display. To be completely honest, the radiating flashes of unclear animations of the 3D digital world were extremely disorienting and dramatized considerably, for the one-dimensional storyline. With the overlapping sound mixing and overwhelming visuals, it was more challenging to keep my eyes on the screen than anything else. In terms of audio, the robotic voiceover could be improved, as well as the “cheesy” dialogue. For example, in the mission to do with the lover’s quarrel, the DJ says, “Sometimes people don’t realise that love IS like a video game. There are challenges, you can level up and you can make a nice coat out of wolf pelts.” Nevertheless, the music making instruments are great fun and player’s will find that each song they create is incredibly unique.
Cosmic DJ still needs some fine-tuning before the game is officially released. The storyline is underdeveloped and does not add to the rhythmic experience; rather it serves as background imagery for players. The developers might want to consider expanding the game for multiplayer functionality, with the ability for online players to vote on the best jams. While the game is still in the early stages of development, it is currently up and running for play on Steam. For those who prefer games that focus primarily on being fun and silly, than Cosmic DJ is definitely a track on the to-do list.

Santa Ana, Calif., (May 19, 2014) – Nicalis, Inc., developer and publisher of independently awesome video games, announces that the turn-based fighting game Toribash—developed by Nabi Studios—has been released on Steam.
“Steam is going to be amazing for Toribash. Even just getting access to the built-in auto-update has made rolling out new features faster and easier. Having achievements pop up in real time is very cool too,” said resident martial arts master at Nabi Studios, Hampus Soderstrom. “We had always planned to do a friend list with some kind of messaging system, but it never came together because the overhead was just too much for a game like Toribash. With Steam, though, we get access to a great friends system, much better than the one we have in Toribash right now.”

The game features advanced physics, full dismemberment, decapitation, and comic-style blood.
The tactical-style fighting in Toribash allows players to plan each move in minute detail. A ghosted preview of how your changes will affect your fighter’s movements is presented seamlessly as you contract and contort muscles in an attempt to become the ultimate Toribash champion.

Overview Over the course of the first two episodes in Season Two of The Walking Dead Telltale Games have managed to turn Clementine from a girl who we used to protect and try to teach to a survivor trying to do her best in a terrible situation. Separated from everyone she once knew, Clementine found herself a new group only for that group to come with danger far different from a Walker. Now after the events of A House Divided, how will Clementine handle being In Harm’s Way?
Story Of course it is worth noting right at the beginning here that this review will cover events that happened in the first and second episode which means that there will be spoilers for All That Remains and A House Divided from here on, though no significant spoilers for this episode will be revealed.
That being said, those who have already played A House Divided likely realize that a number of their decisions during the final half of that episode will play a role in how many survivors Carver actually managed to capture as a couple of characters might have met their end last episode. Using two separate save files to identify the changes, there are some noticeable differences depending on whether or not these characters survived and it will be interesting to see how their survival will affect things from here on out.
As mentioned, Clementine, Kenny, and the rest of the new survivors have been captured by Carver’s group and have been taken back to Carver’s base, which is more like a prison community than anything else. As we have seen a bit in the past, while zombies are dangerous the humans can be destructive to everything around them and with Carver we have a new villain that players will likely grow to hate after his brutal introduction last episode.
Carver makes for an interesting villain and I say this because although he is a cruel cold blooded killer with a dictator complex that strikes fear into those around him, there is a certain part of me that sees where he once might have been a reasonable person before forced to become the man we see in this game.
With Clementine and the rest of the survivors now a part of Carver’s community there are a number of intriguing situations in place as we meet new characters that are so desperate for help that they are willing to listen to Carver regardless of what he does, as well as those who might be willing to help Clementine and the others escape what Carver has become. That being said, the new characters are a mixed bag with only one of the newly introduced members at Carver’s camp being noteworthy while others are a bit annoying to be honest.
Either way, players are placed in a different situation this time around mainly because there are a number of times that players will need to make specific decisions that will possibly stir up distrust amongst the group as well as side with an old friend or your new ones. Throughout this episode we see a number of characters developed as well as some more choices that, may seem small for now, but at least a few will have major consequences for how things will turn out.
It is worth noting that those who picked up the 400 Days DLC will notice that a number of characters from the DLC might appear at Carver’s camp alongside Bonnie and Tavia depending on who went with you at the end of the 400 Days episode. Their roles are unfortunately rather minimal as they play background characters with only a few lines of dialogue but it is nice to see some sort of callback here.
Gameplay With The Walking Dead: In Harm’s Way we actually aren’t given a ton of gameplay to experience. There are still action pieces but these are spread few and far between in this episode. Instead players will be sneaking around here and there while examining a few areas as well as gathering items, even if it seems like it is nearly impossible to fail getting a specific item, making In Harm’s Way feel just as limiting as the last episode.
The aforementioned action sequences are as satisfying as ever with quick time events or aiming required to strike a zombie properly and it is clear that Clementine is coming into her own as a survivor, even if her height and age are still limiting what she can actually pull off in a bad situation. The decisions one makes throughout the episode also remain the same but it can be said that there are a few brutal ones to make in this episode that can result in a couple of extremely bloody scenes.
Visuals & Audio After a certain scene that players can choose to stay and watch or leave behind, it is clearly evident that Telltale’s comic book art style is the best thing for this series as the amount of gore that can be portrayed in such a style can be gruesome looking without pushing the boundary too far for some to accept. Of course the art style also remains a great looking fit that gives the game a memorable look.
The various voice actors for the series continue to fit their roles quite nicely in this episode which is necessary to deliver the amount of drama that takes place during In Harm’s Way. The way background characters talk while trying to sneak through an area is a nice touch even if getting caught never feels like a problem and the music for the credit sequence is rather fitting.
Overall The Walking Dead Season Two: In Harm’s Way is a brutal episode full of drama and character development as Clementine and the rest of the survivors are forced to deal with Carver and the “safe haven” run with a bloody fist. By delivering such an impactful episode that focused more on the human element than basic survival, this only raised the series’ tension further as we continue to see Clementine grow. As to what she will be growing into and what will happen next after the final events of In Harm’s Way, we will have to wait and see.
