Overview

Batman has always been an extremely popular hero and in the past decade has appeared in more media than any other character. That being said, few expected Telltale Games to get in on the Batman action and when they announced that they would be producing an episodic series, many were wondering just how they would manage to pull it off. Well now that the first episode of Batman: The Telltale Series -Realm of Shadows has been released how does the series kick things off?

Story

Batman: The Telltale Series kicks things off by letting players know that this isn’t a game that will be handling the criminal element of the series with kid gloves as a security guard is shot in the head as robbers break into city hall. While the police arrive on the scene, Batman is already prepared to take down the gunmen who are attempting to break into the mayor’s office.

batman-the-telltale-series-episode-1-screenshot-001This game takes place at a point in time where the name Batman is known by both criminals and hunted by the police as a vigilante but he is still at the beginning of his time behind the cowl since not only is Gordon still a Lieutenant but one of Batman’s standard gadgets, a smokebomb, is described as still being in a trial phase when used to subdue the thugs. Problem is, the thugs weren’t the only ones after something precious being kept by the mayor as Catwoman, or as the game initially calls her, a cat woman, is after a digital device.

After an altercation between the two and fleeing from the scene from the police with the recovered data drive, the focus shifts from Batman to Bruce as we learn that Harvey Dent is running for the mayor’s office with the help of Bruce Wayne’s endorsement and backing. Unfortunately holding a banquet can draw a lot of attention and not only does the reporter Vicky Vale make an appearance but the crime lord Carmine Falcone also shows up to ruffle some feathers. Even, in this storyline, a childhood friend who has since fallen on hard times Oswald Cobblepot appears. With so many moving pieces pulling at Bruce Wayne and Batman trying to keep ahead of the criminals in the area, Realm of Shadows gets things off to a rather satisfying start.

batman-the-telltale-series-episode-1-screenshot-002Batman: The Telltale Series does something few other games revolving around the character do by placing a heavy emphasis on the amount of time spent as Bruce compared to Batman. This is demonstrated by a pleasing sequence during the initial conflict with the armed robbers as the scenes shift from the action back to Bruce recovering from his latest outing while talking, and being treated by, Alfred. This is also reflected well in how Bruce feels more at home in his bat cave, where he is in control, than anywhere else as those around him vie for his attention and power.

In fact, outside of the aforementioned action sequence, an investigation sequence, and a closing action sequence, the game spends the rest of the time focusing on Bruce as he tries to maneuver through the politically charged world he finds himself in, especially when the biggest twists come to light and threaten to tarnish the Wayne family name forever. This certain development is one that I certainly haven’t seen coming and it will be incredibly interesting to see how things play out.

batman-the-telltale-series-screenshot- (4)Choices made by the player so far are rather interesting and smaller in scope for the moment as players can either choose to attempt to placate a mob boss, be extremely aggressive as Batman, and even select between who to trust with vital information but for now these various choices don’t seem to play a major role in how things unfold in this first episode. This means that Realm of Shadows serves as something of a building block for everything that is to come and thankfully it manages to pull it off extremely well by introducing a number of characters that will play a major role in the future, be it friend or foe, and an intriguing storyline that fans will want to keep an eye on.

Gameplay

Batman: The Telltale Series features the same style of gameplay that most are used to when it comes to a Telltale game but this time around things are a bit more stylized. Players will still have the standard sequences of quick time event oriented combat, but this time around many of these fight scenes play out with a bat symbol in the bottom corner that fills up when the player puts in the correct input, allowing Batman to perform a finisher of sorts when the fight is completed. To top this off, there is also a very satisfying sequence where Batman can plan out his attack on a heavily guarded area ahead of time, with players selecting how they want to take down each guard ahead of time before initiating the conflict.

batman-the-telltale-series-episode-1-screenshot-003The exploration sequences also seem to have a bit more heft this time around as Batman, at least in this first episode, is able to examine the scene of a crime and can link together various pieces of evidence in order to piece together roughly what happened. This puzzle element is extremely small but it is a nice touch considering many would be hoping for some detective sequences here.

It is worth noting that the crowd play aspect that was advertised for the game is incredibly simplistic in nature and the majority of users will likely not want to bother with this feature. This is because the feature is primarily meant for users to be in the same room as the player to select various choices and vote on whether or not they liked a specific action as the delays on most streaming services make it impossible to actually implement this feature for a wider audience.

Visuals & Audio

The comic book art styling that Telltale often takes with its properties works incredibly well when it comes to Batman: The Telltale Series. Most familiar characters appear similar to how fans would expect outside of a few who have been reimagined such as Cobblepot, though it is hard to not see Bruce Wayne as a less idiotic Archer thanks to the way he is designed in game. It is interesting to note that there is a bit of customization in the game as players can choose from a handful of colors that they want Batman’s various gadgets to display. It is also worth noting that although I didn’t experience the usual slowdown that comes from Telltale games there were numerous moments throughout the series that character animations came across as either incredibly stiff in nature or completely unnatural.

batman-the-telltale-series-screenshot- (3)As for the voice work this title sports quite a few familiar names who come to work well with the cast of the game, including Troy Baker as the voice of Batman himself and a few other actors that certainly live up to the reputation of the characters they are portraying. It is worth noting that the game does explain that the batsuit features a voice modulator to lower the sound of Bruce’s voice but I found it to be rather iffy sounding in more than a few situations.

Overall

Batman: The Telltale Series kicks things off splendidly with the first episode in this series. While this initial episode doesn’t really give the player much control over how things actually unfold in the episode, it serves as a solid building block to kick off the series with an interesting plotline and a number of familiar characters who can become friends or foes at any time.

Fallout 4: Vault-Tec Workshop Review

Fallout 4: Vault-Tec Workshop

Developer: Bethesda
Publisher: Bethesda
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One (Reviewed)
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $4.99 USD – Available Here

Overview

When Bethesda announced that they were planning to increase the price of the season pass for Fallout 4 to fit the amount of content that was going to be released, it is probably a good thing that the company offered it at the original price for quite a bit since so far the DLC has been fairly underwhelming. With only one substantial piece of content coming from Far Harbor and one so forgettable that it isn’t even worth mentioning, here we are with the second to last DLC for the game, Vault-Tec Workshop. Now that it has been released is Fallout 4: Vault-Tec Workshop worth downloading?

Story

Fallout 4: Vault-Tec Workshop begins with the player receiving a radio transmission on their Pip-boy about a vault in trouble. Upon tracking down the location, Vault 88 is being assaulted by a bunch of Raiders who decided to dig a bit too deep into the side of a cliff and uncovered the vault in the process. Although they are making little progress at unlocking the vault door, the surprisingly alive Overseer continues to warn them to stay away until the player puts them all down.

Once the deed is done and the player opens the vault using their Pip-boy the Overseer believes that she is finally being saved by Vault-Tec and is surprised by the fact that the player is just a Vault Dweller. This surprise doesn’t last long as this Overseer turned Ghoul is completely unphased by the fact that so many years have passed since the world was torn apart by nuclear warfare and is already planning on getting the player to help her complete the tasks that the vault was designed for.

fallout-4-vault-tec-workshop-experiment-screenshot- (1)After being informed that Vault 88 was as far from finished as vaults come, with only the entrance area fully functioning in an effort to put up a front for investors, players must use the Workshop mode to clear out rubble, remove various debris, and activate the rest of the wings of the Vault that stretch all the way into a subway system and even a shop, making it hardly the safest and secure place one would expect.

Once completed and some residents begin to arrive the Overseer gives the player a few quests that involve testing various experiments on the characters that have arrived. Unfortunately these quests are incredibly simplistic in nature and even though one does send the player out into a different dungeon, those who have played the game in any form will have already cleared the dungeon and will simply find themselves walking through corpse filled hallways only to pick up the item at the end.

The rest involves simply crafting an item, attaching it to a terminal, and then powering up both things before telling the completely oblivious NPC Clem to fiddle with it for an hour. Once you run him through all of the tests available then you’re all done as far as the game is concerned, meaning those who wanted to try and run further tests on other settlers that move in will find that option lacking while those looking to see the outcomes of other variables better have an extra save file ready since they cannot be adjusted when chosen.

fallout-4-vault-tec-workshop-experiment-screenshot- (2)These variables are chosen before every test and range from simply providing a better taste to a fountain drink machine to completely suppressing the drinker’s appetite and even going so far to draw images out of a dweller’s brain using an eye exam machine or simply generating a pleasant aroma from a workout bike. Depending on what players choose from with these variables the Overseer will either be happy or so angry she will leave the vault entirely thanks to the results and put the player in charge of what she deems a failure and letting players proceed to simply treat the giant area as any other settlement.

Gameplay

Where Fallout 4: Vault-Tec Workshop fails to deliver on the promise of being able to micromanage and even perform experiments on your various settlers; it does manage to deliver at least through customization options. As players explore the vault for the first time they will find that it is absolutely massive to the point that players can create an absolutely gigantic vault while also taking on Radscorpions, Molerats, Mirelurks, and other beasts that aren’t keen on the player digging through their homes.

Once you manage to clear everything out you’ll find that the game offers a wide array of specifically themed vault style walls, rooms, and corridors to choose from with colors to code what they can be used for such as domestic, military, nursery, and more to choose from and even a massive energy system to construct if they feel. Thankfully, those who explore the vault will find more than enough debris and raw uranium to easily take care of everything without having to worry about tracking down extra items here and there.

fallout-4-vault-tec-workshop-experiment-screenshot- (3)It is unfortunate to say that this also means that the game’s incredibly faulty snap building mode plays a big role in how much you’ll enjoy actually crafting rooms and hallways for your settlers to travel through since it continues to rely on how iffy the system is, often refusing to place pieces how you wish to or simply not being able to put them down altogether thanks to unseen obstacles.  One major addition, at least for gamers on consoles such as myself, is the Vault-Tec population control terminal that allows players to create little quests through the VIP tracker to show exactly where your companions are, meaning if you managed to send someone off to an unknown settlement and lost them, they can be easily found now.

Visuals & Audio

As mentioned before, the wide array of new crafting options in this DLC is fairly impressive as it adds not only the aforementioned vault areas that are nicely color coded, but also a number of fancier items that players have likely been wondering about. This includes things such as clean beds, pristine and unbroken furniture, and in general less destroyed objects to place down to help craft an area that looks far more livable than anything before.

The voice work for the pair of new characters introduced in this DLC is handled well enough for the series, with Clem coming off as the naïve country-boy he is meant to portray and the Overseer being as cold as one would expect for someone who, upon being rescued after over two hundred years, wants to immediately begin experimenting on people.

Overall

Fallout 4: Vault-Tec Workshop manages to offer quite a lot of new objects for players to mess around with as well as an extremely large building space to take advantage of but those looking for any kind of lasting storyline or even the ability to experiment beyond the story’s scopes will be disappointed to hear that once it is completed the area reverts to the standard settlement expansion that fans are familiar with. This isn’t a bad thing by most means as the quests are rather interesting and you’ll want to go through it at least twice to see things taken to two different extremes but beyond the fancy new items you can craft, don’t expect too much else here.

Xbox One S Review

Manufacturer: Microsoft
Release Date: August 2, 2016
Price: $548 AU – Available Here

The Xbox One S is here and to be honest I didn’t really need to get one, but after watching the trailers with the epic dubstep music I just couldnt help myself. This new console promises to be Sleeker, Slimmer and Sharper and to be honest it lives up to most of those expectations.

Microsoft have done an amazing job of listening to the feedback that we gamers have provided them. Gone is the annoying touch sensitive power and eject button, gone is the huge power supply box that was not only an eye sore but annoying to hide from view and gone is the awkward placement of the USB port, because now it sits in the perfect location under the disk tray.

The size however was a huge disappointment. It sure is 40% smaller in theory but it sure isn’t as small as a lot of the images and trailer suggested, was this false advertising a little?

If you want to hear more of my review or see me unbox the Xbox One S then the videos have been provided below.
