Necromancers and More: BlizzCon 2016 Round Up

diablo-iii-reaper-of-souls-concept-art-01

Let’s get the embarrassing bit out of the way first: I was wrong. My original prediction of Diablo 4 did not come true at BlizzCon 2016’s Opening Ceremonies. So if you aren’t at BlizzCon 2016 or didn’t have a digital ticket, this is what you missed.

Diablo III

Blizzard has come up with a very Blizzard-like way to further extend the life of Diablo III without releasing a full blown expansion. While major content updates for Diablo III: Reaper of Souls dried up a couple of seasons ago, it turns out development never halted on the game. Instead, it appears that development was focused on releasing a huge content update in time for the 20th anniversary of the Diablo franchise. That content update will be free, but the rumoured return of the Necromancer will not be. Blizzard has yet to decide the price quite yet, but have released some new concept art including the previously leaked images.

Overwatch

The agonizingly long ARG is finally over with the official Sombra reveal. Sombra is a high mobility offensive hero toting a machine pistol and a range of hacking abilities to debilitate and disrupt the enemy. The abilities sound a bit like a cross between Tracer and Genji, with a little bit of Dirty Bomb’s Phantom thrown in for good measure. Her three main abilities are Hack, which stops abilities and disables first aid kits; Thermoptic Camo, which boosts her foot speed and makes her invisible for a short period of time; and Translocator, which allows Sombra to return to the beacon’s location. EMP is her ultimate, destroying barriers and shields plus hacking all who are caught in its path. To celebrate Sombra’s announcement, there’s a brand new Overwatch Animated Short for Sombra.

Competitive Overwatch players will have a brand new league soon. Blizzard will be using their experience with professional Starcraft II and Hearthstone leagues to run the the Overwatch League. Not much information about the league has been released quite yet, but a pre-season will be starting soon.

World of Warcraft: Legion

Two major patches are on the horizon for World of Warcraft: Legion. Patch 7.1.5 is a smaller content update that will tide players over until 7.2. The Brawler’s Guild is returning along with six Mists of Panderia dungeons in the Timewalking Dungeons cycle. Micro-holidays in the style of the larger holiday events are also being added to the game in hopes of lightening the mood in Azeroth. Of course, every major patch comes with some major class updates which includes increasing the diversity of talents for certain specializations like Marksman Hunters and rebalancing secondary stats for all specializations.

7.2 is on the way with The Tomb of Sargeras raid, the Cathedral of the Eternal Night dungeon, the next chapter of the Class Order campaign, and the return of Legion invasions to Azeroth. Flying mounts will be making it’s appearance in Legion soon. Like Warlords of Draenor, players will need to complete a big chunk of achievements to unlock the privilege of flying around the Broken Shore. Fifteen new artifact traits for each weapon are also being added to existing artifacts, along with new, corresponding relics. Karazhan is also being split into two for the Mythic Keystone dungeons. Much like Black Rock Spire, Karazhan will be split into two four boss dungeons known as Upper and Lower Karazhan.

For PVP lovers, an Overwatch and Heroes of the Storm inspired twist to the traditional battlegrounds are coming. Each week will feature a new battleground brawl with some pretty entertaining rules. As a grizzled old vanilla player, I’m excited to see a variant called Southshore vs. Tarren Mill being added.

Finally, this year’s pet in support of the Make-A-Wish foundation is Mischief the Fel Kitty. Mischief is an adorable little kitty with fel markings across his grey body. Mischief will be available during the month of December and the entire purchase price will be going to support the Make-A-Wish foundation.

StarCraft II

Not much news from StarCraft II, but the final Nova Mission Pack and Alexei Stukov is coming soon. Additionally, the work on the Starcraft franchise and AI is continuing. StarCraft: Brood War competitions between student programmed AIs has been running for several years now. Blizzard is taking the next step by announced their partnership with the team behind Google’s DeepMind A.I.. More details will be released during the The Future of StarCraft II AI panel on Saturday.

Heroes of the Storm

King Varian Wrynn of Stormwind and the raid boss Ragnaros are joining the roster of heroes. King Varian Wrynn will be a multi-class hero designed to switch between defensive and offensive roles as necessary, while Ragnaros wields some incredible fire abilities… as long as he’s in control of Forts.

A new brawl is coming. The asymmetrical brawl starring the pirate Blackheart will see the attacking team assaulting a ghost pirate ship while the defenders try to hold them off until the timer is up. Finally, the Nexus Challenge will be running between November 15th to January 4th that will unlock loot for Heroes of the Storm and Overwatch for anyone who plays 15 Heroes games. Extra Heroes of the Storm loot will be up for grabs for those who play 30 games.

Hearthstone

Last but not least, Blizzard has announced the next expansion pack for their online TCG. “Mean Streets of Gadgetzan” is introducing the three crime families of Gadgetzan: the Grimy Goons, the Jade Lotus, and the Kabal. The three families are represented with 132 new cards that sport faction affiliations along. The expansion pack will be available in early December and pre-purchases are open for 50 packs for $49.99 USD at the Blizzard online store.

Sombra Officially Revealed and Detailed for Overwatch

overwatch-screenshot-084

After teasing fans for months, Blizzard has officially revealed Overwatch‘s newest character Sombra at Blizzcon 2016. This reveal came in the form of a six minute long animated short called “Infiltration” that shows Reaper and Widowmaker teaming up with Sombra as they go after a high profile target, though Sombra’s own intentions don’t quite line up with what the other two are planning.

Alongside this video a full detailed description of Sombra’s abilities and background has been provided by Blizzard and you can check that out below.

Infiltration Short

Sombra Gameplay

Overview

  • Role: Offense
  • Difficulty: Three Stars

Stealth and debilitating attacks make Sombra a powerful infiltrator. Her hacking can disrupt her enemies, ensuring they’re easier to take out, while her EMP provides the upper hand against multiple foes at once. Sombra’s ability to Translocate and camouflage herself makes her a hard target to pin down.

Abilities

  • Machine Pistol – Sombra’s fully-automatic machine pistol fires in a short-range spread.
  • Hack – Sombra hacks enemies to temporarily stop them from using their abilities, or hacks first aid kits to make them useless to her opponents.
  • Thermotic Camo – Sombra becomes invisible for a short period of time, during which her speed is boosted considerably. Attacking, using offensive abilities, or taking damage disables her camouflage.
  • Translocator – Sombra tosses out a translocator beacon. She can instantly return to the beacon’s location while it is active (including when it’s in mid-flight).
  • EMP – Sombra discharges electromagnetic energy in a wide radius, destroying enemy barriers and shields and hacking all opponents caught in the blast.

Biography

  • Real Name: ░░░░░░
  • Age: 30
  • Occupation: Hacker
  • Base of Operations: Dorado, Mexico
  • Affilation: Talon, Los Muertos

One of the world’s most notorious hackers, Sombra uses information to manipulate those in power.

Long before she took up the alias “Sombra,” ░░░░░░ was among the thousands of children who were left orphaned in the aftermath of the Omnic Crisis. With much of her country’s infrastructure destroyed, she survived by utilizing her natural gifts with hacking and computers.

After ░░░░░░ was taken in by Mexico’s Los Muertos gang, she aided it in its self-styled revolution against the government. Los Muertos believed that the rebuilding of Mexico had primarily benefited the rich and the influential, leaving behind those who were most in need of assistance.

Following her many conquests, ░░░░░░ was supremely confident in her skills, but she was caught unprepared when she stumbled into the web of a global conspiracy—one that had also noticed her. With her security irreparably compromised, ░░░░░░ was forced to delete all traces of her identity and went into hiding.

She later reemerged as Sombra, upgraded and determined to find out the truth behind the conspiracy she had uncovered. Sombra launched an even more audacious string of hacks, and her exploits earned her no shortage of admirers, including Talon. She joined the organization’s ranks and is believed to have contributed to its massive cyberattacks against corporations with strong ties to their governments. These efforts incited a popular revolution in Mexico against LumériCo and breached the security of Volskaya Industries, the manufacturing arm of Russia’s anti-omnic defense.

One of the Most Anticipated Titles of the Year Delivers Gripping Story Campaign, Robust Multiplayer Experience and ‘80s Themed Zombies Co-Op Mode “Zombies in Spaceland”

Legacy and Digital Deluxe Editions Include Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, Offering the Ultimate Gaming Package

Launch of Activision’s Infinite Warfare Kicks-Off New Season of Call of Duty World League

All-New Call of Duty PlayStation®VR Experience, Jackal Assault, Available for Free Download on PlayStation®Store

Sydney, Australia – 5th of November – One of the most-anticipated releases of the year is here, as Call of Duty®: Infinite Warfare is available now digitally and at global retailers worldwide. The new title from the #1 top-selling console franchise in North America for seven consecutive years, delivers a bold, new direction by exploring the weight of leadership in an emotional, character-driven narrative. In a first for the franchise, Infinite Warfare introduces an all-new story happening throughout our solar system, delivering gameplay innovations, such as space dog-fighting and zero-g combat, as well as seamless transitions from experience-to-experience keeping players constantly immersed in the action. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is published by Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc. [NASDAQ: ATVI], and developed by Activision’s Infinity Ward.

In another first for Call of Duty®, Infinite Warfare also features the greatest bonus content in franchise history through the Legacy and Digital Deluxe Editions, which include Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® Remastered. A celebration of one of the most critically-acclaimed games in history, Call of Duty® 4: Modern Warfare®, the new remastered version has been completely enhanced for a new generation.

Infinite Warfare is hands-down the best story campaign we’ve had in years and is a leap forward in the fluid, fast-paced action that Call of Duty fans know and love,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision. “It’s a future war but an old school fight. And with a great multiplayer and an over-the-top zombies mode as well, we can’t wait for our fans to start playing. The only question, is which mode are you going to play first?”

Packed with an incredible amount of content and variety, Call of Duty continues to deliver something for all players across three unique modes of play in Infinite Warfare: an epic single-player story campaign that puts narrative front and center as players are taken on a classic journey with unforgettable characters; an all-new, 4-player cooperative zombies mode called ‘Zombies in Spaceland’ that takes players on a wild ride into a 1980’s amusement park; and a deep and rewarding multiplayer mode with robust customization options to suit different play styles, including an all-new weapons crafting system, full eSports integration and much more.

“This is a special year for us and for the Call of Duty community,” said Dave Stohl, Studio Head of Infinity Ward. “We began three years ago with the goal to push ourselves in an all-new direction and take players to places they’ve never been before. In Infinite Warfare, we’re telling a classic war story of good vs. evil, and adding an epic backdrop that lets us introduce a ton of innovative gameplay. Our cooperative mode goes in a completely different direction that combines 1980s inspiration with a crazy, new zombie apocalypse. And, our online multiplayer takes everything that makes Call of Duty multiplayer so engaging, adds exciting Combat Rigs with their unique payloads and traits, introduces the challenge of Mission Teams, as well as the chase of prototype weapons, and then delivers a whole new level of gameplay customisation that gives gamers all the tools to fit their unique playstyle.”

For the first time in franchise history, the Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare story campaign unfolds seamlessly, creating one continuous and immersive experience, with more player agency and autonomy than ever before. In the campaign, fans play as Captain Reyes, a Tier 1 Special Operations soldier who takes the helm of the Retribution, one of Earth’s last remaining warships. Facing a ruthless insurgency led by Admiral Salen Kotch, portrayed by Kit Harington (Game of Thrones), and including the likes of MMA superstar Conor McGregor as Captain Bradley Fillion, Reyes must defend his home against this relentless enemy force. Along with the military, grounded combat that is hallmark to the series, the game allows players to pilot their own advanced jet fighter vehicle, known as the Jackal, in free-flying aerial battles both on Earth and in space.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to work with the talented teams at Activision and Infinity Ward to ensure PlayStation continues to be the best place to play Call of Duty. We saw an incredible response to Infinite Warfare’s multiplayer beta last month, not to mention our 30-day early campaign access for Modern Warfare Remastered,” said Phil Rosenberg, SVP of Global Partner Development and Relations, Sony Interactive Entertainment America. “Today is the day PlayStation fans have been eagerly waiting for: Infinite Warfare, the return of a classic with Modern Warfare Remastered and the all-new PlayStation VR experience with Jackal Assault.”

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare multiplayer allows gamers to customise their play like never before, giving players more ways to optimise their weapons and gear to their style of play. Infinite Warfare introduces the most advanced tools of war: combat rigs, high-tech equipment, and unique prototype weapons. It’s an incredibly deep experience where everything – including weapons, gear, lethals and tacticals – has been built around different types of play styles, and where fans have the power to combine them however they want. The mode features unparalleled customisation, combined with the fluid, momentum-based movement system of Call of Duty®: Black Ops III evolved to custom-fit the new combat, to create a frenetic gameplay experience where every second counts.

The multiplayer mode also introduces more ways than ever to earn rewards and upgrade weapons. For the first time in Call of Duty, the game features an all-new crafting system that allows fans to use Salvage, an in-game currency earned during play, to create Prototype weapons that come with special cosmetic and functional benefits called “Gun Perks.” Additionally, players can level up and acquire specific weapons through Mission Teams. Fans can join four distinct Mission Teams, each with its own personality, challenges and team commander, to earn exclusive rewards unique to that team.

In addition, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare debuts an all-new cooperative mode called ‘Zombies in Spaceland.’ The mode transports players into an original, action-packed storyline where they’ll fight as one of four classic ‘80s archetypes to battle the living dead in a space-themed amusement park full of deadly zombies, fun attractions and much more. The mode can be played solo or with up to three other players, and is easy for new fans to jump in right away.

Zombies in Spaceland features an all-star cast, starting with the evil villain of the story named Willard Wyler. Wyler is portrayed with voice and likeness by Paul Reubens (Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, Gotham). Unbeknownst to the actors auditioning for Wyler, they will be transformed into characters on screen and sent straight into Wyler’s film. The playable characters are voiced by Seth Green (Robot Chicken, Austin Powers) as “the nerd;” Ike Barinholtz (Neighbors, Suicide Squad) as “the jock;” Jay Pharoah (Saturday Night Live, Ride Along) as “the rapper;” and Sasheer Zamata (Saturday Night Live, Inside Amy Schumer) as “the valley girl.” Players will also encounter an enigmatic DJ in the theme park, portrayed with voice and likeness by David Hasselhoff (Knight Rider, Baywatch), who will be an invaluable resource as they try to get out of this horror movie alive.

Also available is the Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Season Pass, which can be purchased on its own or obtained as part of the Legacy Pro and Digital Deluxe editions of the game. Season Pass gives discounted access to four Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare DLC Map Packs released during 2017 that take innovative multiplayer mechanics to a variety of all-new, sensational environments. The DLC Map Packs will be available first on the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, and availability and release dates may vary by platform. Season Pass owners will also get four new terrifying zombie adventures featuring quirky environments and fearsome enemies. Additionally, as a special offer, Season Pass owners will receive 10 Rare Supply Drops and 1,000 bonus Salvage that fans can use to craft new Prototype weapons in multiplayer.

Additionally, available today to PlayStation®VR fans, at no cost, is the all-new Call of Duty PlayStation®VR experience “Jackal Assault,” which immerses fans in the cockpit and puts them in control of a Jackal, the personal fighter jet in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

Today’s release of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare also marks the kick-off of a new season of the Call of Duty: World League, with the first competition taking place at MLG Las Vegas December 16-18.  Teams from all over the United States will compete for their chance to take home the first event title of the new CWL season and the winner’s share of the $100,000 prize pool. The competition will be shown around the world via in-game on the Live Event Viewer (Infinite Warfare PS4) and MLG.TV, www.twitch.tv/callofduty and www.youtube.com/callofduty, as well as other distribution channels which will be announced soon.
