Dragon Ball Super & Kai Buu Saga Dub Release Dates Announced

This is the final step in the beginning of the worldwide Dragon Ball resurgence. The dub of not only Dragon Ball Super, but the very long awaited, rumoured to have been ready for a long time dub of the Dragon Ball Kai Buu Saga are officially coming to US television every Saturday beginning January 7th.

Taken straight from the Funimation press release:

“Dragon Ball fans everywhere just received the biggest gift of the holiday season. Toei Animation Inc., Funimation© Entertainment and Adult Swim are pleased to announce their partnership to bring “Dragon Ball Super” to TV audiences starting next January. “Dragon Ball Super” is the first new storyline in more than 18 years from original creator Akira Toriyama and the Dragon Ball franchise, which was first introduced to the U.S. more than 20 years ago. Adult Swim will begin airing the U.S. English dub of “Dragon Ball Super” Season 1 during the Toonami block starting on January 7, 2017 at 8 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. ET. Season 1, which totals 26 episodes, encompasses the Battle of Gods and Resurrection ‘F’ story arcs. New episodes of “Dragon Ball Super” will air each Saturday.”

A new preview of a dubbed scene featuring Beerus and Whis was also released today. You can watch it above. Those that were paying attention may have noticed that there are two airing times. This could be to accommodate for both a censored version (e.g. using Hercule instead of Mr. Satan, perhaps less blood) and an uncensored version to run on Television. However it is important to say the press release does not make this clear and that the dual time slots may only exist for the premiere episode. Check out our recent article on the Dragon Ball Super Dub for a full cast list for the Battle of Gods saga. Announcements for releases in other countries have not yet been made. EDIT: It has been confirmed by Demarco (the person who runs Toonami) that both slots will be unedited as there is no need to edit the content for the Adult Swim audience. He also confirmed both time slots will stay for the duration of the first seasons run.

While that is huge news, perhaps even bigger news is that Dragon Ball Kai: The Final Chapters finally has a release date. This comes after years of rumours that the finished product has just been sitting in storage waiting for the right time to release. Dragon Ball Kai: The Final Chapters will begin airing at midnight on January 7, the same day as Dragon Ball Super. The ‘improved re-edit’ of the series began airing in Japan in 2009, so it has been quite a wait to get these final episodes for an International release. The Final Chapters will run for 69 episodes, 37 episodes less than the original Buu Saga that aired in Dragon Ball Z if you count from the very end of the Cell Saga. I expect the Other World tournament arc to be cut alongside a lot of the Great Saiyaman material.

A full cast list has also been released via the official website, with no major changes from the original Z run of the Buu Saga, apart from roles that were recast for Dragon Ball Kai. For example. this means Android 18 will be voiced by Colleen Clinkenbeard here in Kai, despite taking back the role in the recent films and the Super dub. Notably Laura Bailey reprises the role of Kid Trunks in Dragon Ball Kai but is not returning in Dragon Ball Super. Her replacement in Dragon Ball Super, Alexis Tipton, is taking on the minor role of Erasa in Dragon Ball Kai.

Believe it or not there is still more Dragon Ball related news. With the recent release of volume 2 of the Dragon Ball Super manga in Japan, a new interview from the manga artist Toyotaro gives us a good idea of how much involvement series creator Akira Toriyama has with the story of the new series. Toyotaro will draw a rough draft based on the basic text outline he is given. He will then send that drawing to his editor who then gets Toriyama to check it. Toriyama will sometimes send back edited pictures he draws himself.

dbs_vol2_designs

For example in the image above, the top left image is Toyotaro’s first draft. Notice the planet is smaller but roughly the size of the other Super Dragon Ball’s. Toriyama then corrects the image, making the planet larger and adding some dialogue. Toyotaro then draws and shades the image nicely to give us the final product on the bottom right.

Toyotaro also spoils that the end of the Trunks arc will be different in the manga version and lets us know that new characters to Super such as Beerus and Whis are the hardest to draw because there is a lack of reference art. Big credit to fan website Kanzenshuu for the scan of the image and translations.

Lastly, Europe and Australia finally have an official release date for Dragon Ball Fusions instead of just February 2017. The 17th of February is the day those outside of America and Japan will finally be able to fuse their favourite warriors on the Nintendo 3DS. For more information on that game check out all of our detailed past coverage.

Iceberg Introduces Two New Playable Factions to Stars in Shadow in Steam Early Access for PC

‘Stargate’ Update – Now Live on Steam

Haarlem, The Netherlands – December 7, 2016 – With a steady stream of updates and patches in the past weeks, developer Ashdar Games and publisher Iceberg Interactive is now introducing two new factions in today’s major update to Steam’s Early Access release of Stars in Shadow, named ‘Stargate’. The turn-based 4x strategy space PC title started strongly back in September of this year, resulting in a positive user rating of 92%.

Both the new Phidi Combine faction as well as the Ashdar Imperials faction are now playable by all owners of Stars in Shadow. The Phidi Combine faction unlocks the special Mercenary Exchange, which allows the Phidi faction to hire mercenaries from any of the major races. The Ashdar Imperials faction comes with their own ancient Stargate, which acts as a one-way portal to any star system; but beware, send them too far and they cannot return.

For a complete overview of the Stargate update with all of its additions, improvements and fixes, please visit the official Steam Hub here.

Sven Olsen, lead developer of Ashdar Games says, “We’d like to thank all our Early Access participants for their support and helpful feedback and suggestions. The game has come a long way in the last few months, and the Early Access community has been an important part of that progress.”

Publisher Iceberg Interactive is expecting to launch Stars in Shadow in January 2017 on Steam and various other digital download platforms. The game can already be purchased in Steam’s Early Access program at $24.99 for PC. For more information, please visit the official Steam page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/464880/

Some of the highlighting features for the Early Access game include:

  • Epic Scope:
Starting at the dawn of interstellar travel, progress through four eras of technological advancement. Discover the science of planetary terraforming, upgrade your infantry battalions to battle mechs, and grow your fleet from a squadron of destroyers to an armada of planet-destroying Dread Stars
  • Varied Factions:
Seven Playable factions comprising six alien races. Each faction has different research strengths and technology options. Forming alliances, conquering neighboring species, or discovering ancient artifacts may open up additional avenues of research. Choose your race wisely as it impacts which worlds will suit you, what trades or alliances may be offered, and whether your neighbors are inclined to trust you
  • Stylized Setting:
A distinctive comic-book art style and an original, detailed universe backstory draw you into an immersive game world. Interact with a unique cast of alien characters, make friends and influence people, or crush your enemies and see them driven before you
  • Focused High-Level Strategy:
Build a vast and varied empire, taking advantage of the unique traits offered by different alien populations and the worlds they inhabit. A streamlined resource and planetary improvement model keeps the game moving even when your empire grows large
  • Deep Turn-Based Tactical Combat:
Face off against your opponents in complex 2D turn-based tactical battles. Counter your enemy’s missile barrage using point defense or interceptors, then close to energy weapon range! Stars in Shadow’s tactical engine includes several features rarely seen in turn based games. Multi-ship commands keep even large fleet battles fast-paced, and smart unit behaviors allow tight control with minimal micromanagement. Auto-resolve battles that are a foregone conclusion, while retaining the ability to replay any engagement to see exactly what happened

NEW HERO DOZER CHARGES INTO PLANET OF HEROES

NEW HERO DOZER CHARGES INTO PLANET OF HEROES

The Next Round of Testing for the most Mobile-optimized MOBA Game Has Begun

Moscow, Russia – December 7, 2016 – Developer Fast Forward Studios and global publisher My.com continue to reshape the definition of true mobile MOBA gaming with a new public test phase for Planet of Heroes. By reducing average game sessions to seven minutes, Fast Forward has succeeded to optimize the MOBA experience for smartphone use. In this new test phase, the developers are focused on adding features that have been requested by the community. A new hero, a streamlined new player experience through elaborate tutorials, and a player versus environment story driven campaign are all new additions.

Planet of Heroes Screenshot.jpg

The new public test is currently live for iOS and Android devices. Fast Forward Studios invites players to be involved in the development of the best mobile MOBA experience! To get access to Planet of Heroes please click HERE: moba.my.com/

“We worked really hard to make Planet of Heroes the best mobile MOBA game out there and make it really comfortable to play it on your phone,” said Head of Fast Forward studios, Ivan Fedyanin. “We achieved it with seven minute long game sessions and really swift touchscreen controls. Now it’s time to give players more diversity in gameplay and that is what we aimed for in the update.”

New Additions to Planet of Heroes:

Dozer:
A new hero arrived onto the battlefield! A key component for fun gameplay is players being able to find the correct hero suitable for their playstyle. Dozer, a giant humanoid rhino, is capable of soaking up a lot of damage. He is an ideal pick for those who see tanking as their role on the battlefield. Dozer is not going to be a best damage dealer in his team, but his utility coming toe-to-toe with enemies is unmatched due to his crowd-control abilities and massive body which turns him into a living shield for the team.

New PvE campaign:
There are five new story-driven missions in the game right now so players can take rest from intense PvP battles in full-blown Action RPG mode. For those who need challenges, there is a more difficult mode with tougher enemies and greater rewards. Players are advised to play one mission numerous times – each try will be different, and the rewards will scale with the achievements.

Tutorial mode:
Massive Online Battle Arenas are not easy to master. Luckily Fast Forward Studios recruited the help of the best MOBA game expertsto help build the best tutorial for new players. It takes a lot real game practice to become the best, but the tutorial will cover how basic things work in the game to feel confident in a live battle. It is not only about controls; this mode explains how to play different styles, use runes to the player’s advantage, and fight bosses.

Planet of Heroes is an action-packed modern MOBA for mobile devices that aims to capture the essence of what makes the genre great on PC, while playing to the strengths of mobile platforms. Planet of Heroes makes the most of the mobile experience, allowing for both simultaneous head-to-head online play, and asynchronous offline play. Game controls are tailored to make the most of mobile devices, eschewing awkward gestures and control layouts in favor of friendly, easy-to-grasp control schemes.

Voodoo Impressions

voodoo-promo-shot-01

Brain in the Box’s open world survival game Voodoo is on Kickstarter right now looking to raise €30,000 to finish development on the game. Voodoo is set in a fictional version of the African Savannah, where giant Izimus wander the world. I had the chance to test on an early alpha build of the game to see what the game is all about.

The preview build is a little sparse right now. It contains two small oases to explore and the Izimu Atlas to defeat. The build also includes several weapons to try, though only the bow is needed to defeat Izimu. The pre-alpha build came with an axe, sword, spear, a one handed war club, and a two handed war club. The melee system is a mobile, but a bit slow. It appears that proper timing and strategic use of attack, dodge, and block will be the key to victory. The bow needs to be pulled drawn back and the projectile fires a bit on the slow side, so players will need to compensate for gravity and travel time when making their shots.

Fighting the Izimus is a pretty epic experience. Part of the fun is figuring out what the Izimu’s weak point is to open it up for damage. For Atlas, players need to shoot arrows into its right knee until it falls to the ground then shoot the same targets that make up Atlas’ ears. I tested the game on my own and it took quite some time to take down Atlas alone. It is pretty obvious that the game was designed to be played in groups. There is something terrifying and awe inspiring about fighting Izimus. It’s not hard to feel small and very vulnerable when it is so easy to be crushed underfoot.

The audio-visual experience is sounding and looking good so far. There isn’t too much in the music department right now, but the fight music really feeds into the epic experience when battling the Izimus. The art style is inspired by African art, giving the game a unique look.

Voodoo is currently on Kickstarter until January 1st. The game is set to launch in March 2017 for PC.
