Nintendo Switch Becomes the Fastest-Selling Video Game System in Nintendo History

Nintendo Switch Becomes the Fastest-Selling Video Game System in Nintendo History

More Than 906,000 U.S. Units Sold in March; The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Game Also Sets Records

REDMOND, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Nintendo Switch, the new home gaming system that people can also take on the go, has sold faster in its launch month than any other video game system in Nintendo history. The Nintendo Switch system sold more than 906,000 units in March, according to the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. That makes Nintendo Switch one of the fastest-selling video game systems of all time. Notably, this sales surge was accomplished in a nontraditional month for a console launch.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild game sold over 1.3 million units*. That total includes more than 925,000 units sold for Nintendo Switch and nearly 460,000 units sold for the Wii U console. That means that Nintendo sold more of this game for Nintendo Switch than it sold Nintendo Switch systems, for an attach rate of more than 100 percent. This may be attributed to people who purchased both a limited edition of the game to collect and a second version to play.

This was all enough to make The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild the fastest-selling Nintendo launch game of all time, as well as the fastest-selling game ever in The Legend of Zelda series.

“Nintendo always strives to offer consumers something fun, new and different,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO. “With its various play modes and the innovative features of the Joy-Con controllers, Nintendo Switch provides unique experiences that people can take with them anywhere and share with anyone.”

While Nintendo Switch sales are off to a record-breaking start, shipments have not yet been able to keep up with such high demand. Nintendo is working to make sure everyone who wants a system is able to buy one, and more systems are continually being shipped. In just over two weeks, the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe game will launch for Nintendo Switch on April 28 with more content than any other Mario Kart game in series history, including 48 racing tracks, new Battle modes, new characters and other additions. Competition on Nintendo Switch gets even hotter heading into summer, with the release of the ARMS game on June 16 and the Splatoon 2 game on July 21.

A full accounting of worldwide Nintendo Switch sales, as well as other financial information, will be provided on April 27, when Nintendo issues its fiscal-year earnings release. For more information, keep an eye on Nintendo’s investor relations page at https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en.

*Data regarding physical sales of games are from the NPD Group. Data regarding digital downloads of games and combined physical/digital life-to-date numbers are from Nintendo’s internal sales figures. All numbers, unless otherwise stated, are specific to the United States only.

Project Highrise: Las Vegas Review

Project Highrise: Las Vegas

Developer: SomaSim
Publisher: Kasedo Games
Platform: Mac, Windows (Reviewed)
Release Date: 13 April 2017
Price: $6.99 USD – Available Here

Video Review

Overview

SomaSim is expanding the scope of Project Highrise, their spiritual successor to Sim Tower, with the new Las Vegas expansion. A stylistic homage to the days of the Rat Pack, the new expansion introduces the ability to build hotels. Players can now turn their towers into an attraction that draws visitors from far and wide by inviting musicians, hosting business events, and enticing gamblers to the casino.

Story

As with the base game, Project Highrise: Las Vegas does not have much in the way of a plot. There are some new scenarios that have a few sentences that give some background to the scenarios, but that is about it. In general, the writing in the new expansion is clear and polished.

Gameplay

Project Highrise: Las Vegas adds an entirely new option to tower builders. Hotel guests are a special type of visitor to the tower that will stay overnight in a hotel room and enjoy the building. Like residential and business tenants, hotel guests require their own set of amenities to keep them happy. House keeping will need to be hired to clean the rooms after guests leave and larger, fancier rooms will require more amenities like luggage service. Guests will demand the latest and greatest in comfort, so the expansion adds the new HVAC utility. Filling rooms takes a little more than a few good reviews. Tower owners will need to build conference rooms and concert halls so they can book business conferences and musicians to bring in paying guests who are willing to pay a little extra to attend the event on top of the hotel stay. Of course, it isn’t Vegas without the addition of a few casinos. With the help of the new tourism consultants, tower owners will be able to snag a license to build casinos and attract gamblers.

The addition of hotels smooths out the gameplay in Project Highrise. The change is subtle enough. Rent is normally paid out every night at midnight. Hotel rooms on the other hand pay out when the guests check out during the day, giving players a much-needed mid-day cash boost. I found having hotels had a significant effect on the flow of the game. Before, I would often find myself making changes to the tower right after rent came in, then spend several minutes waiting for the day to pass so more funds would be made available. With having some hotel rooms in my tower, I found myself dealing with much shorter stretches of time where I stared at the clock waiting for enough money to start building again.

The new content is integrated well into the game. The new buttons take up previously empty space on the UI. Most of the data is displayed independently of the base game, which is a good choice as hotel guest information tends to need extra attention. The expansion comes with several new scenarios, but they are a little hard to identify as they are tucked into the bottom of the scenario list without any indication they are Las Vegas scenarios. A small icon would have helped identify the new scenarios.

I really like the new content added in the expansion. While the new additions share basic concepts, the Las Vegas content behaves rather differently than the content from the base game. Hotel guests are a special visitor type of their own, and their opinions feel like they have greater short term consequence over tenants. Having booked talents require special accommodation and provide reviews with greater impact than the average visitor was an excellent touch that screams the glitz and glamour of Vegas. The tight relationship between the rooms added in the Las Vegas expansion can be a bit tough at times to squeeze in other rooms, but in the end, the content makes Project Highrise feel like a more complete game.

Visuals

The new additions fit in nicely with the base game. The Las Vegas content is a little more vivid than the heavy earth tones of Project Highrise, opting for some more vibrant shades of red and flat blacks. Yet the artists still managed to choose shades that blend in well with the 80s tones from the base content. The overall style definitely channels a little 60s Vegas flair with the incandescent bulb marquees and the over the top glamorous style.

Audio

Project Highrise: Las Vegas delivers a solid audio experience, albeit a small one. The new sound effects are excellent and fit into the Las Vegas theme quite well. The new menu music is an excellent remix of the old song that is a bit more upbeat. I do wish, however, that the expansion came with a few more new songs to listen to, as the extra variety would make long marathons more enjoyable.

Overall

Project Highrise: Las Vegas is an excellent example of what a proper video game expansion looks like. It takes an already solid game and improves upon it. The expansion adds some meaningful new content and melds it in beautifully with the old content. The best part about the Las Vegas expansion is how it smooths out the gameplay experience with the simple addition of a new time slot for income. If you already own Project Highrise or you plan on buying it, do yourself a favour and grab Las Vegas too.

JACKBOX GAMES LAUNCHES THE JACKBOX PARTY PACK 3 ON NINTENDO SWITCH™

YOU DON’T KNOW JACK® Studio Debuts on New Console with Critically Acclaimed Five-game Bundle

CHICAGO April 13, 2017 – Jackbox Games, the independent developer of hilarious party games like Drawful, Fibbage, Quiplash and YOU DON’T KNOW JACK®, has released The Jackbox Party Pack 3 on Nintendo Switch™, marking the series’ first appearance on a Nintendo console. This latest collection of five multiplayer games uses phones or tablets as controllers. By entering a room code at Jackbox.tv, players anywhere in the world can join the fun, and with Audience Mode, up to 10,000 additional players can help affect the outcome of the game. And for the first time on consoles, the game can be played on the go utilizing the Nintendo Switch’s portability*.

The Jackbox Party Pack 3 features five uproarious games:

  • Quiplash 2 is a bigger, better version of the original, with more say-anything prompts and a new final round, The Last Lash. Users can also write their own custom prompts, making it infinitely replayable.
  • Trivia Murder Party challenges up to eight contestants to test their knowledge while being held captive by a hilariously unstable serial killer.
  • Guesspionage is a game of percentages that asks up to eight players to guess the public’s answers to thought-provoking questions.
  • Tee K.O. combines your artistic side with witty wordplay by turning drawings and slogans from up to eight players into hysterical T-shirts. And if you like a design, you can even buy it on a real shirt!
  • Fakin’ It tasks up to six players with secret, ridiculous instructions, with the exception of one clueless player who must lie and cheat to avoid being discovered as “The Faker.”

The collection also includes improved audience and streaming features, like the ability to censor unwanted answers from unruly players in real time, and a Family Friendly Filter for managing the sometimes-edgy content of Guesspionage, Fakin’ It and Quiplash 2.

The Jackbox Party Pack 3 is available today as a digital title on the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch for $24.99 and is rated T (Teen) by the ESRB. For the latest from Jackbox Games, please visit www.jackboxgames.com, and follow the studio on Facebook, Twitter and Twitch.

*Nintendo Switch will need to be connected to the internet to play The Jackbox Party Pack 3. The game’s bandwidth requirements are small, so players won’t need to worry about their phone data usage skyrocketing.

About Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star

Developed by Marvelous Inc. and expanding upon the extensive Fate universe with an original story from acclaimed series writer Kinoko Nasu (of Fate/stay night fame), Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star features a diverse cast of 16 playable “Servants” – ancient warriors of legend and imagination, always at the beck and call of their Masters – who survived the Holy Grail War that took place on the Moon. In a future watched over by the all-powerful lunar super computer, “Moon Cell Automaton,” these champions now battle for dominance over this digital realm, known as “SE.RA.PH.” This story takes place after the events described in Fate/EXTRA, and depicts the world as it appears following that previous Holy Grail War.

Players will experience the story of Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star from the independent perspectives of the three factions wrestling for control over SE.RA.PH. and face off against foes from a variety of Fate productions, including characters from Fate/EXTRA, Fate/stay night, Fate/Zero, Fate/Apocrypha and Fate/Grand Order, in fast-paced combat. A new form change battle mechanic called Moon Crux debuts in this entry to match its series-first gameplay style, transforming the player-controlled Servants and granting them considerable powers that allow them to devastate enemies and take formidable challenges head-on. The game will contain the original Japanese voices, with the Nintendo Switch version featuring game text in English, Japanese, Chinese (Traditional), and Korean.

Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star is developed by Marvelous Inc. and is published in North America by XSEED Games. In addition to standard retail and digital formats for the Nintendo Switch version, the game is available on the PlayStation®4 and “PSVita” systems in a limited Noble Phantasm Edition bundle, which contains a 7.5” by 6.3” hardcover art book featuring over 100 pages of high-quality artwork and backstory from the Fate/EXTELLA universe, a pack of sixteen collectible 3” by 5” cards depicting each of the game’s Servants, and a 24” by 17” cloth poster, all housed in a custom collectible box. The PlayStation®4 and “PSVita” system versions of this title have been rated “T for Teen” by the ESRB, while the Nintendo Switch version has not yet been rated. Further details will be revealed in the coming months.

Adventure Time: Islands Review

Adventure Time: Islands

Studio: Frederator Studios
Publisher: Madman Entertainment
Platform: DVD (reviewed)
Release Date: April 5, 2017
Price: $19.95 – Available Here

Overview

Finn and Susan Strong decide to cross the ocean to visit a small island far away from Ooo. This island may hold the answers to Finn’s past and the key to unlocking Susan’s memories, and it may even feature human inhabitants. They are joined by Jake, as well as BMO, who stows away in Princess Bubblegum’s boat. After overcoming many challenges, they eventually find the place on the map, but discover that it is actually a small group of mysterious islands containing many mysterious people.

Story

Little has been revealed about Susan Strong prior to now. The same goes for the history of the human race in the dystopian world of Adventure Time. It was initially assumed that Finn was the only living human in the world, but after coming into an unexpected and violent contact with a sentient spaceship looking for Susan, questions start being raised about this. Whether or not Susan is a human has previously been left ambiguous, but she clearly has some connection to the humans. The subtitle of this miniseries, Islands, does not itself suggest how important this story arc is for Finn, Susan and the history of the world. The islands that Finn, Jake, Susan and BMO find are far more significant than the vast majority of locations in Ooo. The journey to the faraway islands is as crazy and entertaining as any regular episode of the series is, but for Finn, arriving at his destination will take him one step closer to learning more about himself and where he came from. Defeating monsters and escaping from other perilous situations are secondary to the plot in this story, and this strong focus on exploring the world and its humans allows it to be one of the most meaningful parts of the series overall. It is always great seeing BMO have fun, and Jake is one of the best animal sidekicks in any western series ever, but it is demonstrated very effectively that Finn can carry episodes by himself. Susan is also very capable of carrying her own episode. This has all been demonstrated before on rare occasions, but this serious and engaging focus on developing Adventure Time‘s characters allows it to stand out in a way similar to Steven Universe. Susan has a lot forgotten emotions and memories buried deep inside her, and seeing her remember her childhood is one of the emotional high points of Islands.

Even with an unusually limited amount of screentime, Jake and BMO are still able to make this as hilarious as it is engaging. There are many memorable one-liners in these eight episodes, which is an impressive feat even considering how great the writers have been at coming up with jokes. Quoting the best of them would spoil the final episode, but their inclusion grounds Islands in the Adventure Time universe in the best possible way. These jokes make it impossible to forget about Jake and BMO while watching Finn and Susan learn about their connected pasts.

Visuals

One element that helps make this whole series engaging and entertaining, this miniseries included, is the brilliantly wacky and fluid visuals. The animation consistently helps bring this bizarre world to life, and new, crazy situations help to keep it fresh and interesting. One episode is spent parodying virtual reality and online gaming subculture, with the VR system that BMO gets hooked on being given the amusing name of ‘Better Reality’. Spending an episode in a massive multiplayer VR game in which BMO is the moderator allows for some creative visuals that demonstrate just how well the ideas that the creative team comes up with transfer from paper to the screen. This miniseries presents as much of a sci-fi story as it does a dystopian fantasy, and it expands on the world in a way most fitting of Adventure Time. It looks and feels like one fun and exciting adventure. It also presents a unique opening animation sequence that focuses only on the characters shown in these eight episodes.

Audio

An alternative version of the opening song was recorded and used for these episodes, and it sounds great despite its simplicity. There is also some unusually good background music present, but that is not what stands out most about the audio. Musical silence can be an effective way at allowing viewers to focus solely on the dialogue in a scene or at enhancing dramatic tension, yet it is an uncommon technique in Cartoon Network’s productions. Considering how crazy Adventure Time normally is, it makes sense that the producers would want music playing frequently. With this new focus on story, however, the lack of music here draws attention to the things that really matter. The voice actors are now more important than before too, and fortunately, each of the guest actors deliver great performances as some of the new characters introduced on the islands.

Extras

This release contains four sets of extras: song demos, episode animatics, art galleries and a short video titled “Board Pitch”. The art galleries include: backgrounds, concept art and model designs. The “Board Pitch” video is basically just someone outlining episode three to the production team, but it and the other extras are interesting and may be of interest to dedicated fans of the show.

Overall

There have been some excellent episodes of Adventure Time prior to now, including many devoted to the backstories of many characters and their relationships with various people. The Stakes! miniseries set the precedent for a full story arc aimed at long-time fans of the series, and it has now been proven once again that Adventure Time has always had the potential to become more engaging and meaningful than most American animated series. Finn may no longer be the only human character in the world, but he remains to be one of the most relatable characters in the entire series. This miniseries makes his relationships and adventures in Ooo seem more important than ever before, all in the emotional way that has become characteristic of Adventure Time when it is at its best. Whether you simply like this series or love it and want to learn more about Finn’s past, Susan’s past and the history of the world and its human inhabitants, these eight episodes present one of the best stories featured in the hundreds of episodes that have been produced so far.
