Stars Reach Launches Into Early Access, Bringing Ultima Online Veteran Raph Koster’s Vision of a Sandbox MMORPG to Life

Terraform worlds, build civilizations, and shape the future of a persistent galaxy in this MMO, out today on PC via Steam

San Marcos, CA – August 18, 2026 Today, the sandbox sci-fi MMORPG, Stars Reach, developed by Playable Worlds and led by Ultima Online lead designer and Star Wars Galaxies creative director Raph Koster, launches into Early Access on Steam.

Imagine a galaxy where every cubic meter can be terraformed, populated, and ultimately transformed. Build trade empires, tame wild fauna, and create a functioning government for an entire planet. This is the vision behind Stars Reach, a new sandbox MMORPG where players can carve rivers, melt stone into lava, harness ecological disasters, or burn entire planets to ash. In a universe shaped by the permanence of players’ actions, ecosystems evolve, wildlife goes extinct, and player-built communities rise and fall. Early Access welcomes players to come in early and help shape what the game becomes.

Harkening back to the golden age of MMOs that centered around ultimate freedom, Stars Reach asks players to forge their own path through a classless, open-ended progression system with hundreds of skills and through a galaxy that encourages creative experimentation. Across a vast simulated universe, players explore new planets, build homes and settlements, gather resources, craft, trade, fight, govern, and leave a lasting mark on the worlds they discover. Across land and space, players battle hostile enemies and defend their homesteads.

Playable Worlds’ cloud-native technology makes this kind of reactive online world possible. In Stars Reach, trees grow from saplings, lakes freeze, and caves either collapse naturally or by a player’s hand, rendering previously accessible areas now blocked. With environments capable of changing at a moment’s notice, players must think creatively, adapt to the unexpected, or devise an entirely new approach.

Led by co-founders Raph Koster and Eric Goldberg, Playable Worlds has been hard at work bringing new systems and features to the experience of Stars Reach. Prior to the Early Access launch, a number of substantial updates went live, including an improved character creator with enhanced customization options, combat refinements, and enhanced wildlife migration with increasing threat levels if left unchecked.

This version includes exploration across multiple planets, resource gathering and harvesting, exciting combat, an in-depth crafting system, trading between players, and more. It also introduces a unique threat: a planet-eating hive mind that players must cooperatively defend against. More features will be progressively added, including spaceships, additional species, factions, political structures, and PvP combat.

Stars Reach is out now in Early Access on PC via Steam with three paid tiers: the Firstlight Pack ($29.99), the Voyager Pack ($49.99), and the Cosmonaut Pack ($79.99), each offering increasing rewards and cosmetics.

About Playable Worlds

Playable Worlds, Inc. is a game studio building vast, living online worlds where players connect, explore, and make their mark. Founded in 2018 by online gaming veterans Raph Koster and Eric Goldberg, the San Marcos, CA-based studio combines proprietary cloud-native technology with deep expertise in game design, community building, and live service operations.

From the Creator of the Lauded Dread Delusion Comes Dark Fantasy RPG Entropy – Available Today On Steam

Inspired in part by Gatwick Airport comes a grim metaphorical tale with retro modern low-poly graphics and combat o’plenty

Draenog (Aug. 18, 2026) – The creators behind the hit dark indie Dread Delusion are back with their next game, a dark fantasy RPG set in a bleak world where hope is almost entirely lost, Entropy ($11.99, https://store.steampowered.com/app/3940340/Entropy/).

Get up close with this low-poly beauty in today’s Early Access trailer:

Explorable towns filled with colorful characters and a tactical turn-based battle system await players today when they dive into the barren moor of Draenog. Heavily inspired by classic JRPGs, Entropy tells the tale of a land where only pockets of humanity remain. There was no pivotal apocalyptic event to speak of; only the cruel march of time and the inexplicable infertility of the world, which comes to life via the game’s conscious artistic approach to recreate PSX-level graphics from past gaming eras.

Accursed creatures stalk the defoliated lands between settlements, which are themselves terrible places; squalid, medieval and mostly ruled by tyrants.

Putting players in the role of party leader, it’s up to you to determine who joins your party of up to six – there are plenty willing to work, but choosing who is most fit for your battles may mean the difference between success and failure.  Target enemy limbs via the game’s engrossing combat scenarios and weaken your foes by severing limbs. Remember: you can still run for your life if you have two legs and no arms.

Use your hard-won treasures to replace fallen hired mercenaries – in Draenog, most are expendable – or level up to increase stats and unlock new perks. Entropy is available today on Steam for $11.99.

Be the Hero Earth Needs: Immersive Disco-Punk Space Horror Retrospace Releases October 1

Leamington Spa, UK – August 18, 2026: UK publisher Kwalee and independent studio The Wild Gentlemen are pleased to announce that RetroSpace is coming to PC and consoles this October. The game will launch on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 on October 1, 2026.

RetroSpace is a disco-punk space horror where you can be a sneaky chap or a mutant action hero as you try to survive on a space station swallowed by a black hole. A mind-bending ride with weird creatures, immersive features, time jumps, and ’70s mustaches!

Kwalee and The Wild Gentlemen have also released an all-new gameplay trailer, giving players a closer look at RetroSpace and revealing its October 1 release date.

About RetroSpace

RetroSpace is a love letter to the immersive games of yesteryear, with a modern sensibility and some unique, genre-bending twists.

IMMERSIVE DISCO-PUNK SPACE-HORROR!

You were but a simple janitor, now you are the last hope of all humanity! A space station has been swallowed by a sentient black hole, weird animal and plant hybrids roam the corridors, and even time itself has gone completely mad around you. Navigate with stealth or unleash a blast-tastic odyssey through the cursed station. Will you be the hero Earth needs, or are you groovin’ to save your own soul? The choice is yours!

SURVIVING AURORA 5

The enemies on the station of Aurora 5 are completely different from each other, so you’ve gotta channel your inner mad scientist to outsmart ’em. Survival ain’t just luck; it’s about cracking the code on their behavior, special abilities, and weaknesses. You will also have to deal with a variety of environmental factors. Security systems – for example – can be extremely deadly unless you find a way and turn them into traps or even unlikely allies…

STEALTH VS ACTION

Don’t like conflicts? Would you rather hide in the dark or find a way around your enemy? Or are you the kind who goes completely mental and attacks your opponent with its own flaming body part? The choice is yours, janitor! RetroSpace allows you to solve situations in many different ways. Total avoidance is as legit as a diversion, trap setting, or full-on “balls-to-the-wall” action.

THE STATION

Aurora 5 is a massively interconnected and open station that you are free to explore. As you discover new and new areas, shortcuts, and secret paths will open up to previously visited locations. This can be accessed through a (mostly) peaceful central HUB area, where you can return anytime when you can’t take the madness and horror any longer.

MUTAMODS, DEATH, AND REBIRTH

Mutamods™ can make your life much easier and enhance your combat and stealth skills. Want to become a tentacle-armed, mind-controlling, shadow-lurking mutant madman? Be our guest. BUT BEARE! Mutamods™ may have unexpected and irreversible side effects…

Death will be integral to your journey, but don’t worry! Aurora can produce an infinite number of clones of you. But here’s the hitch – cloning ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. You should be prepared for some severe cloning degenerations, and of course, it is highly recommended to get your stuff back from your former self. (and always carry a mustache! – thank us later) Get ready for a wild ride through the psychedelic unknown, where every death is just another funky twist in your interstellar journey!

KEY FEATURES

  • Narrative-heavy, humorous, and dark story – aka “disco-fever space-satire” with a surprising amount of depth and twists.
  • Immersive sim elements – choose how to solve problems and deal with obstacles. Take advantage of light and shadow, lure enemies into traps, hack turrets, and security stations, find hidden routes, and create diversions.
  • Mutations (Mutamods™) are at your disposal to enhance your average stealth-shooter experience with juicy superpowers. BEWARE: With great power comes great responsibility (and unexpected side effects).
  • Modernized retro feel with low poly aesthetics, infused with the 60s and 70s retro-futuristic setting and atmosphere.
  • Metroidvania-like, interconnected level design, and a meaningful death/rebirth system with a unique twist.

About The Wild Gentlemen

The Wild Gentlemen was formed in 2018 by three friends with the aim of creating a truly unique, creative and ambitious new indie development team.

They’re now a team of 23 professional veterans and talented newcomers, whose first game – Chicken Police – Paint it RED! – was a huge critical success. The team creates in a variety of genres and moods, but their priority is always to produce games of artistic merit and the highest possible quality.

The team is currently working on several projects, the highly anticipated sequel – Chicken Police: Into the HIVE!, Moses & Plato – Last Train to Clawville, and RetroSpace.
