Video Review

Overview

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is set centuries after the events of Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. The new game stars the recently deposed King Evan Pettiwhisker Tildrum who is on a coming of age quest to bring peace to the world. Filled with youthful optimism, King Evan will build his new kingdom with the help of new friends from far and wide.

Story

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom kicks off with a violent coup at Ding Dong Dell that sends King Evan fleeing into the countryside. Now homeless, young Evan chooses to grieve the loss of his family by building a new kingdom founded on everlasting peace. Although his unlikely quest soon finds success, a new threat is emerging from the shadows that will only be stopped by a united front led by Evan.

Like many animated children films, Ni no Kuni II plot is unrealistic and a bit straight forward. Most villains are never truly evil, but only good people who have lost their way. Evan himself is so sweet and naïve that he can give anyone a cavity. Yet Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is a refreshing change. Game plots have matured along with the generation of gamers who grew up playing video games. Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom bucks the trend with Disney-like storytelling that will warm the heart. Even the most challenging of themes like death are handled with a light touch and a hopeful, positive message. Although the violence in the game may be a bit much for young kids, the Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom will make gamers feel young again.

Gameplay

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is an action RPG at its core. Players choose three characters and four Higgledies to take into combat. Although players control one character at a time, players can cycle between all three in the course of combat. Each character can equip three melee weapons and one ranged weapon. Melee weapons can chain combo attacks using a mix of light and heavy attacks. Mana regenerates with every melee strike and can be expended on spells or ranged attacks. Incoming damage is either completely negated by dodging out of the way or partially negated by blocking. As combat progresses, Higgledies can be activated to trigger a variety of special abilities.

Combat generally feels fluid and responsive for the most part. Dodging and attacking feel great, but the block mechanic is a bit too strict. A successful block requires players to react quite early in the telegraphed animation and for the character to be facing the incoming attack. As such, dodging tends to be more effective as it negates all damage and is more forgiving. The AI can’t be issued commands, but they generally perform well enough to be left to their own devices. Certain boss fights requiring dodging mechanics or specific targeting can sometimes be a little more than the AI can handle, but these fights tend to be rare enough to not cause an issue. The wide range of spells and character types means players can choose a playstyle they like then fill out their party with AI characters to cover their weaknesses. The mana regeneration system is goes a long way in giving the spells some meat, as players can use spells to their hearts content instead of hording skills for the dreaded boss fight. Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom also offers a tactics tweaker that lets players boost certain elements, stats, and enemy weaknesses. I found that the tweaks that gave flat boosts were more effective than those that favoured certain enemies or elements at the cost of penalties against others, as the latter often requires tweaking between zones.

Outside of combat is a large world to explore. The level design is solid, with plenty of areas off the beaten path filled with rewards for explorers. The game has plenty of side quests to complete. For the most part, there are enough side activities to keep players from having to grind monsters to hit the recommended level for the story missions. There is a short period between Hydropolis and Broadleaf where the side quests dried up a little, making it harder to keep the pace without a bit of a grind. Once that hump was passed, I found the game was back to its usual pacing.

The kingdom management side activity is similar to city sims found on mobile games. Players who put in the effort of tracking down every citizen for their kingdom will be given access to research that will provide new items and quality of life services. Luckily for those who are not interested, the kingdom management is mostly optional save for a few parts on the story mission.

The strategic battle mini-game is probably the weaker of the two mini-games. Players take four units into a rock-paper-scissors strategy game. The four units will encircle Evan, and players need to rotate the units around to ensure they battle an enemy unit that is at a disadvantage. Players have amount of resources to call in reinforcements and use special abilities, which adds another strategic layer to the game. While the mini-game itself is an entertaining distraction, players do need to do a little bit of grinding to keep the army leveled up for story missions. Finding these missions can be a bit of a pain and require some exploration. I think having all the battles accessible from the kingdom management menu would have been a better solution.

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom’s PC port is decent. While the controller is spot on, the mouse and keyboard controls are no slouch either. It’s refreshing to see a JRPG PC port that actually supports the mouse cursor, even if the actual application is a bit off due to the cursor having  a sticking effect on buttons. On the graphics side of things, Ni no Kuni II’s manages to offer much needed PC oriented options like borderless window mode, FPS caps, and plenty of visual settings.

Visuals

Unfortunately, Level-5 opted to not renew their partnership with the legendary Studio Ghibli for the Ni no Kuni sequel. However, they have done a fine job on their own. The art style is gorgeous. Each kingdom has a distinct look that leans heavily on real life inspirations. Coming upon a new kingdom is always a treat as taking my first steps in a new city never fails to fill me with awe and wonder. The chibi-style overworld screen is adorable and emphasizes the game’s light-hearted nature. Caves are the game’s one weak point, they all use the same set of assets.

Audio

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom’s audio experience is very good, but a little lacking in quantity. The sound effects are enjoyable.  The game is partially voice acted in Japanese and English, with major plot points and cutscenes having full voice acting. The rest of the game’s dialogue will have a few simple lines like “hello” or “hmm” for each character’s written dialogue. These filler lines to be a bit out of place, and I would have preferred full voice acting or none at all. The English voice acting is fantastic, with plenty of care paid to characters big and small. The soundtrack is excellent, but when songs are played need to be tweaked. There are some areas where the game constantly plays very tense, horror-style music normally used when an enemy is nearby. Some lower key music would be helpful for dialing down the tension in these areas.

Overall

It is not often I can say that a playing a video game is good for the soul, but Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is one of those games that always leaves me feeling happier after a gameplay session. It’s lighthearted, Disney-like atmosphere is a joy to experience. While there are some small issues that could use ironing out, the gameplay is well executed overall. The audio/visual experience is solid, though there are some areas that need a little more variety. But don’t let these small issues distract from the fact that Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is a much-needed breath of fresh air.

  • Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (“Ontario Teachers’”) and Tencent, enter Ubisoft’s share capital as long-term investors; as part of the transaction, Tencent and Ubisoft have also signed a strategic partnership agreement
  • Share buy-back by Ubisoft of shares owned by Vivendi, accretive to all Ubisoft shareholders
  • Acquisition by Guillemot Brothers SE of shares owned by Vivendi
  • Accelerated Bookbuilding with institutional investors for the remainder of Vivendi’s stake
  • All transactions are realized at the price of 66 euros per share
  • Continued roll-out of Ubisoft’s growth strategy, based on the company’s transformation to a more recurring and profitable business model
  • Ubisoft confirms its financial targets for 2017-18 and 2018-19

Sydney, Australia – March 21, 2018 – Today, Ubisoft announced that it has signed an agreement with Vivendi for its full exit from Ubisoft’s share capital, with the sale of all Vivendi’s 30,489,300 shares. The transaction includes an investment by two new long-term investors, the Relationship Investing arm of Ontario Teachers’ Public Equities division, and Tencent, a share buy-back by Ubisoft, an acquisition of shares by Guillemot Brothers SE and an Accelerated Bookbuilding with institutional investors. Following the implementation of the transaction, Vivendi will no longer hold any shares in Ubisoft, and has committed not to acquire any shares in Ubisoft for 5 years.

As part of the transaction, Ubisoft and Tencent have also announced today a strategic partnership that will significantly accelerate the reach of Ubisoft franchises in China in the coming years.

Yves Guillemot, CEO and Co-Founder, said: “The evolution in our shareholding is great news for Ubisoft. It was made possible thanks to the outstanding execution of our strategy and the decisive support of Ubisoft talents, players and shareholders. I would like to warmly thank them all. The investment from new long-term shareholders in Ubisoft demonstrates their trust in our future value creation potential, and Ubisoft’s share buy-back will be accretive to all shareholders. Finally, the new strategic partnership agreement we signed will enable Ubisoft to accelerate its development in China in the coming years and fully leverage a market with great potential.”

“Today, Ubisoft is fully reaping the benefits of our long-term strategy and the successful transformation towards a more recurring and profitable business. Ubisoft is perfectly positioned to capture the numerous video game growth drivers in the coming years. We are focused more than ever on delivering on our strategic plan.”

Investment from new long-term shareholders in Ubisoft

Ontario Teachers’ has committed to acquire 3,787,878 Ubisoft shares (3.4% of capital), equivalent to approximately €250 million and Tencent has committed to acquire 5,591,469 Ubisoft shares (5.0% of capital). These investments are made at a price of €66 per share and do not grant any representation on Ubisoft’s board of directors. Tencent has also undertaken not to transfer its shares nor to increase its shareownership and votings rights in Ubisoft.

As part of the transaction, Ubisoft and Tencent have also signed a strategic partnership agreement that will significantly accelerate the reach of Ubisoft franchises in China in the coming years.

The entry of these two high-profile investors in Ubisoft’s share capital validates Ubisoft’s strategy and confirms the value creation potential for its shareholders in coming years.

Ubisoft share buy-back

Ubisoft agreed to buy back up to 9,090,909 of its own shares (8.1% of capital) from Vivendi through a structured transaction taking the form of a forward sale of Vivendi shares to Crédit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank (CACIB), and a forward buy-back mechanism of shares from CACIB by Ubisoft, enabling Ubisoft to progressively buy-back shares from 2019 to 2021. This buy-back will be structured through a derivative product whereby Ubisoft will enter into a pre-paid forward agreement on part of the shares, with settlement in shares at maturity in 2021 or by anticipation, and for the remainder of the shares, a total return swap with settlement either at maturity or by anticipation at Ubisoft’s discretion, either in cash (Ubisoft either benefiting or supporting the variation in the value of the relevant shares) or with a settlement in shares against the payment of the price for such shares. The share buy-back will be financed mainly through Ubisoft’s existing financial resources. In the event of an increase in the size of the accelerated private placement, the number of shares that are bought back by Ubisoft will be reduced accordingly.

These acquisitions will be made at a price of €66 per share.

Shares bought-back are primarily intended to be cancelled with an accretive effect for all Ubisoft shareholders or used as part of share compensation plans or share-indexed compensation plans for employees.

Finexsi, acting as independent financial expert, rendered a fairness opinion on the share buy-back confirming that the financial terms of the transaction were fair for the minority shareholders of Ubisoft and that the transaction was in the corporate interest of Ubisoft.

Guillemot Brothers SE acquisition of shares

As part of the transaction, Guillemot Brothers SE agreed to acquire 3,030,303 shares (2.7% of capital) at a price of €66 per share, bringing Guillemot Brothers SE’s ownership to 17,406,414 shares representing 19.4% of voting rights and 15.6% of share capital and the Guillemot concert to 20,636,193 shares, representing 24.6% of voting rights and 18.5% of share capital. The purchase will be implemented through a structured financing in the form of derivative instruments by which Guillemot Brothers SE will enter into a forward contract with CACIB and a collar financing on these Ubisoft shares, maturing in 2021 or by anticipation, and settled in shares or in cash. Shares underlying the collar financing will be pledged to CACIB, who will be authorized to re-use them from Guillemot Brothers SE subject to certain conditions specified in the agreement.

Accelerated Bookbuilding with institutional investors

The remainder of Vivendi’s stake, representing 8,988,741 shares (8.0% of capital), will be sold at a price of €66 per share through an Accelerated Bookbuilding with institutional investors. Based on the level of interest in the placement, the size of the Accelerated Bookbuilding could be increased up to 1,500,000 shares, reducing accordingly the number of shares bought back by Ubisoft.

J.P. Morgan Securities Plc is acting as Sole Global Coordinator on the Accelerated Bookbuilding. As part of this Accelerated Bookbuilding, CACIB, as Guillemot Brothers SE’s counterpart in the forward contract and the collar financing will also sell 2,887,879 shares in the hedging of its derivatives operations.

The transaction will be launched today. Final terms as well as the outcome of the placement will be determined at the end of the bookbuilding expected on March 21, 2018. Settlement will take place two trading days after closing of bookbuilding.

Ubisoft financial targets confirmed

Ubisoft confirms its financial targets for 2017-18 and 2018-19, as well as its long-term growth perspectives.

J.P. Morgan Securities Plc and Lazard Frères are acting as financial advisors to Ubisoft while Bredin Prat is acting as legal counsel.

ADULT SWIM GAMES TO PUBLISH POOL PANIC, THE WORLD’S LEAST REALISTIC POOL SIMULATOR, THIS YEAR ON NINTENDO SWITCH™ AND WINDOWS PC

ATLANTAMarch 20, 2018 – Adult Swim Games has announced it will publish independent developer Rekim’s sprawling adventure game, Pool Panic, “soon” on Nintendo Switch™ and Windows PC.

Pool Panic is the world’s least realistic pool simulator. Play as a mischievous, and dare we say, oblivious cue ball in a giant game of pool that sprawls across a colorful cartoon overworld with more than 100 levels. Explore jungles, deserts, carnivals, cities and more while knocking around a peculiar cast of billiard balls, most of which won’t appreciate being pocketed.

A variety of evolving rule sets and mechanics force players to think strategically about how to line up the perfect shot through each stage, whether it’s solving puzzles or fighting bosses. Play through the entire journey on your own and challenge your friends to a ridiculous pool party in 2-4 player local multiplayer.

Other key sights and sounds include:

  • Ride a Ferris wheel!
  • Take down bosses and join a motorcycle gang chase!
  • Explore caves where even the bats are balls!
  • Play nine holes of mini-golf with a pool cue!
  • Flee the zombie horde! But careful, they’re contagious!
  • Knock off other balls for your own gain!
  • Go skiing and mountain climbing! With balls!
  • Hunt boy scouts in the woods! Steal their hats!
  • With over 100 tracks of music from Grandmaster Gareth!

“Wrocław is one of the biggest and most technologically advanced cities in Poland and a playing field for serious creative talent. RULE THE SKIES WITH WARFRAME’S NEW ZEPHYR PRIME, AVAILABLE NOW

RULE THE SKIES WITH WARFRAME’S NEW ZEPHYR PRIME, AVAILABLE NOW

Independent Canadian developer and publisher Digital Extremes has uncaged Zephyr Prime, the Warframe® Prime Access version of the airborne avian of destruction, available today on Steam PC, PlayStation®4, and Xbox One. Concentrating on air attacks, mobility, and strategizing combat from a bird’s eye view, Zephyr Prime is a more powerful version of the standard Zephyr Warframe. Agile and graceful, the beautiful Zephyr is in her element while bending air currents, dash-gliding through the air, and bewildering enemies with stunning dive-bombs from above.

The Prime Access program introduces new Prime Warframes players can unlock instantly by purchasing a Prime Access Pack, or by earning and crafting for free in-game through the Relic system.

Arm yourself with Zephyr’s unique Prime weapons and slay enemies from above.

With Zephyr Prime Access, Tenno not only gain access to one of the more uncommon Warframes, Zephyr Prime, they also get access to:

  • Zephyr Prime Glyphs: Players can strut their stuff with all-new Glyphs!
  • Tiberon Prime Rifle: Art meets ingenuity with this beautifully deadly rifle.
  • Kronen Prime: Ancient blades, perfected for today’s combat.
  • Zephyr Prime Accessories:
    • Commodore Prime Suit: Players can take command with this regal Operator Suit.
    • Tibor Prime Armor: Direct your pet Kavat to strike fear into enemies with this striking golden armor.
    • Tibor Prime Gene-Masking Kit: Complement your Kavat’s Tibor Armor with an elegant Primed Gene-Mask.
    • BONUS: Kavat Incubator Segment and Kavat Starter Kit.

Zephyr wields four powerful Abilities, some of which were upgraded during the February re-balance updates. Those include: Tailwind, an airborne hover dash that can transform into a dive bomb. Tail Wind now costs half as much energy when cast in the air while doing more damage, and each enemy hit increases Tail Wind damage by 25% (damage resets upon landing). Dive Bomb also now fires on slight angles, as long as players are looking mostly down; Airburst, a massively dense burst of air that explodes on contact, sending enemies flying (and can combine with Tornado for extra effects); Turbulence, which creates a wind shield that deflects enemy projectiles; and Tornado, which Zephyr casts to create a barrage of deadly wind tunnels, sucking enemies in and leaving them defenseless.

COMBAT RACING TURNED UPSIDE DOWN IN GRIP

Futuristic combat racer GRIP coming to Xbox One, PlayStation® 4, Nintendo Switch and PC, fully charged with wheels-to-the-wall action

Watford, United Kingdom and Toronto, Canada, 20th March, 2018, Wired Productions Ltd., a leading independent video games publisher, and ground-breaking developer Caged Element Inc. are thrilled to announce that GRIP – the ferociously fast, futuristic combat racer – is set to arrive on the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, Xbox One, the all-in-one entertainment system from Microsoft, Nintendo Switch™ and Windows PC via Steam in 2018.

Fully enhanced for PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X, GRIP was inspired by the Rollcage games of the late 90’s and backed by a highly-skilled and accomplished team. Harnessing the power of Unreal® Engine 4 to deliver gravity defying physics alongside a bristling arsenal of outlandish weapons. GRIP delivers the fastest, most competitive racing experience ever. Featuring a killer soundtrack, furious speeds and intense action, GRIP is guaranteed to generate unforgettable gaming moments – online or offline – with nail-biting split screen racing and tournaments.

Evolved from the age of street racing, the world of GRIP is brutal and cut-throat to the core. To win the race is never enough, greatness comes from the journey and the trail of merciless destruction you unleash upon your rivals along the way.

Scale walls, ceilings and anything else you can get your tyres on to… as you master tantalising tracks, tricks and perform mind-blowing stunts to race your way across the cosmos. Customise your vehicle, utilise devastating weapons and exploit a destructible environment to ensure not only victory, but the complete annihilation of your opponents.

“We’re very excited to finally announce our partnership with Wired Productions today,” said Chris Mallinson, Game Director at Caged Element. “GRIP began as a passion project paying tribute to the great Rollcage games and racers of a past era, but it’s now truly transformed into a fully-fledged, futuristic combat racer fit for this generation. We’re extremely proud of the game and can’t wait to unleash it later this year on all platforms.  Combat racing is back, baby.”

“As long-standing fans of Rollcage and the combat racing genre, we’re delighted to sign GRIP and to build our partnership with the incredible team at Caged Element,” said Leo Zullo, Managing Director at Wired Productions. “Born from passion and nostalgia, driven by great minds and taking full advantage of the latest capabilities in both engine and hardware, GRIP is a racer with limitless horsepower and the title to keep your eye on this year.”

GRIP will make its US debut this week at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, in South Hall, Booth #1023 (in the UKIE area of the show) and will be available for consumers to get hands on for the first time at PAX East, Booth #20031 (Boston, USA) and EGX Rezzed (London, UK).

SKY NOON PRESENTS THE AIR POWERED ARSENAL OF THE REIMAGINED WILD WEST

SKY NOON PRESENTS THE AIR POWERED ARSENAL OF THE REIMAGINED WILD WEST

Saddle Up for the Closed Beta This April and Join the Official Discord Channel Launching Today

Independent game developer Lunar Rooster and indie games partner Reverb Triple XP have released today an all new trailer for their reimagined western Sky Noon that showcases all of the various weapons and tools that are at player’s disposal. From the huge AOE blast of the “Jail Breaker” Hand Cannon, to the automatic fire of the “Road Runner” Machine Pistol, there’s a weapon for every player’s style in Sky Noon. But remember pardner – in this first person action brawler, these guns aren’t equipped with bullets! They all hold powerful rounds of compressed air bursts perfectly suitable for blasting opponents off the floating islands!

Gamers ready to cowboy up into Sky Noon are in luck! Reverb Triple XP will be taking sign-ups to a special Closed Beta that will take place this April. Please sign-up HERE to take part in the Sky Noon Closed Beta and stay tuned for more details on the official Sky Noon Discord channel.

Wooah Nelly, that’s right! The Official Sky Noon Discord Channel also launches today and gamers should join the Sky Noon posse for future news on the game, social events, and giveaway promotions: discord.gg/skynoon

Some of the rip-roaring weapons and tools featured in Sky Noon:

  • Machine Pistol aka Road Runner: Target other players with endless bursts of air as the Machine Pistol is fully equipped to handle a large quantity of air rounds.
  • Shotgun aka Typhoon: The range of the Shotgun may be short, but with a wide spread shooting capacity, players will be able to efficiently take down their opponents.
  • Revolver aka Ol’ Faithful: For the player who has dreamed of being a western sharp shooter ala John Wayne, the Revolver is the perfect weapon to pick off your enemies with precision.
  • Hand Cannon aka Jail Breaker: The Hand Cannon is the gun for players who want to send their opponents blasting off into the clouds with a powerful BOOM!
  • Grappling Hook aka…The Lifeline: Players can use the grappling hook to latch onto buildings, crates, or the floating islands themselves to save themselves from being eliminated!

Sky Noon takes place in a reinvented Wild West universe where the frontier floats among the clouds. Powerful cartels crave to control the most precious resource in the West: water. Players take the role of hired gunslingers that battle opposing fighters across floating islands in the sky. There are no health meters in Sky Noon; instead, to eliminate enemies, players use various super-power compressed air weapons to send them flying out of their boot spurs! Grappling hooks and lassos must constantly be used to prevent players from falling off into the great blue sky. Combined with other items like steam-powered jetpacks, jump pads, and teleporters, cowboys need to be quick on the draw and light on their boots in the fast-paced, aerial mayhem of Sky Noon.

Sky Noon will be launching on Steam Early Access in Q2 2018. Cowboys looking to join the gang should follow the game development on Twitter, “Like” us on Facebook, connect on Discord, and visit the official site, SkyNoonGame.com.
