Paris, July 9, 2018 – Toki makes his great return on Nintendo Switch with a remake featuring all-new graphics and re-orchestrated music. The game will be available on November 22nd, 2018. Initially released in 1989 on arcade machines, this cult 2D action/platform game marked a whole generation of players with its simian main character and a level of difficulty typical of games at the time.

Those with fond memories of the golden age of arcade games, and the famous ‘insert coin’ message, will be delighted to discover the Retrollector edition. This edition will also be available on November 22nd and will include:

  • The box version of the Toki game
  • An exclusive 16-page Toki comic, with an original story illustrated by Philippe Dessoly
  • Prints
  • Sticker sheets
  • A mini arcade machine with the game’s colors to house the Nintendo Switch™ screen!

Philippe Dessoly, artist for the original version of Toki on the Amiga, and well-known for his official drawings of UFO Robot and Captain Harlock, is the Artistic Director for this remake. Pierre Adane has been entrusted with game development, while the music will be written by Raphael Gesqua, an experienced video game music composer. All three have already worked together on the game Mr. Nutz.

Toki’s story:

Toki the warrior lived peacefully in the jungle with his sweetheart Miho. Appearing out of nowhere, the terrifying voodoo sorcerer Vookimedlo and heinous demon Bashtar kidnap Miho and turn the poor Toki into a chimpanzee! Unfortunately for his sweetheart, he has become a hairy, lethargic ape…
The former warrior must get used to his new form and, deprived of his traditional weapons, use his powerful jaw to spit strange projectiles at his enemies. During his adventure, Toki will find objects that will help him complete his quest, from a football helmet to a pair of flippers and snorkel.

Video Review

Overview

It’s time to return to the wide-open roads of America in The Crew 2 with three of your best friends. The Crew 2 is building upon the previous games’ open world experience by adding several new disciplines, such as stunt flying and racing boats. The Crew 2 offers four motorsport families that will introduce players to different aspects of motorsport culture: street racing, pro racing, off-roading, and freestyle.

Story

Unlike the original game The Crew, The Crew 2 pretty much skips out on having any sort of real plot. Instead, the game embraces the social media age and sets players on a vague journey of being the best racer who is swarmed by social media followers. The writing is forgettable and serves as context for the game. The random interjections in the middle of races where characters will comment on the player’s progress is a major sore spot, as those lines tend to be corny and cringe inducing.

Gameplay

The Crew 2 is an open world racer set in a miniaturized version of the United States of America. The game offers a large map filled with small towns, back country roads, and race tracks to explore. Dotted across the landscape are races, stunt challenges, freestyle events, and photo opportunities. The game features fifteen disciplines spread between the four motorsport families that are unlocked as the players gains more social media followers for finishing and winning events, completing challenges, executing stunts, and taking photos with specific objectives in the frame.

I consider my car knowledge to be about the level of the average consumer. The Crew 2’s vehicle list seems like a diverse bunch to me. Most major car brands are present in the game, along with a few more niche manufacturers.  As usual, Toyota is mysteriously absent from the roster. The boats and planes in The Crew 2 are not as diverse, but there are a few recognizable names like the legendary Spitfire and P-51 Mustang airplanes.

The Crew 2 is an RPG/racing hybrid with the vehicle modification system. Mods of varying quality can be found scattered across the map or earned as rewards for winning races and stunt challenges. These parts are needed for improving vehicle capabilities so hard mode events can be completed. The progression could use some work. Each discipline has its own parts that can be freely swapped out between any vehicle in that discipline. Mods come in rarities of green, blue, and pink. Blue mods give one bonus effects, while pink offers two. These bonus effects either improve the performance of the vehicle under specific conditions or increase rewards. The mod system is extremely bare bones. It’s completely randomized as there is no way to craft mods for specific vehicle parts or reroll one of the two bonus effects found on pink mods. Instead, players are forced to keep testing their luck by continuing to grind out more drops.

Mechanically speaking, The Crew 2 is a pretty standard arcade racer. The game is oriented for the average gamer, with its simple controls and forgiving starting difficulty level. Hardcore car fanatics will be able to tweak the handling of their car in the advanced options. The difficulty level jumps around erratically at times. Stunt-based challenges and off-road races are much easier than their road-based counterparts. The jump between normal and hard challenges is also very high, almost always requiring a player to own a higher-level car to be competitive.

Singleplayer is dull. There isn’t much incentive to drive around and explore alone as its always more efficient to grind events for money for new car and mods. The slog to get enough high-quality parts to reach the recommended levels for hard mode races is tough and will require playing the same races ad nauseum. The events themselves are good, offering a wide variety of disciplines that would theoretically keep the game pretty fresh if it wasn’t for the incessant need to grind.

Multiplayer is where The Crew 2 shines, even if it’s not feature complete. The best moments of The Crew 2 all come from hanging out with friends with the game’s map as a blank canvas. Even simple exploration is a lot more fun with friends horsing around at the same time. The open world nature lets creative players think up of great games. Some of the most fun I had in The Crew 2 involved wrangling six friends to play a game of vehicle tag. The player that was it used a dirt buggy while the rest of the group removed tire traction on their starter road cars. The result was hours of loud fun on Discord. Of course, organizing the game illustrated one of The Crew 2’s weaknesses: crews are capped at four players, but sessions support up to eight. Trying to squeeze everyone into the same session took a good half hour of joining and leaving crews until everyone managed to get into the same session. Unfortunately, these home-made PVP games are a stand in for the lack of actual PVP in The Crew 2. Currently, crews can only participate in races as a group. While technically everyone fights for first place, only one of the four players need to reach the event goal for the entire crew to reap the rewards. Proper PVP is incoming but won’t arrive until the end of 2018 with a free update. I only hope that this update is not strictly limited to racing and stunt events, but also supports eight player free roam.

My experience with the PC port is positive. The game offers a solid suite of PC oriented options and support. The only downside is the game is capped at 60 FPS. Keyboard and mouse controls are never ideal for a racing game, but it works well enough. The controller execution is solid, and many major racing wheels are supported. There are a few notable exceptions on PC though, like Logitech’s current line up of G29 and G920 racing wheels.

Visuals

The Crew 2 looks good. The game has gorgeous weather effects. The map is a beautiful rendition of some of America’s iconic sights. The pedestrian animations don’t look natural but are a relatively minor complaint. While there are plenty of options for car customization, character customization falls a bit flat. There are only a small handful of pre-made characters. There are specific suits and helmets designed for different vehicles, but there are only two sets of equipment that can be equipped at once: street clothes and protective gear. The result is some odd combinations like a player in a Formula 1 fire proof suit with a pilot’s helmet riding a dirt bike while the AI is dressed appropriately for the occasion. I would have preferred a separate event-appropriate outfit that automatically switched depending on the vehicle.

Audio

The audio experience in The Crew 2 is solid. To my untrained ears, the car sound effects are enjoyable. Most of the voice acting is excellent, though the LIVE Racing announcer is the weakest of the bunch. The in-game radio offers a decent selection of music showcasing some smaller artists with a few bigger names sprinkled in.

Overall

The Crew 2 is a perfect example of a jack of all trades, but master of none type title. It’s lack of depth and reliance on grinding makes for a boring singleplayer experience. Throw in a few friends in the mix, however, and the game becomes a lot more fun. Unfortunately, it feels like The Crew 2 was pushed out the door too early, as proper multiplayer lobbies are currently missing from the game.

LEGO The Incredibles Review

LEGO The Incredibles

Developer: TT Games
Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
PlatformsPlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Switch (Reviewed)
Release Date: 15 June 2018
Price: $39.99 USD – Available Here / $89.95 AUD – Available Here

Overview

Just another new Lego game? Well, this time with LEGOThe Incredibles we definitely got a quite different franchise and can play some other superheroes than the known ones from DC or Marvel. While the game concept hasn’t changed much it’s always great to see some fresh licences making their way into the LEGO universe. The take on Pixar’s characters from the developers  of  TT Games offers a great service for fans right at the start when you see that famous lamp made out of bricks. But of course that’s not all what LEGO The Incredibles has in store for you.

Story

If you haven’t seen The Incredibles 2 yet, you should go and watch it first, because the game starts directly after the events of the first movie. The Incredibles family is trying to stop the Underminer together with friend Frozone. After the task is successful they seem themselves confronted with the police and their no-supers-policy.  After meeting with the Deavors the Paar family is moving into a special house, as they want to bring the supers back. It was quite surprising to me to find out that you have to play through the newest movie and then unlock the first one. I mean what is the sense to use superpowers from characters so early in the game, when the discovery of them is basically a story part of the first movie? I wonder what the developers had in mind using this design approach. Also there are some modifications involved to deliver a more child-friendly game, in other words – no one dies in LEGO The Incredibles.

Gameplay

Besides following the story mode you can explore an open world and start your search for collectibles. Also a second player can jump into the game at any time and on Nintendo Switch you can control a character with a single Joy-Con. Great! There’s no online-mode though, which means that LEGO The Incredibles is purely a singleplayer or couch co-op experience.

If we talk about the characters of course Mr. Incredible makes use of his enormous strength and smashes through walls while Elastigirl can transform her body into different shapes and stretch to reach distant objects. As for the children of the married couple we have Dash, who’s the fastest character not only movement wise but also building wise. Violet has powerful attacks and makes use of her psionic blades, invisibility and protective shields. Of course it is again about using the right characters and abilities to progress through the different levels. With a total of over 100 unlockable characters there is definitely something for everyone and also some unexpected surprises made it into the game. For example Lightning McQueen from Cars, Merida from Brave and Flik from A Bug’s Life. I have to admit though that some characters also appear multiple with different costumes, but they always stick with the same abilities.

Regarding the general gameplay and progression system it’s pretty straight forward and unfortunately Elastigirl’s use of different shapes don’t require any kind of creativity as there’s always only one right way to move on. As mentioned the only way to play this game together with another person is on your couch. There’s a bit of communication needed to solve the puzzles and missions together but you can feel that the team wanted to make this “just” a fun game for the whole family and especially children, so don’t expect any great challenges. As I jumped into the multiplayer together with my girlfriend, she explored the whole world on different vehicles and had a lot of fun. Besides that she also had some good laughs about the characters and dialogues in the game. I guess we can definitely say –  mission accomplished!

Visuals & Audio

Visually LEGO The Incredibles doesn’t differ from other titles of the series. A lot of colors, a lot of explosions and well of course a world made out of the famous bricks. The original voice actors are also part of LEGO The Incredibles and in some cases, where it didn’t work out they found decent replacements. One example is the character Woody, originally voiced by Tom Hanks and replaced by his brother Jim Hanks. The soundtrack from Michael Giacchino is a great fit during  the playthrough and helps to create a great gaming experience.

Overall

As the puzzles are mostly based on scenes from the movies, it might be helpful to have a certain knowledge before playing LEGO The Incredibles. If you get stuck, you can make use of the integrated hint system though. You shouldn’t expect a deep character roster like the DC and Marvel titles from LEGO offer, but if you are a fan of Pixar’s characters and let’s be honest, who isn’t, this game is definitely something you’ll enjoy. Grab your child, girlfriend, boyfriend, mom or dad and spent some nice hours in this colorful LEGO world. In the end there was only question, that I kept asking myself: Why do I play the second movie before the first one?

Exotic Matter Launches Today July 6th in Early Access on Steam 12 pm PDT

Exotic Matter Launches Today July 6th in Early Access on Steam 12 pm PDT

Minecraft Meets Metroid – Survive, Explore and Build on a Mysterious Alien Planet Full of Dangers and Secrets.

Exotic Matter is launching their early access edition on steam today July 6th at 12 pm PDT, and as an early bird deal, they will be selling it at 10% off the regular price of 19.99 USD during the first week.

In Exotic Matter, you’ll find yourself shipwrecked on an alien planet, light-years away from earth and your primary mission is to survive. Freely explore the open-world of planet ‘Xcylin’ and dive deep into the roguelike underground facilities of an extinct race to fight the Thanatos and craft your way back home to save yourself and the entire human race. Exotic Matter is not only a game; it’s a full-fledged voxel engine that enables players to create their items/weapons/blocks and even their planet types.

“Most voxel games don’t give you any direction. No specific goal or mission to accomplish. With Exotic Matter, we are trying something different. We drop players on an alien world with a singular goal and a few hints about how to accomplish it, then leave how to proceed up to them. It’s a voxel survival game with a goal, a story, and a carefully designed procedurally-generated Metroidvania world. Not only do you have to survive but you have to explore countless alien facilities in order to succeed and improve your abilities. How the story unfolds, and whether or not you’ll make it, is totally up to you. I like to think it’s a unique approach to the genre: a voxel Metroidvania!” –Florian Frankenberger, Lead Developer
