Overview

A Rite from the Stars is an old school point and click adventure game set on the fictional island of Kaikala. Kirm, a mute boy from the Makoa tribe must pass his rite of passage into manhood with the help of his guiding star Hoku and his meercat Mirk. The three will venture deep into the jungles to prove Kirm’s wisdom, courage, and spirit.

Story

Probably the most notable thing about A Rite from the Stars is the constructed Makoan language made especially for the game. All the spoken lines are in this fictional language with subtitles for your region. For the most part, the Makoan language lines up nicely with the subtitles, letting players pick up the odd word or two. A few lines feel like they were changed last minute as the speaker will say a syllable, but the subtitles will provide two or three full sentences.

The plot is serviceable, but generally quite bland. For the most part, the spirit challenge is the most interesting of the three because it has the most meat on the bones. Since the Kirm is mute, most of the dialogue involves Hoku and other characters. I think it’s handled well as Kirm still participates in conversations with gestures and facial expression.

Gameplay

A Rite from the Stars is a point and click adventure. Each of the three challenges have a main gameplay mechanic. Wisdom is the most traditional of the three, requiring players to pick up items and use them in the right spot for most puzzles. In the spirit challenge, players can switch between the physical world and the spirit world. Finally, the courage challenge pairs Kirm with his meercat Mirk who is immune to poison.

The puzzles in A Rite from the Stars has some bright points among the doldrum. The music-based puzzles are my favourites, especially the rhythm-based puzzle early in the spirit challenge. The game generally excels with the logic puzzles as long as the puzzle’s main mechanic only appears once or twice. The puzzles are creative and offer a variety of challenges to keep players on their toes. Disappointingly, there are long stretches in the courage section where the puzzles are some variant of the fruit and poison puzzle. It gets repetitive and boring, making it feel like the developers ran out of ideas part way through the game.

The puzzles that test the player’s reflexes and timing are the most frustrating due to the game’s clunky controls. The game only requires the use of the mouse, using left click to move or interact and right to trigger the challenge’s special ability. The scheme generally works well except for the timing-based puzzles in the courage section, as guiding Kirm and Mirk to the correct locations at separate areas can be unpleasantly challenging. The problem lies with the game’s painfully slow movement speeds combined with the rather small window of opportunity to successfully complete puzzles. The shooting star puzzle earns a special mention for being the worst of the timing puzzles. The hitboxes are much larger than what is displayed on screen and later portions require a good bit of waiting around for the right moment, making failure a long and frustrating trek back from the checkpoint.

Most of the game’s interactive hotspots are responsive. The vine walls in the courage section are the major exception. They have a very small hotspot that is unnecessarily fussy about responding to commands. The camera angles can be awkward at times. The angles make it difficult to navigate multi-area puzzles. Changing areas in these zones can sometimes cause Kirm to slow his casual jog down to a crawl, further exacerbating the game’s already slow pacing.

Visuals

A Rite from the Stars is a simple, but attractive looking game. The art style is very cartoony with bright colours and exaggerated characters. The spirit challenge is easily the most eye-catching part of the game with a trippy atmosphere and off the wall set pieces.

Audio

The audio experience in A Rite from the Stars is excellent. The sound effects are solid. The voice actors do a great job of delivering their lines, sounding confident and fluent in the fictional Makoan language. I enjoyed listening to the soundtrack. The music is a playful mix that takes the classic video game soundtrack and infuses it with exotic instruments.

Overall

A Rite from the Stars has an interesting presentation and a handful of solid puzzles. While the brain teasers are fun, their shine is blotted out by the frustrating timing and reflex-based puzzles. The painfully slow movement speed and the repeated use of certain puzzles makes the game feel like a demo that was stretched out until it was long enough to be sold as a $15 USD game. I believe A Rite from the Stars would have been a much stronger title if a lot of the pointless travel were cut out and the courage section was trimmed down to its base puzzles and redistributed between the other two challenges. Drop the price to compensate for the much shorter length of the game, and Risin’ Goat would have had a much more polished title.

NBA 2K18 Hits Franchise Sales Record

This generation’s highest-rated basketball video game has sold-in more than 10 million units cementing legacy with major milestone

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – August 3, 20182K has announced that NBA® 2K18 has now sold-in more than 10 million units, setting a new record for the franchise. Since its inception in 1999, the NBA 2K franchise has sold-in more than 80 million units worldwide and is the top-rated and top-selling NBA video game simulation series of the past 17 years*.

NBA 2K18 featured the Boston Celtics’ star point guard, Kyrie Irving and 2016 Basketball Hall of Famer, Shaquille O’Neal on the covers of the Standard and Legend Editions, respectively. This is a major milestone in 2K’s 19-year history of delivering the most thrilling NBA basketball action.

NBA 2K18 is our highest-selling sports title ever, and a testament to the tireless hard work and innovation of the team at Visual Concepts,” said Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive.  “The ability to improve consistently upon an annual series and grow its audience reflects the team’s drive to remain on the leading-edge of pop culture and finding new and exciting ways to captivate and engage players.”

The NBA 2K franchise features all the exciting on-court action that comes from a real NBA game, and NBA 2K18 introduced The Neighbourhood – an online, connected world inside NBA 2K, allowing players to immerse themselves in the off-the-court lifestyle of an NBA star.

“Without the tremendous passion, ambition, and dedication of the entire team at Visual Concepts, a milestone of this magnitude wouldn’t be possible,” said Greg Thomas, President, Visual Concepts. “It’s incredibly rewarding that the team’s hard work and desire to achieve greatness in NBA 2K has reached so many fans around the globe, and now we look forward to the challenge of setting new benchmarks with the upcoming release of NBA 2K19.”

In addition to the state-of-the-art simulation that NBA 2K is known for, the franchise has remained on the cutting-edge of pop culture by partnering with the hottest celebrities in film, music and pop culture, such as Michael B Jordan, Spike Lee, Jay-Z, Pharrell Williams, Drake, DJ Khaled and Justin Bieber, and has featured in-game partnerships with top brands including Nike, Gatorade, Ruffles, Jordan Brand, Reese’s Puffs, Under Armour, Foot Locker, New Era, State Farm, Spalding, Tissot, Mountain Dew, Mitchell & Ness, JBL, Adidas, and Kia.

NBA 2K is sold in over 122 countries and has reached local audiences with regional releases including NBA 2K Online and the upcoming NBA 2K Online 2 in Asia. In 2018, Take-Two formed a joint-venture with the NBA to form the NBA 2K League launching the first-ever professional eSports league built around a simulation sports video game.

Salt and Sanctuary Invites Daring Adventurers On Nintendo Switch™Today

Salt and Sanctuary Invites Daring Adventurers On Nintendo Switch™Today

SEATTLE, Wash. – 3 AUGUST 2018 – Salt and Sanctuary, Ska Studios’ brutal hand-drawn 2D Soulslike platformer with over 800,000 downloads, releases today on the Nintendo Switch with the help of porting specialist BlitWorks.

After a confrontation with an eldritch beast from the dark depths of the sea slaughters a pirate crew, a lone survivor washes ashore. An old man proffers ominous riddles to this person, calling them the Saltborn. Seeking answers, the Saltborn arms themself and sets out across an island haunted by all manner of undead monstrosities.

Create a character, customizing everything from physical appearance to weapon choice, and explore this forgotten land either alone or with another Saltborn via local co-op. Make a character build ranging from a measured, patient swordswoman who cuts only at opportune times to a wicked spellcaster that manipulates the elements to their advantage. Sixteen weapon types, more than fifty sets of armor that offer stats, abilities, and change appearance, and a massive skill tree offer the chance to survive Salt and Sanctuary in near-infinite ways.

The cruel, aberrant creatures that prowl these cursed lands stop at nothing to purge the Saltborn from their territories. Over twenty brutal bosses, from the jawless Queen of Smiles to the dreaded Witch of the Lake, eviscerate interlopers on sight. Cautious adventurers can best these challenges in tough-but-fair combat however they wish. Dodge, block, cleave, and scorch adversaries in hopes of revealing the horrifying secrets of the island and its drowned denizens.

Even after discovering the truth, sinister tribulations provide reasons to play Salt and Sanctuary multiple times. Difficult New Game+ and Challenge Modes including permadeath mean that masochists always have a thrilling trial ahead.”

“Together, we’ve crafted a dark world that both tests and rewards those daring enough to enter,” said Michelle and James Silva, co-creators at Ska Studios. “Welcome, Switch adventurers, to our ghoulish island, where mystery and death loom.”

Salt and Sanctuary is available digitally for $17.99 USD for Nintendo Switch on the Nintendo eShop in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Traditional and Simplified Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Team NINJA Bolsters Hard-Hitting Roster, Introducing Two New Playable Characters at Evo 2018

Hertfordshire, 2nd August 2018 – KOEI TECMO Europe announced today the addition of two more fighters to the DEAD OR ALIVE 6 roster, including returning antagonist Rig, as well as Diego — a fascinating and forceful new character to the DOA Universe.  Both combatants will be showcased in the first consumer playable build of DEAD OR ALIVE 6 at the Evolution Championship Series (Evo) 2018 inside the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, on the 3rd-4th August 2018.

Known as “The Uncrowned Street Hero,” Diego makes his DOA debut boasting the raw and brutal skills of a street fighter, utilising everything from headbutts to tackles in taking down opponents. This gritty fighter grew up in the back alleys of New York, earning money to support his ailing mother by competing in many street matches. Long rumoured to be the strongest fighter in his neighbourhood, he is seen by many locals as a hero as he utilises his experience brawling in confined quarters to impact fights with a set of strong-style moves.

Joining Diego is returning taekwondo master Rig, who boasts the “Kicks of Truth and Deceit.” Rig, who originally debuted in DEAD OR ALIVE 5, is a former oil platform worker whose kick-heavy style has evolved to incorporate more acrobatic manoeuvres. To kick-off their confrontation in DOA6, the formidable brawler Rig challenges Diego in a New York alley, and the two decide the time for conversation is over; it’s time to fight!

Diego and Rig join the six playable characters previously announced (Helena Douglas, Hayate, Ryu Hayabusa, Zack, Kasumi, and Jann Lee), as fans in attendance at Evo will be able to test out the latest build of the game while winning exclusive swag, including DOA6 shirts, tote bags, and lanyards.

To celebrate the reveal of this fascinating new character, KOEI TECMO Europe released a reveal trailer showcasing the iconic meeting between Diego and Rig, alongside a selection of new assets showing the Training Mode for the first time!

DEAD OR ALIVE 6 is currently in development for the PlayStation®4 Computer Entertainment System, the Xbox One family of devices including the Xbox One X, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft, and digitally on Windows PC via Steam®, and is slated for release in Early 2019.

PlayStation Plus in August | Mafia 3 and Dead by Daylight Special Edition

PlayStation Australia has today revealed the line-up of PlayStation Plus monthly games for August! Joining the roster are two critically acclaimed titles for PS Plus members on 8th August; Mafia 3 and Dead by Daylight Special Edition.

Mafia 3:
After years of combat in Vietnam, Lincoln Clay knows this truth: family isn’t who you’re born with, it’s who you die for. When his surrogate family, the black mob, is wiped out by the Italian Mafia, Lincoln builds a new family and blazes a path of military-grade revenge through the Mafioso responsible.

Dead by Daylight Special Edition:
Dead by Daylight is a multiplayer (4vs1) horror game where one player takes on the role of the savage Killer, and the other four players play as Survivors, trying to escape the Killer and avoid being caught, tortured and killed.

On top of the standard PS Plus Monthly Games, starting in August PlayStation Australia will also be re-introducing two bonus games: PS VR compatible title Here They Lie, (available between 7th August – 2nd October) and PlayLink title Knowledge is Power (available in PS Plus between 7th August – 6th November.)
