Overview

We’re all familiar with the never-ending debate of games being art. Are they, are they not? Plenty of arguments for, plenty against and usually certain titles get thrown around like The Journey, Metal Gear Solid, the recent NieR: Automata and so on. And on the far end, we have some games staying away from all that drama. They’re created in mind so we can mostly wreak havoc, drive around super fast or just blow stuff up. Just Cause series did a fine job on that last bit. There is usually some half-interesting story about saving the world or whatever as an excuse for all the destruction and we’re good to go. I finished recently Just Cause 3 and this sequel promised some neat new stuff like a weather system, different biomes, and more gadgets to create destruction. Why? Well, just cause (terrible, terrible joke…first and last one in this review, I promise).

Story

We find our favorite agent and stuntman, Rico Rodriguez, in a fictional South American country called Solís. Rico continues waging a personal war against the Black Hand, a powerful private army. Only this time we have a face (or better yet, a leader) behind the army. Gabriella Morales is a newly introduced character in Just Cause 4 and the main antagonist of the game. To make things worse (or interesting, depending on how you look at it), Rico soon discovers that his late father was working with the Black Hand! How, why and most importantly – was he paid well? They don’t answer that last question in the game but we can definitely find some answers regarding the first two. So the basic story to give some sense to all that mindless destruction is there, now let’s get onto the more important bits.

Gameplay

In short: some things were added, some removed. Some good, some bad. The grappling hook has been upgraded and we can add mods to it. Along with tethering objects (or people) to one another, this time we can have a hook that ends up with a booster. Attach that to a parked car or a person and see them fly sky high. There is also a helium balloon as a hook finish, use that to lift pretty much anything up (mostly confused enemies). We can fine-tune all these mods, adjusting how the balloons and boosters act (do they blow up or pop once they reach a certain height). Some new weapons are in the game but I’m not a fan of how extremely limited ammo capacity they all have. Expect to kill no more than a dozen of enemies, give or take, before you have to zip around and search for a nearby weapon crate. Good old destruction is still with us although with minor adjustments. Unnecessary and unwelcome adjustments. Remember how in previous games you had to blow up & destroy various locations in order to liberate areas and progress through the game? Well, this time you also get chaos points for blowing stuff up and upon reaching a certain level of chaos, you are awarded an army squad. You use a squad to liberate a small portion of the area on the map. So no more 100%ing a certain region to fully liberate it, just mindlessly blow stuff up and it will happen pretty soon. But how do you know if you ever 100% a location or destroy everything? Well, you don’t. Believe it or not, all destructible objects spawn right back after some time. Speaking of the map, Just Cause 4 has the worst UI of all the game in the series. There is a map screen, a separate screen for grapple hook mods, screen for challenges and one to manage supply drops and pilots (used for fast travel). The whole map screen is also incredibly close to you and you have to scroll through it quite a bit to see everything. You also can’t remap some keys and game progression is repetitive as hell. Doing some repetition in side missions is expected to a degree, but Just Cause 4 really pushes it. There is a character called Garland King and she tasks you with doing plenty of stunts for her upcoming movies. The stunts are divided into three sections; pass through a ring driving a certain car, drive through a ring at high speed and fly with a wingsuit through three rings. That’s all. Now repeat it around a hundred times. Lazy and uninspiring as hell.

Visuals

If I were unimpressed with gameplay, then this section is straight up disappointing. I have a brand new rig (recently upgraded) and some visuals are mindbogglingly bad. Upon my first play, I noticed a strange shadow effect, like everything is coated in three layers of pixelated darkness. After some lurking in Just Cause 4 discussions on Steam, I saw someone advising others to turn off SSAO in options to fix it. And what do you know, it worked. The first time that I had to tone down some visuals for a game to look better. The water is also strangely still, no waves whatsoever and I stumbled upon some strange texture of train tracks literally pasted on the ground. Just all flat, like a sticker. If you ever wondered how a PlayStation 2 game would look like in 2018, here is your answer.

Audio

The audio is a big improvement over Just Cause 3, mainly because they added more of it during exploration. You don’t feel alone anymore while gliding with a wingsuit, sometimes a serene music track will kick in. But the biggest improvement this time is the inclusion of radio stations in vehicles. Considering that there are quite a few times where you have to drive from point A to point B in missions, this is a great addition. There are also some oddities during cutscenes, such as the speaking characters sounding like they’re way back in the background compared to where they actually are.

Overall

You know how they say “if something is broken, don’t fix it”? The more I think about (and play) Just Cause 4, a similar thing comes to mind. Don’t change stuff just for the sake of changing it. Ok, maybe after some time I could get used to that atrocious UI. What I can’t get over is the revamped progress system with respawning destructible locations. Why would I ever bother destroying a large and heavily guarded base for 20 minutes is everything is going to reappear from thin air an hour later? Add some visuals that are 5-6 years late to the party and we have a winning recipe – for a game to avoid. To be honest, I feel a bit sad writing all this. After I got my hands on the game, I thought to myself “well this should be fairly easy”. All I needed was more of the same, with new locations and weapons for good measure. Instead, I got more of the stuff nobody asked for with a plethora of technical issues for good measure. I’ve seen traffic going absolutely haywire, enemy ships launching me on the other side of the map, helicopters in kamikaze mode against me and everything else, camera view locking up with only a full game reboot being able to fix it and so on. At this stage, with this price, these visuals and this many bugs, I cannot recommend Just Cause 4. If the previous review of HITMAN 2 was my GOTY of 2018, then this is my disappointment game of the year. My advice is to wait some months to patches and visual tweaks to see if anything can be salvaged from this debacle.

About “Teen Titans GO! to the Movies”

When the Teen Titans go to the big screen, they go big! “Teen Titans GO! to the Movies” finds our egocentric, wildly satirical superheroes in their first feature film extravaganza—a fresh, gleefully clever, kid-appropriately crass and tongue-in-cheek play on the superhero genre, complete with musical numbers.

Will Arnett (The LEGO® Batman Movie) and Kristen Bell (Frozen) lend their voices to the first-ever big-screen version of DC Entertainment and Cartoon Network’s animated TV show, which also stars Greg Cipes (TV’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) as Beast Boy, Scott Menville (TV’s Spider-Man) as Robin, Khary Payton (The Walking Dead) as Cyborg, Tara Strong (the My Little Pony franchise) as Raven, and Hynden Walch (TV’s Adventure Time with Finn & Jake) as Starfire, reprising their roles from the series.

The film was directed by Peter Rida Michail and Aaron Horvath, from a screenplay by Michael Jelenic & Horvath, based on characters from DC. Horvath, Jelenic, Peggy Regan, Michail and Arnett produced, with Sam Register serving as executive producer. The music is by Jared Faber. Apart from Arnett, all are Teen Titans GO! series contributors. Superman was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

From Warner Bros. Animation, the film is available digitally from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and now available on Blu-ray. It is rated PG for action and rude humor. TeenTitansGO-movie.com

Totalitarian Spy Surveillance Simulator Beholder: Complete Edition Out Now on Nintendo Switch

Totalitarian Spy Surveillance Simulator Beholder: Complete Edition Out Now on Nintendo Switch

20% off in all territories until the end of December 20th 2018

London, United Kingdom – December 6th – Developer Warm Lamp Games and publisher Curve Digital have today launched its award-winning totalitarian spy simulation Beholder: Complete Edition on the eShop for Nintendo Switch. Featuring the entirety of Beholder and its ‘Blissful Sleep’ DLC episode, Beholder: Complete Edition will launch with a 20% discount, bringing the price to £9.60 / €11.99 / $11.99 until December 20th.

Already available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, Beholder has sold almost one million units to date and has won numerous awards including GDC 2017 – Best in Play! and Dev Gamm 2017 – Best Indie Game. Beholder: Complete Edition puts you in the shoes of Carl, a state-installed manager of an apartment building, tasked by a tyrannical government to spy on his tenants. In order to unmask and report anyone that might be plotting subversion against the state, you must eavesdrop, break into and search apartments, and plant surveillance equipment like cameras and wiretaps. It’s up to you what to do with that information. Do you snitch on your tenants, or turn a blind eye to their taboo pastimes?

Beholder: Complete Edition is a brilliant mix of genres, combining the management sim elements of being a landlord, with the spy mechanics of being a shadowy government agent,” said Simon Byron, Publishing Director at Curve Digital. “It’s somehow dark, dreary and morally complex, while still being a lot of fun as you go about navigating mounting totalitarian pressure.”

“Inspired heavily by George Orwell, Aldous Huxley and Ray Bradbury, Beholder: Complete Edition, provides a plethora of weighty moral dilemmas,” said Evgeny Sister, Producer at Alawar Premium, who originally published Beholder on PC. “It’s also worryingly topical in today’s society, where advanced technology and government surveillance have gone hand in hand to create an environment of constant paranoia.”

Beholder: Complete Edition comes complete with the ‘Blissful Sleep’ DLC and challenges players to wrestle with impossible choices in a bleak world where the state controls everything, survival is a struggle, and someone is always watching. Do you adhere to the law or your personal interests? Will you be an unapologetic slumlord or a considerate manager to your tenants? Will you report on your denizen’s unsanctioned activities, or allow them to keep their privacy? Protecting yourself and your family always comes at an ethical cost in a totalitarian society ruled by mass surveillance. With procedurally generated scenarios and over 20 different endings to uncover, no decision will be easy.

1C Entertainment Shares Update, New Trailer for Tactical RPG, Fell Seal: Arbiter’s Mark, as Early Access Campaign Earns Player Kudos

1C Entertainment Shares Update, New Trailer for Tactical RPG, Fell Seal: Arbiter’s Mark, as Early Access Campaign Earns Player Kudos

1C Entertainment today released a new story trailer and update for the turn-based tactical RPG, Fell Seal: Arbiter’s Mark, to celebrate the game’s extremely successful Steam Early Access campaign for PC ahead of its multi-platform launch on PC, PlayStation®4, and Xbox One in Spring 2019. The isometric, story-driven RPG currently has a 93% “Very Positive” cumulative rating in Early Access on Steam, with players comparing it favorably to tactical RPG classics.

Fell Seal: Arbiter’s Mark is set in a fantasy world with a touch of steampunk. Players control the Arbiter Kyrie, an Immortal Council agent tasked with preserving order throughout the land, as well as a squad of companions. While the game pays homage to tactical RPG legends, it stands on its own with a slew of improvements and additions to the genre. Through the Early Access program, this experience has been refined through thoughtful development and helpful player comments. Including today’s update, the following key additions have been made:

  • Numerous balance updates based on feedback, including changes for abilities, classes, shops, loot tables, and treasure
  • More special and unique weapons
  • Made the game enjoyable for more players by adding five preset difficulty settings and full customization options that let gamers choose enemy counts and levels, stats, and item usage
  • Game dialogue has been rewritten by a professional writer
  • New visuals including over 200 spell effects
  • New monsters and the new Bzil race, including a secret playable Bzil character

The large number of improvements since the August Early Access launch are especially impressive given that the game’s developer, 6 Eyes Studio, is a husband and wife team making the game as the only two developers, with some external contractors. However, their collective experience doing everything from making games for EA and Activision to creating art for tabletop gaming books has fully prepared them—and extensive player feedback has also helped focus development efforts. Upcoming updates include more Story Battles, Patrols, polish, and content, as per the developers’ Early Access roadmap.

Game Features

  • Classic Tactical Combat Battles: Including rugged terrain and elevation, taking place on beautiful hand-drawn, isometric environments
  • Handcrafted Look and Feel: Hand-drawn pixel art and colorful graphics for all 40 maps
  • Deep Class System: 25 classes and 200 abilities let you truly customize every one of your characters through the selection of their class, sub-class, and passives to create a versatile generalist, a dedicated spell-caster, or a mighty foe-crushing specialist!
  • Extensive Customization: Customize all characters via a wide selection of portraits, outfits, colors, and overall visuals
  • Epic Storyline: Unfolding over 40 story encounters and culminating in challenging end-game content
  • Nice Loot: Equip your army with over 240 pieces of equipment that you can purchase, gather from fallen enemies, or create by crafting

Fell Seal: Arbiter’s Mark is developed by 6 Eyes Studio and published by 1C Entertainment. The game has been rated “T for Teen” by the ESRB. It is now available for PC via Steam Early Access for $19.99.

12 Years in the Making: Huge Sword-Punk Sandbox RPG ‘Kenshi’ Launches Today

12 Years in the Making: Huge Sword-Punk Sandbox RPG ‘Kenshi’ Launches Today

‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ Steam Rating – Thousands of Reviews

Bristol, UK – December 6, 2018: After 12 years of development (including 4 in Early Access) Kenshi, the single player RPG set in a vast and atmospheric ‘Sword-Punk’ style open world, launches for PC today.

Kenshi’s expansive mix of RPG elements, squad-based control and city-building features have earned it a legion of fans. Thousands of Early Access reviews have resulted in an Very Positive ranking (with Overwhelmingly Positive recent reviews).

Kenshi’s gameplay is completely free-roaming: players enjoy the freedom and potential to do whatever they want. Set in an unrelenting world of bloodthirsty cannibals, starving bandits, brutal slavers and wild beasts, Kenshi is an unashamedly hardcore RPG.

“We’ve had our struggles with delays, budget, engine upgrades, and of course mountains of bugs to squash”, says Lo-Fi Games’ CEO and head developer Chris Hunt. “But it’s exciting to reach the finishing line and to see so much enthusiasm amongst the community that supported us for so many years.”

“I hope that Kenshi meets a need in players that wasn’t being met by bigger games in the industry – a need for freedom and depth. Kenshi’s great for making your own stories and we think it also offers a really unique experience, different for each individual player where free roaming AIs can collide outside of a linear script – see our top favourite stories here: lofigames.com/player-stories.”

“We want to thank all our fans, supporters and volunteers who never gave up on us during this lengthy development. We simply couldn’t have done it without them. Even though we can’t respond to every heartfelt message we receive from our supporters, they really have touched us and motivated us to make something great.”

What is Kenshi?

  • Open-ended sandbox RPG – Totally freeform gameplay with no linear story and no level requirements to unlock new items and features. Be good, be evil, be a businessman, be a thief, live in a town, live in the desert, travel alone, travel in hordes, build a fortress, raze a city – Kenshi will never seek to limit you or restrict your personal play style.
  • The largest RPG world since Daggerfall – With no gated zones and a seamless map stretching over 870 square kilometres.
  • Mods to customise your characters and surroundings – A highly active player community already with over 1,500 fan-made mods to personalise your playthrough.
  • Detailed squad-based gameplay – Create, recruit and develop multi-character squads and factions from scratch.
  • Build a base to house your squad – Research new technologies, upgrade your defences and craft new gear.
  • Unashamedly hardcore – Harsh and unforgiving game world of constant challenge and reward. There are no ‘hero’ characters with artificially stronger stats.
  • Absolutely no level-scaling – The world does not level up with you and shops don’t change their items depending on your level.
  • Realistic medical system brings surprising survival gameplay – Damage location matters (leg injuries slow you down, arm injuries limit ability to fight), injuries take time to heal, no magical health potions exist and severed limbs need prosthetic replacements.
  • Aid or oppose the various factions in the world – Form alliances or start wars. Strive for the strength and wealth necessary to survive in the harsh desert.

Kenshi is available to purchase globally on Steam today ($29.99 / £22.99 / €26.99 / ¥3500). Users who supported the game in Early Access will be upgraded to the full retail version for no extra charge.

About Lo-Fi Games – Kenshi’s Development Story
Chris Hunt, founder of Lo-Fi Games, spent his early 20s working as a game programmer but hated working on small cash-cow projects which felt like a waste of time. So he left, and spent the next 12 years working on Kenshi. During daylight hours Chris worked on the game full-time, then as the sun went down drove a windowless car to start his night shift as a security guard.

After being Greenlit on Steam’s Early Access in 2013, Kenshi raised enough money to fund a small team. Hiring an unlikely ensemble including a Bollywood TV extra, a unicycling hockey player and an ex-circus performer who refuses to wear shoes, development of Kenshi ramped up considerably.

Instead of shuffling and drawing each card, all cards will be available at any time in a match to allow for deeply strategic and reactive skirmishes.

Both champion and action cards will be able to earn experience and Favor respectively. These resources enable players to upgrade their cards. Champions will earn item and ability upgrade slots, so they can be customized to make the perfect deck. Powering up action cards will unlock specializations, opening up even more possibilities. Faction choices that offer new abilities will further empower players to make cards their own.

Each of the 262 playable cards will feature gorgeous art, showing off Malkyrs’ high fantasy universe. All cards will be equipped with an RFID that can be scanned using the NFC-enabled Joy-Con controllers. All levels and even the name players choose will be stored in the RFID, so trading a physical card with another player means handing over an entire journey, like swapping heroic tales over a campfire. These upgrades will work across all platforms, including the PC and Mac builds, making cross-play battles a reality.

Malkyrs’ Kickstarter, which launched Monday and funded in a few short hours, aims to bring the game to new markets, both around the world and on new platforms. With over two million PC matches already played in France, Malkyrs’ huge fanbase is ready for more competitors to join the fray.

“By listening to our players, Malkyrs is getting stronger each passing day,” said Paul Vaudandaine, co-founder of Malkyrs Studio. “The addition of the Switch audience, who we believe will love the physical-to-digital nature of our cards, can only make our game even better.”

Malkyrs: The Interactive Card Game will be available on Nintendo Switch in English and French in Q3 2019, and is available now on PC and Mac.

About Malkyrs Studio
Starting with an idea for a card game, Paul and Kevin settled on the lore and rules of Malkyrs long before it even had a name. Their friends Patrick and Jules came up with the idea to use NFC technology to do justice to the physical and virtual card game idea. With a nostalgic love for Yu-Gi-Oh, the team set about creating a world and its legendary inhabitants including the Malkyrs, the gods of their own specially created universe.

The cards used in Malkyrs: The Interactive Card Game are waterproof, beer-proof, can survive a 6-story fall, forgotten and frozen in water overnight, and sustain being made into temporary road-kill. However, due to one unfortunate incident, it has been discovered that the cards are not resistant to microwaves.

UBISOFT’S THE CREW® 2 SECOND FREE MAJOR UPDATE,  DEMOLITION DERBY IS NOW AVAILABLE

UBISOFT’S THE CREW®SECOND FREE MAJOR UPDATE,  DEMOLITION DERBY IS NOW AVAILABLE

SAN FRANCISCO – December 5, 2018 – Today, Ubisoft announced that Demolition Derby, the second free update brought to Ubisoft’s open world motorsports game, The Crew® 2, is now available on PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, the Xbox One family of devices including Xbox One X and Windows PC.

The Demolition Derby update introduces a new Demolition Derby discipline where competitors must try to earn a top-three spot by getting the highest score in a limited amount of time. Two new arenas have been built to house the destruction. The Bonneville Salt Flat where players will earn points by crushing their opponents’ cars while avoiding obstacles like being smashed by an elevator, a spring-loaded boxing glove or other cars. And a new circuit built in the heart of the Tucson aircraft cemetery, where players will be able to push their opponents off of the track for even more devastation. In addition to the Demolition Derby discipline, the update brings the highly anticipated PvP mode to The Crew 2. Starting at the Rookie level, up to eight players can compete against each other in a variety of disciplines, such as Street Racing and Motocross, in a constantly renewed selection of events across the US map. Players eager to shift the competition into top gear can enter in the in-game PvP leagues for higher stakes and rewards.

Four new demolition derby cars will be included in the update and for the first time in The Crew 2, whether in a specific mode or in freedrive, the demolition derby cars will be completely destructible.

The update will also feature more high-octane contests, including exclusive Drift, Alpha Grand Prix and Rally Cross challenges as well as additional skills and in-game activities.

As part of The Crew 2’s monthly vehicle drop, the Extra 330SC air race plane and the Rattlesnake Fender Demolition Derby car are available for season pass owners. All other players will have access to these vehicles starting December 12.

The release of Demolition Derby is the next step in the The Crew 2 post-launch development schedule, and the team is committed to continue introducing ample new content through regular updates in the months ahead. September saw the release of the first major free update, Gator Rush and the Hovercraft discipline. For more information on The Crew 2 post-launch plans, please visit: www.thecrewgame.com/postlaunch
