Kokkoku: Complete Collection Review

Kokkoku: Complete Collection

Studio: Geno Studio
Publisher: Sentai Filmworks
Format: DVD, Blu-ray (Reviewed)
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $69.98 – Available Here

Overview

A lot can happen over the course of a single day but what if there was a way to make sure that you would never have to worry about missing a deadline or special event. Well while a few anime series have explored the concept of time manipulation and some characters even can use it as a special ability, what about a series that sets itself almost entirely in frozen time? That anime happens to be Kokkoku and now that the complete series has been released in English from Sentai Filmworks, is the series worth your time?

Story

Juri Yukawa may be freshly graduated from college but her career prospects are incredibly low as she once again fails a job interview. Forced to return home to her middle class family that is struggling to stay afloat due to a lackadaisical older brother that refuses to work named Tsubasa, a laid off father Takafumi, a nephew named Makoto that is being raised by her single older sister, and a wise Grandfather. This dysfunctional family creates a fairly interesting dynamic since, out of the entire group that is shown, Juri appears to be the most put together of the group outside of the Grandfather as she handles all of the tasks around the house. At least she is until the older brother Tsubasa is tasked with picking up her nephew Makoto from school.

After picking up the young child the pair find themselves kidnapped and held for ransom by a group calling themselves the Genuine Love Society. While the kidnappers demand that the family pay a sizable, but just within their bounds, sum of money for the safety of the pair, they must do so within a half hour or both Tsubasa and the young Makoto will be killed. After a bit of infighting Grandfather pulls out a magical stone that he uses to transport Juri, Takafumi, and himself into a Stasis world. In Stasis all time is frozen except for those who have specters residing within them and through the use of the stone Grandfather manages to secure the safety of these three as they move to the location to rescue their family.

Unfortunately things quickly take a turn for the worse as the three find themselves accosted by others that are able to move within Stasis. Unable to save their kidnapped family and having to leave her father behind, Juri and Grandfather escape from the impossible situation only to find that the Stasis world is far more dangerous than one may think and that the leader of the Genuine Love Society is willing to do anything to reach his goal of obtaining Juri’s family’s secret for himself.

Kokkoku is something of a strange series as it struggles heavily with pacing which is ironic considering the series takes place during frozen time. The first quarter of the season works incredibly well as viewers see how Juri’s family interacts with one another and learns bits and pieces about the Stasis world through both serious moments that involve the protectors of the area, Handlers, and comedic moments that focus more on how one could possibly explain the physics behind the magic. In fact the series is truly at its strongest when it focuses on Juri’s family dynamics as many of the characters get a chance to shine in some form and show some growth, outside of a certain character that is relegated to being a buffoon, while Juri herself proves herself as a strong female lead willing to put herself at risk if it means keeping her family safe.

However past this point Kokkoku finds itself wallowing in half-explored story elements, bits of development for side characters that tend to go nowhere beyond showing the dangers of the Stasis world, and an incredibly weak motivation for the main antagonist of the series. Multiple episodes can pass with characters talking through their plans, making an attempt or succeeding at it, only for it to either end up meaningless or simply run down the clock. In fact viewers will be happy that they can watch this series all in one sitting since the numerous cliffhangers that happen between episodes that result in nothing would be incredibly frustrating if watched at a weekly basis.

That isn’t to say that Kokkoku is a bad series as it does explore some interesting moral questions especially since it places the characters in a world where, outside of attempting to murder someone frozen in time, there are few consequences to someone’s actions. This type of question is presented numerous times throughout the series with the ending truly pushing the limits of just how well a person can mentally withstand being in a world where all time is frozen. Between this moral quandary and the great interactions between the members of Juri’s family Kokkoku does feel like a strong show at times but thanks to the aforementioned horrible pacing that sees multiple episodes pass with little happening, a villain whose motivation that is hard to take serious, and so many vague handwavings about elements of the Stasis world, it truly does struggle, especially since the finale pulls out an incredibly contrived trump card to bring the story to a close.

Visuals

The animation studio handling Kokkoku is a rather fresh one as it has only handled a single OVA prior to this series and the company really wants to emphasize themselves as every episode features a short clip advertising themselves at the start. The series features a more realistic looking color pallette outside of a few of the magical sci-fi elements that appear from time to time and it is worth noting that there are some spectacular looking scenes featuring the Handlers, but there are also a number of issues with the actual character designs.

For the most part the characters and the environments are handled decently but their faces are often rather awful looking, especially in later episodes. Oddly enough it is worth noting that while the ending sequence does feature quite a bit of fan-service featuring the few female characters but the series itself is tame in this regard.

Audio

With this release of Kokkoku Sentai Filmworks has created a fresh English dub for the series alongside the original Japanese voice track. The English voice cast does an incredible job for most of the characters with Juri’s voice actress fitting her fluctuating emotional state quite well. Those who prefer the Japanese voice track will find that some of the older characters are handled better by that group of voice actors.

The soundtrack for the series is decent enough with a nice mix of background music accompanying some of the more serious scenes. The opening sequence theme “Flashback” is actually quite catchy and matches the animation very well while the ending theme “Asayake to Nettaigyo” also sounds decent but, as mentioned before, is accompanied by an odd choice of fan-service shots.

Extras

The only bonus features offered in the English release of Kokkoku are clean versions of the opening animations, a clean closing animation, promos from the original Japanese release, and trailers for other releases from Sentai Filmworks.

Overall

Kokkoku‘s premise sets the series’ up for a strong start and while it makes great use of that beginning to build up Juri and some of her family as strong characters and introduce the Stasis world, it really begins to falter from then on. With sci-fi fantasy elements that feel barely touched upon, numerous meaningless events, and a poorly written villain the series’ pacing becomes its biggest fault leading to a series that starts out intriguing but will likely only hold a viewer’s attention thanks to the strong-willed Juri and to see how her the rest of the family can make it through this ordeal.

Explore Atlantis in the Second Episodic Post-Launch Story Arc from the Biggest and Most Ambitious Post-Launch Plan Ever for Assassin’s Creed

Sydney, Australia — April 17, 2019 — Today, Ubisoft announced the release dates for the episodes of the second post-launch story arc of Assassin’s Creed® Odyssey, The Fate of Atlantis. The first episode, Fields of Elysium, will release April 23 across all available platforms. Throughout Fields of Elysium and the following two episodes, players will continue their Odyssey in the Greek afterlife to uncover the great mysteries that lie within the ancient realms of the gods.

As the story of Fields of Elysium unfolds, players will traverse the paradise of Elysium, an otherworldly realm of great beauty, to reveal its sinister secrets all while facing against the might of the Isu. Players will encounter both new factions and familiar characters, and acquire new legendary weapons and gear.

Fields of Elysium will also introduce all-new Ability enhancements, which modify existing abilities to alter their function, giving players the opportunity to further fine-tune their playstyles. Ability enhancements are divided into each branch of the skill tree, Hunter, Warrior and Assassin, and several will be introduced in each episode, starting with Ares Bull Charge, Might of Artemis, Kronos Time Warp and Ares Madness in Fields of Elysium.

Following the first story arc, Legacy of the First Blade, The Fate of Atlantis will see our hero confront deities, encounter terrifying beasts of myth, and forge new bonds with a colourful cast of characters. After Fields of Elysium releases on April 23, the second episode, Torment of Hades, and the third episode, Judgment of Atlantis, will complete the second story arc mid-2019 on all available platforms.

The Assassin’s Creed Odyssey post-launch plan is the biggest and most ambitious in the franchise, and Season Pass owners will be able to access two major episodic storylines, Legacy of the First Blade and The Fate of Atlantis. Players can dive into new episodes as they premiere, or experience the epic adventures in their entirety once all episodes are available. The Season Pass also includes Assassin’s Creed® III Remastered and Assassin’s Creed® Liberation Remastered, which released for the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, the Xbox One family of devices including Xbox One X and Windows PC on March 29, 2019.

In order to play The Fate of Atlantis, players will have two different options:

  • Following the main game, players will have to complete the questline Between Two Worlds, the mythological main game story arc, and Heir of Memories, the Lost Tales of Greece questline that is available after completing the former questline. Finally, they must have reached character level 28 or above.
  • Otherwise, players will be able to use a shortcut created specifically for those who would like to play The Fate of Atlantis and who do not fulfill all the above conditions. Thanks to this shortcut, players will enter Greece level 52 with preset Abilities and resources enabling them to start their adventure into the afterlife with the Lost Tales of Greece questline Heir of Memories. They will also have the opportunity to choose their hero. However, contrary to the previous option – players’ progression using the shortcut will not carry over to the main game save, and they will not be able to obtain achievements.

FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL IN PUBG MOBILE’S DARKEST NIGHT MODE, AVAILABLE TODAY

FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL IN PUBG MOBILE’S DARKEST NIGHT MODE, AVAILABLE TODAY

Blockbuster mobile game drops new zombie game mode for free on App Store and Google Play

LOS ANGELES – April 16, 2019 – Tencent Games and PUBG Corporation released the full version 0.12.0 content update today for PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS MOBILE (PUBG MOBILE). As a key part of the update, players can dive into Darkest Night where they must stay alive until dawn, fighting off zombies. Spectator mode, updates to Survive Till Dawn gameplay and other tweaks are also part of the free update available on the App Store and Google Play.

Darkest Night is an all-new game type where players must spend one night fending off waves of zombie enemies and fight to stay alive. Rather than parachuting in, players are placed randomly on the map to face zombie hordes during each of the three foggy nights. There is no single chicken dinner to earn this time and players may form an alliance to help each other to survive when necessary, unless the alliance decides turns on each other.

In late 2018, Tencent Games, PUBG Corporation and Capcom joined forces to bring the items of Resident Evil 2 into PUBG MOBILE through the terrifying Survive Till Dawn mode. The 0.12.0 update revamps this mode by adding new weapons, jumping zombies, zombie dogs, gameplay fixes and more.

Full details for the 0.12.0 content update include:

  • Darkest Night – Players can team up or go solo to survive a night of undead invasion and toxic gas until evacuation at sunrise; This new mode also comes with a passive skill for every player. Understanding these skills will be the key to staying alive in this long night.
  • Survive Till Dawn 2 – The PUBG MOBILE x Resident Evil 2 survival game mode is revamped with new gruesome ghouls and never-before-seen ballistic weaponry for even more nightmarish gameplay.

– Stun Grenades now also stun zombies

– Added Liquid Nitrogen Grenades to freeze enemies and reduce their movement speed

– Added jumping zombies and zombie dogs

– Some zombies can now climb over low walls or onto roofs

– Added RPG-7 and Jungle Style Magazines

– Flamethrowers now deal more damage

– M134 handling has been tuned

– Players will gain affixes that grant certain buffs

– Zombies now move slower after being hit by firearms

– Added Survive Till Dawn quick chat messages to Default and Classic voice packs

– Daily missions can now be completed in Survive Till Dawn

  • Spectator Mode – Players can observe the action live by spectating the matches of their friends, Crew and Clan members.
  • Crosshair Modifications – Red dot, holographic, 2x scope and 3x scopes can be adjusted to different colors, along with multiple shape variations of the red dot reticle.
  • Popularity has been added to Spaces – Players can now show their support by giving LIKEs to one another, and become Partners with friends that have 400 Synergy or more. Partners will appear in each other’s Spaces.
  • Event mode replaced by EvoGround – Survive Till Dawn is now under this mode. And more new modes will be added in the future.

The version 0.12.0 update arrives just weeks after Tencent Games and PUBG Corporation announced the PUBG MOBILE Club Open 2019, the game’s biggest global esports venture ever with over $2.5 million in prize pool earnings. Vivo, the smart phone company, is the official title sponsor of the PMCO 2019, providing smartphones to players and fans during both splits. The Spring Split Global Finals will take place in Germany this July. With more than 200 million downloads and 30 million daily players, PUBG MOBILE continues to grow as one of the world’s most trending mobile games. Stay tuned for more news regarding PUBG MOBILE’s latest updates and emergence into the world of esports.

PUBG MOBILE is available to download for free on the App Store and Google Play

ABOUT PUBG MOBILE

PUBG MOBILE is based on PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS, the phenomenon that took the world of interactive entertainment by storm in 2017. My Time at Portia is inspired by the the likes of Harvest Moon, Dark Cloud 2, and Animal Crossing. Octopath Traveler Announced for PC

It’s a great day for PC gamers as Square Enix announced they are bringing their highly regarded JRPG Octopath Traveler to PC on June 7. Previously a Switch exclusive, Octopath Traveler will be a Steam exclusive like Square Enix’s other PC titles.

No word on what sort of changes and optimizations will be done for the PC version, but English and Japanese voice overs will be available along with text in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese. The price has yet to be announced on Steam.

Octopath Traveler is a JRPG from Square Enix and Acquire. The game mixes traditional 2D sprites with 3D environments to create a visually distinct twist on an old standard. The game follows eight characters travelling across Orsterra, each with their own distinct story that can be played in any order.

Funcom Signals Continued Development on Conan Exiles with Year 2 Season Pass

Funcom committed to at least another year of development on their open world survival game Conan Exiles with the Year 2 Season Pass announcement. The Season Pass will consist of four core DLC packs that will launch throughout 2019.

The first of the four DLC packs released today alongside the announcement. Like previous Conan Exiles DLCs, the “Treasures of Turan Pack” consist of cosmetic items that have no impact on the overall structure of the game. The DLC offers building pieces, pet skins, placeable items, and war paints based on the eastern kingdom of Turan. The DLC also comes with Turan weapons and armour that are statistically equivalent to existing items in game.

“Treasures of Turan Pack” is available now on PC and PlayStation 4, and the Xbox One release is coming soon. It is priced at $9.99 USD/$14.50 AUD on Steam. The Year 2 Season Pass is available now for $29.99 USD/$43.45 AUD.

EA Promises a Single-Player Game Without Lootboxes and Microtransactions

It seems a bit late for April Fools’ joke but according to Electronic Arts, it’s definitely real. We only have one tweet to go with and it’s official as it can be.

Twitter account for EA Star Wars games said yesterday that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will contain “no microtransactions. No loot boxes. And no, we won’t be adding them. A single-player Star Wars story for those of you who are ready to become a Jedi”.

Those are some pretty strong but welcoming promises. I’ll assume that a reason for such turnaround might be a lukewarm reception of Star Wars Battlefront II. Or maybe it’s just EA turning a new leaf with their aggressive approach to loot boxes, microtransactions, and DLC. Miracles can happen sometimes. A strict single-player story gives me some hope (A New Hope, even?) but in any case, I’ll all have to wait until November 15th to play it on PC.

EA AND RESPAWN ANNOUNCE STAR WARS JEDI: FALLEN ORDERTM WILL LAUNCH NOVEMBER 15, 2019

EA AND RESPAWN ANNOUNCE STAR WARS JEDI: FALLEN ORDERTM WILL LAUNCH NOVEMBER 15, 2019

Play as a Jedi Padawan on the Run After the Events of Star WarsTM: Revenge of the SithTM

Australia – April 14, 2019 – During a panel today at Star Wars™ Celebration in Chicago, Respawn Entertainment, a studio of Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:EA), announced that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, a new third-person action adventure game, will launch on November 15, 2019 on Xbox One, PlayStation®4 and PC via Origin. The game will feature an authentic story set shortly after the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith ™, when the Jedi have fallen. Fans will play as a young Padawan named Cal Kestis, brought to life by Cameron Monaghan (Shameless, Gotham), who has survived Order 66, the Emperor’s secret decree to eliminate all Jedi. Players must pick up the pieces of Cal’s shattered past to complete his training and master the art of the iconic lightsaber – all while staying one step ahead of the Empire and its deadly Inquisitors.

“Many Star Wars fans, ourselves included, are really interested in the dark times, so we wanted to explore that mysterious, dangerous period,” said Stig Asmussen, Game Director, Respawn Entertainment. “The team at Lucasfilm have been amazing collaborators, helping us explore and further develop this part of the timeline where the Empire is at the height of its power and any remaining Jedi are in hiding. Within this narrative, we’ve crafted a game with intense, yet thoughtful and fun melee combat using the lightsaber and Force powers, allowing anyone to fulfill their Jedi fantasy.”

“When Respawn approached us with the idea for this game, we were immediately supportive. A single player, story-driven title in the Star Wars universe was exactly what we were looking for, and we know the fans have been eager for one, as well,” said Steve Blank, Director, Franchise Content & Strategy, Lucasfilm Story Group. “Focusing on Cal stepping back into the shoes of a Jedi post Order 66 opens up a lot of gameplay opportunities and rich story threads to develop for this new character and his backstory.”

Players will meet Cal on Bracca, a brand-new Star Wars planet and one of several new locations introduced in the game. Cal is hiding from the Empire in plain sight but is forced to go on the run when he exposes his Force powers. Along the way, Cal will make new friends, like his mysterious companion Cere, as well as run into some familiar faces, all while being accompanied by his faithful droid BD-1. Cal’s flight from the Empire is made even more dangerous as he is being pursued by the Second Sister, one of the Empire’s elite Inquisitors, who seeks to hunt Cal down and extinguish this surviving Jedi. Assisting the Second Sister are the terrifying Purge Troopers, special Imperial forces trained to seek out Jedi and aid the Inquisitors in their dastardly work.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is designed with gameplay as a top priority in order to deliver the kind of intense Star Wars lightsaber battles that are seen in the films. Brought to life by Respawn, a studio known for high-quality games that are both visually beautiful and technically masterful, players will use their Jedi training to create different melee combinations with an innovative lightsaber combat system and Force abilities. Players will also use traversal and other platforming abilities to strategically overcome opponents and solve puzzles in their path across this galaxy-spanning adventure. Star Wars fans will recognise iconic locations, weapons, gear, and enemies, while also meeting a roster of fresh characters, locations, creatures, droids and adversaries new to Star Wars.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is available now for pre-order, and will offer fans unique cosmetic content. For more details, visit StarWarsJediFallenOrder.com.
