EarthNight Lands on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Steam on Dec. 3

EarthNight Lands on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Steam on Dec. 3

PHILADELPHIA – Oct. 28, 2019 – EarthNight, the hand-drawn action platformer set during the dragon apocalypse and featured in Nintendo’s Indie World presentation earlier this year, makes the jump to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam for Windows PC and Mac on Dec. 3, 2019.

Cleaversoft‘s console and PC debut casts Stanley and Sydney as humanity’s last hope. Ever since dragons overtook Earth, mankind has lived in exile on space colonies orbiting the planet. Despite being faced with seemingly insurmountable odds, the unlikely duo—a sword-wielding freelance photographer and a young student blessed with ethereal superpowers—take it upon themselves to reclaim their home by skydiving through Earth’s atmosphere and striking back against the monsters below.

The two heroes approach their dragon-slaying mission with drastically different tactics. Stanley’s powerful legs allow him to make both high jumps and long leaps, while Sydney favors agility by making use of an air dash and double jump ability. Both heroes wield their bespoke skills to overcome hostile environments and push towards the vulnerable heads of their scaled serpentine foes.

Each EarthNight level features procedurally-generated dragons with multiple exits and secrets rewarding exploration. Slaying dragons grants Sydney and Stanley rewards like dragon eggs and other mysterious objects that unlock powerful upgrades. With the right tools, the duo can topple even the toughest opponents while moving through stages at breakneck speeds.

Boasting more than 10,000-plus frames of painstakingly-crafted animation, EarthNight’s hand-drawn visuals come from Paul “Mathattan” Davey. Paul “Chipocrite” Weinstein composed the title’s rocking soundtrack, infusing chiptunes created on Gameboy Hardware with real modern instrumentation. The OST is now available on Bandcamp, Apple Music, and Spotify.

EarthNight represents seven years of hard work from a collective of talented artists and the final product is something we’re immensely proud to share with everyone,” said Rich Siegel, founder of Cleaversoft. “We hope that Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam players are as excited to hurtle back to Earth and slay dragons as we are to watch them.”

EarthNight launches on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam for Windows PC and Mac on Dec. 3, 2019 for $14.99 / €13.99 / £12.59 / $21.00 AUD. The game is currently available via the Apple Arcade subscription service for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and Mac. The new ‘Warriors of the Sky’ team consists of four original Super Heroes and will join Luna Snow and Crescent & Io as the latest Marvel original characters created for MARVEL Future Fight.

“We are excited to introduce this original team, Warriors of the Sky, to MARVEL Future Fight fans and expand on the continually growing, wide variety of character choices in the game,” said Danny Koo, Senior Producer for Marvel Games. “Warriors of the Sky is about teamwork. Each of the brand new characters has their own unique powers and different backstories for players to learn and explore. The new Warriors of the Sky team includes:

  • Blue Dragon – Defending the East, Blue Dragon possesses the ability to transform whatever she touches into a draconic weapon. With her heirloom spear, whip in hand, this child of Vietnamese noble family leads the Warriors of the Sky with her protective spirit and wise judgment through any challenge they may encounter.
  • Sun Bird – Soaring into battle as guardian of the South, the searing Sun Bird provides healing support for the Warriors of the Sky. • Shadow Shell – Strategizing in the North, Shadow Shell disables enemies from afar and defends her teammates with her highly advanced rifle and Ba Gua energy shield. PUBG MOBILE UNVEILS NEW ANTI-CHEAT DETECTION SYSTEM TO IDENTIFY AND BAN IN-GAME CHEATERS

World’s most popular mobile game receives new methods for promoting fair gameplay

LOS ANGELES – Oct. 28, 2019 – Since PUBG MOBILE’s launch in 2018, the security team have enforced a zero-tolerance policy towards in-game cheating to create a fair and healthy gaming environment. Additionally, the security team utilizes game observation to fairly monitor players who have been reported through the game’s system to ensure only players using additional software or other means of hacking and cheating to deter from the game’s environment are banned. The team can efficiently observe gameplay to differentiate between the use of unfair software and player skill as well as unusual game occurrences due to lag or packet loss.

“We want players to know that we are 100% committed to providing a fair gameplay experience for everyone. SaidVincent Wang, General Manager of Global Publishing Department from Tencent Games “We take enormous pride in the game we work on every day, and cheaters cheapen all of our work. We’re doing everything possible to keep cheaters out of our game as much as possible, and hundreds of team members are dedicated to this task.”

In a commitment to swiftly deal with players utilizing hacking and cheating software, PUBG MOBILE developers are able to enforce player bans in real-time. By combining detection software, observation, and player reporting the developers are able to efficiently and swiftly remove cheaters even mid-match so as to maintain a positive gaming experience for players.

EA Pretty Much Confirms That They Are Coming Back to Steam

0

Well, here is something that equally amazing as it is shocking. The end of Valve’s relationship with Electronic Arts was like a bad breakup that both parties refuse to talk about. After Origin took off, EA decided to take down most of its games from Steam and transfer it to Origin, as well as making their upcoming releases exclusive to that client.

However, something strange started happening in the past few days. TheNerdMag first reported some strange sightings of Dragon Age II receiving database updates on Steam (the game was briefly there before EA decided to remove it) and The Saboteur being played by someone there. What’s interesting about The Saboteur is that it was never on Steam to begin with, but according to steam.db, the database entry is there. And this would all stay in the realm of unreliable rumors until EA decided to tweet something pretty interesting two days ago.

Something is steaming from the EA branded cup. Steam-ing. G-get it? As far as I know, EA is not the kind to tweet random stuff without any context, so this could be a pretty clear hint that some of their PC games (if not most) might come back to Steam. Please EA, don’t let this be some strange advertising for a new line of EA coffee mugs, I would pay good money to play Titanfall games and Mass Effect 3 on Steam. For now, I keep my fingers crossed and I’ll keep you updated for more development regarding this matter.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III Review

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III

Developer: Nihon Falcom
Publisher: NIS America
Platform: PlayStation 4
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $59.99 USD – Available Here $89.95 AUD – Available Here

Overview

When a fanbase follows a series for many years they become worried about any small changes that may come their way and with The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III more than a few big changes were on the way. Not only was there a three year wait instead of the usual one year to see the game be released in the West for the first time on the PlayStation 4, but it also was coming at the hands of a completely different publisher. It wasn’t just changes outside of the game that fans had to worry about as The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III comes off of a major story arc’s conclusion in the previous game and now features more than a few adjustments as a result. With so much change to contend with, is Nihon Falcom’s deft hand at development still as strong as ever?

Story

Being the third game in a series that itself takes place in a larger franchise gives The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III a fairly high barrier to entry but perhaps due to its nature of being the first entry developed for the PlayStation 4 the game also happens to feature an extensive “story so far” that covers not only the events that took place over the course of the first two games but also character biographies and explanations about various pieces of world history. That being said, even with this fairly in-depth effort to keep new players from being lost at entry this recap mostly works best as a refresher course for longtime fans than anything else and even then those who haven’t played other games in The Legend of Heroes franchise will still be missing out on a few elements so be wary of that.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III takes place a year and a half after the events of the previous game that saw the land immersed in a civil war that finally came to a conclusion. While the rest of Class VII chose to graduate from Thors Military Academy early and chase after their own goals, Rean Schwarzer not only stayed through as a student but has now begun working as a teacher at the newly established Thors Military Academy Branch Campus. As a teacher Rean begins instructing a brand new Class VII featuring an almost entirely new cast of characters with only one familiar face being among his pupils. All is not well however as political unrest continues and although the flames of war have faded the embers are ready to reignite across the land.

Since so much worldbuilding has taken place over the course of the first two entries in the series The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III doesn’t take its time getting the narrative rolling and this quick start works quite well with the fact that the writers continue to show their mastery over crafting an engrossing storyline that will keep players wanting to push forward to see what happens next, though fans should be prepared for a storyline that is darker in nature even compared to the events of the second game. It is also worth noting that another certain aspect from the first game, alongside the school-life aesthetic, in the series has returned in this story and it happens to be the fact that a massive cliffhanger awaits those who reach the lengthy storyline and although the fourth entry has already been released in Japan, fans will be left waiting until the localization to see just how things play out this time.

Now it is worth noting that Nihon Falcom took a fairly large risk here as swapping out familiar characters that fans have grown attached to over the course of the last two games is quite jarring, it speaks volumes about the writers’ skill that the new members of Class VII quickly fall into place and feel like characters we’ve known for quite some time. This is partially thanks to the fact that the class itself is smaller and allows for each member of the class to get a little extra time to shine but also thanks to how well they integrate with the story as a whole while rarely overshadowing important reunions with old members of Class VII and various other interactions with returning characters, creating an organic introduction of quite a few new characters that is rare when a series is already on its third entry.

It is interesting to note that the skill of the original Japanese writers only shines through thanks to how adept the localization team at NIS America has been with this translation. Generally this wouldn’t even be worth mentioning unless there were grammatical errors or rampant misspellings but given the fact that the series has transitioned publishers and translators midway through, it is easy to say that fans of the series should not be concerned about the new localization team as the dialogue still retains the same feeling as the original two games.

Gameplay

In an interesting fashion The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III manages to recapture a bit of what the first game in the series had as it places players once again in a school campus. Here players will find very similar gameplay elements that see them interacting with their Class VII students, traveling around campus and having free time while also being able to venture into a dungeon to train. Even the field exercises aspect to drive the story makes a return making the game feel very familiar to the first but considering the new cast, this works well as a core structure.

For the most part combat in the game remains very similar to before as players will have four party members battling against enemies in a turn based system. The most immediate change that fans will notice is that the various battle commands now make use of the D-pad and face buttons for quicker access. These include regular attacks, using an item, moving around the battlefield for positioning, and of course the returning Arts, which is magic that takes time to cast, and Crafts that are immediate but vary depending on what the unit has equipped, as well as the new Brave Order system.

Brave Orders make use of “Brave Points,” that are also used to perform linked attacks, to issue status boosting buffs that vary depending on the character issuing the order. These range from defense boosts to immediate spell casting and can play a large role in how some more difficult fights play out. Players also can now inflict “Break” status to enemies by repeatedly attacking them with everything they have with broken enemies receiving higher damage for a time.

Another nice little tweak comes in the form of the Divine Knight and Panzer Soldat mech battles. While these fights primarily only featured single unit fights players will now find that they will be having at least two giant mechs fighting on their side at any time. This helps make these already intense looking battles even better. For those who want things a bit speedier, there is also a “turbo” mechanic that will speed up the pace of combat and cutscenes that play when a character uses a special move are also skippable. Along those same lines the game also features five different difficulty options to keep it accessible to those who may be rusty or unfamiliar with the game’s mechanics as they range from being incredibly easy to incredibly hard, though longtime fans will likely want to begin on hard as normal plays a bit too easy.

Outside of the standard story progression players will find that The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III still has plenty of various side tasks that they can sink time into. This includes a deck-building card game called Vantage Masters that allows players to challenge most NPCs to card battles, a number of other smaller mini-games, and of course plenty of side quests that can offer some surprisingly enjoyable story developments as well as worthwhile rewards.

Visuals & Audio

With The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III marking the first entry in the series developed solely for the PlayStation 4 the game has seen a solid jump in presentation and ends up looking fairly good as a whole. There is some solid variety in the places that players will be traveling with most of these areas also appearing larger in size compared to previous entries and the various character models are more impressive looking than before, especially when it comes to some of the flashy moves that can be performed in battle. That being said, don’t expect too much of a significant jump here compared to other JRPGs that have made their way to the console.

NIS America has put quite a bit of effort in making sure that nearly all of the original English voice actors have reprised their roles in the series and they continue to impress in their roles here though if players choose, there is the original Japanese voice track as an option. As far as the soundtrack goes, the series continues to be impressive as there are a number of great pieces of background music that vary throughout the game while exploring and entering combat.

Overall

Fans of the series were likely a bit worried about just how The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III would turn out thanks to the numerous changes within the game and publisher but thankfully those worries can be put to rest. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III‘s English release lives up to the series’ quality so far and excels in telling a lengthy gripping storyline filled with plenty of side-content and a slightly more refined combat system. It may not make the most of its transition to the PlayStation 4 and the wait until the fourth game is released may be long, but this third entry in the series does not disappoint.

The Alliance Alive HD Remastered Review

The Alliance Alive HD Remastered

Developer: Cattle Call
Publisher: NIS America
Platforms: Nintendo Switch (Reviewed), PC, PlayStation 4
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $49.99 USD – Available Here $79.95 AUD – Available Here

Overview

Although the focus in 2018 saw many Nintendo 3DS games switching to the Switch, the little handheld still saw a steady supply of quality games well past the point where many people had already moved on. As such, The Alliance Alive which released in the West that year never really took off despite having some fairly significant names working as writers and developers from the SaGa and Suikoden series. Now Cattle Call and NIS America are giving fans RPG fans another chance to see what the game has to offer in the form of The Alliance Alive HD Remastered but is this chance worth taking?

Story

Thousands of years prior to the beginning of The Alliance Alive HD Remastered’s story the world was torn asunder when the Daemons invaded the human world and took over, separating the lands into separate regions divided by a magical barrier called “The Great Barrier.” With each region suffering various types of calamities, humanity became the lowest race in their world with Daemons ruling and beastmen taking up the middle position.

In interesting fashion, and true to the alliance aspect of the game’s name, players will find that rather than following any single hero or even one party, players will instead see the story jumps around between three groups of characters before eventually bringing everyone together to form an alliance. These characters run the entire gamut of races and provide some rather unique outlooks on the game’s story aspects as human characters may see certain things different from a girl that happens to be Daemon nobility.

While a bit of a slow burn at the start, players will quickly find this cast of characters growing on them, especially when they begin to interact with one another and we get a chance to see their personalities grow throughout the ever growing conflict. By giving nearly every character plenty of interesting bits of personality, and giving them time to actually grow throughout the game, their parts in the story feel more organic and it is much easier to become invested in the world and the story that unfolds. Unfortunately, given the fact that the game still features no voice over in any form, there are a number of important scenes that lack impact.

Gameplay

One of the first things that players will realize when playing The Alliance Alive HD Remastered is that it unfolds and plays a bit different from your standard RPG. Plenty of the standard features are there, with players being able to explore an over world and various locations teeming with enemies that, when touched, will drop them into a turn based battle. That is basically where these similarities come to an end however as players will find that their party members do not level up in a traditional manner. Instead, the focus is placed more on a character’s equipment and their various abilities.

While the end of combat will still reward the entire party with Talent points as well as the chance to, seemingly at random, gain a boost to their HP or SP, most advantages will occur while fighting. By attacking using certain weapon types a character can awaken to new skills that can allow them to use a special weapon skill or a magic spell and the more these abilities are used, the stronger they become or the higher chance they have at unlocking an additional ability. The randomness of this system can feel a little frustrating at times but it allows for players to adjust their party as needed without too much restriction. Along those same lines players can use aforementioned Talent points to unlock various passive bonuses that range from being overall boosts to just standard buffs for a character when using certain weapon types.

Players can form various formations with their party members, with there being three lines of placement that not only change how much damage they deal and receive but also how often they end up being attacked. These formations can be formed ahead of time and then swapped around during combat should the need arise, allowing for players to better adjust to the flow of battle by easily shifting their party members from Attacking, Guarding, or Supporting depending on what is needed at the time. Of course, this will take a bit of trial and error but don’t worry too much, The Alliance Alive HD Remastered often feels a bit too easy for its own good. One noteworthy feature that The Alliance Alive HD Remastered includes is the ability to speed up combat should the player wish. There are various levels of acceleration and these higher speeds make fighting against simpler enemies and grinding various boosts a much easier task than your standard RPG.

Another way players can gain various boosts comes in the form of Guilds. As players travel the lands they will be able to unlock and even establish various towers throughout the world and these guilds will provide various buffs to the player’s party as long as they are nearby. These can range from unlocking new techniques in battle to providing extra information about enemies. It is interesting to note that players can even recruit various NPCs to provide bonuses to guilds if they so choose.

Visuals & Audio

The biggest, and in fact pretty much the only difference between this release and the original happens to be the fact that the game has seen a solid improvement in the graphical department. Originally limited heavily by the handheld 3DS The Alliance Alive HD Remastered now is presented in a more visually pleasing manner that still shows its limitations but is certainly a solid improvement that breathes some new life into the game. It also helps that the character designs are quite solid and the various environments players will explore are incredibly varied in nature.

It is interesting to note that although the game continues to feature a solid soundtrack and decent enough sound effects, the game continues to suffer from the complete lack of voice acting. As mentioned before, the title does not include voice work in any form which was another limitation of its origins on the 3DS, and it is certainly disappointing to find that even with this re-release there was no effort to provide any voice work to the cast of characters.

Overall

The Alliance Alive HD Remastered is an interesting release as it still holds all of the charm and unique gameplay mechanics that it had when it was originally released but also doesn’t really offer too much else other than a better presentation compared to its 3DS counterpart. This means that those who have already played the original will likely find this release only worthwhile if they want to experience the story once again in a better looking manner though those who have yet to experience what The Alliance Alive HD Remastered has to offer will find a well-written storyline that features some unique gameplay mechanics that help set it apart from other RPGs of its kind.
