Elite Dangerous: Horizons Set to Land for All Commanders

Ground-breaking expansion to become free for Elite Dangerous players, bringing planetary landings, surface recon vehicles and more to all commanders on 27 October

Cambridge, UK – 29 September 2020. Frontier Developments plc (AIM: FDEV) announced today a major free update for the long running space epic, Elite Dangerous. The rich season of content Horizons will be folded into the base game for free for all Elite Dangerous owners on 27 October. Players will receive the complete Horizons experience via a free update to Elite Dangerous on PC, the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, and the Xbox One all-in-one games and entertainment system. Players who previously purchased Horizons will receive an exclusive Azure paint job compatible with all 41 ships currently in game.

Elite Dangerous: Horizons brings planetary landings to the Elite Dangerous galaxy, together with weapon crafting, ship-launched fighters and exhilarating multicrew co-op action. This premium expansion also allows players to put wheels on the ground and explore the galaxy up-close with the SRV Scarab ground vehicle, and access to many surface star ports and other locations.

2020 has been an intense year for Elite Dangerous’ fans, with the launch of the free Fleet Carriers update in June and the announce of a new multi-arc player driven narrative. These developments will culminate with the launch Elite Dangerous’ most ambitious expansion yet, Odyssey, which will see players able to combine space flight with first-person on foot gameplay on light atmospheric worlds in early 2021.

Cardpocalypse is set in elementary school in the 1990’s and is a single player RPG game about Jess, a 10 year old kid who manages to get everyone’s favorite card game banned on her first day at school. Players have an opportunity to custom build their own decks as they explore Dudsdale Elementary on a mission to defeat the invading mutants that have made it from the game over to the real world.

Steam users will now get the opportunity to build, trade, earn and wager as they manipulate their card decks, changing rules and permanently altering cards on their way to victory and becoming a Mega Mutant Power Pets master, the base game also comes with free DLC in the form of the rogue-like-inspired Gauntlet Mode.

In addition to its arrival on Steam, Cardpocalypse is also introducing a brand new DLC pack day and date. Out of Time brings a whole new standalone campaign to Cardpocalypse. The sinister Tock hurls Jess into a time loop, forcing her to relive the same school day over and over. Jess joins forces with Bloop, a brand new Champion card she discovers in her pocket, and together they set about escaping the time loop and saving the world. Cardpocalypse: Out of Time features the voice over talents of Irish actor Liam Cunningham, Game of Thrones, Dog Soldiers, War Horse.

After saving the land of Alwa following the events of the first game, Zoe is about to embark on her quest home. Using Zoe’s magic staff, players must negotiate the land of Alwa to solve perilous puzzles and fend off monsters. New items and a character upgrade system allows you to craft your individual playstyle, centred on an offensive, defensive or explorative skillset. Using magical upgrades, novel pathways can be found as you explore the nonlinear interconnected world by summoning blocks to climb on, bubbles to bounce off of, and lightning bolts to attack with. Quick reflexes are needed to traverse challenging rooms while avoiding booby traps and pitfalls. Along this adventure, you will meet all manner of interesting characters, comb through dangerous dungeons, and uncover incredible secrets as you attempt to save the land from extinction. 

Alwa’s Legacy honours the past with it’s thoroughly contemporary take on the metroidvania genre – full of puzzles to solve, dungeons to explore, magical items to acquire and ancient secrets to discover. Varnished with it’s 16-bit inspired visuals, mixing classical pixel art aesthetics with new visual flourishes such as a realistic lighting system and modern game design principles, Alwa’s Legacy offers a timeless play experience.

Update 4 includes a brand-new game mode called Online Leagues, formerly announced as Custom Pennant Race, featuring versatile cross-platform custom leagues.

“We’re excited to give our users a really interesting way to recruit friends into the game,” says Metalhead Software co-founder Scott Drader. “Between the cross-platform invite codes and the fact new users can get started in Online Leagues with just the trial or demo version of the game, we’re stoked for the potential this mode has to massively grow the SMB community.”

Online Leagues will allow users to set up custom leagues and invite friends from other platforms. Leagues can be setup and played casually via matchmaking within the league, or alternatively, competitive users can play according to their own externally coordinated schedule via a match-against-specific user feature.

The SMB3 demo/trial will allow users to join a league created by their friend provided the league is configured with default settings. Leagues with non-default settings will require all users to have the full version of the game. Unlike Pennant Race mode, Online Leagues with default settings will allow usage of all Standard teams, full visual customization, and user-controlled Ego settings.
Update 4 also features a fully revamped Watch Mode, offering users a new way to experience AI versus AI games with all-new user controllable cameras. The new cameras will allow the on-field action to be taken in from dynamic angles and viewpoints for an immersive visual experience.
 
Features in Online Leagues:
Online Leagues is a cross-platform mode where you and your friends can battle it out in your own leagues! With a wide range of customizable features, Online Leagues gives users a brand-new way to enjoy competitive or casual online play:
 

  • Use invite codes to set up private leagues to play cross-platform with friends.
  • Play in short-term or long-term seasons, with statistics tracked throughout the season.
  • Customize settings and rules, such as Ego (difficulty) level and game length.
  • Play with SMB3 standard teams or fully customized user teams.
  • Create large leagues – up to 32 players.
  • Queue for games against any opponent in the league, or queue against a specific user.

Give Us a Story Worth Sharing

The overall focus of the Untold Tales’ portfolio will be primarily single player games that have the ability to tell an intriguing story, be it in the game itself or through gameplay. Untold Tales has also set itself up to focus on only releasing a select handful of games a year that match this criteria and only for platforms that fit each title.

“Being selective and only focusing on 1 or 2 games at time ensures our devs are taken care of both during and after production and not feel like they’re just another name among 10 others we’re juggling. We also want them to feel they’re allowed to focus on putting their game out where they are wanted. Times have changed significantly in how best to put a game out and that also means some platforms are better than others for certain games. Lets Cool it with the Business BS

Much of the focus for Untold Tales will be to be a publisher who wants to “cut the crap” for both devs and players alike. From skewed publishing agreements, convoluted demands right through to vague communication and messaging to players – those are all out. Rather an approach that is fair and custom to each game will be in place while overall being data and community focused to ensure time, effort and resources are spent on doing things that actually benefit both the developer and the players. 

“Devs need to understand we don’t want the rights to your IP. We don’t want revenue shares where you end up screwed. And we’ll never expect you to release something that isn’t ready and just wrecks your studio’s reputation. Rather we’re going to have very open and transparent agreements, where a lot of our decisions will be based on data and community feedback and not some spray and pray mentality. As for players, except honest conversations, clear responses and no ludicrous 3 tiered pre-order campaigns with paid DLC waiting in the wings for a month later. We’ll ensure our games are supported post release as best as possible, be it with free updates or with bigger content if the dev team is onboard. The Hong Kong Massacre and Beautiful Desolation Join the Family

Untold Tales have already agreed to help bring The Hong Kong Massacre – the stylish slow-motion manipulation top down shooter by Swedish devs VRESKI – to the Nintendo Switch. This will follow with the atmospheric and twisted Beautiful Desolation – the isometric adventure game set in a post-apocalyptic Africa from renowned South African devs The Brotherhood – coming to PS4 and Nintendo Switch.
