Xbox Family Settings App Available Now on iOS and Android to Help Manage Children’s Gaming

by Dave McCarthy, Corporate Vice President, Xbox Operations

At Xbox, we believe that gaming is a source of joy, inspiration, and social connection with friends and family – and this is true now more than ever before. With COVID-19 continuing to have impact our daily lives, gaming has helped people stay connected while social distancing. Gaming is a great way to unify and bring people together, but we also believe that gaming should be part of a balanced life as well as safe and welcoming for all, and we know this is especially important to families.

Today, just in time for the new school year, we are launching the Xbox Family Settings app, which is available for free to download for iOS and Android. The app is an important next step in our journey to provide families with the tools they need to help create the right balance of gaming in their lives. Right from their phone, parents and caregivers can easily create child accounts, update screen time limits, respond to notifications, and much more. It’s an easy and simple way to set guardrails on children’s gaming on Xbox One and, come November 10, on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S!

The app has been in preview for the last few months, which has provided valuable customer feedback to help us to refine the experience that is available today. We are also thrilled to unveil three new app features that parents, and caregivers can manage right from their fingertips:

  • Accept or decline friends your child wants to add
  • View and manage your child’s friends list
  • Proactively grant your child more screen time – this was a common suggestion from our users during preview. Thank you for the feedback!

How to Use the Xbox Family Settings app

An important first step to using the app is to ensure that each child has their own child or teen account. And setting up a child account is quick and easy through the app and on average, takes just minutes.

Once a child account has been set up, parents and caregivers can customize access to gaming for each child:

  • Screen time limits – set limits for each day of the week; for example, you can allow for more game time on the weekends or reduce it during the school week. And a new feature available today allows parents to proactive grant additional screen time – a great option if they did well on a test or completed their homework!
  • Content filters – set filters based on the age of each child; for example, an 8-year-old can only access games that are rated E and will be blocked from accessing titles that are intended for more mature players
  • Play and communication settings – choose the option to block all access to play and communication with other players, limit access to “friends only” or grant permission for older children to play and chat with “everyone”
  • Friends list – new with the app is the ability to approve or decline friend requests your child has made to add friends; parents can also view their friends list
  • Activity reports – view daily and weekly activity reports for each child to understand how they are spending their time on Xbox

The app also includes a feature to easily enable access and multiplayer capability for Minecraft, which is rated E10+.  Sometimes parents of younger children want to provide access to Minecraft and possibly enable online play with their friends, and a convenient toggle in the app unlocks those specific capabilities quickly.  We received positive feedback on this feature from users and we may include similar functionality for other games in the future.

We know that one-size does not fit all and it’s so important that as parents, you have the flexibility to decide and customize what the right access to gaming looks like for your child. With the app, you can also respond to notifications in real time, such as requests from your child to extend the console screen time limit for the day.

Looking Towards the Future

Parents and caregivers know best what content is right for their child. By bringing key family settings features right to your phone, we hope that families feel empowered to have important conversations about how to balance gaming with other responsibilities like school and time with friends. We will also release additional new features in the future for the Xbox Family Settings app to provide families with the tools and support they need for safer and fun for everyone.

Download the Xbox Family Settings app today for free for iOS and Android to jump in and easily manage gaming for your family!

At the beginning, Tito will be the assigned partner to explore the tracks of the Triviatopia universe, but the coins allow you to run alongside the other collectible characters in the series. Old timey arcade shooter Bartlow’s Dread Machine is out now on Xbox One and Steam

Rescue President Roosevelt in this rip-roaring wonder from the dawn of the Electric Age

Seattle, Washington – Sept 29th, 2020 – Tribetoy and Beep Games, Inc.’s old-timey arcade shooter based on early 20th-century parlour game cabinets, Bartlow’s Dread Machine, is out now on Xbox One and Steam for $14.99. After premiering on Steam Early Access earlier this summer, this release introduces the sixth and final chapter of this serial pulp adventure, as well as marks its console debut on Xbox One. To commemorate its launch, Tribetoy and Beep Games, Inc. have released a new trailer showcasing the parlous scrapes you’ll get into across your journey.

Set entirely within the confines of this titular relic from the dawn of the Electric Age, Bartlow’s Dread Machine casts one to two players as government agents in a series of escapades through New York, San Francisco, and all across the continent as they seek to rescue the kidnapped President Roosevelt from the forces of evil. But beware, sinister forces are at work!

Bound to the clockwork gizmos running this contraption, agents are mere metal figurines roving around on rails. But these aren’t any ordinary tin toys as they have free rein on how to navigate these forking networks of tracks. Think Pac-Man if he were made of metal, wore a cool peacoat, and was packing some serious heat! Sets made of wood and tin unfold around you in real-time as you navigate this immersive puppet show. Encounter a cast of improbable monsters and historical characters as you traverse the high seas and beyond using trains, ships and even a newfangled automobile!

Bartlow’s Dread Machine features a wealth of content with 6 worlds, 52 guns, and all manner of outfits to deck out your gumshoe. Unlock unique spins on historical characters, like Zombie General Custer, Nikola Tesla, Annie Oakley. Plus the drop-in / drop-out couch co-op contains per-player difficulty, allowing each player to set the challenge level to their preference.

“We wanted to create something we haven’t seen before and realized there was little overlap between early 20th century arcade cabinets and video games, as the latter essentially replaced the former, so we wanted to essentially combine the two,” said  Matthew Hoseterey Co-Founder and Director of Design at Tribetoy. “Bartlow’s Dread Machine maintains the aesthetic and tone of the former, while instilling it with the buttery smooth gameplay and advanced design of the latter—the result being something utterly original. We can’t wait for players to discover it for themselves on Steam and Xbox!”

Bartlow’s Dread Machine offers language support for English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese.

Its third title, the twin-stick shooter set inside an early 20th-century parlour game, Bartlow’s Dread Machine, is due in 2020 on PC and Xbox One.

SYDNEY – Sept. 29, 2020 – Projection: First Light, the illuminating shadow manipulation puzzle-platformer from publisher Blowfish Studios and developers Shadowplay Studios and Sweaty Chair Studio, is out now for Nintendo Switch™, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam.

Trace the history of shadow puppetry on a globe-trotting adventure as Greta, a young woman with the ability to manipulate light and control shadows. Traverse breathtaking environments reflecting the artform’s trail across China, Indonesia, Turkey, and Victorian England. Bend light to solve puzzles, discover secrets, and undertake a journey of self-enlightenment.

Shade the world around Greta, playing with light sources to create platforms that allow her to access new areas, walls to keep back enemies, and much more. Forge a path forward wielding her luminous powers to find creative solutions before facing off against mythological creatures. Call upon legendary heroes from an array of cultures to bolster Greta’s talents and learn more about her newfound abilities.

Explore richly detailed settings illustrating the evolution of shadow puppetry throughout history. Follow Greta’s journey through each beautiful location, accompanied by a sweeping score performed by period-authentic instruments. Developer Shadowplay Studios consulted with Australian shadow puppeteer and historian Richard Bradshaw to ensure that Projection: First Light shines as an accurate and respectful representation of this pastime through the ages.

“The Projection: First Light team formed to bring the story of shadow puppetry to a wider audience,” said Michael Chu, founder Shadowplay Studios. “So, naturally, we’re all beaming to deliver the game with the release on PC and consoles today.”

Projection: First Light is out now on Nintendo Switch™, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam for Windows PC for $19.99 USD / €17.99 / $24.99 AUD. It features English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Arabic, and Turkish language support.
