WARFRAME UNVEILS UPDATE 30 RAILJACK DETAILS AND TARGET DATE, NEW WARFRAME “SEVAGOTH”, THE NEXT PRIME ACCESS, AND MORE

In its first Devstream of the year, Digital Extremes hinted at a few key elements of Warframe®’s promising plans for 2021. Revealing the next update name, Call of the Tempestarii (pronounced “Tem-pest-are-ee”), Digital Extremes’ mystical theme for Update 30 is couched in ethereal tones, chaotic Void Storms and a redemptive lore-filled Quest. Featuring prominently in the update’s lore is the next Warframe, “Sevagoth”, whose unique Abilities include a second “Reaper form”.

Devstream 151 revealed the first Prime Access of the year, the musical player favorite “Octavia Prime”, replete with exclusive Shawzin, fresh details on two new seasonal activities, and Quality of Life Dojo upgrades. Players will see a snazzy new Zephyr Deluxe included in the update, featuring upgraded Deluxe Landing Craft, Animations and UI.

Currently in development for a March release, Call of the Tempestarii will offer quintessential Warframe content and new wrinkles in Railjack gameplay. From the all new Corpus Railjack space combat spotlighting omnipotent Capital Ships, chaotic Void Storms and Command Intrinsics, DE will weave the recent Orphix Venom mech battles into missions to vary Railjack with more core gameplay. Call of the Tempestarii is yet another step in delivering a better Railjack experience.

Sevagoth, the 46th Warframe, digs into the ethereal by sowing, reaping and draining enemy souls. Sevagoth offers four classic Warframe Abilities plus the powerful second ‘Wraith’ meter, which, when full, unleashes an exalted Reaper form with three base powers. Check out the full Devstream here for first gameplay demo details!

The player-favorite musical Warframe, Octavia Prime, is the next Prime Warframe. Capable of defeating enemies by wielding musical weapons and sonic attacks, Octavia Prime offers a complete package including her two signature weapons (Tenora Prime, Pandero Prime), new Armor and Syandana and, best of all, the bonus Prime Shawzin, the player-favorite Orokin guitar. Prepare to rock the Origin System with Octavia!

Starting Monday, February 1, Tenno will experience Nightwave: Intermission 3 content and, moving into February, players should keep an eye out for two new special new seasonal activities, Star Days and Lunar New Year. Several new Dojo upgrades promise to please dedicated players who love their Dojo building activities. See all upcoming season activities and Dojo upgrade details in Devstream 151.

Root Film Releasing in the West March 19th

PQube has announced that they are aiming to have Root Film released in the West for the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch on March 19th and alongside this announcement the company has also released a new trailer showing off a little bit of what to expect from the game. Root Film is based around the reboot of a mysteriously cancelled TV series “Shimane Mystery Drama Project.”

Players will take on the role 23-year-old Rintaro Yagumo as his excitement for an amazing casting opportunity is quickly curbed, when a horrible murder interrupts their location scouting process. Players will be able to gather keywords during in-game conversations using “Intuition” and then use these keywords to confront suspects in “Max Mode” in an effort to solve the mystery, though be wary, there are more sides to this story than one as a “zapping” system will allow players to see the perspective of two characters at the same time. Experiencing events from two different viewpoints is an essential tool to find out the truth about “Shimane Mystery Drama Project.”

Ova Magica Kickstarter Launched

Blending different types of games together has often made for some rather interesting combinations and one more farming style game is looking to make a splash in early 2022. ClaudiaTheDev and Top Hat Studios have launched a Kickstarter campaign for Ova Magica, a farming and monster taming game the developers say is inspired by the likes of Story of Seasons, Pokemon, Slime Rancher, and more.

After moving to the sleepy town of Clover, the player is entrusted with revitalizing an overgrown piece of land into the farm of their dreams, and taking care of cute, mysterious creatures known as “blobs.” These blobs each have special skills which help with everything from farming to protecting you on expeditions for rare crafting materials. Train cute blob creatures, take care of your farm and make friends with the people of Clover Town.

The developer was initially seeking €20,000 in funding and has already cleared that goal by a substantial amount with the current amount sitting at €110,073. Currently Ova Magica is set to be released sometime in early 2022 for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Switch, and PC and you can check out both a trailer and some screenshots for the game below.

The Medium Review

The Medium

Developer: Bloober Team
Publisher: Bloober Team
Platforms: Xbox Series XPC (Reviewed)
Release Date: 28 Jan 2021
Price: $49,99 USD – Available Here

Overview

Je ne sais quoi. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it is “something (such as an appealing quality) that cannot be adequately described or expressed”. Could be a good meal or an engaging movie, but sometimes even video games tend to have it. Whether it is in terms of storytelling or gameplay mechanics, when executed right it is a sure way to boost the appeal of the game and extend its longevity. So even more games wish to have it. The Medium is trying to present us something like that but does it succeed? Is it enough? Read on and find out.

Story

Before we get to the point, it’s only fair to say a word or two about the story. And I do mean a word or two because honestly there’s isn’t much to work with here. It’s not that it is lacking, but it is pretty simple and straightforward. You play as Marianne, a medium (who could have guessed, right?) with an ability to communicate and see into the otherworld. But not just any otherworld. This one is a pretty unwelcoming place. According to the store page, the design was strongly influenced by the works of Zdzislaw Beksinski and even if you don’t know who he is, a short googling session will tell you that you’re in for quite a ride. During the opening tutorial section, we learn some stuff about Marianne. Besides the obvious of communicating the ghosts, she is also an orphan, and to make things somehow worse, the story kicks in right after the funeral to your adoptive father. Marianne receives an enigmatic phone call that directs her to an abandoned Niwa Resort. It is a scary playground full of fixed camera angles, puzzles, occasional monsters that chase you, ghosts, and performance issues (way scarier than ghosts). I have to give credit where credit is due cause the story, later on, touches upon some heavy topics. It serves as a great backdrop to the haunting visuals in the game. Granted, you’ll see those mostly in the “split world”, as I call it, so let’s talk more about it now.

Gameplay

Seeing how Marianne can tap into the otherworld instantly, the obvious question is how does the game present it? All of it at the same time, of course. As seen in the following screenshots, both worlds are rendered simultaneously. Most of the game feels like a homage to the fixed camera games from the golden era of PsOne. Some sections of the game were reminiscent of Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Parasite Eve. In the first hour of the game, pretty much all of the gameplay mechanics and gimmicks are introduced, and then it’s up to you to just follow the story. You examine objects, find items, combine them, solve puzzles and unravel the mystery of Niwa Resort. A good number of the puzzles don’t require much thinking and they usually boil down to thoroughly exploring the room until you find that one placed item (if not hidden) and move on deeper into the resort. One good thing is that the game doesn’t have any backtracking during the exploration, which is something that I usually expect from the games in this genre. However, there are quite a few moments where you can die if not careful. Grotesque monsters and deadly butterflies can be the end of you if you’re not fast enough. On such occasions, I noticed that the game’s autosave system isn’t evenly spread out, considering that in some scenarios, getting caught by a monster or dying could mean replaying a whole 10 minutes of the game. Which doesn’t seem like much but multiply that by dying 5 or 6 times consecutively and you see the problem (or maybe I’m just really bad at escaping). To be fair, you’re not completely defenseless in the game. Some of the powers you have as a medium include an energy shield and an energy blast. The first one is quite useful while trying to pass through the cloud of deadly butterflies while the latter can be used to charge power sources (in order to start up an elevator or open some doors).

Visuals

The presentation of the “split world” would be a forgettable gimmick in other games, but over here it’s elevated to a whole new level. It’s not just the background and level design that’s inspired by the paintings of Zdzislaw Beksinski, the whole design of monsters is really something to look at. It’s fun to look at some environment during split gameplay and see how it is completely deformed on the screen next to it. One thing that I also noticed is that the model of Marianne could have used a bit more polish. The lack of “fine-tuning” on her is especially noticeable during cutscenes and when she acts as a contrast to a darker background. Other than that, everything is up to standards. I only wish that I could have the option to sometimes completely focus the camera on the otherworld background. Some locations there are seriously mesmerizing as they are horrific, therefore screenshot worthy.

Audio

Now let’s talk about the team behind the sounds of The Medium. Arkadiusz Reikowski is a familiar name or folks that have played another game from Bloober Team – Layers of Fear 2. He also did some exquisite work for the soundtracks of Kholat and Vampire: The Masquerade – Coteries of New York. Another name has a cult following when it comes to video game soundtracks, especially in Silent Hill games. Akira Yamaoka. A man whose work is so good that you end up listening to the soundtracks long after you have finished the game, years and years after. This team-up for the soundtrack of The Medium is something I never knew I needed and especially had no idea that I would enjoy it this much. It really says a lot when a game has a soundtrack so eerie that forces the horrifying visuals to take a backseat every now and then. In any case, while there is a lot to be said about the game, the soundtrack of The Medium is a no-brainer purchase.

Overall

Have you ever been in a situation where things are going so well that you just wait for something bad to happen? And then it happens. One thing. It doesn’t have to be big but it’s there just enough to ruin the whole experience for you. That’s what happened with The Medium. The soundtrack, the story, the gameplay. All of that combined makes for a decent game, it’s just a shame that some aspects were presented in a barely playable manner. Now, I have a fairly powerful rig I haven’t yet encountered a game until now that it struggle this much. During the “split world” moments, the framerate would often dip way below 30 and turn the game into a slideshow. Pretty to look at but horrible to play. So even that “je ne sais quoi” in terms of a unique gameplay feature seems like a waste of time if it can’t be presented correctly. I really hope the framerate issue is fixed in the next patch cause right now it is a deterrent from an otherwise great game.

GODS WILL FALL OUT TODAY

Ten ancient Gods, eight Celtic warriors, one brutal world

Sydney, 29th January 2021 | Deep Silver is pleased to announce Gods Will Fall – a high-stakes, dark fantasy action game featuring the few remaining Celtic warriors of a destroyed army – is out today on the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft, Nintendo Switch™, PC and Google Stadia.

Gods Will Fall is developed by the Manchester-based indie studio Clever Beans. Use your eight different warriors, each equipped with their own weapon, to unravel the dark secrets of every ancient God. With a pick up and play combat style that is easy to learn but hard to master, a massive challenge awaits all who venture within.

Gamers can choose either the standard edition or the Valiant Edition, which includes Hunter’s Head Gear (previously available for those who pre-ordered the game) and the Valley of the Dormant Gods DLC.

The Hunter’s Head Gear is assigned at random in each new game playthrough. The thrill of the hunt runs through the blood of the clan and it is ritual for the trophies seized to be worn proudly and displayed for all to take notice. The hides of five exclusive beasts; a wolf, bear, boar, fox and badger are fit to be worn by any warrior and shall act as an emblazoned warning to the gods that the hunt is indeed on.

The Valley of the Dormant Gods DLC further enhances the game with three new gods – in addition to the 10 already in the game – two new weapon classes, new items, new skills, overworld extras and warriors garb. The content will be released episodically as three new levels within the game in the coming months post-launch. Each level will include a new God, alongside the other bonus content.

  • Three New Gods – Enter and battle your way through three new infernal god realms. Each of these uncharted hellscapes, inhabited by abominable swarms of minions, will be a gruelling test to your mettle.
  • New Weapon Classes – Play as two new barbarous warrior types, each with their own unique death-dealing style of combat.
  • New Items – A windfall of new gear and provisions to aid your clan in battle and turn the tides of war.
  • New Skills – New methods of melee to further expand your warriors’ combat system and ensure the apt champion is chosen for the battle that lies ahead.
  • Overworld Extras – As you traverse the tranquil overworld, keep your eyes peeled and unearth the hidden secrets now spread across the serene landscape.
  • Warriors Garb – Suit up your clan in the finest battle-ready attire and headgear for extra swagger as they enter the fray.

Story

You Are The Last Hope For Humanity

The gods’ torturous rule over humanity has lasted for millennia. Bent on cruelty and suffering, they demand to be served with blind worship through an oath of fealty pledged from every man, woman and child. To those who don’t submit to the gods’ will; a slow and merciless death awaits.

Experience the brutal trials of a venturous band of warriors in their desperate plight to sever the gods’ callous grip on humanity. Every man and woman who can muster a blade, having suffered the brutality of the gods’ reign for too long, will be called upon to form your clan of eight Celtic survivors and rise up to take on the legions of horrific beasts and minions that dwell in each of the gods’ hellish realms.

A personal tale emerges with every decision made. Succeed and see legends born. Fail, and watch lives turn to dust.

  • Unique District and Buildings: The Thanh unique district offers additional Culture for each adjacent district. Once Flight is researched, the district generates Tourism equal to its Culture output. It does not require a population and is cheaper to build than the Encampment district it replaces.

This pack also includes Kublai Khan as an alternate leader for China and Mongolia:

  • Leader Unique Ability: Kublai Khan’s unique ability, “Gerege,” provides one extra Economic policy slot in any government. It also grants a random Eureka and Inspiration when establishing a Trading Post in another civilization’s city for the first time;
  • As a leader of China, Kublai Khan’s science boosts are even more powerful, and his extra policy slot empowers economic strategies. As a leader of Mongolia, Kublai Khan leverages trade routes for military might.

New “Monopolies & Corporations” Game Mode*

The Vietnam and Kublai Khan Pack also introduces the new game mode, Monopolies and Corporations. This optional game mode elevates strategic economic gameplay to a whole new level, offering enticing new rewards based on claiming, acquiring, and exploiting map resources in every era:

  • Create an Industry around duplicate Luxury resources to grant buffs to host cities and provide bonus Great Merchant points;
  • Transform Industries into Corporations, which can be given customized names, increase Industry effects, and create Products. Products can be shipped to other cities to share Industry effects throughout a civilization;
  • A Monopoly is created when a civilization dominates the global supply of a Luxury Resource. Monopolies provide additional Tourism and can significantly increase the Gold generated each turn, especially for civilizations focused on global trade.

New District and Buildings

The Vietnam and Kublai Khan Pack also includes a new district and new buildings:

  • New District: The Preserve district is placed in a secluded area untouched by infrastructure. It can Culture-bomb adjacent unowned tiles, gains additional Housing based on Appeal and increases the Appeal of adjacent tiles;
  • New Buildings: Two buildings can be constructed in the Preserve district. The Grove unlocks with Mysticism, while the Sanctuary unlocks with Conservation. Both increase the yields of adjacent Charming and Breathtaking tiles that have not been improved.
