Boston — 14 Dec. 2021 — PAX East 2022 badges go on sale later today at 3:00 PM ET / 12:00 PM PT, show organizers ReedPop and Penny Arcade announce. The East Coast’s most attended gaming event returns for an in-person show at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center (BCEC) from Thursday, 21 April 2022 to Sunday, 24 April 2022.

Both single-day badges, for $62, and four-day badges for $235 will be available later today on the PAX East website. PAX East will return with a massive show floor featuring hundreds of publishers, developers, and vendors, to be announced in the coming months leading up to the show.

Additionally, attendees can expect a full weekend of panels, live shows from Penny Arcade, esports competitions in the PAX Arena and concerts featuring video game-inspired music. PAX East will also provide an opportunity for the community to come together with tournaments, tabletop lounges, and freeplay sections featuring PC, console, and retro games.

After canceling 2021’s show for the health and safety of the community, and successfully hosting safe events with Seattle’s PAX West and Philadelphia’s PAX Unplugged, PAX East will require mandatory proof of vaccination and face coverings for all attendees, exhibitors, and guests in the BCEC. Additional health and safety information will be shared on the PAX East website in the leadup to the event.

“With an incredible PAX Unplugged in the rearview, we turn our sights to Boston – wicked Boston, the site of a most powerful ritual,” said Jerry Holkins, co-founder of Penny Arcade and PAX. “After seeing the community safely come together in Seattle and Philadelphia, the stars are right. Rise, PAX East; Rise!”

Asteroids™: Recharged Explodes onto Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, PC, VCS Today

Asteroids™: Recharged Explodes onto Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, PC, VCS Today

1980’s Arcade Classic Hyperspace Warps into the 21st Century with a Modern Touch

NEW YORK — Dec 14, 2021 — Asteroids: Recharged, the modern co-op revival of the definitive arcade shooter from Atari®, made in collaboration with developers Adamvision Studios and SneakyBox Studios, blasts onto the scene and is now available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and 4, Xbox Series X|S and One, Atari VCS, and PC for Steam and Epic Games Store.

Asteroids: Recharged is the latest Atari title to receive a modern refresh, following behind Centipede: Recharged and Black Widow: Recharged, and preceding 2022’s Breakout: Recharged. Known for its zero-gravity controls and surprise alien invasions, the highly influential 1979 space shooter Asteroids was arguably the original arcade high-score hunting ground, with the first high score leaderboard with the ability to enter one’s initials.

Return to the roots of 1980’s top-grossing arcade game and Atari 2600 best seller while piloting through giant asteroids. Blast rocks into pieces and take down aliens to earn high scores with just one life on the global leaderboards. Play solo or with a friend in couch co-op, perfect for Steam Remote Play and PlayStation Share Play. Test rock-smashing skills in more than two dozen Challenges introducing tricky scenarios testing even Asteroids masters.

While staying true to the original “thrust forward and shoot” play style, Asteroids: Recharged ups the intensity with new powerups such as Side Shots, Rapid Fire, Mega Lasers, and a handy reflector in case a flying saucer sneaks its way into play. And if space gets too crowded, use the ultimate risk-reward “hyperspace” button to teleport to a random spot on screen.

Asteroids: Recharged doesn’t just stand in the shadow of the past, but defines its own style with new vibrant visuals. Gameplay takes full advantage of modern widescreen displays with support for high refresh rates on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, all complemented by a modern upbeat synthwave soundtrack from award-winning composer Megan McDuffee.

“The simplicity of Asteroids is what makes it easy to learn, yet difficult to master,” said Wade Rosen, CEO, Atari. “We’re looking forward to bringing the old-school arcade action of the classic to a new audience with Asteroids: Recharged, as well as giving veterans to showcase their skills. It’s just like riding a bike, right?”

Asteroids: Recharged is now available on the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Steam and Epic Games Store for Windows PC, and the Atari VCS for $9.99. The Atari VCS versions each feature exclusive content and are optimized to work with the new Atari Wireless Classic Joystick.

Asteroids: Recharged supports English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, and simplified and traditional Chinese language text.

Coming to GTA Online: A New Station from ROSALÍA x Arca, and Station Updates from Big Boy and DJ Pooh, and Much More
Plus Exclusive New Music from Dr. Dre, ScHoolboy Q, Freddie Gibbs, and More as Part of The Contract

Adding to the announcement this week of GTA Online: The Contract, a heavy-hitting lineup of new music is set to come to Los Santos including a brand-new radio station, plus special updates to two of the city’s beloved hip hop stations, and exclusive new music from Dr. Dre and more, all debuting December 15th.

An all-new station, MOTOMAMI Los Santos hosted by ROSALÍA and longtime Rockstar collaborator Arca, plays everything from artists such as Caroline Polachek to Daddy Yankee, Mr. Fingers, and Aventura, as well as ROSALÍA’s first single from her forthcoming MOTOMAMI album, “LA FAMA” with The Weeknd, tracks from Arca, and an exclusive song from Bad Gyal produced by The Music Locker’s own Keinemusik, and much more.

Two existing stations also get a major overhaul. On Radio Los Santos, Big Boy drops a stack of exclusive new music including tracks from Hit-Boy, Freddie Gibbs featuring Pusha T, TiaCorine produced by Kenny Beats, Rich the Kid, Offset, Mozzy featuring YG, alongside music from Saweetie, Future, Tyler, The Creator, Kodak Black and others. Big Boy also enlists Mike Dean and ScHoolboy Q for special cameos on the station.

Also premiering on Radio Los Santos is the lead single from an upcoming EP on CircoLoco Records; “Let’s Get It,” the brand-new track from ScHoolboy Q produced by Nez. In addition to the new track hitting the radio, a new Nez house banger also featured on the EP, “You Wanna” can be found on an official CircoLoco Records USB collectible, in addition to second USB featuring “Let’s Get it.”  The EP’s third track, “Freaks” by Nez featuring Moodymann and Gangsta Boo is featured in “Kenny’s Backyard Boogie Mix” of last summer’s Los Santos Tuners update. All three tracks can be heard exclusively within GTA Online until the EP releases on CircoLoco Records early in the new year.

On West Coast Classics, DJ Pooh pays tribute to Dr. Dre’s illustrious career with “Dre Day” — a takeover featuring classic Dr. Dre cuts such as “The Next Episode,” and his work with legends such as 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Blackstreet, Ice Cube, Nas, and JAY-Z, alongside call-ins from some of Dre’s friends and collaborators.

And West Coast legend Dam Funk provides the score with his fresh take on the classic g-funk sound for Los Santos, all debuting as part of the latest story within GTA Online, The Contract.

Stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for the latest on GTA Online: The Contract, including details on the new music studio, where you can get a rare look into Dr. Dre’s creative process at the new Record A Studios as you, Franklin and crew help to track down brand new unreleased music.

With development led by Ubisoft Sofia, Dawn of Ragnarök is the next major expansion, continuing Year 2 of post-launch support for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. In this expansion, Eivor must embrace their destiny as Odin, the Norse god of Battle and Wisdom. The dwarven kingdom of Svartalfheim is crumbling, and amid the chaos, Odin’s beloved son, Baldr, has been taken prisoner by the unkillable fire giant, Surtr. In Dawn of Ragnarök, players will be able to unleash new divine powers as they continue their legendary Viking saga by embarking on a desperate rescue quest through a mythological world of contrasts.

Assassin’s Creed Crossover Stories were also announced, the first cross-game project on the franchise, led by Ubisoft Quebec in close collaboration with Ubisoft Montreal. Assassin’s Creed Crossover Stories will be available for free for owners of the respective base games on December 15; one story will be available in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and one story will be available in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. These stories explore the ties between the heroes of the two games, featuring new environments to explore as well as a rich story line. For the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla story, A Fated Encounter,  players must have reached Settlement Level 4 and completed the quest “A Wise Friend,” where Eivor helps Valka establish herself in Ravensthorpe. For the Assassin’s Creed Odyssey story, Those Who Are Treasured, players will need to have completed Chapter 1 and reached Megaris to access the content, but it’s recommended that players finish the main game’s three story arcs (Family, Cult of Kosmos and Mythology) to avoid spoilers.

With development led by Ubisoft Montreal***, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla offers players the captivating experience of playing as Eivor, a legendary Viking warrior, driven from Norway by endless wars and dwindling resources in ninth century AD. Players can relive the ruthless fighting style of Viking warriors with a dynamic dual-wielding combat system and experience exciting gameplay features such as raids, assaults, and the settlement, as well as a substantial progression and gear upgrade system. Political alliances, combat decisions and dialogue choices can influence the world of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, so players must choose wisely to protect their clan’s home and their future.

Australian game development industry doubles revenue to $226 million over the past five years

The industry recorded over 20% year on year growth for the past three years due to the increasing popularity of video games

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, 14 December 2021 – The Australian video game development industry doubled its revenue to $226 million since 2016, according to results from the fifth annual Australian Game Development Survey (AGDS) 2021 released today from video games industry body the Interactive Games & Entertainment Association (IGEA). The survey measures the size of the Australian game development industry and revealed that the industry expects further growth locally, contributing to the growth of the global market, which was worth $AU240 billion in 2020.

“Five years ago, the Australian game development industry achieved $114 million in revenue and has grown exponentially since then to record over $226 million the last financial year,” said IGEA CEO Ron Curry. “The figures prove the potential and adaptability of the globally reputable Australian video games industry, and we need to capitalise on this experience while we can.”

The survey shows that over the past three years, the Australian game development industry has recorded year-on-year revenue growth of over 20%, with 2021 generating an increase of 23%, coupled with employment growth of 7%. Employment has grown by over 50% since 2016 to 1,327 full-time workers in the industry. 2021 has seen a vast improvement in gender diversity across the workforce. 23% of employees are (cisgender) female while 10% are transgender, non-binary, or gender diverse – a testament to the recruiting and talent attraction programs being implemented by Australian game development businesses.

However, Australian game developers’ most significant challenge is employment-related, with many developers still having difficulty attracting early-stage funding or accessing appropriate government funding. The main issue for employers currently is hiring employees with specialised skills; the global demand for experienced staff, closed borders and unfavourable migration programs are the main contributors to this. Additionally, Australia suffered a significant brain drain following the GFC, with many Australian skilled workers continuing to live and thrive in studios overseas.

Recent Federal Government support through the 30% Digital Games Tax Offset (DGTO) to be introduced in July 2022 provides the promise of game development reviving Australia’s economy, which has spurned additional State Government rebates in NSW and QLD. This injection of confidence from the Australian Government has encouraged multinational studios and investors to step up their activities locally and explore options to establish studios in Australia, creating the jobs needed to entice specialised workers back home or consider Australia a place to work.

“The support from the Federal Government is the engine that will drive Australian video game development to become a billion-dollar industry,” said Curry. “The local industry is poised to take advantage of the global growth in playing games and the realisation that games have provided a vital source of connection, enjoyment, education and wellbeing during the pandemic. We at the IGEA expect to see the video game industry contribute further to the Australian economy with the commitment to the provision of appropriate funding levers provided by all levels of government.

“While we congratulate the Government for introducing the DGTO, we continue to work with them to see the return of a fund similar to the cancelled Australian Game Development Fund, to garner support for our high potential independent development sector.”
