Overview

Few could have imagined that a development team best known for their mecha based series Armored Core would eventually become one of the top action RPG developers in recent years. After starting with Demon’s Souls back in 2009 and refining their formula across the Dark Souls series and other games, FromSoftware has already established itself as a powerhouse in game development. As such when it was revealed that the team would be putting out their most ambitious game yet in the form of Elden Ring, many wondered just how a game with Dark Souls’ style of combat would transition into an open world format and thankfully it has turned into something that must be experienced by any fan of the genre.

Story

Fans of FromSoftware’s games have likely grown accustomed to the fact that the main plot of most of their stories is told through atmosphere, item descriptions, and even objects located while exploring while actual cutscenes and explanations are kept fairly limited. It must be said that while that is still at least partially true for Elden Ring, there is a bit more structure this time around. To avoid potential spoilers we will avoid going into detail about the few key story elements here. Players will still encounter vast areas where very little information will actually be revealed to them but through exploration of both the overworld, including occasional surviving landmarks that feature recorded history from before the “shattering,” delving into dungeons or taking on foes in an arena and obtaining their treasures will lore describing a place or past event be unveiled. Be it lore similar to mythologies from our own world or original elements, the gilded world of Elden Ring is as twisted as one would come to expect from FromSoftware as the golden shine hides the dark and depressing nature of the world players must venture through on their journey to the Erdtree.

Along these same lines players will find that there are far more NPCs to interact with than in previous entries, though actually keeping an eye on their quest lines can often feel like a matter of luck more often than not. These NPCs, including important ones that can play a vital role in the core plot, can have missed dialogue prompts should the player either bypass a location or progress to far into certain lands and while most of the time these issues only result in a loss of a bit of lore, there are times that they will entirely glitch an NPCs quest line entirely. While this does mean that players are encouraged to play through multiple times to try or see different things in Elden Ring’s massive open world, missing an entire questline due to a glitch isn’t the best result.

That being said, when things do work well the NPCs and the story progression feels like it is at its best yet. While players are still able to freely explore the Lands Between to a certain extent, there are generally hard locks in place where players will need to face down monstrous bosses that are given special focus or interrupted by an allied NPC who will describe what they may need to do next. It is also nice to note that many of these friendly NPCs will have not only satisfactory storylines, at least when it comes to the darker world of Elden Ring, but will progress throughout large portions of the game, though as mentioned before some elements can be a bit finicky.

Of course, following these routes isn’t entirely necessary because there are numerous ways to trigger progression in certain locations, meaning that one player’s journey through Elden Ring may be entirely different from another’s even if both dive into the story and explore as much as possible. By employing such a unique world with so much to discover, players will be able to explore and find new elements in the world as they dig into Elden Ring’s twisted lore for hours on end all while fearing that they may have went a bit too far at times at the risk of both breaking a quest line or missing something neat that was just out of view.

Gameplay

In many ways those who have played a Dark Souls game will be partially familiar with the way Elden Ring handles things as many core aspects of the game have been kept the same only with a variety of improvements in quality of life, polish, and variability as well as finally putting in the ability to jump. Players will still find that they can build their character generally how they wish to by using the new level up currency “Runes” dropped enemies and located in the world and whether players choose to play a swift character, magic user, shielded knight, dual-wielding greatsword user, or any combination of these there are more ways than ever to build a powerful enough character to make these builds viable.

Magic still requires the use of FP to cast as well as an equipped catalyst or staff depending on the spell being used but spell slots are no longer linked to a stat. Instead players can locate items scattered around the world that will increase the amount of spells that can be memorized at any given time. Along these same lines weapon affinities are more manageable than ever. While players will need to progress and obtain various “Ashes of War ” that serve as swappable weapon skills or whetstones, various attributes can then be applied to a weapon should the player choose. Facing down enemies weak to fire? Apply a flaming slash Ash of War and set the weapon affinity to fire. Focusing on building up status ailments instead? Apply additional Bleed, Poison, or Poison Rot build-up instead and aim for massive amounts of DoT.

All of these various improvements to character building provides players with the tools they need to tackle the massive open world that FromSoftware has prepared for them. While there are still “legacy dungeons” that see the player travel through tighter locations and fighting room to room while dodging traps and instant kill falls, the majority of the time spent in Elden Ring will be in the “Lands Between.” While things may appear daunting and a bit aimless at times, players can make use of limited waypoints to mark locations of interest and even place markers down where dangerous threats or friendly NPCs might be for later use. As players explore the open world they will come across everything from roaming groups of soldiers or wolves, to massive world bosses that become a grand challenge of their own, to countless mini-dungeons that generally have useful rewards at the end. All while riding their faithful steed Torrent who works both as an ally that can tank some damage from enemies as well as the fasted way to get around new locations or climb up previously unreachable ledges.

Many of these mini-dungeons tend to feel quite unique at the start but it is worth noting that, depending on how much players explore, they may begin to feel a bit similar to one another after a bit as there are only so many different types and they almost always feature the same type of threats as well, with only the biggest variety coming near the end of the actual game. Along those same lines, it is also worth noting that the aforementioned world bosses may often come across as welcome challenges and can be rather awe inspiring at times, the scale of some fights and the locations they take place in can either glitch a fight out to the point an enemy will forcibly reset or, in at least a few occasions, become stuck in the level geometry requiring a reset at a “Site of Grace.”

These Sites of Grace work as the new bonfire system where players can level up, refill their health and flasks at the risk of respawning most enemies, and assign their spells. In interesting fashion, alongside the Graces there are now Stakes of Marika located near most bosses that work as something of a checkpoint system where players can choose to respawn and tackle the boss or occasionally swarm of enemies without having to make a long run every time. This is a minor change but a welcome one. It is also nice to note that Sites of Grace are also how players make use of a game’s fast travel system. Every Grace touched by the player can be traveled to at nearly any time as long as the player can open up their map with the exception being within an incomplete mini-dungeon. The ability to fast travel to locations to either farm, complete a quest that may have been previously overlooked, or discover something new is a must have in a game like Elden Ring that features such a large open world that spans far beyond what players may initially think.

Alongside these mechanics players will also find a few adjustments made to make things a bit simpler in some cases. Players can now make use of a crafting kit and recipes learned from journals scattered throughout the world to make items ranging from firebombs to weapon grease and even those that heal status effects. This mechanic isn’t required by any means but it is a nice option. Another new option is Spirit Ashes. These are summonable computer controlled allies that can be used to fight bosses and larger scale battles against standard foes. Ashes can be upgraded the same way a weapon can, though it is worth noting that players cannot use Ashes more than once per battle and if a friend is summoned in to fight alongside the player, Ashes cannot be used in this instance as well.

Between the various spells, weapon types, Ashes, and more provided to players, Elden Ring provides just a near endless amount of variety and there is even a way to make sure that even the worst built character may have a chance as long as they can defeat a certain boss first. Doing so unlocks the ability to use a limited item to completely reset a character’s level, giving them the chance to redistribute stat points that either may have been poorly spent or instead focused around a new weapon or spell the player has located in their journey.

All that being said, Elden Ring may be a more approachable game that can cater to a variety of styles, but it is far from an easy game. Even characters built like tanks will find themselves at the mercy of being one-shot by larger foes or stricken with elements that they may not be equipped for while even smaller scale foes still can prove to be a threat in greater numbers. As mentioned before, there are ways around specific boss fights to navigate to various locations in Elden Ring that would otherwise be gated off but the story itself is still locked behind certain bosses that must be defeated to continue. Thankfully FromSoftware has continued to hone their art with crafting fantastic boss battles as nearly every core storyline boss and hidden boss features a grand battle that focuses heavily on timing, learning an enemy’s attack patterns, and of course trying not to die a hundred times. As mentioned before, some mini-dungeons do recycle a bit too much and this is also true when it comes to boss enemies as many will appear numerous times throughout the game at this scale.

Visuals & Audio

It can easily be said that Elden Ring is one of the best looking games that FromSoftware has put out. While it may not be quite up to some open world games, the sheer level of density of detail located in various areas and scattered across the massive open world is stunning. There has long been a joke about “seeing a mountain and being able to climb it eventually” and in Elden Ring that is the truth, nearly every location seen and even some unseen can be traveled to and will feature some form of visual storytelling at the same time. The level of artistic detail and expression present is truly superb and something players will find joy with every new area they travel through. The characters and bosses do feature a variety of unique horrific designs as well though it is worth noting that many basic enemies do get reused far too often with little variety through most of the game.

While it may feature only a few speaking NPCs, the voice work is handled exceptionally well, especially during boss battles while the atmospheric sounds are handled quite well. The musical tracks are also handled nicely with a great sense of dread mixed into most boss themes.

Overall

Elden Ring may have broadened its scope and made things a bit more approachable through sheer variety of options, but FromSoftware haven’t lost their edge. Challenging difficulty to keep players on their toes mixed into a massive open world filled with everything from random NPCs that have map spanning questlines to plenty of world bosses that almost always feel amazing to battle against all with a signature storyline expected of FromSoftware, Elden Ring may still not be for everyone but it is certainly a game that must be played by fans of the genre and anyone willing to give it a shot.

Dawn of Ragnarök, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Third Expansion Kicks Off Year 2 of Post Launch Today

Unleash New Divine Powers in a Breath-Taking World of Contrasts and Surrealism. Embrace Your Destiny as Odin and Complete Your Legendary Viking Saga in the Dwarven Kingdom of Svartalfheim

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – March 10, 2022 – Today, Ubisoft announced that Assassin’s Creed® Valhalla’s third major expansion, Dawn of Ragnarök, is now available across all available platforms.  For the first time in an Assassin’s Creed game, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is getting a second year of content, starting with the most ambitious expansion in the history of the franchise: Dawn of Ragnarök. In addition, new seasonal content free for all players will continue to enrich the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla experience during this second year.

With development led by Ubisoft Sofia, in Dawn of Ragnarök Eivor must embrace their destiny as Odin, the Norse god of Battle and Wisdom. The dwarven kingdom of Svartalfheim is crumbling, and amid the chaos, Odin’s beloved son, Baldr, has been taken prisoner by the unkillable fire giant, Surtr. Players will be able to unleash new divine powers as they continue their legendary Viking saga by embarking on a desperate rescue quest through a mythological world of contrasts.

The expansion brings new features and content to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla:

  • Discover a fresh new gameplay system, allowing players to harness the powers of their enemies. These are the Powers, which can be used to match any gameplay style, including versatile combat and stealth options, exploration, and puzzle-solving. Players can take possession of the powers of fallen enemies and use them to shape-shift into a raven for spectacular assassinations, infuse their weapon with ice to unleash devasting strikes, or even resurrect defeated enemies to fight on their side.
  • Battle and defeat new enemies, among them are the fire giants from Muspelheim: the Muspels. They provide fresh gameplay challenges and encourage players to use the Powers to tackle them efficiently.
  • Explore the vast landscapes of Svartalfheim and uncover dwarven shelters that will serve as the starting point of Odin’s quest to rescue Baldr, acting as hubs for players progression.
  • Take on the Valkyries’ challenge in a new fighting arena, where players will be able to prove their combat prowess.
  • Enjoy a variety of new gear and weapons, including a new unique weapon type which allows special combos, a new divine quality level for all gear, and more customization options for Eivor’s tattoos, hair, and settlement decorations.

Dawn of Ragnarök is designed to offer a true progression for our existing players and is positioned as endgame content. The recommended power level to play the expansion is 340, but new players can still dive right into the expansion and experience Odin’s story. For Valhalla players that haven’t reached the power level of 340, they can boost their character’s stats and gear inside the Dawn of Ragnarök content.

Dawn of Ragnarök is available as a separate purchase for $59.95AUD for all owners of the main game. Dawn of Ragnarök can also be purchased as part of the Ragnarök Edition of the game, which includes the main game and the expansion; or as part of the Digital Complete Edition of the game, which includes the main game, the Season Pass*, the Ultimate Content Pack and Dawn of Ragnarök. All players purchasing Dawn of Ragnarök until April 9, 2022, will receive the Twilight Pack which will be immediately unlockable in the main game**. This exclusive bonus includes the Dellingr’s Envoy Raven Skin, the Havardr Lynx Mount, the Twilight Gear Set and the Algurnir Dane Axe Weapon***.

Dark Horse Comics will release ‘’Assassin’s Creed Valhalla – Forgotten Myths’’, a comic series written by Alexander Freed, illustrated by Martin Tunica, and colored by Michael Atiyeh. In this prequel to Dawn of Ragnarök, follow Baldr, the valiant son of Odin, on his quest to forge a lasting peace among the realms. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla – Forgotten Myths #1 (of three) will be available on March 16th, 2022.

With development led by Ubisoft Montreal****, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla offers players the captivating experience of playing as Eivor, a legendary Viking warrior, driven from Norway by endless wars and dwindling resources in ninth century AD. Xbox Celebrates International Women’s Day in Support of Women in Gaming

Xbox Celebrates International Women’s Day in Support of Women in Gaming

by Louise O’Connor, Executive Producer, Rare

In honour of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month 2022, Xbox will celebrate the important role of mentorship — to uplift and support the next generation of women in gaming. As a champion and member of the fellowship of the Women of Xbox UK initiative, I had the opportunity to help connect the community of women who work across our UK studios. This includes game designers, engineers, audio/sound experts, and producers to share their knowledge and experience with young women encouraging them to pursue a career in the gaming industry. One of the greatest joys I have found through mentoring other women is what I call the “Leveling up Moment” — when the culmination of their hard work and resilience meets with breakthrough and success.

We know that while according to the ESA, 45% of gamers identify as women, there is an underrepresentation of women characters in gaming. Additionally, among video game developers, only 30% identify as women globally. By increasing diversity and representation in the people who make games, we can create new and unique gaming experiences for everyone. While there is more work to do, at Xbox we are proud that women make up over half of our gaming leadership team and are forging the future of gaming and at Microsoft, women now represent 29.7% of the core global workforce. This is also true of my team at Rare, where half of our design and production team are women because of our investment in making inclusivity and diversity core to how we build teams, and we remain committed to this goal. It’s also imperative to continue to support women once they’re part of the industry, and at Xbox, the Women in Gaming group provides career development, networking opportunities, mentoring and more to encourage retention.

Mentorship and leading from a place of empathy encourages a culture of women uplifting and supporting other women, and I hope to inspire others to do the same. Xbox is committed to building a community where everyone is welcome to play, and to creating a space where it is safe to do so. It is in this spirit of mentorship that we hope to see more women become part of the games industry so that they can see themselves as the hero in the games they play and in their own lives.

Join us as Xbox celebrates the voices of women during International Women’s Day, Women’s History Month and beyond:

GTAV and GTA Online Pre-Loading Available Now, Plus New Details on GTA Online Career Builder, Migration Bonuses, and More

Pre-Load GTAV and GTA Online on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S – Plus Details on the New GTA Online Career Builder

Pre-loading for Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online is now available for those who’ve pre-ordered digitally through either the PlayStation 5 console store or Microsoft Store.

These new versions of GTAV and GTA Online launch on March 15 and feature new graphics modes including up to 4K resolution, a framerate of up to 60 frames per second, improved texture qualities, HDR options and ray tracing, faster loading times, immersive 3D audio, platform-specific features, and more.

Plus, you can transfer Story Mode progress from your PS4 or Xbox One now by uploading a save to the Rockstar Games Social Club, and you’ll be able to migrate your GTA Online character* on March 15. Those eager to continue their journey on the latest generation consoles will also get a fully converted Karin S95 souped up by the experts at Hao’s Special Works, along with a Hao’s Special Work Racing Outfit and set of new Chameleon paints usable on all vehicles.

The Career Builder

As mentioned last week, GTA Online on the newest generation of consoles will feature the Career Builder. This is designed to give new players — or anyone who wants to reset their character and get a fresh start — a helpful leg-up in the criminal world of Southern San Andreas.

With the Career Builder, you’ll enter GTA Online with a business property, a vehicle, and a weapon — with room to add useful upgrades and a little extra GTA$ to begin.

Choose from a selection of the most popular criminal career paths in GTA Online: Biker, Executive, Nightclub Owner, or Gunrunner. From there you’ll receive a GTA$4,000,000 bankroll to put towards acquiring the essentials. Picking one of these four careers will ensure you have a business property and a huge range of missions and gameplay to embark upon immediately — and you can of course expand and dabble in new careers as you progress.

After selecting a career, use your newfound GTA$4M windfall to acquire start-up essentials from across a wide range of properties, vehicles, and weapons. You can select from the basics — a non-upgraded business property, alongside a simple weapon and vehicle combination — or you can opt for business properties complete with upgrades and customizations, high-end vehicles, and enough weapons to fill a Gun Locker. It all depends on how you want to spend your dispensation, and you can bring a maximum of GTA$1,000,000 from this with you into GTA Online.

Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online will be available digitally on March 15 through the PlayStation 5 console store and the Microsoft Store, with physical releases coming in April. Stay tuned for more details.

*For GTA Online platform migrations, purchased GTA$ can only be transferred between platforms of the same family (PS4 to PS5, Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S). All earned GTA$ will transfer regardless of platform.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands Reveals Endgame Chaos Chamber Experience

New trailer shows off endlessly replayable dungeon that changes with every run

Today, 2K and Gearbox Software unveiled Chaos Chamber, the endlessly replayable core endgame experience for Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands®. Within the mythical Chaos Chamber is an ever-shifting portal into a randomized dungeon, full of unique variables, killer enemies, and methods to make your run more or less challenging, depending on how brave you’re feeling.

Check out the new trailer below for a direct look at the Chaos Chamber and the latest Dev Diary for perspectives from the Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands development team on the trials awaiting players, how to get a leg up against enemies, and more.

A Chaos Chamber run consists of three randomized dungeon rooms, a mini-boss fight, three more dungeon rooms, and a main boss fight. Players will work through the Chaos Chamber, selecting between two portals after each room to determine what awaits in the next. Additional factors include:

  • Crystals: During the Chaos Chamber run, players can collect and utilize Crystals to earn more rewards. Players can amass Crystals by smashing a crystalline, rainbow-glowing die that spawns after completing a room, and by completing optional side objectives that are randomly assigned to each room;
  • Blessings: By collecting enough Crystals to activate an altar, players can receive Blessings, ranging from increased critical damage or ammo capacity, to melee attack and movement speed buffs, and more;
  • Curses: The polar opposite of Blessings, Curses are debuffs that last the rest of the run and can make it that much harder for players to survive—but with higher risk comes better rewards.

After completing the Chaos Chamber, a chest full of desirable loot for the taking awaits in the Loot of Chaos area. You’ll also earn Moon Orbs, an in-game currency you can spend at an Enchantment Re-roller station to fine-tune your favourite gear. For dedicated loot grinders though, the real Chaos Chamber payout might be hiding in the bellies of the spined, slightly disturbing rabbit statues that will barf up gear when fed enough Crystals.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands will launch on March 25, 2022 across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation®5, PlayStation®4, and PC via the Epic Games Store exclusively at launch, and on other PC digital storefronts later in 2022. Pre-orders are now available across all launch platforms, and players can also visit playwonderlands.com to register for the game’s newsletter.

Developed by Gearbox Entertainment, the OFLC rating for Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is M. For screenshots, key art, and other visual assets, please visit newsroom-anz.2k.com.
