Interview with CaffeineCraft at Anime Magic! 2022

This past weekend during our time at Anime Magic! 2022 we had some time to sit down and interview CaffeineCraft, a cosplayer from Chicago who is entirely self taught and has been cosplaying and competing in masquerades for over ten years. Starting with sewing before moving into foam smithing, make-up, and 3D printing. His skill and attention to detail have won him various awards over the years.

In the interview, found below, we ask about his process in developing a cosplay outfit, his favorite materials to use, and even a bit about what got him into cosplaying all while he wears his most recent creation, an extensively detailed, and difficult to sit in, take on the Mizutsune armor from Monster Hunter.

Kayleigh McKee Interview at Anime Magic! 2022

During the Anime Magic! 2022 event held this past weekend we had a chance to sit down and interview voice actress Kayleigh McKee who has handled the voice of Pina from Beastars, Yuta from Jujutsu Kaisen 0, and Testament from Guilty Gear Strive.

As one of the few transgender women in voice acting she had plenty to say about her time as a voice actress, her favorite roles, and more including a brief sample of her range as a voice actress. The video for the interview can be found below and as for the event, Anime Magic! is set to return sometime next year in 2023 though no set date has been announced at this time.

Anime Magic! 2022 Cosplay Masquerade Contest

Just like every good anime convention this past weekend’s Anime Magic! 2022 convention at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center featured a cosplay masquerade that allowed those who wished to participate have their cosplay costumes judged in various skill levels ranging from novice to master.

We recorded this cosplay masquerade and were able to watch numerous competitors show off their costumes on stage and make various poses as well as see just who the judges thought were their favorites.

This includes cosplayers who participated in an earlier smaller “hallway” competition before the final winners were revealed. Check out the full video below to see just who won each category.

Anime Magic 2022 Opening Ceremony

This past weekend we stopped in at the Anime Magic! 2022 convention held at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center and after spending plenty of time looking around, doing a bit of shopping, and interviewing guests that we will have posted shortly we stopped in to see the opening ceremony for this year’s events.

The full video of the opening ceremony can be found below where many of the panel guests, cosplay judges, professional voice actors, and more are introduced though it is worth noting that the lighting situation was not the best and as a result the video may appear a bit rough looking at times.

Currently Anime Magic! is set to return sometime in 2023 though no set date has been announced at this time.

Xbox Celebrates Indigenous Peoples of the World

Today, and throughout the year, Xbox is celebrating the rich histories of Indigenous peoples all over the world for International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.

Representation is important. We say this throughout the year for all underrepresented communities, but it’s particularly important for the Indigenous community. Each tribe has a unique style to their artwork as well as medium (e.g. basketry).

We worked with Indigenous artists across the world to redesign the Xbox logo in a way that was authentic to them and their tribes. In Australia and New Zealand, Xbox ANZ partnered up with Rubii Red, and Haimona Maruera and Dillon King respectively.

“The work is my interpretation of connection, community, and journey. A lot of my work reflects those themes, because as a First Nations woman, they are important to me and have helped shape me into the person I am today. I’m on a journey, learning about who I am by connecting to the community and learning more about my culture from my Elders,” said Rubii, who produced a stylized logo in the traditional Lama Lama style.

Haimona and Dillon created an Xbox Sphere that followed traditional Māori styling. “As proud descendants of Ngāti Ruanui, Te Āti Haunui-ā-Pāpārangi, Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga and Ngāti Kahungunu ki Te Wairoa, this design derives from the Māori atua (god) named Māui. Māui was the infamous atua known by several names such as Māui- Pōtiki (the last born), Māui-Tinihanga (the mischief), Māui-Tikitiki-a-Taranga (the topknot o Taranga), and Māui-te-whare-kino (the house of trouble). This infamous atua brought the inquisitive and the intellectual attributes to our world. This Xbox logo represents the key art functions of Te Ao Māori, which we practice as guardians of our culture and identity,” says Haimona.

“This sphere design depicts multiple art forms that the indigenous people of Aotearoa uphold and practice as carriers and guardians of our culture and identity.”

Xbox will be taking additional initiatives to celebrate Indigenous peoples around the world throughout the rest of the year. To learn more about these initiatives, or to see all of the designs from our talented Indigenous partners, head over to Xbox Wire.
