“We are thrilled to partner with Wētā Workshop to publish a game set in such an extraordinary and celebrated universe,” said Michael Worosz, Chief Strategy Officer, Take-Two Interactive, and Head of Private Division. “The Lord of the Rings IP is home to so many remarkable stories, and no entity is better equipped than the team at Wētā Workshop to create a distinctive, new Middle-earth gaming experience.”

“It’s a privilege to create a new game set in Middle-earth, especially one that’s so different from what fans have played previously,” said Amie Wolken, Head of Interactive at Wētā Workshop. “As fans ourselves, we’re excited for gamers to explore Middle-earth in a way they never have before, and introduce new fans to the magic of The Lord of the Rings.”

This title is in early development and does not yet have an announced release date. It is expected to launch during Take-Two’s Fiscal Year 2024. Private Division and Wētā Workshop look forward to sharing more details about this game in the future.

To the Stars Invites Tourists into the Unknown Q2 2023

Sign up for the Most Exciting Space Tour in the Galaxy! (Survival Not Guaranteed)

SYDNEY – 15 August 2022 – To the Stars, the tactical roguelike deck-builder from developer Stellar Cartography and publisher Blowfish Studios, adds Earth to the itinerary along with Nintendo Switch, PC and Mac via Steam in Q2 2023.

What’s a disgraced captain of a renowned treasure-hunting brigade to do when they fail to make a name for themselves? Open a universe-wide touring service, of course! Surf a procedurally generated sea of stars while recruiting a group of…quirky, yet talented alien crewmates. Utilize their distinct abilities to effectively manage the voyages ahead and, most importantly, ensure guests have a great time aboard your spaceship.

The galaxy is full of threats, so cruise cautiously and keep an eye out for territorial tyrants and rival tour agencies. Ready a deck with an elite arsenal of aliens, weapons, bonuses, abilities, and ships to safely ferry passengers through the final frontier. Prepare for real-time strategy battles – deploy Neela the Great, the best darn pilot in the galaxy, Zelbob, the slyest smuggler in the sector, and more colorful characters to eliminate galactic threats with style.

Tons of randomized scenarios will require the quick thinking of a true con artist, the expert guidance of a captain, or simply the raw PEW PEW SMASH power of a seasoned celestial barbarian – whichever makes more sense at the time. Sustain a diverse crew to guarantee passenger safety and keep the business thriving.

To the Stars is a fun mesh of deck-building card games and tactical planet hopping adventures,” said Ido Yehieli, Founder, Stellar Cartography. “Guides will discover strange new worlds, meet cute aliens, and take on exciting battles whilst giving a flock of gullible loveable tourists the space tour of a lifetime!”

Video Review

Overview

Cult of the Lamb is a rogue-lite/management sim hybrid. After being saved from death, players are tasked as the new prophet of an imprisoned being. A second chance at life comes at a cost though, as players will need to build a cult to worship the being and slash their way through the four bosses keeping the being in chains.

Story

Rogue-lites have a pretty low bar for storytelling, and Cult of the Lamb isn’t raising the bar to new heights. Instead, it simply meets the standards for the genre with its occasional dialogue that slowly hammers out the story over many deaths. The writing is decent, but everything feels more like flavour than actual content to chew on.

Gameplay

Cult of the Lamb is a rogue-lite featuring a gameplay loop of runs through a series of randomly generated rooms followed by a period of cult management. Each run gives the player a randomly selected weapon and a magical spell referred to as a curse. As players proceed through the levels, they’ll acquire buffs in the form of tarot cards. If the player dies and prematurely ends the run, they will be penalized with the loss of some of the items collected in the run and their follower’s faith will waver. The punishment system is very well balanced. There’s enough sting to encourage players to use the escape feature as necessary, but the pain isn’t so severe that it’ll create a snowball effect that is difficult to break out of.

Combat is simple, but tightly executed. There are no complicated attack combinations to speak of, the game consists simply of physical attacks, limited magical curses, and dodge rolls. The dodge mechanic feels pretty good. Attacks are clearly telegraphed with a wind-up animation and a flashing white animation. My only issue with the system is that there are a lot of flashing on the screen by default and enemies can be a little small, so spotting an enemy ready to strike can be a little difficult in the chaos. I would love to see an accessibility option added to the game that lets players customize the flashing colour so it can be more easily seen.

There is a satisfying variety of weapons and curses for players to master, with more being unlocked as the game progresses. I like that the game forces players to master all the available weapons instead of encouraging them to pick a favoured weapon style and run with it all the time. Considering the combat is so simple, it keeps each run fresh and adds another factor into the equation when players decide if they should bail out of a run early.

The management sim surprised me the most with its depth. Initially, it felt lightweight, and I fully expected the worst. As I progressed, I realized the game has plenty of opportunities for players willing to plan out their doctrine choices and ritual use for the long term to maximize productivity and resource generation. The developers did a great job hitting the Goldilocks zone where there is just enough complexity to be captivating without overshadowing the rogue-lite portion of the game.

The game does an excellent job leaning hard into the cult theme. Fans of cult documentaries will recognize plenty of tongue in cheek references to stereotypical cult behaviour woven into the game’s mechanics. The doctrine choices are a decent mix of benevolent, evil, and ambiguous behaviour. It’s nice that the developers have opted to have some ambiguity, instead of going for the poles for every choice.

The game is accessible to all skill levels. Due to its rogue-lite nature, many skill gaps can be overcome with some extra grinding to arm players with extra bonuses. For the bigger skill gaps, there are four difficult settings that can be changed at any time. Furthermore, the mechanics are balanced enough that choosing the wrong doctrine or dying several times in a row isn’t going to dig the player into a hole they can’t get themselves out of.

The controls are solid. They are tight and responsive. The game is designed for a controller, and I’m not the biggest fan of the default layout. The attack is bound to X on an Xbox controller, and dodge is bound to B. A is used as the interact key but is easier to hit for due to its closer proximity. There is an alternate layout that binds dodge to A, but it does cause some issues where some things use X as the use key and other things using A compared to the default layout where everything is bound to A.

Visuals

The visuals are excellent. Its cute art style contrasts nicely against the violent nature of the game and the cult theme. The enemy design is eye catching, and the animations are solid.

Audio

The audio experience is enjoyable. The sound effects are great. The soundtrack is a pleasant accompaniment to the game as it hits all the right emotional notes without being distracting. My only complaint is I wish there was a different song that is more mellow for previously cleared rooms.

Overall

Cult of the Lamb is a stunning example of a game that eschews complexity in favour of doing the simple things well. The entire game is tightly executed with a surprising amount of depth considering its simplicity. While there are some small issues here or there holding it back from perfection, Cult of the Lamb is a must play for fans of rogue-lites and management sims.

Triple Topping announces Dead Pets Unleashed

Get ready to release your inner demon with this feminist punk rock slice-of-life

17 August 2022 – Game developer Triple Topping (Welcome to Elk) has unveiled its upcoming game, Dead Pets Unleashed, for PC and Mac platforms. Dead Pets Unleashed is a punk rock story about a band making one last effort to get big or grow up. Triple Topping has just launched a Kickstarter for Dead Pets Unleashed and a playable demo is available on Steam. Those wanting to follow and support the game’s progress can register on Kickstarter. Dead Pet’s Unleashed will also have a playable demo at the Indie Arena Booth at Gamescom (August 24-28).

Dead Pets Unleashed follows the punk rock band Dead Pets, who have been in the music scene for a decade. Set in the world of Ether, Gordy and the band live in New Void City. An entirely new world, the planet is inhabited by different species of demons. Players will decide if Gordy, the band’s lead singer, will follow her big plans to get the band’s big break or decide to put away childish things after turning 30. While the game does deal with some heavy topics, Dead Pets Unleashed will run players through several fun slice-of-life mini games, let them listen to a real punk rock EP played live during the game, and engage in Gordy’s daily schedule to determine the future of the band.

Inspired by cartoons Bojack Horseman and Tuca and Bertie’s colorful, surreal worlds, complicated adult friendships, and zany, offbeat humor. At its core, Dead Pets Unleashed is a game about friendship. The band have all been friends for a very long time, and the game explores how to manage old friendships that are taking different paths.

Being about a band, music is incredibly important to the game. However the punk rock music of the game isn’t too heavy, and is intended to be enjoyed by everyone with other music genres also intertwined in the game. You can listen to Dead Pet’s full single featured in the trailer, I Own My Smile. Inspired by female-fronted punk bands like Bikini Kill and Bratmobile, I Own My Smile is Gordy’s ode to catcallers.

Check out the song Dead Pets – I Own My Smile

For more information on Dead Pets Unleashed, check out the game’s Kickstarter page, playable demo, Triple Topping’s website or follow along on Twitter. The game will also be available to preview at the Indie Arena Booth for those heading to Gamescom from August 24-28.

Sword and Fairy: Together Forever Review

Sword and Fairy: Together Forever

Developer: Softstar Technology
Publisher: Eastasiasoft
Platform: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 (Reviewed)
Release Date: Available Now
Price: $39.99 – Available Here

Overview

For many RPG fans in the West the name of Sword and Fairy would mean absolutely nothing to them despite the fact that the franchise, developed by Taiwan based Softstar, is perhaps one of the biggest RPGs of all time in China. There is a relatively good reason for that however as this series, despite starting in 1995, has almost never seen a release in English outside of a PC release of the sixth entry and now finally a console release of the seventh entry in the series in the form of Sword and Fairy: Together Forever. Will being a uniquely developed RPG bring something new to the table for RPG fans or is Sword and Fairy: Together Forever still too rough around the edges for a global stage?

Story

There is a fairly solid reason that Sword and Fairy: Together Forever has dropped the number from its title, besides making it a bit more appealing for newcomers to try out the game, and that happens to be the fact that for the most part players can enjoy most of what the storyline has to offer without any prior knowledge to the series. There are certain elements that may be a bit rough around the edges and never feel truly fleshed out but those worried that they may simply find themselves lost shouldn’t worry too much here.

Qingshu has spent her life training to protect her village from various monsters that may be lurking outside the woods and as a member of the Mingshu sect who is blessed with a spirit beast she is quite adept at it. That is until one day when she encounters a boy being attacked by a monster that she cannot hope to defeat only for the mysterious but wounded Xiu Wu to step in and help her. Xiu Wu, a deity in humanoid form, was struck down by a demon lord and forced into the human realm during a chaotic battle and now players quickly find themselves embroiled in a conflict that threatens to rip apart the entire world and doom all three forces, humans, deities, and demons, to destruction.

Without going any further, players should already have a bit of a glimpse at just how in-depth Sword and Fairy: Together Forever‘s storyline can be and it only gets more dense from then on. This is partially due to an incredibly slow start and the fact that the game makes frequent use of lengthy cut-scenes and dialogue sections that often dwarf the actual moments of gameplay that take place between them. Nearly every aspect of the story’s lore is explained, be it through a random textbook or aforementioned cut-scene, but don’t expect an incredibly interesting story all the same. In fact despite the game’s depth, the actual core storyline is very predictable once  plot points start to fall into place though it is saved a bit by just how deep the Chinese mythology goes and the actual characters that make up the player’s party.

The four main characters that players will eventually get in their party play off one another so well that it truly is a delight anytime the story spends time focusing on their interactions. This includes growth and development as the story progresses, keeping things feeling fresh even when the core story drags along. That being said, it is worth noting that no matter how impressive the original writing may have been, the English translation is incredibly rough in places and almost incomprehensible in others. While the core storyline is mostly translated okay, perhaps a bit too literally in some cases, there are countless cases where character dialogue, menu descriptions, and even instructions have been translated so poorly they go from being minor distractions to frustrations that plague nearly every written word in this Chinese voiced game.

Gameplay

For the first time in the series’ history, Sword and Fairy: Together Forever utilizes an action based combat system instead of a turn-based system and while this may not mean much to those unfamiliar with the franchise, it does mean that the developers aren’t quite as skilled at it as one would hope but thankfully they have pulled it off quite well. While exploring and traveling through the game players will freely roam around areas with their party of up to four characters and freely utilize their various attacks, skills, and magical attacks to take down foes. This is done through a fairly simple but entertaining combination of light and heavy attacks that can be strung together to dish out various special combos that change depending on the character being controlled as well as each characters’ special abilities.

While stringing together combo attacks will make up most of the game’s combat players can also make use of up to eight abilities that can be mapped to R2 + the four face buttons. These abilities are fairly flashy and can deal tons of damage, though unfortunately they aren’t organized and labeled the best when it comes to healing, buffing, or simply dealing damage and even then a few of these abilities are also incredibly similar to one another. It is also nice to note that magical attacks that deal massive amounts of damage can also be unleashed on foes and can be vital to use in boss battles but otherwise players will find that, for the most part, many fights won’t even require extensive knowledge of the combat system.

This is due to the fact that while the combat is fun and hectic at the same time, it is also incredibly easy to the point of disappointment outside of a few challenging boss fights that require unique elements to take down. As a result players can’t make the most out of what the game’s combat system has to offer and it also doesn’t help that ally AI is incredibly dumb more often than not as they rarely use their special moves properly and, in more than a few cases, simply deal basic damage unless players swap to them and utilize their abilities.

Outside of the game’s combat players will find that the game does try and vary things up from time to time by having various stealth sections as well as a variety of mini-games and little distractions but don’t really offer too much enjoyment compared to actual combat. On the other hand exploring the world can be quite fun, especially since there is a wide variety of areas to travel through and despite the game’s linear nature there are plenty to explore in most locations as well as ingredients that can be collected and cooked together for some temporary stat boosts. Unfortunately the same cannot be said regarding the game’s incredibly generic side quests that have perhaps some of the worst writing in the game, with a few being almost incomprehensible if not for the objective markers and even then most simply boil down to slaying certain demons, fetch quests, or talking to another character.

Visuals & Audio

Playing on the PlayStation 5 Sword and Fairy: Together Forever can often look quite amazing at times, especially in lusher more detailed environments. On the other hand, there are areas so simply designed and muted in nature that they look as if they were taken from a completely different game. The same can be said in regards to the character designs as their models are handled well but feature no real facial animations. As for the monsters and combat, thankfully the game features a ton of monster variety especially when it comes to boss design and the frantic combat is always a highlight and never experiences any slowdown on console.

As mentioned before, this game makes use of only the original Chinese voice track which is something a bit unique for an Eastern RPG but unfortunately the development team chose to accompany it with some incredibly small and non-adjustable subtitle font making it easy to miss dialogue. The soundtrack that accompanies the game features a nice variety of tracks as well as some truly outstanding instrumental pieces that feel quite unique.

Overall

Sword and Fairy: Together Forever is in a bit of a strange place as not only does it have to deal with being nearly the first entry for most players into a long running series but it also fails to capitalize on most of its strongest elements. Players will find that the characters in the storyline are written quite well but the story itself, despite having some impressively deep lore, is rather predictable and suffers from horrible localization just like its fun combat is easy to learn but also lacks any real challenge to pit players against. This makes this Chinese RPG one that has plenty of charm at times but also plenty of flaws that hamper the experience.

Eclipse Crisis Event Plunges Operators in the Dark in Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction

Eclipse Crisis Event Plunges Operators in the Dark in Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six® Extraction

Evade detection in new Crisis Event that brings stealth-oriented gameplay, a new Operator, and more!

Sydney, Australia — August 12, 2022 — Today, Ubisoft announced Rainbow Six Extraction’s third Crisis Event, Eclipse, is now available. In addition to the content from the last two Crisis Events, this limited-time event continues to add more postlaunch content for players to enjoy. Eclipse forces Operators into partial darkness as they venture into three sub-zones against a new threat.

As Operators dive deeper into the Truth or Consequences map, they will encounter the source of the darkness: the Neoplasm, a threat which sends out pulses that detect movement within a radius. In each sub-zone, players must weaken the Neoplasm with a stealthy takedown. If movement is detected, the Neoplasm will flee to the next sub-zone, making the next encounter increasingly difficult.

To progress from sub-zone to sub-zone, players will have to restore power to a generator while facing an onslaught of Archæans. The crisis climaxes in the third sub-zone, where players must eliminate the Neoplasm for good and make it to the extraction point safely.

Alongside Eclipse – Rainbow Six Operator Echo joins the REACT Team today. Known for his efficiency in gathering intel, Echo will be a valuable addition to the Rainbow Six Extraction roster both in Eclipse and the main game. Echo’s Yokai drone transmits a video feed to him and can fire ultrasonic bursts that disorients all targets it hits.

A new piece of REACT tech, the Aura Grenade, is also available for players to unlock. The Aura Grenade can be unlocked by completing the quest, ‘Stealth Kill 50 Archæans,’ and can be completed in any game mode. This new piece of REACT tech can lure Archæans and be remotely detonated to obliterate or stun enemies. It can also self-detonate after a set amount of time.

Overall, players can discover more exciting content as they delve deeper into the Eclipse event

  • The New Aura Grenade REACT Tech
  • The New Operator Echo
  • New cosmetic items
  • The New Neoplasm enemy
  • Themed Charms for players to keep
  • Extra XP towards Milestone Progression

Eclipse is the newest content added to Rainbow Six Extraction, and players can look forward to more in the future. Players can jump in now with their squad via Game Pass on Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One, and Windows PC, as well as on PlayStation®5, PlayStation®4, Stadia, Amazon Luna, Ubisoft+, the Ubisoft Store, and the Epic Games Store.
