Airborne Kingdom: The Lost Tundra Free Update Drops the Chill City-Builder’s Temp Down to Freezing

The Wandering Band adds challenging Tundra biome in new DLC to the acclaimed flying city builder

August 16, 2022 – The Wandering Band’s BAFTA-nominated Airborne Kingdom is often described as a chill city-building experience. And it’s about to get chill-ier with the Airborne Kingdom: The Lost Tundra update. This free DLC, available on Monday, September 19, 2022, introduces a frosty new biome, which presents players with the most difficult challenge in the game yet. The Lost Tundra is filled with mysteries and surprises – and long-forgotten secrets that have been claimed by its inhospitably frigid climate. Those who can’t keep their kingdoms from freezing over are destined to follow the same fate.

Airborne Kingdom: The Lost Tundra is designed with experienced players in mind. The Lost Tundra is open for exploration even for players who haven’t completed the game, but it will be challenging. Food, water, and coal resources aren’t present in the Lost Tundra, and maintaining the kingdom is a difficult task. To make matters worse, the temperature takes a toll on the kingdom’s very structure, freezing parts and lowering their efficiency. The effects can be mitigated with new furnace structures but at the cost of resources and additional weight. Airborne Kingdom: The Lost Tundra requires that players reevaluate how they approach nearly every facet of kingdom construction and maintenance.

The challenge is accompanied by great rewards, too. Hidden locations unlock gorgeous new cosmetics and customizations, rewarding those brave and clever enough to survive this desolate new frontier.

The Airborne Kingdom: The Lost Tundra update will be available September 19 on PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, and PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch consoles.

Thymesia Review

Thymesia

Release Date: 18 Aug 2022
Price: $29.99 USD – Available Here

Overview

As Peter Griffin would say – “you know what really grinds my gears?”. Irresponsible labeling of games. Now you might say “wow that sounds super specific, almost like you’re trying to segue into something”. And you would be right. There is one particular label that really grinds my gears. Soulslike. Is the game a bit challenging? Yep, then it’s soulslike. Does it follow the rule of “show, don’t tell”? It’s pretty much the Dark Souls of….soulslike games, I guess. And it even got to the point where soulslike is being used for marketing purposes for games that don’t really deserve it.

And the abundance of that is exactly what made me notice Thymesia. No description of soulslike on the store page or in gameplay trailers. Yet, the game does inherit a lot from acclaimed FromSoft games. A brooding protagonist, medieval atmosphere, punishing gameplay, and so on. So far the first impressions seem promising, but let’s see what’s actually behind the hood.

Story

As they say, the once thriving Kingdom of Hermes has fallen to an age of calamity. So-called calamity is reminiscent of the dark middle ages, according to the tutorial area at least. Fire, destruction, abandoned homes, sick and dead on the streets. Lovely. You play as a plague doctor called Corvus. Although your medical practice is more dependent on killing than saving lives (just like actual plague doctors, hah!). Our Corvus also suffers from amnesia. The only cure for him seems to be to explore the punishing Kingdom of Hermes, unraveling more secrets and regaining his memory. There is also a small army of monsters and occasional bosses that we need to push through, but that’s really no big deal to us. Right?

Gameplay

One thing is certain – Thymesia is punishing. Even in that short tutorial area, you might die once or twice to that first boss. It’s also easy to get overwhelmed by enemies if you’re not careful. Also, enemies seem a bit smarter compared to usual games from this genre so they won’t be too shy to stunlock you and corner you whenever possible. They play dirty but so can you. To do that efficiently, you really need to understand the unique mechanics of this game. Spamming the attack key won’t get you far. All enemies heal over time and they’re not just gonna stand there as you pummel them. Your normal attack is there to chip away some health from them and inflict plague damage. Unless you bring down the health all the way down with normal attacks before they heal back up, you won’t get far in the game. That’s where your heavy attack comes in. It’s there to take away a big portion of their health that you destroyed with regular attacks so they can’t heal back up. So the usual winning strategy would be a regular attack, regular attack, regular attack, heavy attack, rinse and repeat.

But wait, we’re not done with the enemies just yet. Every once in a while they might throw a heavy attack at you that’s hard to block but easy to interrupt if you time it right (think of it as a parry mechanic of this game). Defeating certain enemies by holding down heavy attacks while they’re out of health will also take away their weapon and give it to you. Although it’s one-time use only, it can inflict a lot of damage on enemies and it’s great for crowd control. You also have your usual ingredients for a soulslike RPG – leveling up stats, allocation skill points, and learning a lot about the game through environmental storytelling.

Visuals

The level design in Thymesia is remarkable and it does not disappoint. Every playable area is filled with shortcuts, secret passages, hidden items, and mini-bosses. Though the visuals can be a bit monochromatic to the point where you might name certain places in the game as “the green area”, “orange area” and so on. I am a tad disappointed in the lack of variety when it comes to enemies. You won’t have to get far in the game to see most of the bestiary of Thymesia even though mini-bosses and bosses are quite distinct and memorable.

Audio

The audio segment of the game is nothing to write home about. Voice acting is pretty much nonexistent and I expected a lot more emphasis on environmental sounds. You know, something else besides the frequent grunts and moans of the enemies. For the most part, you are the composer. Occasional silence is broken by your symphony of slashes and executing enemies. It is a shame because for this kind of game audio design is a big part of the experience that could very well complement the visual and world-building.

Overall

Thymesia does not run away from its influences. It’s pretty apparent where it draws most of the inspiration. If you’re willing to look past its budgetary constraints, you might end up with an unpolished gem here. It’s not easy to get into right away and it falls flat in some areas. Combat can be a bit choppy at times, audio leaves a lot to be desired and there is a wavy difficulty curve throughout the game (you might speed run through some areas while others will be a tough nut to crack). With all that said, Thymesia definitely brings something new to the table. There is a lot of effort put here, a lot of love, and while might not be love at first sight it is certainly genuine.

Capsule Computers review guidelines can be found here.

Thymesia Gameplay

In this gameplay of Thymesia, we finish a short tutorial section, take down a boss and explore the fabled Sea of Trees area.

Thymesia is a gruelling action-RPG with fast-paced combat and an intricate plague weapon system. In a kingdom where death spreads, play as a mysterious character known by the code name “Corvus”. Prey upon your enemies, wield the power of disease and find the truth in your own memories.

Story details you need to know before playing God of War Ragnarök

PlayStation Australia invites players to relive the epic story of God of War (2018) ahead of the launch of God of War Ragnarök on Playstation on November 9.

Ahead of the release, the amazing Felicia Day and the Smartest Man Alive, Mimir, tell the story of Kratos and Atreus so far in the “Myths of Midgard”.

Before you watch, beware – there are spoilers ahead! Check out the trailer here.

God of War (2018) Story Recap

  • God of War began with the funeral of Faye, mother to Atreus and wife of Kratos. Her last request begins this epic journey, to have her ashes scattered on the highest peak in all the realms.

The Father

  • Kratos, still haunted by his bloody past as the Ghost of Sparta, must now cope with the death of his wife while learning how to be the father his son needs.

The Son

  • Atreus is a young boy dealing with the sudden loss of his mother and a cold, distant father. He wants nothing more than to fulfil his mother’s final wish and prove he is strong to his father.

Arrival of the Stranger

  • Baldur, a mysterious stranger who feels no pain, is sent by Odin to investigate Kratos and Atreus, leading to an earth-rending battle. It seems that a pantheon of gods knows more about Kratos than his own son.

Unexpected friends in unexpected places

  • Kratos and Atreus begin their journey to what they think is the tallest mountain in their realm, and meet legendary dwarven blacksmiths Brok and Sindri.
  • They also encounter the mysterious Witch of the Woods, who shows them how to use the Bifröst to travel between the Nine Realms. The Witch is later revealed to be Freya, mother of Baldur and exiled wife of Odin.

Mission accomplished! Or is it? (It’s not)

  • As father and son reach the mountains’ peak they meet Mimir, self-titled Smartest Man Alive, who reveals to Atreus and Kratos that the highest peak in the Realms is in the inaccessible realm of Jötunheim, meaning their journey is only just beginning.

Sons of Thor

  • With a newly released Mimir (or at least his head) in tow, Kratos and Atreus are ambushed by Thor’s sons, Magni and Modi, on their journey toward Jötunheim.
  • Kratos overcomes Magni but Modi later returns and subdues Kratos, triggering Atreus’ unfound Spartan Rage ability.

The price of secrets

  • Kratos takes an unconscious and sick Atreus to Freya in the hope she can wake him. Freya reveals Atreus’ sickness is caused by the conflict between his nature as a god and his ignorance of that fact.
  • To save his son, Kratos must return to his past home and retrieve the Blades of Chaos, thereby acknowledging his past as the God of War.
  • After saving Atreus with Freya’s help, Kratos reveals to the boy his true nature as a god.

Sins of the Mother

  • Having gathered the tools to make a portal to Jötunheim, Kratos, Atreus, and Mimir return once again to the peak of Midgard to travel to the realm of the Giants.
  • As they arrive, they are ambushed by Baldur, leading to an epic, realm-jumping battle where Baldur learns that his invulnerability comes from a spell cast by his mother to protect him from a prophesied murder.

Death of a god

  • As Kratos and Atreus attempt to enter Jötunheim on Mimir’s guidance they are again ambushed by Baldur, but this time Freya intervenes.
  • Working together in perfect unison, Kratos and Atreus destroy the spell giving Baldur invulnerability and eventually best Baldur.
  • Kratos spares Baldur’s life, knowing the pain Freya will feel over losing her child. But, as payment for his years of torment, Baldur uses his last strength to strangle Freya.
  • Kratos, seeing his own bloody mistakes about to be repeated by Baldur, steps in to save Freya’s life by killing her son. Unable to accept his death, Freya cradles the dead body of Baldur while swearing vengeance upon Kratos for taking away her only child, even if it meant that she would live.

The highest peak in all the realms

  • Finally able to make the journey to Jötunheim with the help of Mimir’s Bifröst eyes, Kratos and Atreus reach a Giant temple – one that has their entire journey carved into the walls
  • Atreus finally uncovers the full truth of his heritage, that he is not only part god and part mortal, he is part Giant as well. His mother Faye was a giant herself.
  • Atreus had two names, one was given to him by his father and the other, his mother. The name Faye had bestowed upon him was Loki.

Fimbulwinter has fallen

  • As they return home to Midgard, Mimir warns them that the death of Baldur means that the first event said to mark the arrival of Ragnarök has come to pass.
  • Kratos and Atreus now find themselves at the centre of a prophecy that has foretold the complete upheaval of the Nine Realms and a battle so great it results in the deaths of many Aesir gods including Odin and Thor.

Set sail across the Astral Plane in Spelljammer: Adventures in Space

A thrilling space-based adventure setting for the world’s greatest roleplaying game

Wizards of the Coast today released Spelljammer: Adventures in Space, the latest campaign for the world’s most popular tabletop role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons (D&D). A glorious reimagining of the classic setting first introduced for 2nd edition, Adventures in Space builds on the thrill of nautical exploration by sailing through the Astral Plane, home of the stars, gateways to heavens and miniature giant space hamsters! It will feature three hardcover books plus game accessories and is available on Amazon AU or at local gaming retailers.

Voyage across the Astral Sea aboard a spelljammer, a magnificent flying vessel built to traverse interplanetary space. In a realm of endless possibility, Adventures in Space offers a thrilling new setting for both seasoned and new spacefarers. Adventurers can soar across the silver oceans of Wildspace, explore a giant citadel built on an asteroid, and discover mysteries behind the decaying remnants of gods floating in the ether.

Spelljammer: Adventures in Space contains a double-sided poster map of the campaign’s hub city, the Rock of Bral, and a sturdy four-panel Dungeon Master’s screen designed for use with the following set books (with additional alternate-style covers available only through local game stores):

The Astral Adventurer’s Guide

The Astral Sea awaits

A must-have for spacefarers from all corners of the multiverse, The Astral Adventurer’s Guide is a 64-page hardcover book detailing the Astral Plane setting, aimed at players and Dungeons Masters to acquaint themselves with everything they need to run a campaign within the Astral Plane.

Contains: Space-based character races, spells, magic items, spelljammer ship deck plans and more.

Boo’s Astral Menagerie

A cosmic compendium

Exploring a cosmic realm teeming with life will be difficult for adventurers who don’t possess Boo’s Astral Menagerie, a 64-page hardcover book that serves as a detailed bestiary for Dungeon Masters.

Contains: In-game statistics and descriptions for over 60 creatures, including astral elves, lunar and solar dragons, murder comets, space clowns, and more.

Light of Xaryxis

A spacefaring saga

Designed for characters levelled five to eight, Light of Xaryxis is a thrilling multi-episode campaign that will sweep players on a journey through Wildspace and the Astral Sea.

Contains: Details for new and returning locations within the Astral Plane such as the Rock of Bral, new mechanics, NPCs, Dungeon Master materials and more.

The latest instalment to the Dungeons & Dragons multiverse also introduces six new playable races:

·         Astral elves: distinguishable by the starlight in their eyes, these wanderers have ventured from the Feywilds to call the Astral Plane their home.
·         Autognomes:mechanical gnomes built to survive even the deepest reaches of space.
·         Hadozee: flying simian humanoids known for their love of sailing and knowledge of spelljamming.
·         Giff: these “hippo-folk” come from a world long-forgotten, and have been aimlessly travelling the Wildspace since.
·         Thri-kreen: hunter nomads from the Shaar, these mantis warriors are fierce and agile adversaries.
·         Plasmoids: experience the thrill of playing as a sentient slime for the first time in D&D.
