iPhone Commodore 64 Emulator Interview with CEO of Kiloo Studios Jacob Moller

MasterAbbott from Capsule Computers recently interviewed CEO of Kiloo Game Studios,  Jacob Moller regarding the re-release of the Commodore 64 Emulator for the Apple iPhone / iTouch.   Capsule Computers would like to thank Jacob for taking the time out of his extremely busy schedule to give all the fans and readers some great information regarding Kiloo / Manomio and of course the new Commodore 64 emulator for the Apple iPhone.

Sit back and enjoy the interview.

Capsule Computers Question 1 Tell us a little bit about yourself and also Manomio/Kiloo Studios.  How were they created, the origin behind both names, when were they first established, are they joint companies ? and how many employees are currently employed there today.

Jacob Møller My name is Jacob Møller and I am the founder and CEO of Kiloo. The whole idea of the company started out more than 10 years ago, when a few of us were fiddling with computer graphics and games in our spare time. Like a lot of other startups, this story began in my apartment with long nights, lack of funding and learning by doing. Luckily, we’ve improved a lot on those points since! With a strong foundation in developing for Java-enabled phones for a number of years, we’re right now looking to publish on the newer markets with iPhone, Android and Nintendo DS development. But we certainly won’t rule out other platforms as long as digital publishing is possible. The name ‘Kiloo’ was selected from a long list back in 1999 and essentially picked because of easy pronunciation in all languages, because the .com domain was free and because it typographically looked cool! 😉 Manomio was founded in 2008 and we are two separate companies. Fun and friendship is essentially what leads our strong partnership– and of course a mutual wish to deliver top quality entertainment.

Capsule Computers Question 2What do you believe have been your greatest challenges designing an emulator such as the C64 for the iPhone/iTouch.

Jacob MøllerThe greatest challenge for us was by far to keep the original spirit of C64 and be true to the brand that has millions of fans out there. It might sound like a terrible cliché, but there’s just so much emotion connected to the C64. Just the thought of combining a really state-of-the-art machine like the iPhone with something as cool as the most popular personal computer of all times has been a  fantastic dream-come-true for all of us. I hope that people feel that we have provided the emulator with the authentic ‘retro touch’.

Capsule Computers Question 3 Where there any issues with the development of the Commodore 64 emulator? Please explain them and what your team did to overcome these problems.

Jacob MøllerI believe the most difficult part of the development process was to come up with the idea for the controls. It took quite a few iterations to nail the current system but I think it was well worth the wait. Also – as I just mentioned getting the right look and feel and provide the right ‘retro’ experience proved to take a little while.

Capsule Computers Question 4 For people that don’t know anything about the Commodore 64.  How would you describe this emulator to them and the meaning behind what an emulator does.

Jacob MøllerOur C64 iPhone Emulator Application takes you straight back to the eighties. I’d say that you’ve really missed out on something if you haven’t playing around with the Commodore 64. Well, now you can actually get a second chance on your iPhone, Haha 😉

Capsule Computers Question 5What extra features/modes/ etc did you add to make C64 emulator stand out in the crowd of other Apple APPS currently available in the market at the moment.

Jacob MøllerI think the upcoming version 1.2 will stand out significantly as we will be delivering an App. Store thinking straight into the emulator – this means that you will be able to get access to both free and paid game downloads in exactly the same way as you know it from iTunes.

Capsule Computers Question 6 How long was the development cycle for the C64 Emulator.  Could you briefly explain the start to finish phases, design, testing, licensing etc

Jacob MøllerIt has taken about six months from start to finish developing the C64 Emulator. Typically, when we develop games and application we start out with a big brainstorm on content and also discussing the visuals. This dialogue is then boiled down and manifested into a production plan together with a milestone break down of each individual development phase. Once that is done we allocate the resources internally and the actual development can commence.

Capsule Computers Question 7 What engine / technology is used in getting the C64 up and running on the iPhone, how many developers / programmers were involved in creating C64 emulator.

Jacob MøllerWe have had two programmers and one graphical designer on the project working hard to reach what we have today. In order to deliver new updates on a regular basis we have a dedicated programmer working full time on the C64 emulator.

Capsule Computers Question 8What influenced yourself and the team to make a C64 emulator. What games from ERA of gaming were influential.

Jacob MøllerSeriously, we thought it was such a great idea that it just had to be done. We all have our very own favorite C64 games in Manomio and Kiloo but my personal hit titles are Jupiter Lander, Boulder Dash and Paperboy.

Capsule Computers Question 9How does the C64 Emulator work ? Can consumers play ANY Commodore 64 game or are they limited ?  Please explain this in detail.

Jacob MøllerWe are licensing all the games from their current owners in order to support the ones who initially made the games as we feel that is the right way to do it. It is not an easy task to identify those current owners but so far we already have access to a huge catalogue of very good games from back then.

Capsule Computers Question 10 How many games can or will the C64 emulator support (Currently & in the future).  Will consumers be able to load their own game into the emulator ?

Jacob MøllerThere is actually no limit to how many games we can include – and we want to get as many as possible in there so all C64 fans can play exactly their very favorite game!

Capsule Computers Question 11 – Will games be made available via download upgrade/update ? Will games be free or will consumers have to pay for the new games once they are available.

Jacob MøllerStarting from version 1.2 you will be able to download additional games into the C64 emulator. We will both have free and paid for games – it is going to be very cool! Prices of individual games will range from free to USD $1.99 each, depending on the publisher. We can also do whole downloadable game packs.

Capsule Computer Question 12 – If consumers want a specific game.  How would they be able to get that working on the C64 Emulator ?

Jacob MøllerThe best way is to send specific game request directly to us – that way we have a chance to spend our resources on finding exactly the right games that people would like to see and play. We will then do everything we can to get the licensing agreement in place.

Capsule Computers Question 13 Are there any patches or updates planned for C64 Emulator, if so what will be included in the updates.

Jacob MøllerWe have so many great ideas that we want to include in the next updates. The upcoming 1.2 upgrade is scheduled as a mid December release. Our focus is in creating a retro experience and providing additional downloadable games via Apple’s in-app purchases feature. All new game titles will continuously be announced on twitter at twitter.com/jacob_kiloo and on twitter.com/manomio as we license them from their current owners.

Capsule Computers Question 14 Will the C64 Emulator be compatible with Open Feint technology.

Jacob MøllerWe are currently evaluating our options for implementing various options of game communities. It is a little too early to say anything definite about our choice. However, we will be looking for a technology where we can upload scores from the original C64 games. That way people can compare their scores on a World Wide basis in specifically their favorite C64 game – yes, that should actually be possible and it will be one of my most liked features for sure! 😉

Capsule Computers Question 15What can players / consumers expect from Kiloo/Manomio moving forward.  Are there already plans or upcoming games that you are able to let your fans know about ?

Jacob MøllerThe best way to be kept updated is simply to follow us on twitter or signing up on to our C64 newsletter at www.manomio.com/index.php/newsletter. I would like to share everything that we have on the drawing board right now but there is simply so much and, we would also like to have something to tell you in our next interview 😉

Capsule Computers Question 16 Finally.. What do you love most working at Kiloo / Manomio ?

Jacob MøllerI love the fact that I am everyday surrounded by genuinely passionate people that really care about our products and their quality. For us it is all about providing a good solid gaming experience – we believe that if we like our products other people will too!

Hopefully all of you out there will have as much fun using our C64 app. as we had creating it.

Thank you once again Jacob for your time, Capsule Computers wish yourself and your team over at Kiloo and Manomio all the best of luck with the Commodore 64 emulator on the Apple iPhone and we look forward to speaking to you again soon.

Ghosts ‘n Goblins Gold Knights Review

    Ghosts ‘n Goblins Gold Knights
    Platform: iPhone (reviewed)
    Developer: Capcom Mobile
    Release Date: November 11, 2009

Ghosts ‘n Goblins is a classic side scrolling action platform game that was first released way back 1985 by Capcom, where you control the hero named Arthur, who must defeat hordes of zombies, demons and other undead creatures in order to rescue his Princess by the name of Prin Prin.  Arthur attacks by throwing different types of weapons at his enemies.  He starts off with his trusty lance and can pick up number of other ones along as well as bonuses and extra suits of armor that can help him in his journey.

Ghosts ‘n Goblins in it’s day in the Arcades was certainly one of the most hardest games to master and finish and was a tribute to the fantastic creative minds over at Capcom.  Since then there have been numerous versions of Ghosts ‘n Goblins released on MULTIPLE platforms.  Starting on the Commodore 64 family computer all the way up to its recent release on the Apple iPhone.  Ghosts ‘n Goblins shows the world that you can teach an old dog new tricks by being re-born once again on certainly the most popular next generation of mobile gaming device the Apple iPhone.

Capcom have done a fantastic job in creating a new and fresh look to Ghosts ‘n Goblins Gold Knight.  Graphically the game looks amazing with 3D style backgrounds and character models but still keeping true to side scrolling platformer that made it what it is today.

Ghosts ‘n Goblins Gold Knights features 6 totally new and original levels to battle your way through, you get to meet some new monsters and some interesting end level bosses.

Now why is called Gold Knights …. well this time around Arthur is not on his own.  For the first time ever in Ghosts ‘n Goblin, Capcom have introduced a new playable character and his name is Sir Lancelot, both characters have their strengths and weaknesses and also use / find different weapons and armor as shown in the screenshots below.

Last thing I would like to mention is something new to Ghosts ‘n Goblins and fairly new to the iPhone, only a few other games at the moment are providing this sort of service and thats Downloadable Content upgrades.  For a small price ($.99 US / $1.19 AU) you can unlock such extras as unlimited lives and Gold Armor upgrades just to name a few.  I run through all in the video review below.

Now sit back and watch the rest of the review of Capcom’s Ghosts ‘n Goblins for the Apple iPhone.

    [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PikXhRWiSlk]

Ghosts ‘n Goblins Gold Knights is easy to pick up and play but also quite challenging at certain times.  New comers might find it a little awkward at first but once they master the control system, they shouldn’t have any problems what so ever getting through the game.  As for myself being a true professional (cough cough) I ran through the game in less than 30 minutes.  Don’t let that you deter you as Ghosts ‘n Goblins was made to be played quickly, as each level is timed and if you don’t complete it before your time expires you fall to the ground magically in pile of bones.

Capsule Computers gives Ghosts ‘n Goblins Gold Knights on the Apple iPhone 9 Capsules Out Of 10.  Priced at only $3.99 AU / $2.99 US it’s a BARGAIN !!! Grab your copy now from the iTunes Store

Commodore 64 Emulator Review for the iPhone

    Commodore 64 Emulator
    Platform: iPhone (reviewed)
    Developer: Kiloo
    Release Date: November 13, 2009

MasterAbbott From Capsule Computers sat down and did a video review for the Commodore 64 emulator going through all the options and details.

The emulator is well designed and very user-friendly.  When running on the iPhone 3GS load times are amazingly fast, there are no wait time what so ever.  The C64 emulator ships with 8 classic games which are :

    Arctic Shipwreck
    Dragon’s Den
    International Basketball
    International Soccer
    International Tennis
    Jack Attack
    Jupiter Lander
    Lemans

All games play with their original graphics and SID Sound, no enhancements have been made (no they dont play in HD) so you get to relive your childhood the way it was meant to be lived out.  All this is covered in the video review.  So there is no need to double up on same information twice.

One good option discussed in the review is the Auto-Save feature which will save as soon as you exit out or go back to the “My Games” section.  Once you go back into that game you will be asked if you want to resume from that spot.  If you don’t then you will lose that save game spot and it will create a new one upon you exiting again.  It’s great to have a save game option, BUT I believe this section needs a little work.  It would be better if there was an actual SAVE game button/option menu that allowed the player to save their progress any time during play (possibly offering more than one save game slot per game) and also giving them the option to re-load and choosing which save game they would like at any point.  As explained above the Auto-Save works well but adding in a save/load option menu will make it even better.

The full vertical full screen feature is also fantastic and makes things very easy to see on the screen.  The onscreen virtual joystick looks really cool and has a great retro feel to it (reminds me of the controller i used have when I was young).  The joystick is easy to use but will take a little time to getting used to.   Some games for example like Lemans you will find it a little hard to control the car as originally Lemans was a designed to use the paddle controllers for easy maneuvering.  Possibly an option to add in future releases in the advanced settings would be a joystick sensitivity section to allow users to best configure joystick settings to their own liking.

Another thing missing is the traditional Blue start up screen and virtual keyboard.  This option was actually in the first release of the Commodore 64 but issues were encountered and it seems its now been removed.  Not having the traditional blue start up screen is a little disappointing, but it’s not really needed as the game menu from My Games looks clean and neat and simple for players to use.  I would however suggest that the virtual keyboard does return as for future release games that did require the keyboard it will be impossible to play them without it.

Check out the video review below for the rest of the update and features discussed.

Capsule Computers gives the Commodore 64 Emulator on the Iphone 7 Capsules of 10.  I does need a bit more work.  The lack of games (only 8 included)  and advanced settings, save and joystick calibration etc.  Moderately priced at $4.99 US / $5.99 it’s not that expensive and hopefully with the next few updates and releases especially with the extra game packs coming out, the C64 emulator will be worth every cent, as its truly AMAZING !!

The Commodore 64 emulator is available for download from the iTunes store for only $4.99 US / $5.99 AU

Modern Warfare 2 – DESTROYS SALES RECORDS !!

Activision announced today that Modern Warfare 2 sold 4.7 million copies in its first 24 hours on store shelves. It easily surpassed previous record holder Grand Theft Auto IV’s 3.6 million sold. Modern Warfare 2 is also being called the biggest entertainment launch in history with an estimated $310 million raked in. By comparison, Halo 3 brought in $170 million in day-one sales when it was released in September 2007.

“The Call of Duty franchise has become a cultural phenomenon showing the power of video games as an entertainment medium,” said Mike Griffith, CEO, Activision Publishing, Inc. “The shattering of these entertainment records is a testament to the compelling, cinematic and uniquely engaging experience that the Call of Duty brand delivers. Modern Warfare 2 has taken interactive experience to unprecedented heights setting a new standard for entertainment.”

It seems Modern Warfare 2 lived up to the sales hype for retailers, but has it lived up in gameplay? What’s everyone think of the single player campaign, the new Spec-Ops mode, and of course online multiplayer ?

Playstation 3 to also get FACEBOOK app ??????

We all know that Microsoft have announced and many people already have the new Xbox 360 Dashboard update that has a load of fantastic new features, one of which is Facebook.  It seems like Sony wants the PS3 to get in on the action with its own Facebook app. Looks like we might be able to do some poking from the PS3 hopefully sometime soon.

Images have somehow been unintentionally leaked, and eagle-eyed Sony watchers got an early glimpse at a major Sony PS3 firmware update which seems to include a Facebook application in the console.

Besides the appearance of Facebook on PS3, the images also show the ability to…change “gamer card” colour and view thumbnails of photos in a grid layout.

At this moment this is just speculation/rumors.  Who knows if these extras will actually appear in the next PS3 firmware update.  But if they do, at least PS3 will be able to update their Facebook status in the comfort of their own lounge room.
