Matt Hazard: Blood Bath and Beyond
Publisher: D3 Publisher Developer: Vicious Cycle Platforms: Xbox 360 (Reviewed), Playstation 3 Release Date: January 7th, 2010
Overview:
Ahh Matt Hazard, does anyone remember the great old days of playing the Matt Hazard games back on the old 8-bit systems? What you don’t? Well you will be working to save Matt Hazard’s 8-bit self, as Matt Hazard in this side scrolling shoot-em up.
Story
Unfortunately there is not much story to speak of, the plot that is driving the story, is that your arch nemesis Neutronov has kidnaped your 8-bit self in the effort to kill your past, thus killing you in the future. If that doesn’t make much sense, don’t worry, even the game’s main character Matt and his programming pal Quentin have trouble understanding it. Thus begins your journey through many familiar levels that will bring up some memories of games past.
However the story is only told through small text pieces as there is nearly zero voice acting in the game. This is joked upon between Matt and Quentin as there being less funding thanks to the bad reviews and sales from their previous game Eat Lead. Through the game there are many jokes upon their poor reviews and how harsh the sales were for their previous game, which is enjoyable that they can still take and put a comedic spin on their last game.
The story and the game is terribly short however, leading to a maximum of two hours playthrough on the hardest difficulty. Though you can continue to play on each of the three difficulty options, uniquely called; Wussy, Damn This Is Hard, and F*** This S***! there is little else to do beyond collecting every pachinko coin in the game, and every box art. Although it is hard to miss them as enemies and boxes drop them quite often in plain sight.
Graphics:
Appearances in this game are as they appear, and you will not be playing any levels that are in 8-bit, even if you are supposedly playing through old games and even a few of Matt’s old games.
Each level will have a certain theme, and most levels will have a theme to go along with them. In the very first level you start out on a cruise ship, then as you venture inside, you begin to wonder whether or not you will see a Little Sister running around. Then levels later your treated to a pristine city filled with bright red areas to jump and walk, just like Runner Vision from Mirrors Edge.
Another interesting area, was when Matt is running through a base quite similar to Team Fortress 2, only to run into Red and Blue team members. Not only that, but there are curious pipes and floating blocks with ! Points on them, favoring Mario style block breaking.
Though there are absolutely zero cut scenes in the game, and the pictures used for the characters talking screen could have been a little better looking. At that point it felt like an old RPG game with the characters talking silently through their pictures, though this could also have been a parody.
Gameplay:
Here is where the parodies and the bits taken from other games truly shines. Matt Hazard Blood Bath and Beyond is strictly a side scrolling shooter. This takes it’s cues from Contra, and the more recent Shadow Complex. However, unlike Shadow Complex which favors exploration and backtracking, BBB favors Contra’s formula of being unable to go backwards.
Once you have advanced far enough in the screen, the camera moves along with you. However if you were to pass up enemies or power ups, you can still shoot the enemies off screen. Anything they drop, such as a collectible item or a power up is completely lost to you. Also this leads to some troublesome re-spawns. As a few times I lost lives simply because the character re-spawned back into a pool of water or electricity trap.
At the start of each life, you are given your basic gun which has unlimited ammo, and six grenades. However you can pick up an assortment of various other weapon power ups such as; a shotgun, machine gun, laser, rockets, and more. However the most unique and powerful upgrade is the flamethrower. This flamethrower burns through enemies like they were marshmallows, and they fall to the floor in a wondrous pile of fire.
Bullets will go through nearly any obstacle, minus crates and certain floors. Hidden in crates and certain enemies are Hazard Game boxes, and pachinko coins. These boxes are collectibles which will unlock the box art and description for Matt Hazard’s previous games. While the pachinko coins give you tokens for an after level game, called Ragdoll Pachinko. This mode, while short, is very fun as you drop bodies down a pachinko game to score extra points to add to your online leader board total.
The game play is capable of playing with a friend, however that friend must be sitting next to you. The co-op mode for the game is strictly local only, however there is the opportunity for this to be fixed by a patch later on in the game. Playing with a friend is just as rewarding as it was playing in Contra. Though you may still argue over who stole the health pick up or weapon upgrade.
Overall:
If you were a fan of Matt Hazard: Eat Lead, then you will definitely enjoy this game, as the same satirical element stands, though not much is emphasized outside of level design. Plus the game is very short, though the running and gunning is quite fun, for 1200 MS points, $15, can be a lot to ask for two hours of playtime.
In the end I would give Matt Hazard: Blood Bath and Beyond a hazardous 6.5 Capsules out of 10

Running With Scissors: Pre-Season – iPhone / iTouch Review – written by freelance Xbox Reviewer Travis
Overview:
This is quite a simple, yet very addicting and enjoyable game. You are a stick figure, running with scissors and disobeying your very nature of being told never to run with scissors, or of course valuable things.
Running with Scissors is more than just what the title says. You are running against three other players who are racing towards a finish line. Not only that but you must also contend with dreaded kittens and to tornados tearing up the terrain.
Graphics
The stick figure players, surprisingly have a bit of polish to them and don’t simply look like lines someone would draw in MS Paint. You have the ability to choose your color, and then that color is stylized and shined onto your stick figure.
Each background is quite beautiful and changes to show any obstacles that might be occurring at that same time. There are only two levels at the moment, but both look superb. When running through a field you have the blue sky behind you and the crisp looking grass beneath your feet. And the other level you are running on cloud tops with blue gray mountains in the background against the sky.
Each of the obstacles is also blended perfectly, when a hill is added or a mountain, it does not look out of place in the slightest, that includes even some of the stranger obstacles, such as eye stalks sticking out of the ground, or milk jugs that could be spilled.
Gameplay
Now when you first start playing the game, you might not think the game will be very enjoyable. However after your first race you start to get drawn into playing again and again. As each race brings forth new opportunities and is never the same as different things happen every time.
Not only that, but after each race is over, win or lose, you have the opportunity to play your own scratch off ticket. Scratch N’ Win is where you can scratch off squares to get the opportunity to unlock items without the need to buy them, or you can get coins and hold them to purchase more items for you to customize your runner.
There are a total of three different outfits for your runner to currently wear, but more are being added everyday as the game was quite recently released and is receiving updates on an every other day basis. There are also three different items you can be carrying in your hands, from dangerous to priceless, running with them would not normally be advised. Though who’s to stop you?
There is an energy bar feature that you charge by running, and this is where the fun really begins. The basic use of this feature is to jump or fly over obstacles that you have laid down in front of you. However, you can also use your energy to create obstacles for your other racers. You may create a hill in their path to slow them down, kittens to hug them to the ground for a few seconds, or even a tsunami to transfer them all the way to the starting line.
One problem is that the game does tire your fingers out quite quickly, as the only way to run, is to use your fingers to quite literally, run as if they were your own legs. Using two fingers you run them along the right side of the screen to move, and this has to be done quickly and nearly constantly, as not doing so will result in your runner standing in place. To jump or fly, you must also slide both fingers upwards, though in the midst of flight you do not need to keep running and can give your fingers a small rest until your energy bar runs out, bringing you back to earth.
Overall
This is quite an enjoyable game that will have you coming back to continue racing again and again. And with updates on the way there will be more and more features to unlock and areas to race in. At a price tag of only $2.99 that is quite affordable for an enjoyable time waster such as this. Though your fingers may be tired from all the running they will be doing on the screen.

Bayonetta Publisher: SEGA Developer: Platinum Games Platforms: Xbox 360 (Reviewed), PlayStation 3 Release Date: January 5th, 2010
Overview
If the game feels similar to Devil May Cry, there is a very good reason for that. The game was directed by Hideki Kamiya, who also developed DMC, in cooperation with SEGA. To say the least it is one crazy game, and it is sure to spark debates everywhere on who would win in a fight, Bayonetta or Dante?
Bayonetta is an action game where you slaughter the angels from Heaven, in many different and crazy ways and places.
Story:
You play as an Umbra Witch named Bayonetta, who has woken up with absolutely no memory, after 500 years of sleep in the bottom of a lake. Shortly after beginning you are entered into a battle against the legions of Heaven. Yes Heaven, unlike most other games, you are fighting against angels instead of demons.
Avoiding the largest of spoilers, Bayonetta is searching for a gem stone called the eye of the world, and is told that it might have a possible link to her past. From here you depart on a journey across the town of Vigrid, both in the realms of mortals, and Paradiso.
The story mode for this game is strictly linear. Though some may view this as unfortunate, there is still a small amount of exploration and secrets hidden throughout the levels, that if you rush through, you might miss something hidden simply behind a few rocks easily smashed out of the way.
There are also portals called Alfheim Portals, hidden in each level that require you to defeat a certain amount of angels in a certain way, within a certain time period. Such as defeating a large angel, using only a certain amount of punches and kicks. These challenges can be very frustrating at the start, but they are, however, very rewarding as completing a challenge will give you a quarter of a heart, which after collecting four will increase your health bar.
Graphics:
The graphics for each area are stunning and have realistic color tones. Though this means more of a brown look for the city, you won’t be spending much time there. From the ocean to the train station, each of the levels are amazingly well done. Though there are many invisible walls which may cause you to jump off a ledge, thinking you can reach the pedestal beyond, only to end up falling and losing health from a wall.
Each of the angels is very well done and stylized. The angels take their appearances from both western and eastern religions, varying from serpents and flying cherub heads. The angels also show damage, if you do heavy damage to a leg, plaster like flesh will fall off and expose muscle or organs beneath it. This is especially the case with some of the larger monsters, where the damage will be hard to miss.
And now to our heroine, Bayonetta. Her character design is very tantalizing, especially when you realize that her entire outfit, is made of her own hair. Better yet, when you execute what is called a wicked weave attack (explained later) nearly all of her hair is put into the attack, leaving her in a swimsuit like outfit left.
Though also when you are executing a climax finisher on a boss, Bayonetta uses all of her hair, leaving her character model covered modestly by a stream of hair and ribbons. It was very interesting to see how far the limits were pushed when it comes to censorship. Thankfully the amount of fan service is used only when it makes sense, and never gratuitously.
There are two types of cut scenes, and frankly both are very amazing to watch. The first kind is where you will be watching your run of the mill cut scene, but it is always good to keep your fingers on the controller, because you never know when a quick time event show up. Though there is another type of cut scene which treats the game like a film strip. Showing only photos like a slide show, but with full voice acting. Though this may seem cheap, the scenes portrayed in this method are more dramatic because of it.
Gameplay:
Here is where the game really takes off, with the hectic and enjoyable gameplay. The fighting is very well done and it is easily accessible to anyone. During load screens the game will show you various combo’s you can perform, so as opposed to viewing a loading screen picture, you are able to test out the various combos and learn exactly what you want to use.
There are also a variety of different weapons available, which you can obtain by getting Golden LPs. These weapons vary from everything to a whip, and bazookas. The special part of this is, you get two weapon sets to equip. One you equip to your hands, and the other to your feet. There are numerous combinations you can make, unleashing new devastating attacks.
Speaking of the attacks, the wicked weave attacks that I mentioned earlier are one of the most unique attacks I’ve ever seen. At the end of a combo attack, Bayonetta will turn her hair into a giant fist, or foot, or sword blade, and slam it into the enemy dealing extreme damage. When this happens she can also transfer into another wicked weave attack depending on the combo attack. These are surprisingly easy to do and many of your combinations will end in these types of attacks.
There is yet another unique feature when it comes to the battle system of Bayonetta. When successfully dodging an attack, you will enter a period of slow motion called Witch Time. During this mode, there will be a purple aura on the screen, and everything around you will be in slow motion, except for yourself. This allows you to unleash a string of attacks to destroy your angelic opponents quickly and safely.
After a certain period of time, you will fill up your magic bar and when that is done, you can unleash an extremely powerful, though sometimes odd, execution attack. Each execution attack will vary depending on what type of enemy you are facing. Though to say the least you will be seeing everything from tombstones dropping on angels, to giant chainsaws appearing out of thin air, to even a wooden horse.
However in the midst of battle, you can be stuck in a very tight space, and the camera will completely go inside the wall and you won’t be able to see anything, leaving you to the mercy of your dodging ability until the camera fixes itself. You can control the camera by turning it left and right, but this only helps occasionally.
At the start there are only three difficulties to choose from, from Very Easy, Easy, and Normal. The first two difficulties offer a very unique feature, the ability for the game to play itself. The only player input needed is to push one or two buttons and the game will just let you enjoy the game. Playing through on Normal does not offer this feature, and you will play through some tough battles that are still quite deadly. Beating the game unlocks Hard, which further increases the strength, health, and variety of the angels you will face. There is also a mysterious mode for when the game is beaten on Hard that will challenge you to a completely different fight.
Overall:
This game is very hard to pass up, especially if you are a fan of fast paced action games. There is little wrong with the game, minus the occasional invisible wall, or camera angle the game is superb and will stay in your memory for quite some time.
I rate this hair raising game with 8.5 Capsules out of 10
This review is based off of the Xbox 360 version of the game.
