Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm Studios have today announced that Mortal Kombat has officially gone gold on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, meaning the development has been completely finished and it is ready to be shipped.
It is due for launch in the UK on 21st April, and in the US 2 days earlier on 19th April. Sadly for our Australian followers, it won’t be coming to Australia as it has been denied by the Australian ratings board, as you will have already heard if you’ve been following our coverage of the game so far.
The game hopes to mark a triumphant return for the series, with the fan favourite Fatality back and presented in more gory detail than ever before thanks to improvements granted by the graphical capabilities of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. There’s also plenty of new modes adding to the game’s traditional line-up.
When a video game is marketed, pushed and hyped as the biggest title of the year, always has the opportunity to heighten the anticipation and thrill of the release.
THQ’s Homefront was named as one of the most emotional and overwhelming games of the year but when it was released in March, it failed and as like EA to its Medal of Honor, stocks fell and people denied the game.
The apocalyptic title certainly had its epic moments and had magnitudes of potential but sadly it couldn’t live up to its predecessors like Fallout 3 or Gears of War. The AI was lousy and relied too heavily on the player’s extra movements.
One of last year’s major disappointments, despite its acclaimed name was Call of Duty: Black Ops. The Treyarch blockbuster defied its history and took risks, making the game distinctive from its ancestors. Despite its massive sales, the shooter failed to live up to the hype it enabled many months before its release. With the success of Modern Warfare 2, Treyarch and Activision relied on the name alone to push Black Ops into history.
Polish studio People Can Fly had a distinct title on their hands with the space adventure Bulletstorm. The game was certainly unique, unusual and very different from anything else in the industry. The characters were clever, cunning and held an appealing comic relief. But sexual innuendos, constant swearing and gory deaths did not make the game a favourite among parents. The exclusivity of the game was a major factor in enabling it to grow above its competition. But being different can also be a flaw.
The mother of all disappoints would have to be last year’s Medal of Honor. The Afghan based shooter had so much potential but many found it’s AI and similar looking characters weighed down any positives it might have had. The plight of Rabbit and his team could have had the opportunity to rival Soap MacTavish and his Task Force 141 but the foursome didn’t have the lift to push them that far.
Another EA title to disappoint fans is Crysis 2. Despite coming from an epic series, Crysis fell among other alien shooters, becoming a Halo clone. The graphics and maps might have shadowed its flaws but Crysis didn’t live up to the massive hype it caused before its release.
With this year yet to provide a plethora of awesome games, we should never accept the hype and learn to love games as they are.

Fresh off of Wrestlemania last night it seems that Stone Cold Steve Austin has left the ring after his usual beer bath and stepped into a THQ trailer. Even though WWE All-Stars has been out for almost a week now it doesn’t mean that Steve Austin can’t say his peace about the title, because I certainly wouldn’t want to stop him.
One of the judges of the WWE’s newest Tough Enough series Stone Cold rants about the various superstars that wouldn’t be able to stand up to him, whether it be old legends or the new superstars of today. Now Stone Cold is a legend in THQ’s latest wrestling title and it is apparently a really interesting take on wrestling as a whole, and that’s the bottom line because Stone Cold said so!
Nothing says 3D like being smacked in the face with a fish. Wait… what? Carrying on… Marvelous Entertainment has released a brand new trailer for their upcoming 3D fishing game called Reel Fishing Paradise 3D. Of course since Marvelous Entertainment is from Japan the trailer is in Japanese. Natsume on the other hand is handling the localization of the title when it comes out in the U.S.
You can catch the trailer below but before you do there are a few things to know about the title. There will be forty different kinds of fish to catch with plenty of customizable equipment to catch them with. You will then be able to put any fish you catch into an aquarium and then manage the aquarium itself. The 3D effects should be pretty interesting for this title, especially considering the fish themselves will be getting the 3D treatment.
Alice: Madness Returns will be following Alice as she tries to figure out her past and her own memories as she is stuck inside of a psychiatric ward in London. What we didn’t quite know yet is how the combat will be handled but that is all over now thanks to the ESRB rating that was released over the weekend. It appears there will even be a certain location that Alice will remember somewhere during the game’s progression.
The game will be rated M for Mature and apparently will contain a whorehouse or brothel incident that happened in Alice’s past as she slowly drifts into insanity. The entire ESRB rating can be found below, overall nothing too surprising to those who played the previous Alice re-imagining, and don’t be concerned about spoilers because there really aren’t any.
This is an action-adventure game in which players assume the role of Alice Little, an asylum patient attempting to understand her past while struggling with an unbalanced psyche. As they traverse between the real world and Alice’s imagination (i.e., Wonderland), players use pepper grinders, knives, and other weapons to attack fantastical enemies (e.g., trolls, puppets, living teapots, doll-like creatures) in melee-style combat.
Battles are accompanied by cries of pain, slashing sounds, and large splashes of blood that stain Alice’s body and the ground. Some enemies can be decapitated, and certain attacks cause them to explode into pieces; in one sequence, young doll-like characters are depicted with bloody wounds that expose their brains.
During the course of the game, the dialogue contains occasional references to prostitution (e.g., ‘I saw you down at the bloody whore house,’ ‘Where’d she be without me? On the streets selling her backside,’ and ‘Where’s me money?’/’Get those fat-a*s whores out on the street…’). The words ‘f**k’ and ‘c*nt’ can be heard in dialogue.
Ubisoft has announced that Related Designs will be developing a sequel to their hit strategy game, Dawn of Discovery. The new game is named, Anno 2070. This city building strategy game will be set in the future, and the upcoming global climate changes will be instrumental in your gameplay planning processes.
“Anno 2070 is a very ambitious game that will feel both familiar and fresh to fans of the series,” said Adam Novickas, director of marketing at Ubisoft. “Due to the game’s futuristic setting, the development team wasn’t restricted by historical boundaries and was able to dream bigger than ever before. It’s a new take on a great franchise that both newcomers and longtime fans will love.”
Rising sea levels have contributed to the horrific ecological disasters that you’ll have to solve while building your cities. Yup, amazingly enough, even after global warming destruction, industrialization is still a path to choose to draft your new world: be a Tycoon or save the planet with the Ecos.
