Persona 4 – Episode 1 Review

Persona 4: The Animation
Episode 1 – “You’re Myself, I’m Yourself”

The Shin Megami Tensei video game series are incredibly popular and the hype that paved the way to the premiere of Persona 4: The Animation may have raised the bar too high for what was delivered. It’s important you know that I have never played a Shin Megami Tensei game in my life, let alone the game in which this series is based off, so I do have any preconceptions or expectations of this series going in. However what was shown was to put it lightly, well… light.

The pacing was all over the joint and in the end it felt like very little happened (hence feeling “light”), when in reality these were probably all huge things in the game. I found the majority of the episode to be disjointed with some gentle strokes being taken with the quiet school life, to the suddenly big strokes of a murder mystery and then all the bizaare entrance into the television world, or something.

Things happened so eradically and that would be fine if the character’s had enough strength to hold it together. Unfortunately, they were each paper-thin in terms of personality (ironic for a series called Persona). I could hardly describe any character’s personality besides the protagonist’s school friend who is somewhere between a pervert and total screw-up.

But the biggest disappointment is the main character, who has no personality. Literally, none! He says about 3 or 4 lines the whole episode, and just get’s some sort of powers at the end and fights these monster things, which wasn’t really explained at all. Even worse is that nearly all decisions he makes, make no sense. Why does he randomly decide to go inside of a TV in a public electronics store. What would even make him think of going into it? Well, we don’t know because it wasn’t really, well, explained. He just does it.

It is such a difficult thing to explain when an anime just feels so bland, whilst trying to pull off such interesting imagery as the innards of the television world we see here. It just baffles me how such promising material can be handled so poorly.

At least the animation and artstyle of the series are impressive. The television world, is brilliantly concieved and looks amazing. The ever-present yellow of the other world really seems memorable to me, not often is that colour so heavily used. The character designs were also interesting but, it owes that to the game in which it is based off. Thankfully there was a really nicely animated fight scene come the end of the episode. But it was note enough to make up for the let-downs of the episode in general.

The music here was vapidly original but used incredibly poorly. In scenes in which the music should’ve been used, there was nothing but silence, and in the scenes in which there should have been silence there was music. The opening and ending are both funky little tunes that are more lively than the majority of the entire episode.

This kind of poor audio direction is simply confusing. I don’t understand what was going through the creators heads while making this. They just seem to have little idea where they want to go w ith this or how they want to go about this.

Overall Persona 4: The Animation’s first episode is unfortunately a disappointment. There was so many things that went wrong and not enough things going right to make up for it. There is potential here though for things to improve, we will see where they take things, but it needs to be somewhere great to make up for this horrible pacing and poor characterisation.

Sonic Generations newest trailer

The new Sonic Generations trailer has a glimpse of some of the previous Sonic games in it before it rolls right along to the new hawtness. And what new hawtness it is. Sega certainly seems to have finally listened to some of its fan base and made Sonic Generations the best Sonic game we have seen so far. Hopefully when the full game launches on November 1st these hopes won’t be dashed.

Whats your opinion of the new trailer? Are you excited to once again control the speed demon, or are you about sick of the little blue hedgehog who runs around cities collecting rings and defeating weird enemies?

A new trailer has been released for the hotly anticipated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. This new trailer detailing the single player storyline, called “Redemption” goes in depth about the devastation of the game’s version of a hypothetical third world war.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 like it’s theme of a third world war is also the third Call of Duty release under the Modern Warfare label. It is set to be released throughout the world in November, 2011.

You can check out the trailer below. Be sure to let us know what you think of it in the shoutbox or comments section.

Battlefield 3 achievement list unlocked

You have to hand it to DICE and EA, they managed to keep Battlefield 3’s achievement list under wraps for quite a long period of time. Usually a game’s achievement list is revealed a month or two ahead of time but they managed to keep it hidden until just two weeks before the title’s release date of October 25th in North America at least.

The achievement list can be found over at Xbox360Achievements and we can assume that the trophies for the game will be mirror images of these. These achievements are mostly for certain tasks performed as well as a few story related ones so of course, read at your own risk for spoilers. Plus there are six secret achievements which have yet to be revealed. Care to take a guess as to what they could be?

Team Bondi employees and others owed $1.4 million after shutdown

L.A. Noire’s development studio has had a rough time of things. The news has went from poor working conditions, to villainous bosses, to studio closure and now the company owes tons of money to their employees. As Edge Magazine reports, the developers in the production, programming, design and gameplay are owed anywhere between $1,600 to $99,000 each as well as the boss Brendan McNamara owed $102,000.

To make matters worse, since the company has shut down, they also owe creditors and a number of other branches of the studio a collective amount equaling $1.4 million. Since the studio has been shut down and is being sold off chunk by chunck, the chances of these people seeing anywhere near that amount are slim.

Puss in Boots to test his skills in Fruit Ninja…

Fruit Ninja is without a doubt one of the most addicting experiences you can find on the iOS (and more recently the Xbox 360 with Kinect). So what happens when you get Dreamworks involved with the hit slicing title? Fruit Ninja: Puss in Boots. Yes, you heard that right. Halfbrick are preparing to release a new version of Fruit Ninja with the famous feline that is also about to star in his own film on October 28th.

This new version also includes a “Bandito” mode where players can slice their way through several challenges as well as the much requested addition of the Tomato. The “desperado” mode features a more classic feel of the original with fruit, unique waves and Puss in Boots’ elusive Magic Beans.

I know this is a movie tie-in and we usually know how those perform, but this one just looks like a perfect fit as Puss in Boots is known for his ferocious swordwork, which should blend perfectly with that classic fruit chopping gameplay. A new trailer was released today to show off this spin-off, which you can check out below. Fruit Ninja: Puss in Boots releases October 20th on the Apple Marketplace.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine ‘Exterminatus’ DLC arrives October 25th

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine has been out for quite a bit of time now, but Relic hasn’t forgotten about the title. In fact they have a free piece of co-op DLC coming out for it on October 25th reports Eurogamer. While the DLC, Exterminatus has been talked about for awhile, this is the first time they announced a release date for the content.

This update will be released at the same time on all platforms. There will also be more downloadable content in the future but currently Relic is keeping tight lipped about what that content may be. Now the question here is whether or not this DLC is too little too late, as it is nearly that time of year when triple-A titles are released at a weekly pace.

VVVVVV arriving on 3DS eShop later this year

Up for an intersting challenge? Well Terry Cavanagh’s interesting title VVVVVV is making the jump from being available only on the PC to being available soon on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. This release comes courtesy of Nicalis who is also developing Cave Story 3D which will be released later this year on the 3DS.

The move provides VVVVVV with full 3D and will also take place on both the top and bottom screen of the 3DS with the map on the bottom offering directions and of course the top for navigating. The 3DS will also see a number of new levels added to the original version as well as future update through the system’s spotpass service. Currently there is no price estimate but it’s always good to see an Indie title make it to a handheld.

Hitman Absolution to have hardcore mode for stealth enthusiasts

For those who wish to be challenged when they are playing the next Hitman game, there is a special mode just for you. A hardcore mode will be added to Hitman Absolution which is designed to be quit difficult and rewards players for being stealthy and methodical with their play. This of course will then be rewarded with achievements/trophies depending on the system.

Producer of Hitman Absolution, Hakan Abrak spoke with Eurogamer about the game mode saying that the team “We will get into more details at a later point, but obviously it’s linked to the playing style. It’s more pacify your enemies, be undetected, maybe solve the challenges in a smarter way. That will probably give you a stealth assassin achievement.”

This of course means things will be quite difficult and challenging for achievement hunters. But Abrak also says that this will hopefully swing public opinion away from the thought of believing that Absolution won’t be stealth oriented.

LOTR: War in the North – Bosses Vignette

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment have teamed up with developers Snowblind Studios to provide us with yet another trailer for the upcoming Lord of the Rings: War in the North. This one shows off one of the bosses – Barrow-wight Lord.

Middle-earth is home to creatures more fearsome than orcs. More cunning than trolls. More loathsome than giant spiders.

Lurking in the forgotten tombs of Barrow-downs, dwelling amongst the fallen dead, the Barrow-wights wait under reign of the Barrow-wight Lord. Revealed in this new video, the Barrow-wight Lordhas overtaken this sacred Ranger burial ground. He uses magic and minions most foul to spread the rule of evil in the darkness and death of his lair.

The battle cry of the dwarf, the sword of the human, the staff of the elf – all must be used to best this most despicable boss and its hordes of skeletal servants. The Barrow-wight Lord uses his powers to pit man against man, friend against friend – only the strongest of Fellowships will best him.
