Own a Nintendo 3DS but a bit disappointed on the lack of games, or should I say lack of quality games that have been released recently for the handheld? Well all that is about to change because NIS America and Nicalis’ Cave Story 3D is now available at nearly all places that video games are sold.
Cave Story 3D is the creation of Daisuke Amaya or Pixel as he likes to be called and it is a side scrolling action adventure game which was inspired by the 2D original released years ago. The player plays as Quote, a boy who has woken up in a mysterious cave with no memories. As you advance through the title you will learn more about who you are and try to save a whole race of creatures from being destroyed. Cave Story 3D will cost $39.99 and you can find out more at the game’s official site here.
Today Imangi Studios have revealed a screen shot and some exciting new details for the next update of their hit game Temple Run. “In the next update you’ll be able to see how far your friends got while playing!” they stated via the game’s Facebook page, and later revealed the feature will allow players to turn it on and off via the options menu.
This won’t be the only new feature included in the update however, the page has also stated that “This is just *one* of many new features that will be in the next update. We’re hoping to get it submitted to Apple tomorrow.”
An hour later another status was posted stating the team have been looking for new achievement ideas as well, and even asked fans for their ideas. What incredible fan service!
Otomedius Excellent Developer: Konami Publisher: Konami Platform: Xbox 360 (Reviewed) Release Date: November 1, 2011 Price: $29.99 – Available Here
Overview:
There has always been a certain franchise that stands at the pinnacle of side scrolling shoot’em ups, and that is the Gradius series. The Gradius series was created back in 1985 and since then has been a large number of titles released for the series, as well as a few spin offs to the main franchise. One of these was named Parodius which literally was a parody of their own game.
Visuals:
Now Otomedius Excellent isn’t a bad looking game by any means however those coming into the title expecting amazing 3D graphics will be disappointed. There are plenty of different enemy types that you will face off against but after a while you will feel that you are simply fighting wave after wave of the same enemy, though bosses are nice and daunting in appearance.
The stages that you fly around in are extremely well varied and none of them will share a similar design. Now most of them will simply be a straight flying through without any obstacles built into the match but there are a few with environmental dangers to keep the player on their toes. Plus, there are various occurrences which happen in the background which are a nice touch.
Audio & Subtitles:
Now one of the first things that should be mentioned is the fact that Otomedius Excellent contains an all Japanese voice track and that is all. There is no option for an English voice track, as the title does not contain one, meaning that everything you are going to be listening to will require some form of subtitle to understand what is going on unless you know Japanese of course.
The music for the title is quite enjoyable and there are different tracks for each level you fly through, with the background music changing occasionally during an event or whenever a boss descends to kill you a few times. Also I should note that the title boasts a wonderful anime opening as I mentioned before which has been completely subbed in English with colorful subtitles, which I found to be more enjoyable than just plain white. If you feel adventurous and no one is around you can even try to sing along with it as the Japanese words sit above the English and highlight when sung similar to a karaoke section.
The song itself is also very enjoyable, though if you know what J-Pop sounds like then you won’t be too surprised by what you will see once the game begins. The main characters are all voiced and will say various phrases as you play through the game, and even talk during load screens if you move the pointer of their picture and press A which is a nice little feature. But there is one problem with this.
There are a number of things within the game where there just aren’t any subtitles to let you know what is actually being said. One example is during the loading screens, the girls will say various phrases however players will be unable to tell what they are actually saying due to no subtitles being included. This also is a problem in the game itself as there are a couple of instances where an enemy boss will talk and there simply won’t be any subtitles shown. This is especially prevalent when you meet the final boss for the first time and 90% of what she says isn’t subtitled with only the last three words shown.
What is shown though is usually relatively accurate, but I would be remiss to say that everything is perfect. There are a number of instances where those who pay attention to the subtitles will notice occasional typos as well as instances of poorly worded phrases or just poor translations that mar the experience.
Gameplay:
There is a small semblance to a storyline here, but nothing is ever really spoken and most players will likely be flying by the seat of their pants with the events going on. The girls you control are actually female students who attend the St. Gradius High School and have special abilities which allow them to become fighters against the Bacterian Army.
At its core, Otomedius Excellent is a side scrolling shoot’em up title that will involve the players controlling their own girl and flying through stages while avoiding enemies shooting at them. One quick and rather pleasurable adjustment to the flying however is that colliding with the normal environment doesn’t damage your ship unless you are squished between the environment and the scrolling screen.

While staying on an island resort that just happens to be overrun with zombies is hazardous to your health in multiple ways, one of those ways should not be bugs. Dead Island, while a great game in its own right, had plenty of different bugs and little nit pick issues that made some people shy away from the title, or simply put it down once it was completed instead of going for a second playthrough.
That all might change however as Dead Island developer Techland has released a patch to the console version of the game that raises the level cap up to level 60 and fix a number of other issues. Players going through a second time will have their quest rewards and XP adjusted to give increased XP, weapon crates will now always have an item and it will be an “improved reward,” locked cases will always show they need to be lockpicked now and a number of other adjustments which you can see below.
Gameplay improvements:
Level cap raised to 60
New blueprints for weapon mods added
Infected damage reduced
Infected no longer interrupt player attacks
A series of improvements to subsequent playthroughs implemented:
quest XP rewards adjusted
XP rewards for challenges adjusted
in subsequent playthroughs XP is awarded for all quests completed in co-op
Purna’s ammo carrying capacity increased by 50%
Character state from a save game can now be loaded when using the Start from Chapter option
New balancing option added: enemy levels can now be adjusted independently for each co-op player
Players respawn with more health
Picklock skill level required to open a lock is now clearly indicated
Improved rewards in weapon crates
All weapon crates now contain rewards
Kick ability balanced, now requires stamina
Items can now be picked up instantly; this is reflected in adjusted animations
Fixes and interface improvements:
Fix: players are no longer left without a weapon after dropping the equipped item and healing with a medkit.
Fix: equipped items no longer swap mysteriously after drinking an energy drink
Tweak: healing with medkits from inventory works better, makes smarter choices of medkits
