Dead Island console patch raises level cap, fixes other issues

While staying on an island resort that just happens to be overrun with zombies is hazardous to your health in multiple ways, one of those ways should not be bugs. Dead Island, while a great game in its own right, had plenty of different bugs and little nit pick issues that made some people shy away from the title, or simply put it down once it was completed instead of going for a second playthrough.

That all might change however as Dead Island developer Techland has released a patch to the console version of the game that raises the level cap up to level 60 and fix a number of other issues. Players going through a second time will have their quest rewards and XP adjusted to give increased XP, weapon crates will now always have an item and it will be an “improved reward,” locked cases will always show they need to be lockpicked now and a number of other adjustments which you can see below.

Gameplay improvements:

  • Level cap raised to 60
  • New blueprints for weapon mods added
  • Infected damage reduced
  • Infected no longer interrupt player attacks
  • A series of improvements to subsequent playthroughs implemented:
  • quest XP rewards adjusted
  • XP rewards for challenges adjusted
  • in subsequent playthroughs XP is awarded for all quests completed in co-op
  • Purna’s ammo carrying capacity increased by 50%
  • Character state from a save game can now be loaded when using the Start from Chapter option
  • New balancing option added: enemy levels can now be adjusted independently for each co-op player
  • Players respawn with more health
  • Picklock skill level required to open a lock is now clearly indicated
  • Improved rewards in weapon crates
  • All weapon crates now contain rewards
  • Kick ability balanced, now requires stamina
  • Items can now be picked up instantly; this is reflected in adjusted animations

Fixes and interface improvements:

  • Fix: players are no longer left without a weapon after dropping the equipped item and healing with a medkit.
  • Fix: equipped items no longer swap mysteriously after drinking an energy drink
  • Tweak: healing with medkits from inventory works better, makes smarter choices of medkits
  • Fix: loot from dead enemies is now always identical for all co-op players
  • Fix: Purna no longer finishes her Fury with fists equipped
  • Fix: map tracking after death
  • Fix: zone info in the quarantine zone (City of Moresby)
  • Tweak: respawn point selection is now smarter

General:

  • Improved stability and network performance in co-op
  • Quest and reward fixes implemented

Saints Row: The Third event makes a Smooth Criminal out of gamers

Saints-Row-3-Event-Sydney-Nov-2011-065The Saints Row the Third event in Sydney was something that required some pretty smooth criminals. The event was mainly directed at making the event goers feel like they were part of the game, rather than showcasing the game itself. And with a game that is going against GTA and relies on its craziness, Saints Row brought that element to the event.

With a pole dance show being put on to ‘enhance’ the showing of the trailers (read: get all the press guys hot under the collar and draw attention away from what they had probably already seen), a slick venue, and some pretty awesome photo opportunities (with props!) THQ had it covered.

The event itself felt less like a game preview (barring some of the attendants) and more like a night out with an unlimited bar tab, and a VIP feel, along with some weirdly on-fire stunts (NB: These happened after the pole dance session, so most were not capable of processing what had happened).

Saints-Row-3-Event-Sydney-Nov-2011-051

There were game trials, of course, and these played well. As always, the ridiculously fantastical element of Saints Row is well at play. The customisation effect is also fantastic, if you can see some of the avatars we were playing with. The game was GTA-but-cooler. Like, all the things you wanted to do in GTA but couldn’t because a dildo-bat wasn’t available (that MasterAbbott never end up finding)

Overall, THQ provided an event that felt like Saints Row, ridiculous, fancy, overstated, and ridiculous once more. It was a true Man’s Night Out, except in a good way.
