The Darkness II Interview with Seth Olshfski from 2K Games

On the 19th of January, Capsule Computers headed out to Insert Coin(s) to check out an exclusive hands on preview of 2K’s The Darkness II. While we were there we had a quick catch up with the game’s producer,  Seth Olshfski. Check out the interview below!

After this interview took place, we had a go at playing the game ourselves and got drunk, played pinball  and watched some epic artists draw some The Darkness II artwork on a giant canvas.

[pro-player width=’530′ height=’253′ type=’video’]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTQmFZsmKoQ&list=UUty2RXmg7-aijqWml8EZf3Q&index=2&feature=plpp_video[/pro-player]

What we unfortunately didn’t get on camera in the interview however was while we played The Darkness II, Seth Olshfski himself gave us a little commentary and an insight into what it was like making the game. He pointed out little details in the artwork to such as scratches and such to try and emulate that drawn-up comic book feel. Another cool thing is he mentioned how they secretly give you a tutorial on the first stage, where Jackie’s leg is injured and is dragged through a restaurant, while you must shoots enemies by not giving you too much stuff to learn straight away.

The most impressive part however is that basically writer Paul Jenkins is a bloody genius. His theory behind telling a story is to ‘do’ not ‘show’, so instead of boring cutscenes they did their best to get you involved and interested in everything that happens in the game. That’s epic!

The Darkness II will be available February 10 on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Kojima provides a sneak peek at some new content for ZOE: HD Collection

While we wait for Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection to arrive at our shores in March 2012, Hideo Kojima has provided an interesting update for his other HD remaster project, Zone of the Enders:  HD Collection in the form of a twitter update.

The twitter update offers two phone captures of what appears to be the exclusive new animated sequence planned for the release. The quality of the screen captures obviously isn’t good, but it’s nice to have a little sneak peek at some exclusive content.

Zone of the Enders: HD Collection is set for a Western release towards the end of 2012 with no specific release date announced yet.

Insert Coins: A Night Of Darkness And Nostalgia

On the night of the 19th of January (which happened to be last night), the Oxford Art Factory hosted a night where gamers could re-live the days of the arcade, as well as get their mittens on 2K Games’ next release, The Darkness II, which will be released on February 10 in Australia. It was a night of pure bliss, topped off by 80’s music, game art, alcoholic spiders (the drink, not drunk spiders themselves) and gourmet hotdogs, New York style. Capsule Computers editors Roger Ma and Matthew Vella were joining myself in a night were gaming  (specifically The Darkness II) was the focus.

For the arcade lover, this was the night for you. Along the upper level, as well as the lower level, there were an abundance of arcade cabinet and arcade tables to fill your appetite. Of course, there were pinball machines as well. Five of them to be exact. On those arcade machines, some classics were to be found. Games like Street Fighter, Marvel Vs Capcom, Golden Axe and Metal Slug II were present. Even Space Invaders made an appearance. The problem was the fact that it became a crowded mess. The upper level was nothing more than a balcony, meaning space around the arcade cabinets was minimal, even non-existent. In fact, room to maneuver through was usually accompanied by shout of ‘excuse me’ since space was minimal.

Cabinets and pinball machines were not the only gaming devices around. On the lower level, sitting between the one of the bars and the gourmet hotdog stand, there were several arcade tables, littered neatly across the floor. Just like their cabinet counterparts, they offered classic arcade games, like Ms PacMan. Just like the balcony of cabinets, moving around was somewhat restricted, but more freely than the balcony.

However, the old met the new at Insert Coins as the main attraction was the single player demo of The Darkness II. Scores of gamers, both male and female, gathered to experience the re-emergence of The Darkness in the body of Jackie Estacado, the main protagonist. The new gameplay feature quad wielding, as well as the first couple of levels of the single player campaign, was the focus of the demo. The demo was exciting, interesting (story wise) and all around fun. Roger Ma took care of the hands-on impressions. For myself, I would recommend checking this game out, especially for the quad wielding.

For a couple of hours, right there on the stage, the artists went to work. As the focus for the event was The Darkness II, the works of art focused on the game. One artist worked on the faces of the creatures that spout out of Jackie’s shoulders, which is the Darkness, done with a black marker over a green outline. The other used water-based paint and re-created Jackie with one of the Darkness creatures coming out. Jackie also held a recently fired pistol, highlighting the combination of the gameplay elements. I was very impressed with the artworks. It felt like the Darkness.

If you are in Sydney, I will recommend going to Insert Coins, whether you love living in the past or looking forward to the future. Bring your mates along as well. Entry was cheap, only $10 per head, which also covers access to the games. Bring extra for drinks and food, though. Maybe you’ll also bump into your favourite Capsule Computers editor, get to know them… or not.

Max Payne 3 Design and Technology: Targeting and Weapons Video Out!

The second installment of the Max Payne 3 Design and Technology Video series has been released, focusing on targeting and weapons that you can use in the game. The video shows how Rockstar have tried to reimagine the gunplay mechanics of a third person action shooter, going above and beyond what’s available in the market at the moment.

With a precision targeting system that looks like it belongs to a first person game and lifelike weapon animation, Max Payne 3 has a fantastic sense of cinematic realism and immersion. After all, you can’t have such awesome storyline and graphics without hacing some great gameplay to back it up with.

The video also goes into the dual-wielding concept and how this affects gameplay, player’s abilities with dual-wielding, and how dual-wielding affects the animation.

Check out the video below! Max Payne 3 is due for release for PS3 and Xbox 360 on May 15, with the PC version coming out on May 29.
