Nintendo Network support revealed by Theatrhythm Final Fantasy

It was recently said by Testuya Nomura that Theatrhythm Final Fantasy would have downloadable content after it was released. Since then nothing has been said about how it will be done, but now an image of a dummy box of Theatrhythm Final Fantasy has surfaced on Twitter, including what looks like support for a new unannounced Nintendo online service.

What isn’t shown in the image above is the back of the box which says that the game supports download content from the internet and that it will be paid download content. However one thing you can see is the “Nintendo Network” on the upper right part of the box. Obviously Nintendo has yet to make any announcement about this service but we can likely expect one now within the next few days or at least before Theatrhythm Final Fantasy is released to stores.

PlayStation Vita 3G materials cost $159 to manufacture

0

It was only a matter of time before someone decided to pull apart a PlayStation Vita and check out all of the various materials and pieces that make the new handheld run. As such, UBM TechInsights have chosen to tear apart the more expensive PlayStation Vita 3G version and figure out the cost of the materials.

The cost of all of the materials inside the Vita and the casing equals out to a total of only $159.10 at current rates. This means that, at a selling point of $299. at stores, Sony is making at least $100 profit on each purchase, minus the retailers cut of the price of course. Could this mean that, depending on sales, could Sony pull a price-drop similar to what Nintendo had to do to boost 3DS sales?

Latest Resident Evil Revelations trailer is heavy on story and spoilers

After advertising a game for a very long period of time, it begins to become harder and harder to not spoil anything about the game’s storyline and it seems that Capcom has finally reached the breaking point as today they have released an official video which was shown at the Premier Party yesterday.

The video can be seen below and contains five minutes of story heavy footage as well as plenty of spoilers. This means that if you aren’t a fan of having a game’s story spoiled for you then perhaps you should hold off watching the trailer until the game is actually released.

Defense Zone Review

Defense Zone
Developer: Artem Kotov
Platform: iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone (reviewed)
Release Date: January 5th, 2012
Price: $1.99 (BUY NOW) “Lite” Version: Free (DOWNLOAD NOW)

Overview

Tower Defence games have been around for ages. And there have been a fair few games in this genre targetted at the touch-screen mobile platforms. Some have trouble making the controls easy to use, and others have trouble making the graphics engaging and interesting to the player. Let’s see how Defenze Zone fairs…

Story

As with a lot of casual mobile titles, this game is light on the story. In fact it has no story. There are no cutscenes, no introductory video, not even a tutorial included in this game. It doesn’t take any time introducing you to the game itself, or explain any of the controls. You tap on “Start Game”, select a level, and start playing.

This is a bit fo a two-edged sword. While it avoids the potentially cliche and cheesy story lines some casual games adopt, the player is left to fend for themselves; left floundering in the deep end with no knowledge of how they should be playing the game.

I guess if there was a story it would go something like: “Bad guys are approaching our base. Let’s build turrets to defend before they wipe us out,” the basic idea behind any Turret Defence game.

Gameplay

Through exploration, you’ll soon figure out that you can drag the different turrents onto the battlefield in specific areas, and tap on them after they are built to upgrade their stats or sell them.

In the turret’s menu there’s also an attack mode, where you can order it to attack the nearest, strongest, or weakest enemy unit. This is a nice addition to the genre, and really makes you think about your attack strategy on top of the placement of your turrets.

There are 6 turret types you unlock as you progress through the levels, including Machine Gun, Rocket Launcher, and Liquid Nitrogen Thrower (which slows enemies), all of which have their own range, attack damage, and great special effects when they’re firing.

For every unit you kill, you’ll get some money which you can then spend on new turrets or to upgrade the old ones. If you kill a vehicle, one or two foot soldiers will spill out, giving you more fodder to earn a few extra dollars with. For every unit that makes it past your defences you’ll lose a point of health and, of course, if you lose all your health you’ll fail the mission and have to start again.

Each wave is anticipated by a countdown in the top-right of the screen, where it also tells you when a special wave, like a squadron of aircraft or the like is coming. You can also skip the wait and bring on the next wave by hitting a button on the bottom of the screen, next to the pause, fast-forward, and settings buttons.

The maps are varied in setting and layout, and introduce new enemy units you have to deal with. They also get real hard, real fast. For hardcore fans of the genre, they’ll find it a pleasant challenge, but for the casual gamers out there, they’ll find themselves slowly sinking into the pit of dispair as they fail for the 10th time on the thrid level on “easy” mode.

That said, the game really goes above and beyond in terms of production quality, and for however long you manage to play it, it’s a fun ride.

The game also has OpenFeint integration, if you’d like to sign in.

Audio & Visual

The graphics in this game are awesome, especially compared to other games in the genre. Everything’s meticulously pre-rendered in 3D, giving you some great realistic maps to look at.

The weapons, while some are a little sci-fi, look pretty realistic, too. And the special effects are simply awesome! Smoke trails, explosions, blood splatters and lightning bolts abound in this game, making the usual tedium of waiting around to see if the enemies make it through or not into a feast for the eyes, keeping you interested in, even excited about whatever’s happening on-screen. There’s even camera wobbles for the particularly potent explosions, adding to the hightened action style of the game.

The sound effects are top nothc, and match the quality of the effects on-screen perfectly. There is an option in the settings screen to mute the sfx and music, too, though there doesn’t seem to actually be any music to begin with.

Overall

This game is probably the best implemented mobile title in the Turret Defence genre in the AppStore. And while the learning curve is steep, if you can stick with it, you’ll be rewarded by more awesome action and special effects blasting your retinas.

The Darkness II Interview with Seth Olshfski from 2K Games

On the 19th of January, Capsule Computers headed out to Insert Coin(s) to check out an exclusive hands on preview of 2K’s The Darkness II. While we were there we had a quick catch up with the game’s producer,  Seth Olshfski. Check out the interview below!

After this interview took place, we had a go at playing the game ourselves and got drunk, played pinball  and watched some epic artists draw some The Darkness II artwork on a giant canvas.

[pro-player width=’530′ height=’253′ type=’video’]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTQmFZsmKoQ&list=UUty2RXmg7-aijqWml8EZf3Q&index=2&feature=plpp_video[/pro-player]

What we unfortunately didn’t get on camera in the interview however was while we played The Darkness II, Seth Olshfski himself gave us a little commentary and an insight into what it was like making the game. He pointed out little details in the artwork to such as scratches and such to try and emulate that drawn-up comic book feel. Another cool thing is he mentioned how they secretly give you a tutorial on the first stage, where Jackie’s leg is injured and is dragged through a restaurant, while you must shoots enemies by not giving you too much stuff to learn straight away.

The most impressive part however is that basically writer Paul Jenkins is a bloody genius. His theory behind telling a story is to ‘do’ not ‘show’, so instead of boring cutscenes they did their best to get you involved and interested in everything that happens in the game. That’s epic!

The Darkness II will be available February 10 on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Kojima provides a sneak peek at some new content for ZOE: HD Collection

While we wait for Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection to arrive at our shores in March 2012, Hideo Kojima has provided an interesting update for his other HD remaster project, Zone of the Enders:  HD Collection in the form of a twitter update.

The twitter update offers two phone captures of what appears to be the exclusive new animated sequence planned for the release. The quality of the screen captures obviously isn’t good, but it’s nice to have a little sneak peek at some exclusive content.

Zone of the Enders: HD Collection is set for a Western release towards the end of 2012 with no specific release date announced yet.

Kid Icarus: Uprising goes Gold

Masahiro Sakurai, the lead designer of the much anticipated Nintendo 3DS exclusive, Kid Icarus: Uprising, has confirmed today that the game has officially gone gold.

This is good news for fans who have been eagerly awaiting its release as it was one of the earliest titles unveiled for the Nintendo 3DS and is the first entry that the franchise has seen in almost 20 years, with the last entry being Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters for the Game Boy in 1991.

Kid Icarus is expected to be released in all gaming territories in March 2012. The reboot of this cult classic franchise is soon upon us.

New Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock Screenshots

New screenshots for the upcoming Doctor Who video game entitled Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock have just been released today on the Doctor Who Facebook page. Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock developed by BBC Worldwide Digital Entertainment and Supermassive Games, marks a new series of Doctor Who console games.

The Eternity Clock features 11th Doctor and River Song, played by Matt Smith and Alex Kingston respectively travelling across the universe to unravel the mystery of The Eternity Clock. And by the looks of the screenshots there will trouble along the way with the classic Doctor Who villains The Daleks and more recently new villains The Silence.

Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock is set to be released for digital download on Playstation 3, PS Vita and PC in early 2012.
