Jelly Cannon Reloaded Developer:Nickelodeon Inc Publisher:Chillingo Platforms: iPhone (Reviewed), iPad, iPod Touch Release Date: Aug 23, 2012 Price: $0.99 USD/AUD – Available Here
Overview
Jelly Cannon Reloaded, developed by Nickelodeon continues the quality of Chillingo Published games with fairly decent mechanics and good graphics for the platform, along with bang for buck. The concept of shooting Jelly out of a Cannon doesn’t really make sense to me, I thought a slingshot would make more sense, however the premise does make for an amusing experience. On a side-note, if you ever watched The Office, Jelly probably reminds you of that episode where Jim put Dwight’s stapler inside some Jelly. I think that’s another great idea for a game, pranks that involve using Jelly.
Visuals and Audio
Jelly Cannon is a nice looking game for what it is, no doubt about that, it’s fairly similar to other Chillingo games I’ve reviewed but that’s not such a bad thing. Although the games character and influence is a little confusing, you wouldn’t know by looking at it that it’s a partnership between Nickelodeon and Chillingo and I suppose that takes away from the final product. The only thing that gave it away initially was the “more nick” option in the main menu, in saying that the animation is fantastic and so it should be, considering Nickelodeon is involved. Especially on the eyes/face of characters, where most of your attention tends to focus if you’re like me. Add to that the colourful, playful nature of the interface and vibrant textures, you’ve got one decent looking game that caters to it’s market (kids). The physics are really what make the game though, and they don’t disappoint in the way they convey the substance that is Jelly, unpredictably awesome and silly.
Sound design isn’t as impressive compared to the animated feats of Jelly, for the most part it’s fairly spot on with the theme of the game, however there are annoying traits here and there. For example the yawning of the Jelly when stationary, Jelly yawns!? Also the sound effect on the shooting of the cannon is pretty bland, but credit for the suspenseful music on more difficult levels even though it hardly changes. It’s not a total feast for the eyes and ears, you’re attention is more focused on the Jelly, which they’ve done right and that’s the most important part.
Gameplay
Most people have played physics slingers by now on a mobile platform (hello angry birds), so what sets Jelly Cannon Reloaded apart? Well for a start you have to make all the jelly blobs touch each to clear the levels, sounds sort of silly and creepy doesn’t it? Well it’s charming to watch all the jelly form to a larger piece, while none can be lost or it’s game over. You basically start with a cannon on the left and aim to shoot, the goal is to figure out the best way to get around all obstacles and effectively make all the Jelly fall on each other. Depending on how far from the cannon you touch the strength of the blast is determined, it’s pretty basic and similar to something like Ragdoll Blaster if you’ve played it.
Level design has good balance between power shots and the more precise lobs, but there are some rather annoying levels, like the final level in the first chapter. There’s basically a series of platforms that need to be tipped over, one after the other, so they all level out, but before you have to fire a cannon shot through the gap to tip a sunshine globule into play. It was really quite frustrating, stepping over the line to challenging and down right annoying. But here’s the kicker, there’s a way out of the more difficult levels and it’s quite a clever monetization ploy. It works in the form of a device that magically draws everything together in the level, each use of it costs $0.99, pretty evil when think about all the kids playing the game. For all the adults though, it can be quite fun or frustrating to get three stars on all levels, you’ll have to attempt more than twice atleast.
75 levels and probably more to come, it’s really quite a fun little game, despite the shortcomings of some frustrating level design.
Overall
Jelly Cannon Reloaded is one of the silliest puzzle games I’ve played, I’d conclude by saying it’s got entertaining graphics, awesome substance involving Jelly and value for money. While the level design, questionable in-app purchase options that take advantage of the kiddies and some missed opportunities on sound design, you’re still playing a pretty decent puzzle game. I like aeroplane Jelly and I like Jelly Cannon Reloaded, Jelly Cannon Reloaded for me.

Recently on his Formspring profile, Binding of Isaac creator Edmund McMillen, announced that the game will be expanding from the PC onto consoles. The expansion will have around 50% more content then the PC version (Wrath of Lamb expansion included) says McMillen, “The remake will be more than just an expansion, it will be a new game with all new graphics, music, etc it will also feature an expansion sized pack of all new content, bosses, characters enemies, items etc”. Along with brand new content, there will also be a local co-op mode, which is pretty exciting news!
No word yet what consoles the game will be ported too, but given the lack of success with the 3DS version of the game, can we expect Nintendo to not be one platform this Indie game will make it to? McMillen is hopeful it can make all platforms, but we will have to wait and see.

Twisted Pixel’s next game LocoCycle has been pretty stark in information since its teaser trailer back at E3, but that’s been turned around in time for PAX Prime 2012. Finally having a gameplay trailer, which can be seen at the bottom of the page, players can checkout I.R.I.S., the super agent motorcycle as she fights a plethora of enemies using guns and martial arts.
But, the gameplay trailer isn’t the only video released for the game as a “Behind the Scenes” video shows off the voice actors for both I.R.I.S., the main character, and S.P.I.K.E., her nemesis. Who did Twisted Pixel get? Lisa Foiles and Robert Patrick, respectively. To check out that video players can see the video embedded just below.
Beyond the videos, Twisted Pixel has also said that special real life motorcycles designed after I.R.I.S. and S.P.I.K.E. will be unveiled at PAX Prime 2012. Built by Southern Metal Choppers and Legacy Effects, the former Stan Winston Studios, the motorcycles are full sized, weighing more than 600 pounds and took more than four months of work to create. Handcrafted and hand painted, I.R.I.S. is over 8 feet long and S.P.I.K.E. is over 9 feet long, but unfortunately not street legal.
Twisted Pixel will be at PAX Prime showing off not only LocoCycle stuff, but contests and demos for their other popular properties.
Today Square Enix launched their brand new cloud gaming service called Coreonline which will allow gamers to play HD games in their PC browser. Developed by a company called Hapti.co, gamers can play on IE (don’t do it) FireFox and Chrome.
Currently the Coreonline service is only offering two games, Hitman: Blood Money and Mini Ninjas, while Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light will be available in October. Now what makes Coreonline so interesting is the fact that gamers can play all the titles on it for free, as long as they choose to watch some advertisements first.
What I mean is, gamers can simply watch a few ads on the Coreonline website to earn minutes of gameplay. This means that gamers can simply watch a minute long advertisement and receive around 10-20 minutes of gametime. If you choose not to watch ads or want to skip through them, you will have to pay for the game’s you want to stream. Those interested in checking out the site for themselves can find it here.
There shouldn’t be any Objections! to Capcom bringing everyone’s favorite lawyer Phoenix Wright and his three games to the iPhone and iPad this fall season. Well, unless they slap a ridiculous price on all three of them considering most fans probably already own the games in some way or another already.
Either way, this fall the container app of the three games will be released for free and you will be able to purchase the individual games in the trilogy: Ace Attorney, Justice for All and Trials and Tribulations inside. Not much has been said yet as to whether or not these iOS releases will see any significant improvement over past releases.
If you were thinking that the beauty of Bastion needs to be in portable form then you are in luck because today Supergiant Games revealed on their blog that they will be bringing the game to the iPad on August 30th. The title will not be a simple port job as it will also include Retina display and Game Center.
For those attending PAX Prime, the game will be playable during the event at booth #6019. To go along with the game’s announcement the company also released the below reveal trailer and revealed the game’s cheaper $4.99 price point, making it a rather cheap alternative to the console and PC versions of the game.
