Inio Asano’s Nijigahara Holograph manga licensed by Fantagraphics

nijigahara-holographFans of Inio Asano’s dark and poignant body of work have reason to smile today with news coming in that North American publisher Fantagraphics have licensed Asano’s Nijigahara Holograph manga for English language release.

Asano is well-known for works like Solanin and What a Wonderful World! both of which were previously released in their entirety by Viz Media. When asked about the licensing of Nijigahara Holograph, Fantagraphics President Gary Groth has this to say:

“Inio Asano’s Nijigahara Holograph is both a departure from and entirely consistent with our growing line of manga graphic novels. It is considerably and consistently darker than either Moto Hagio’s or Shimura Takako’s work, using a much more deliberately involuted literary structure, but it’s also in keeping with our editorial imperative to publish unique artistic voices. We’re proud to make this landmark work available to an American readership.”

DmC Devil May Cry’s CG trailer brings the action

dmc-devil-eyes

As you may or may not know, Capcom is planning on launching DmC Devil May Cry in a little under two weeks on January 15th for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. As such, the company has released a CG action trailer featuring the new version of Dante taking down a couple of demons/a fat-cat executive.

The trailer can be found below and you can direct any complaints about the way Dante looks and how the game may or may not play like the rest of the game’s in the series into either the comments below or directly to Capcom themselves as this game has appeared to be quite divisive amongst the series’ fan-base.

Laike’s PC Download Deals 04/01/2013

steam-sales-04-2013

2013. Gotta get used to typing that!

Steam starting the year with a bang by announcing an encore weekend to the Steam Holiday Sale. The most popular titles are going on sale from 10am PST on Saturday,January 5th to 10am Monday, January 7th. Steam has the Trine franchise, Crysis franchise, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and Rage for 75% off, Sleeping Dogs for 66% off and Forge for 50% off. I highly recommend picking up Trine, Amnesia, and Sleeping Dogs. Amnesia is considered to be one of the scariest games ever made. Trine on the other hand is one of those indie darlings that absolutely deserves a play through. Sleeping Dogs is a fantastic Hong Kong cop movie twist on the open world Grant Theft Auto type games that really captures the soul of Hong Kong well. Check out our review of Sleeping Dogs here.

Yesterday’s Daily Deals are still applicable on Steam with Bastion, Civilization series, and Thief series for 75% off. Tropico 4 and most DLCs are 80% off. I Am Alive is 66% off and Football Manager 2013 is 50% off. If you’ve never played the Thief series, check it out. It is the inspiration to Dishonored and among one of the first stealth games to utilize the shadow system. Bastion is another must play and is at an unbeatable price. I also recommend Civilization IV and V for strategy game lovers who haven’t yet purchased it. If you are purchasing Civilization V, Gods and Kings expansion is a must buy. I personally adore Tropico 4, its a good improvement over the Tropico 3, but if you didn’t like the third one, 4 will not change your mind.

Greenman Gaming has posted a brand new 20% off voucher that can be used with almost every PC download title on their site. Just paste in GMG20-PJFEW-Y16HK when you are checking out. GMG also has Devil May Cry 4 on sale for 66% off and 2d shoot’em’up Sine Mora for 75% off. Super Meat Boy is 74% off and is a highly recommended buy if you enjoy platformers.

Amazon has their Editor’s Choice of 2012 sale going on right now. Certain people who purchased games in December have received a 5$ off coupon to use during this sale. Check your email for an email from Amazon sent a few days after your purchase to see if you qualify. Particular deals of note include the Desert to the Sea Bundle for $9.99 (down to $4.99 with credit) that includes Bioshock 1 & 2 and Spec Ops The Line and the 2K Strategy Super Pack which includes Civilization V: GOTY, Civilization V: Gods and Kings, Civilization IV: The Complete Edition, and The Stronghold Collection for $19.99 (down to $14.99 with credit).

Gamersgate has Fallout New Vegas for 75% off at $4.99. No DLCs are included, but $4.99 is a fantastic price for an excellent game. Fallout New Vegas activates on Steam so you will be able to snag the DLCs for 75% off when it goes on sale on Steam.

BioShock: Ultimate Rapture Edition officially announced

ultimate-rapture-edition-01

With BioShock Infinite set to come out on March 26 (barring further delay of course) it seems that Irrational Games and 2K Games want to make sure that everyone is up to speed on the series so far. As such these companies have officially announced that BioShock: Ultimate Rapture Edition, a combination of both BioShock and BioShock 2 plus $40 in DLC for the games, will be available on the PS3 and 360 on January 14th for only $30.

Besides containing plenty of DLC packs for both games, some of which were console specific before, there are also a few brand new inclusions with this release, such as a tour of the never-before-seen BioShock museum where you can find early concept art and character models all set within the halls of Rapture as well as some collectable stickers featuring Bioshock Infinite.

Johnny Impossible Review

Johnny-impossible-01
Johnny Impossible
Developer: UFO Interactive Games
Publisher: UFO Interactive
Platforms: Nintendo 3DS
Release Date: December 17, 2012
Price: $5.99 Available Here

Overview:
The Johnny series has two previous installments that has had a generally positive reception. The games revolve around Johnny in different roles and even game genres. This particular game shows Johnny in the role of a non combative spy that must rely on his stealth skills rather than taking down enemies. The game certainly starts of strong, giving the player high hopes for the rest of the game, but degrades over time.

johnny-impossible- (1) Story:
The evil Dr. Wang has put a giant laser into orbit that threatens to destroy the entire world if Johnny does not shut it down. There is the beginning of a fun narrative style like that of the Paper Mario games, but it is soon forgotten about completely never to be seen again.

Visuals and Audio:
There is a certain style to the game that gives it a cartoony look. The environments and character designs of both johnny and the enemies go together well in a dark cyber punk/spy movie way. Everything is one dimensional and 3d is rarely used, however that is not entirely important seeing as this is a 2d platforming game. It just comes off as bland after a while. The music is also nothing special. When Johnny is sneaking through areas there is a spy movie like sound track that repeats, and when he is detected the music becomes more frantic with sirens. If you deactivate the security in an area, you will hear calm elevator like music that seems similar to that of Apature Laboratories ambiance.

Gameplay:
Johnny Impossible brings a lot of interesting gameplay mechanics to the table, even if it doesn’t come together as a game very well. You cannot kill enemies in this game, and there are not that many to begin with.
Most the the game is avoiding being detected by various security systems. For mobile security systems, you can temporarily stun them and run past but that is all you can do. You cannot destroy anything with a weapon, you must deactivate them via a terminal. The game is difficult in that you must learn the map and replay it in order to successfully get through it, which some would find to be enjoyable.

johnny-impossible- (2)There are many items you can use to sneak around, each having a meter that shows how long you can use it at a time but the meter recharges as soon as you stop using the item. There is a problem with the meter sometimes not recharging all the way up, and that is not a part of the game but rather a glitch which is very game breaking. Sometimes the controls for different items are not as tight as they should be, and upon getting items the explanation for how to use them is vague at best. This leads to frustration at the design of the game, rather than with the game itself.

The part where Johnny Impossible shines is the way it handles punishing failure. Instead of having a set number of lives, you have a time limit for the whole level. When you are detected by anything, you automatically lose 2 seconds from your time limit and must try and leave the area or hide as soon as you can. 5 seconds after being detected a drone will come and shock you, at this point you can either continue and lose 2 minutes off your time limit or you can revert to a previous save. The game can be unforgiving in this, and if you don’t plan out your path accordingly you could be stuck in insufficient time to finish the level.

Overall:
Johnny Impossible has a a few strong points in its gameplay that make it different from other games out there, but overall it falls short of a truly enjoyable experience. You can still have fun with this game, you just have to be patient with some of the short comings. It seems as if the game tries to stretch itself too far with all the ideas it had, but could not finish in any one task. It is extremely respectable that is tried new things that don’t usually fit in today’s market for mainstream games, and for that it should be praised. Not many games these days go for more than just shooting the enemy and solving a simple puzzle. The penalties for death recall the older days of gaming when levels required you to really use your brain. Lives meant something and in Johnny Impossible, time is just as valuable. Without having everything handed to you, the game is anger inducing but once you finally finish the stage you actually feel like you accomplished something. This game could have been great and new and different, but it spread itself too thin. Hopefully next time they can stay the course on which ideas they can follow through on.
