borderlands-2-new-character-class

Sometime soon it seems that Borderlands 2 will be given one more playable character as downloadable content. There currently are no details about what the class itself, but the latest teaser trailer shows that it is apparently an “escaped experiment” and it looks like some type of escaped convict from the outline.

It seems that the company will be revealing the class fully during PAX East on March 24th during their Inside Gearbox Software panel at 12:30PM to 1:30PM. Of course if you can’t make it to PAX East, well there is always the internet and your helpful Capsule Computers crew ready to let you know the official word.

Dollar Dash Review

Dollar Dash
Developers: Candygun Games
Publisher: Kalypso Media
Platform: XBLA (Reviewed), PC, PSN
Release Date: March 6th, 2013
Price: 800 MS Points – Available Here

Overview
Back before online multiplayer brought players from across the world together against each other, all players could could do was play against bots or try to round up 1-3 friends to throw down.  Games like Bomberman 64 didn’t worry about screen-looking as all the players are all already looking at the same top-down arena.  Dollar Dash is the kind of game that hopes to bring back those fond memories and hope to improve on them as well.

Story
The story of Dollar Dash exists in the vaguest of senses.  Players control their little thief as he robs a variety of locations and the other thieves that are hoping to do the same.  Other gametypes have the thieves only contesting against eachother, but throughout all the games players are awarded cash that ranks up their personal little thief, which can also be spent on upgrades, perks, and cosmetics.  What’s better than a pinstripes shirt thief?  A pinstripes shirt thief with a cowboy hat and a big, bushy beard!  In the end though, there is no story just a cartoonish criminal avatar.  But, that’s fine too.

Gameplay
As stated before the bulk of the gameplay falls into the gametypes, which is condensed down to the most basic three Dollar Dash, Hit ‘n’ Run, and Save the Safe.  The most complicated, which isn’t really, of these gametypes is the Dollar Dash, as it is the most noncompetitive.  The goal is just to gather money from the ground and drop it off, it isn’t completely noncompetitive though as players can steal money from each other and the more money a player has in their bag the slower they go, providing a healthy balance.  The tutorial for the game itself introduces the concepts of the premier gametype wonderfully.  Short, simple, and to the point, after the tutorial explains the basic controls all players have left is the items.

If items were opulence, this game has it in nines.  With three different item slots, for offensive, defensive, and buff, players have a huge selection of items to use to help themselves and hurt everyone else.  Snowballs, fireworks, giant boulders, just to name a few the items fit the cartoony style perfectly and are simple enough to understand at a glance the first time they are picked up, no need for a lesson or tutorial for each one.  Plus, each game can be customized with specific items turned on or off to fit any preference.

Unlike the Dollar Dash gametype, the other two gametypes, Hit ‘n’ Run and Save the Safe, are directly competitive.  To win players must directly combat each other.  Hit ‘n’ Run sees plays in an all out brawl where landing knockouts grants a cash reward with whoever hitting the target first being the winner.  While Save the Safe is a mad game of holding the safe to score cash, while avoiding the attacks of the other players.  These gametypes require players to really know what they, and everyone else, are doing watching out for what other players have on them and what items are available to pick off the ground.

Where the games take place is a wide variety of maps that range from private gardens, city streets, to interior and exteriors of buildings.  There are plenty of maps to play on with 9-11 maps for each mode giving lots of options.  Maps also have preset items, but these of course can still be changed to preference no matter what.  This selection allows it maintain a sense of freshness for a good span of gameplay, but players will still find some favorites out of the bunch.

All of the gametypes see 2-4 of these little thieves as they try to get enough money to win. The game includes bots, for those who hate people or lack a connection to Xbox Live Gold, which is great to see in a game like this where bots made their biggest impression.  Players can have up to four players on their box however, so with enough friends, and controllers, they don’t even need to worry about bots or a connection.  Really, the ability to have 4 person local is probably the best thing about this game.  This makes it a fun and easy party game that lets plenty of people engage in at once.

Visuals and Audio
The game’s cartoonish looks and antics fit the premise and feel, which are even further accentuated by the music and sound effects.  This is what a current gen cartoonish game should look like, as even in-game the characters and items hold up even on a higher definition television, which is probably thanks to using the Unreal Engine.  The ridiculous get-ups and the whistle of items as they fling through the air towards opponents provide a silly over the top view of the world within Dollar Dash.  Given enough time playing the game players shouldn’t have any problem making a character look exactly as goofy and they want.

Overall
Dollar Dash is about everything anyone could ask for in a multiplayer game like this.  Four-person local, as well as, online means that players don’t need to worry about having to get people together to play, or the reverse of having to find a match over the internet.  Even the bots provide for a decent playing experience.  The older crowd can enjoy this for the memories and the younger ones can enjoy to make some for themselves.  While the upgrades and perks players can unlock are a little over the top, their inclusion doesn’t hamper the experience either.  Players looking for a party play kind of game may find it here.

GRID 2 Gets New Trailers And Screenshots

grid-2-logo-01

Today racing game developer Codemasters released “World Series Racing Part 1: An American Dream,” the first in a new series of trailers for the upcoming GRID 2.

As you will see in the video we’ve attached below this article, Patrick Callahan, the entrepreneur who founded World Series Racing (GRID 2’s fictional cross-discipline racing championship that runs throughout the game) introduces his vision for the series and its infancy in the USA.  He outlines two racing clubs, as well as Street Racing in Chicago, Track Racing at Indianapolis, and Road Racing on the California Coast.

The premise of the game feels like the setup for a fighting game.  Callahan wants to bring all of the best drivers from different disciplines together to compete for a single title.

GRID 2 will race into ANZ retail May 30 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC and is currently available for preorder.  Be sure to check out the gallery of new images below and, of course, check out the video we discussed in this post below.

BioShock Infinite: False Shepherd Trailer Sets Up an Amazing Story

bioshock-infinite-screenshot-01

In the latest and greatest trailer from 2K Games, we see culmination of some great gameplay and a compelling storyline, two things any good game needs in equal measures. The trailer itself is fairly spoiler free and is more along the lines of a main character focus rather than a story reveal one. Within, we see Booker DeWitt fighting for not only his own survival in the hectic Columbia, but also fighting for the life and safety of his quarry and soon-to-be partner Elizabeth.

Bioshock Infinite looks set to bring the outstanding play of the previous two games in the series smoothly to an entirely new location, which is great news for fans and newcomers alike. Judging by Irrational’s other entries, players can expect truly grey moral areas, a mix of brutal power and gunplay as well as a compelling world and story to pull any gamer through. Bioshock Infinite is arriving to stores worldwide on March 26th, for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC.

Be sure to watch out for that SongBird and check out the new trailer down below.

Persona 4 Arena may finally be released in Europe in May

persona-4-arena-gallery-mode

It’s been a long time coming but it seems that Persona 4 Arena will finally be making its way to Europe. I say it’s been a long time coming because Persona 4 Arena was first released in Japan and North America last summer and was supposed to be released in Europe by the end of August.

Well August came and went and now it looks like Zen United, the game’s publisher in Europe, finally has some sort of release window. On the company’s Facebook they stated: “We are now in submission for the Xbox 360 build of Persona 4 Arena. Though dependent on when it passes, of course – I think it’s realistic for me to say we’re looking at a May release.”

This is certainly disappointing for those who were looking forward to the title and considering the PlayStation 3 version of the game was actually region locked, a first for the PS3 market, even importers couldn’t enjoy the game.

“Never got around to playing Capsized when it was released for PC? Well there’s no excuse to miss out on it now Capsized+ takes all the exploration and combat of the original and reworks it to fit on the iPad I wouldn’t have expected Capsized+ to be so much fun on the iPad but it really is. Thanks in large part to the new control scheme.” – 148Apps

“Anyone who hasn’t played the original but always wanted to needs to try Capsized+. It’s a great port of a great game… Heck, even fans of the PC version might want to grab it because it’s more portable. And it gives them an excuse to play it again.” – my iGadget

Toki Tori 2 Final Screenshots Before Release

When last we had heard about Toki Tori 2, the game was going into the certification process with Nintendo, which of course means there isn’t too much for developer Two Tribes to do themselves.  So, instead of just sitting around twiddling their thumbs until hearing back, they have decided to release one final set of screenshots from the game.

However, it should be noted that developer Two Tribes wont be sitting idle too long, as they will be attending PAX East, at the Indie Mega Booth (number 679) from running March 22nd-24th, 2013.  Those attending and visiting them at the booth will be able to play Toki Tori 2 for themselves on the WiiU.

Back to the screenshots, which players can find the full-sized images of by clicking them in the gallery.  While, they don’t show off too much of the game, they do certainly show of the wide range of locations that Toki Tori will be visiting in the sequel.

Raven revealed as a playable character in Injustice: Gods Among Us

injustice-gods-among-us-raven

Today a new character has been revealed to be part of Injustice: Gods Among Us’ roster and boy will a few people be happy then sad. The good news is that the new character added into NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros’ fighting game is Raven. The bad news? What the world did they do to her design and voice work.

Anyways, you can check out Raven as she battles against Cat Woman in the reveal trailer below. Although her outfit may be something from the comics that I am unfamiliar with, one would think that considering most of the people looking forward to Injustice probably are more familiar with her Teen Titans origin and basis rather than whatever they have provided here.

Free-to-Play Dungeon Party Re-released to Steam

Maybe you remember and maybe you don’t, but Dungeon Party was initially released back in 2009 teams of up to 5 players each went at it to do the only thing people ever really go into dungeons for . . . Treasure!  Well, now it is 2013 and independent developer Cyanide Studio has re-released the free-to-play game onto Steam to be enjoy once again by original players and new alike.  Players get to choose a character and pick out accessories to use in-game, then while playing earn experience to get even more accessories to aid in future games.

What adds more into Dungeon Party than the standard dungeon diving affair, isn’t that the two teams are competing against each other, but that the teams are also competing for the treasure chests love!  What does the treasure chest love?  Long walks out of the dungeon and killing enemies apparently.

Players can try Dungeon Party out for themselves from Steam HERE and as an added bonus will receive 5 Cyans credit for joining in before March 31st, 2013.  Not sure enough yet?  Check out the gameplay trailer embedded below to get see it in action.
