Overview
Want to build your own Pokemon Paradise? Well,  that is the gimmickry and heartbeat that lies behind Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity. Over the years, the Mystery Dungeon series has served as a worthy spin-off for the famed franchise, introducing many to the roguelike genre and delivering a meaty storyline to accompany each generation of Pokemon games since Ruby and Sapphire. Gates to Infinity tones things down a bit while sharpening the image of the brand, making the niche genre more accessible to newcomers and ditching the 2D sprites for some nice, pastel 3D models. Does this Mystery Dungeon prove to be worth the trek to the bottom, or has this little lovable series stayed past its relevancy? Let’s find out.

Story
I, myself have played a good number of the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games in the past, and the main story at the core here stays pretty central to what fans will expect from the series. Players are transformed into one of five Pokemon, and get tossed into a little adventure as they try to find out more about this brave new world while partaking in rescue missions throughout a good number of randomly generated dungeons. The main story revolves around assisting your chosen partner to build their very own Pokemon Paradise, which means the main location where you get your missions will be one that constantly grows as the game progresses onward. Of course there is also an evil source that transformed you into a species of Pokemon to start with, so while you go on these little quests, you will also be hunting for answers.

To be honest, while intriguing – the whole Pokemon Paradise storyline is not quite where the enjoyment of Mystery Dungeon is found. Nearly every one of the side-quests where you are trying to solve other Pokemon’s problems have very rich plots covering issues with morality, bullying, friendship, and even death. Yes, there is a ton of dialogue within Gates to Infinity, but it really isn’t shallow text we are seeing here. These little quests have a lot of hidden messages, and at times it can feel as if you are watching an after school special due to the emotion the writers put into the script. If you played Pokemon Black and White, you probably seen that matters from the real world have crept into our Pokemon games. Pokemon International have yet again went this route when it comes to creating a story and while it can be hard to take such deep dialogue coming from these colorful little creatures, Gates to Infinity is a better game for it as there is never a dull moment.

Gameplay
Much like all Pokemon Mystery Dungeon titles, Gates to Infinity borrows heavily from the roguelike genre for it’s main method of combat and gameplay. For those unfamiliar, this means that the player is always placed in randomly generated dungeons that are full of enemies and power-ups, with the key concept of victory being survival until the end. This means that it’s your job to keep you and your squad at the time alive by utilizing the tools at hand during the course of the missions, while running into several enemy Pokemon that will be quick to surround you at a moment’s notice.

Each dungeon usually comes set up as a maze, with one staircase to be found to progress onward. Once players hit the bottom level safely, they can then finish a bonus objective such as the retrieval of an ally or item or a big boss fight, and then go back to Post Town to claim their reward of sorts. Now, this is just an example of a good set of the dungeons, as some feature minor environmental puzzles – where a piece of log or boulder will need to be moved in order to move forward. Instead of making the puzzle a thinking game, this title sticks to throwing enemies at the player as they attempt to progress, as every step you make is a step of your enemy as well. Think of it as a giant grid-based boardgame, where every player can move one square at a time. As you move, somewhere in the same floor of the dungeon, an enemy is getting closer to you. Gates to Infinity will even allow you to see this grid as you are in a dungeon as well, so much like the older titles, this is still a turn based affair when it comes to movement.

Combat is where the true strategy of Mystery Dungeon lies. Once the player encounters an enemy Pokemon, they can back up, move forward, or attack. By holding the L button, a list of your standard attacks will appear. Just like the main-line games, these attacks include each Pokemon’s basic moveset, where moves are able to lower speed, cause damage, raise defense, or cause an infecting status effect such as poison. Unlike the main-line games is that these effects can linger outside of an encounter. For instance, if a Pokemon uses string shot, you or your partner will remain slow until the effect wears off or a wonder tile is found to reset your Pokemon back to normal status. Yes, it can be a bit to take in if you are new to these parts of the Pokemon franchise, but returning players should feel right at home as things have mostly stayed the same.

While exploring a dungeon, one of the biggest elements of survival is item collection. Usually, items can be picked up from the floor or purchased from shops beforehand, and then used when needed. Most of these include the ability to boost HP in doses or knock out a nasty status that plagues you or one of your team members. Orbs and seeds are also able to be collected as well, but provide temporary abilities to boost stats or lay out a heavier offensive blow. Oddly enough, the game itself is not all that challenging outside of boss fights and due to the rather competent AI, I would imagine that a lot of you won’t be too worried about making it to the end of a dungeon before bottoming out due to the heavy amount of items that are found just about everywhere. There is even a handy little password system to obtain event items, so those of you who grew up entering codes to make life easier – well, you will probably enjoy the nice throwback option here.

One of the finest features of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity is the hefty amount of replay value. For starters, this title already can last a good 15-20 hours as it stands, but a new option has been added to give a greater challenge. By scanning an item with the 3DS’ outer camera that is shaped like a circle, the player can generate a challenging dungeon that opens up a new adventure of sorts. Yeah, it isn’t a fully featured add-on and is more of a way for players to get a little more out of the randomly generated fare, but I found it to be a welcome – if not pretty basic addition to the series.

Visuals and Audio
As I mentioned, most Mystery Dungeon titles have been 2D in the past aside from one WiiWare romp that never made it to the states. This title goes above and beyond to change that, adding in 3D models for every Pokemon in the game. Let me say that if you have been looking for a game with “popping”, colorful graphics on the 3DS, then this will be one of the finest choices you can make. The entire world has a light, pastel vibe, so even if things get serious during the story, the light-hearted nature of the visuals will take over to act as a safety net. Like it or not, this series main audience is intended to be young, and while older gamers will enjoy the more grown-up themes, the graphics were made to appeal to a younger market and do their part in keeping everything feeling very kid friendly.

Soundtrack wise, the tunes in Gates to Infinity are very light and subtle, much like the visuals. Most Pokemon games are known for their memorable and stellar soundtracks, but Mystery Dungeon is more about setting a mood rather than putting on a grand showing. Since text boxes are used for all dialogue in the game, there is no voice acting and instead little sound effects and still images to portray one character’s emotions. This does work just fine, but I think it’s about time to let Mystery Dungeon take a risk and add in a little more character. Sure, Pokemon cries work, but why not season the already different experience with some voices from the anime?

Overall
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity is deep yet shallow, simple yet challenging – but still proves to be the most stand-out addition of the series to date. This cast of generation five Pokemon tell a great number of stories that come together to teach life lessons, and while I still don’t know if I can say I learned anything from a colorful grass type in distress, I can say that it’s quite refreshing to see such an important franchise step up and try to add social skills to an already booming world. Pokemon fans, there is nothing stopping you from snagging up this little gem and taking in a brand new story to end the generation before X/Y are delivered later this year – as this title is definitely of the more memorable releases in recent years. Fans of rouguelikes however will probably find a greater challenge elsewhere. With all of that said, what we have here is a sequel that takes a step back, and then takes one step forward, but still retains all of the aspects that made it successful in the first place. Sure, it might be time to shake things up in a greater fashion, but for now, this side dish is one with a lot of heart, and acts as a satisfying side dish to keep that Poke-hunger at bay.

Kaspersky Keeps Gamers Safe

in-your-xbox-stealing-your-gamertag

One of the leading creators of anti-virus and security software, Kaspersky, have recently made it a point to notify gamers specifically that they are one of the largest targets in virtual attacks across the globe. This is because their software, the Kaspersky Security Network (KSN), frequently detects 7,000+ attacks per day aimed solely at the gaming community. For those that are curious, the KSN is a cloud based security network controlled by Kaspersky.

On the attacks, Kaspersky made the following statement:

“It’s important to treat your online gaming profile with the same level of security as you would your email or online banking details. Because all three can be just as vulnerable to attack from cyber criminals.” said Wayne Kirby, Product Specialist, Kaspersky Lab Australia and New Zealand.

So what do gamers really need to be aware of on the internet? Kaspersky answers with the following information.

Direct attacks

In order to trap gamers, cyber criminals send emails with malicious links and attachments, disguised as coming from a legitimate gaming site. In addition, Kaspersky Lab’s online database detects 5000 new malicious programs targeting online games a day.

Phishing sites

Cyber criminals create fake versions of well-known gaming sites with the hope of harvesting real password details from registered gaming accounts. In 2012, Kaspersky Lab recorded 15 million attempted visits to phishing websites designed to look like the pages of one of the largest developers of online games.

And lastly, some advice from the company in regards to keeping yourself and your information safe:

Tips to stay safe when gaming online

  • Always confirm the authenticity of emails before clicking on any suspicious links
  • Be suspicious of any gaming site emailing you to authenticate your details – rather than following the link, go directly to the site and login from there
  • Beware of downloading unofficial patches – sometimes Trojans are disguised as ‘bonuses’ and once downloaded, can steal all your personal data
  • Ensure your internet security system is kept up to date at all times to protect against the latest security threats

Pain & Gain – International Red Band Trailer

Pain-and-Gain-01

Paramount Pictures have released the Red Band trailer for their upcoming action-comedy – based on a true story – Pain & Gain, starring Dwayne ‘The Rock ‘ Johnson and Mark Wahlberg.

The Michael Bay directed film is coming out on August 8th this year, and is an obvious departure for the blockbuster director (although, as evident by the camera shots used in its trailers, he still shot it like a pure action film). This Red Band trailer, which can be viewed at the bottom of this article, gives a much better indication of the film’s sense of humour and should not be viewed by those under the age of 17. Personally, I was disheartened by previous promotional footage for the film, but it is now clear that much of the good stuff was restricted because of its mature nature.

I guess a “raisinette” joke is to be expected when dealing with body-builders…

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams XBLA Review

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams
Developers: Black Forest Games
Publisher: bitComposer Games
Platform: XBLA (Reviewed), PC, PSN
Release Date: March 21th, 2013
Price: 1200 MS Points – Available Here

Overview
While originally released for the PC back in October of last year, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams finally made its way to consoles, so that those that aren’t as interested in PC gaming would be able to get their hands on the title that found success through Kickstarter. Finally back on consoles since the release of the original The Great Giana Sisters, just well how does the game stack up as an XBLA title?

Story
Opening up to sister Maria being kidnapped into a dream world with sister Giana jumping in for the rescue, the main component of the story is based around Giana trailing behind and trying to catch up to save her sister from a dragon. What makes the rescue most difficult is the fact that the dream world itself is a nightmare reflected by the contrasting personas of Giana. Switching between “Punk” Giana’s nightmare of fairytale fantasy and “Cute” Giana’s nightmare of gothic fantasy will be the only way for Giana to make it all the way to save her sister. While the story itself is simple and straightforward it is also elegant in its execution, so that the main focus is the gameplay itself. With short cutscenes that are straight and to the point, dialog is completely avoided to provide an experience that can be enjoyed by anyone that picks up the controller.

Gameplay
This switching between her personas is the key component to the gameplay as each persona is equipped with a special ability that aids in solving the puzzles and overcoming the obstacles Giana must face, such as platforms only usable to one persona. While “Punk” Giana is armed with the more ferocious ability to dash in any direction, bouncing off walls or defeating enemies, “Cute” Giana can twirl through the air carrying her farther through the air and safely around dangerous terrain. While each persona is the host of their specific ability, an interesting aspect of gameplay is that the world can still be twisted between personas during their use, so “Cute” Giana can start twirling and change into “Punk” Giana creating another layer to the puzzle solving.

The controls themselves with the Xbox 360 controller function wonderfully with face buttons controlling jumping and each special ability, while the triggers are reserved for twisting the world around Giana. Those familiar with the controller should have no issue being able to pick up the controls right away, though getting used to Giana switching personas on the fly when pressing the button to use an ability does take a little getting used to, however after mastering becomes second nature. There doesn’t seem to be any way that controls could be moved or changed to improve functionality at all and feels perfectly designed for consoles.

Besides just puzzles and obstacles, Giana faces a whole host of enemies as well, that also change with the environment, from owls and knights in armor hassling “Punk” Giana to devils and skeletons harassing “Cute” Giana. As the enemies themselves change with the environment, the game looks to color to indicate how specific enemies move about, as some will remain on platforms and others will drop down to the next. This provides a unique solution to a unique problem in aspect to the game itself for how to handle varying enemies, and is a solution easy to understand as well.

Along with the enemies in each level are the gems, that Giana collects along her journey to save her sister. Coming in three different colors, the gems add a collectible aspect that reinforces the twisting nature of the game world. While the blue gems can be picked up by either persona, yellow gems can only be collected by “Cute” Giana, and red gems by “Punk” Giana. Not only do the gems provide a main component by requiring enough to face bosses, they take the collection aspect in a different turn, instead of simply how can Giana reach up there, but how can “Punk” or “Cute” Giana reach up there.

With all of these different aspect as well as big boss battles, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams provides even more with additional modes. While Score Attack and Time Attack change the goal of each level to see how well a player can do, Hardcore Mode and Über Hardcore Mode are where fans of older games with crazy high difficulty will get the more fun, frustration, or both. While Hardcore Mode tasks players with completing each level in a single life, Über Hardcore Mode tasks them with beating the entire game in a single life, which is pretty crazy for a game where one hit means death without a pink gem shield. Those that like to have more to do in levels after finishing the campaign will find plenty here.

Visuals and Audio
As almost every aspect of the game rests on the contrasting personas as well as the environments they must traverse, it’s great to see that the visuals are of such great quality. The screenshots here are a perfect representation of the visuals in gameplay, which are absolutely awesome to see as Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams is one of the best looking games to come to the XBLA so far this year. What’s more, the visuals aren’t the only aspect that twists with Giana as the soundtrack features “Cute” and “Punk” music that also match the environment, though players that prefer one can set up the music to a single option throughout. The visuals and audio not only highlight, but add to the unique gameplay.

Overall
Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams is a great platformer that not only works well on the Xbox 360 and with the controller, but provides gameplay that doesn’t get stuck behind or nailed to a narrative. With outstanding looking visuals and a soundtrack that not only fits, but morphs to match the game world, platforming fans that missed the PC release and are looking for a campaign with unique gameplay and plenty of additional content should be able to find it here. Plus, with controls that perfectly suited for a controller the game fits right in on the XBLA.

Leaked Xi3 Piston info reveals portable gaming option; other features

piston-x13-leak- (2)

New information on the Xi3 Piston has been passed along to us via an anonymous source that has provided some pictures and information on the new console after they attended a private event to showcase it.

There will be three different modes for the console: Desktop, living room, and “virtual reality”. It was not said what exactly “virtual reality” was, but it seems promising and is being shown as a portable option for the X13.  You will also be able to play games from every platform of all time according to the following statement by our source:

“He said that they used to be roms/emulators, but declined to say how exactly they were packaging them now, but it doesn’t sound like emulation. Said they were playing some of the oldest games at the office. Would not mention titles, mentioned working with developers.”

There will also be content pre-loaded on the Piston which will include free games and other content including free to play games. There was no explicit mention of any titles.

During the Q&A there was no explanation on how the Piston or the OUYA were going to do “virtual reality”, but the people working on the Piston liked what the OUYA was doing. On the topic of the Piston being a “Steam Box” the representative said they consider any 32 or 64 bit computer a “Steam Box”. Their biggest hurdle is that a lot of people don’t even know the Piston exists, because most of their focus has been on business. The Piston was designed for the best components with the least amount of heat generation, and they believed that AMD was the best option because of their combined chips.

Take a look at the photos below.
