Tiger and Bunny Part 1 Review

 tiger-and-bunny-part-1-screen-1

Tiger & Bunny Part 1
Studio: Sunrise
Publisher: Siren Visual
Format: DVD (Reviewed), Blu-Ray
Release Date: March 21, 2013
Price: $49.95 – Available Here

Overview:

Reading the name “Tiger and Bunny” really doesn’t do this series justice, it seems a little sissy and possibly like this is NOT an anime about Western-like superheroes who compete with each other to save lives in incredible ways, knowing anime though it could’ve been about a Tiger and a Bunny living happily together…this is NOT that. Tiger and Bunny is a “once in a million years” type of anime that seems to slide into western culture well and fit like a glove, well, read on and I’m sure you’ll get all the info you need.

tiger-and-bunny-part-1-screen-2

Story:

Based in the city of Sternbild Tiger & Bunny mostly revolves around Wild Tiger, a veteran hero who’s starting to become more of a memory than anything else, and his new teammate Barnaby Brooks Jr. (Bunny), who’s an up and coming hero that has taken the hearts of all the citizens of Sternbild. They take place in a competition where different heroes are given points for doing certain things for example making an arrest gives a hero +200 points. The aim is to be King of Heroes while also keeping the city as safe as possible and with 7 or 8 heroes on it’s site it tends to stay pretty safe…until.

The most constant thing in the series is the relationship between Kotetsu (Tiger) and Barnaby (Bunny), neither like each other yet have to work together, typical buddy cop situation, and it kind of works really well. They start off just fighting and more so competing with each other than in the actual competition which, obviously, causes trouble while on missions and leads to a fight or some kind of yelling but over the series you do see this great development of friendship and trust. Tiger and Bunny shows you the development, crumble and rebuild of a friendship and it seems to do it a lot better, and in a more subtle way, than a great deal of animes I’ve seen. It even gets to a point where the tables are turned and it’s Tiger who can no longer rely on Bunny which is such a big flip from, let’s say, the first episode where they have to work together. They just did this so well.

Another thing I loved was the build in relationships with all the other heroes. This happened throughout the story very, very slowely but from competing against each other for their certain sponsors they actually came together to fight a common foe but it’s not even that, you get the feeling these people are becoming friends long before the big complication happens and they’re forced together. Antonio who is another hero (Rock Bison) has a very odd relationship with Kotetsu, he seems to know much about his past and constantly asks Kotetsu to come and drink with him to which he denies yet they still back each other up in battle when they truly need it, it’s just that which shows, in it’s most basic form, the different types of relationships in this show.

Next are the names that humans with extraordinary powers are given, each of the heroes is a next and it doesn’t really get brought up too much, at first. I liked how, although many people had these powers, the heroes were just heroes, although Next, there was no discrimination towards the heroes because they saved lives but as the story went on and showed the development of Next as another race and something unlike human beings that’s when things got muddy. While watching the show you forget about the entire understory of the Next race and instead focus on the Heroes, well, that is until the problem of the Next becomes extremely predominant but that’s later in the story.

As the show goes on we start to see more of the dark side of Barnaby Brooks Jr. All through the series he has his own little side projects, which you don’t see much of, which appear as something bigger later on in the story. This was done very well because it never threw this in your face, it alluded to it, then he spoke about it, then something came up where questions had to be asked, then action needed to be taken. It built up so well throughout the first half of the series. For an action packed anime like Tiger and Bunny it definitely has great story telling capabilities and so many, somewhat, hidden undertones that really make the story worth investing in.

Visuals:

Alongside the Audio, the Visuals are possibly the best parts of the whole series. Tiger and Bunny is one of those animes that mixes traditional animation and CGI animation together and it actually works. Both types of animation are as fluid as each other and compliment each other really well. Traditional animation is used for mostly everything and the CGI is used for when the characters are in their Hero Suits so most fight scenes are done in CGI which I’m so glad they did because it worked so damn well, it’s incredible. The characters and costuming were fantastic. Finally an anime where the boys aren’t drawn prettier than the girls! Barnaby was drawn somewhat feminine because, in the story, he’s supposed to be this young heartthrob so it makes sense as to why he’s kind of pretty. The cityscapes were beautiful looking and the way they designed the city, even by just looking at it, seemed extremely cluttered and pack full of people, like a metropolis is supposed to be.

tiger-and-bunny-part-1-screen-5

Audio:

I’ve seen this series twice now, once in Japanese and once in English and I have to say, while the Japanese Dub is mostly the way to go when it comes to anime, the English Dub really blows it out of the water like you wouldn’t believe. There was not one over/underplayed role nor was there a character whose voice was so annoying that it made me physically mad. It was doe so well that I actually laughed when they called for a laugh, the banter between each of the characters is hilarious, not to mention Kotetsu’s smart-ass attitude. In intense situations you definitely knew they were intense, the voice actors did a really good job on this one. The music in Tiger and Bunny was something else not to look past, every song fit perfectly and the use of trumpets, an underrated instrument, really made this feel like an old superhero movie; uplifting and triumphant. They used some opera, and a lot of genres you wouldn’t hear in a modern anime, when in disastrous flashbacks and times of suspense, you felt it all and it really doesn’t get better than that.

Extras:

Siren Visual really brought out the big guns on this one! Well done to them because opening up the DVD case was like opening up a Christmas present. So it comes with the standard on-disc content which is the clean versions of the opening and closing theme songs/movies and an “Inside the Studio” piece which is exactly how it sounds. Pretty standard. It’s what’s not on the disc that’s awesome! First of all it’s not set out like a normal DVD, it has a DVD sleeve with awesome artwork on the front and the DVDs are held in a tri-fold case which has an extremely detailed picture of Sternbild splayed across it. It also comes with 4 small, replica volumes of “Hero Weekly” the magazine from the series which has a bunch of information on characters and design notes inside but put together like a magazine. It also has, and this is my favourite extra, 4 Hero Card Replicas from the show! It’s safe to say the the extras from Tiger and Bunny out do any standard anime purchase I’ve seen before!

tiger-and-bunny-part-1-screen-3

Overall:

I truly think Tiger and Bunny is for anyone with a vivid imagination, honestly. It’s definitely not boring, it’s not overplayed or over acted and it doesn’t make you cringe. The female characters do just as much, if not more, than the male characters so it’s in no way sexist. It has humour and action and it just looks incredible! Obviously if you’re not at all a fan of anime it’s going to be a little hard to get into but I would recomend it with everything I have and I truly consider this to be one of those Gateway Animes, much like Cowboy Bebop, which will get you hooked to the anime style and, for sure, it’ll get you hooked on this show. This is one of my favourite shows and I hope it’ll become one of your favourites too!

the-evil-within-reveal

Back in April 2012, it was announced that Shinji Mikami would be working on a survival horror game that would be published by Bethesda. Since then, “Project Zwei” as it was called, has been silent. That changed today when Bethesda and Mikami announced that Project Zwei is now called The Evil Within and will be released on the Xbox 360, PC, PlayStation 3 and next-gen consoles sometime in 2014.

To go along with the game’s announcement, the company released a scary two-minute teaser trailer which you can check out below. According to Mikami, the game will be a “perfect blend of horror and action” though if this teaser is anything to go by, it seems to be almost all horror right now.

Skyrim: Legendary Edition Coming Soon?

skyrim-legendary-edition-pc-box

Is a new version of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim containing all downloadable content coming soon? Well according to Polish retail store Ultima this appears to be the case.

The Polish retail store has listed “Skyrim: Legendary Edition” for Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC.

The listing shows that the package will contain all released downloadable content including Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn and the full original game.

The game has been priced at roughly £35/US $54 for consoles and slightly cheaper for PC at £29/US $44. There has been no official word from Bethesda as to if this new package is real or not.

But considering the company has regularly released Game of the Year bundles for its previous games in the Elder Scrolls series Morrowind and Oblivion, as well as its Fallout series Fallout 3 and New Vegas. So it seems very likely that Skyrim: Legendary Edition is in fact real.

Furthermore, Bethesda recently announced that its Skyrim team was “moving on” from the game and won’t be releasing any more major content for it.

elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-screen-01

So given that there will be no more DLC for Skyrim, it make sense for them to bundle up the existing DLC and release the game as a complete package.

In the meantime check out our reviews of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and its DLC packs Hearthfire, and Dragonborn.

Nichijou – My Ordinary Life Collection 1 Review

nichijou-1-boxart
Nichijou: My Ordinary Life Collection 1
Studio: Kyoto Animation
Publisher: Madman Entertainment
Format: DVD
Release Date: March 20, 2013
Price: $59.95 – Available Here

Overview:
Nichijou – My Ordinary Life is one of those special anime gems that come along once in a blue moon. It claims to be ordinary but believe you me this series is anything but. While it falls under the slice of life genre it really deserves its own sub genre – slice of extraordinary life. This is an anime series that revels in the absurdity it indulges itself with all the while treating its bizarre happenings as ordinary. That in and of itself is part of what makes Nichijou so damn fun – the weird is normal and the normal is weird – Nichijou is genius.

nichijou-1-1

Story:
It is difficult to pin down a series as wild as Nichijou. There is a lot that goes into the fun this series creates, so much so that to put exactly how enjoyable this anime can be into words is no easy task to undertake. Put simply it is something very special.

The strange and more often than not over-the-top style of humour gives life to some of the most ridiculous scenes in anime history. To clarify I feel that previous sentence to be an understatement of just how crazy Nichijou can be. Underneath all of its crazy however is unbridled heart and deft intelligence.

While there is no exact concrete plot in Nichijou – My Ordinary Life, it does feature an uniquely engaging cast of characters and setting that lend themselves well to comedy and short-form story-telling. Episodes of Nichijou features a number of short stories or in some cases straight-up skits. Each segment generally involves something incredibly ordinary being treated in such an extraordinary way, for example in an early scene robot girl Nano tripping over results in an explosion reminiscent of the famous explosion seen in the film Akira. This over-the-top sensibility lends itself well to the comedic style of Nichijou.

Nichijou’s cast is immense and well defined, growing deeper and more established with each passing episode. Not only that but it has probably one of the most distinct and varied cast of characters in recent memory, featuring robot girls, talking cats and even goat-riding bishonen.

The core of Nichijou – My Ordinary Life is the way it finds the remarkable in the monotonous. Things that would be normal routine for most people become incredibly dramatic. That is where the comedy lies, in drawing out the ridiculousness in daily life. The ordinary is extraordinary in Nichijou and that is why it is so damn fun. The only problem with this release is that it ends too soon, thankfully Collection 2 will pacify any desires for more.

nichijou-1-2

Visuals and Audio:
Inconsistent animation can be an issue that many series face. Nichijou is consistently inconsistent, changing art style numerous times throughout even just a single episode. Through all of its changes though it retains a sense of consistency and upholds its high standard of quality that it sets from the very beginning. This is not something one can often expect in a comedy series, which is of course a genre notorious for low budgets in regards to animation. Fortunately Nichijou has no issues whatsoever and simply looks gorgeous from the start of this collection until its conclusion.

The visual variation on show in Nichijou – My Ordinary Life is remarkable to say to least. It does not fail to impress with unique imagery being showcased each and every episode. Not only that but Kyoto Animation have done an excellent job in terms of character designs. There is a distinct style conveyed through these characters, which does admittedly evoke a feeling similar to that seen in series like Azumanga Daioh. It is an appealing cute look that is as memorable as it is a pleasure to watch in motion.

nichijou-1-3

In terms of audio, Nichijou’s soundtrack is an impressive one by all counts. The incidental music is well timed and composed beautifully. The opening theme and ending themes are also well done. I noticed something interesting with the ending themes though, it appears as though they were remixed a few times throughout these first 13 episodes. Regardless it still sounded good in each incarnation.

Unfortunately due to problems caused by the collapse of Bandai Entertainment in America am English dub for this release was never produced which leaves this as a subtitle only collection. There is nothing wrong with that but it does take away from the overall product, which would have been well served by an English dub.

nichijou-1-4

Extras:
This particular collection features the first 13 episodes of Nichijou – My Ordinary Life, a great number of episode by most standards. It is a little unfortunate that there is not much in the way of bonus content for this release however. Madman Entertainment have included mostly standard extras like trailers, promos, commercial and textless songs. But there is something interesting to be seen in the alternative episode previews that they have included as part of the special features. It is a nice touch to an all round solid product.

nichijou-1-5

Overall:
Nichijou – My Ordinary Life is far from your ordinary anime. It is an incredibly enjoyable comedy anime series with a great deal of heart beneath its silly moments and wacky characters. There is so much fun to be had here that it is hard not to be swept up with Nichijou. This anime is something special, the kind of series that comes along very rarely, an anime series that is so fun that nothing else matters. Is it perfect? No, but then again nothing is. Nichijou – My Ordinary Life is unforgettable. The insanity, the ridiculousness, the silly stuff, I love it all. This show should have its title changed to Nichijou – My Extraordinary Life because it is just that – Extraordinary. I can’t recommend this series enough. If you are looking for something fun and can tolerate some silliness, then give Nichijou a go. It may just be what your ordinary life needs.
