Overview
The Guilty Gear franchise has had almost twenty releases on over a dozen platforms since the series first dropped back in 1998. Given the clout and history of such a long standing franchise, it should come as no surprise that PlayStation Vita owners would get a chance to jump into the fray and duke it out. The real question stands – is this game “Heaven Or Hell?” Let’s find out.

Story
Storylines in fighting games are traditionally pretty terrible. While they’re nothing spectacular, the stories for each of the 25 fighters in Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R offer a fair bit of variety, even granting the player choice as they work through each fight to complete their arc. The overall theme is no more special than any other fighting game out there, but completing the stories will give you something to work toward and add replay value.

Gameplay
Like the subsequent BlazBlue games released after it, the Guilty Gear franchise has always been able to pride itself on its fast gameplay and sharp sense of control. With the recent Vita release, Accent Core Plus R still brings players the tight, responsive control fans of the franchise have become familiar with. The combat is also satisfyingly fast and as visceral as anything you’ll find on a console today.

The game boasts an impressive roster. Though a couple of the characters are re-skinned forms of fan favorites, all twenty-five have their own distinct combat styles and move sets. This gives each player a chance to dive into a character, latch on, and really take ownership like very few others can. Seeing each character unleash their moves and combos can be a genuinely impressive feat, regardless of the character.

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R boasts eight distinctly different play modes. Though players will definitely have their preferred play method, the option for variety is something that few fighting games put effort into. It’s refreshing to see so much available.

Of those game modes, players will experience the standard fare of the classic Arcade game mode, practice Training game mode, and the character-specific Story game mode. Those who just want to endlessly battle it out can jump in for some one-on-one action with the Vs. CPU and Team Vs. CPU game modes, the latter of which offers a 3-on-3 brawl to whittle away your opponent. Players who really want to test their mettle will likely want to dig into the game’s Survival and M.O.M. modes to see how long they can last. Finally, for a bit more variety with a reward, players can take on Mission mode, where you’ll complete specific tasks in return for special art and other things to view from the gallery.

While the game brings a lot to the table in terms of gameplay modes and characters, it falls short in a few key areas. One of the first things players will notice upon firing the game up and jumping into a fight is that the game does not make full use of the Vita’s sizable screen. Cinematics and the like will show everything with the full screen, but once you’re in combat the sides of the screen will be filled with a logo, effectively stealing screen space and gimping your view.

While the controls for the game are precise and responsive, play periods of any significant length will manifest with pain in your hands after only a few minutes. This is no fault of the game, but its fast-paced, frantic nature will help reiterate that intense fighters were probably never meant to be played on something with controls so tightly packed together.

Finally, and most significantly of all, Accent Core Plus R‘s online mode is completely impotent. One of the strongest aspects of any fighting game is its community, and players looking to hop online for a pickup match will be sorely disappointed with the Vita’s offering. The game supports ad hoc game play, but let’s be honest – very few Vita owners outside of Japan will ever even have the opportunity to test this out. This feels like a huge misstep from Arc System Works that could really damage the staying power of this game long-term.

Visuals and Audio
The visuals in Accent Core Plus R are every bit as excellent as they have been on any console release. Each character is rendered in beautiful, vibrant color and the animation is smooth as glass. Even though some space is lost due to the sidebars that are inserted to the screen, the game still looks just as fantastic and fluid as it did in the arcade or, for that matter, current generation console hardware.

The series stays true to its roots with rock and roll tracks riffing throughout the carnage. Voice work is all done in Japanese, though subtitles can be changed through a variety of different languages including English, French, German, Spanish, and more. All of the audio is standard fare for the franchise and serves to give it an identity distinctly in-line with the rest of the Guilty Gear games.

Overall
Overall, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R is a great fighting game that’s marred by a few unfortunate design decisions. The game has fantastic action and beautiful visuals. The completely gimped network play will undoubtedly damage the staying power of the title as well. While gamers with an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 will likely just want to wait for the update coming to the console versions, fans of the franchise or folks looking for a good fighting game on the Vita will undoubtedly enjoy this game.

Thunderbird III Revealed for Fire and Forget: The Final Assault

You may or not have heard of the classic Fire & Forget, but soon everyone will be able to experience the game in a brand new way when Fire and Forget: The Final Assault comes to the PC/Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android. Now the main gimmickry of the classic was the rides, and to show just what this title is capable of, this remake will feature the Thunderbird III – which Anuman Interactive revealed today.

As you see in the screenshots, this is one beastly vehicle and is sure to cause plenty of mayhem on the road. This is also a chance for you to see this particular car in close-up form, and if just this one is any indication, we are in for what looks to be like one beautiful game. Fire and Forget: The Final Assault releases in just a little over two weeks, and stay tuned as once there is more information released, we will be sure to bring it to you here.

Metro: Last Light’s Anna Questions in Redemption Trailer

It seems that the latest trailer for Metro: Last Light goes to show that Anna, the best sniper in the Spartan Order of Rangers and daughter to current leader Miller, does not hold a very high opinion of Artyom. Which might not be too surprising for those that happened to check our Hands-On.

So, what does all this mean for the player? Well, more than likely the actions of Artyom will carry quite a bit of weight through the game, but what that means to the player will be up to them. If Artyom is indeed the last hope for humanity, will he pass it on or extinguish his light and everyone elses with it?

Players wanting to hear Anna’s words for themselves can watch the trailer embedded below, and those who wish to find out where Artyom’s actions will lead him can see for themselves when Metro: Last Light releases May 14th in North America and May 17th in Europe for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Original Shantae heading to the 3DS Virtual Console in June

shantae-gbc-box-artToday Wayforward had great news for fans of their games. The original Shantae game is going to be making its way to the 3DS Virtual Console sometime closer to the end of June. The game was originally released in 2002 on the Game Boy Color but despite being published by Capcom, it became a rather rare title that is expensive to purchase nowadays.

As such, Shantae will be available on the 3DS eShops in North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand for a currently unannounced price but it will certainly be cheaper than what a physical version would cost nowadays and more details have been promised closer to the title’s release.

Dynasty Warriors 8’s roster expanded with two new Wu warriors

The Dynasty Warriors franchise has been around for quite a long time now and with a roster already bursting at the seams with playable characters, trying to squeeze more unique fighters out of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms is probably becoming a difficult task.

However Tecmo Koei was up to the challenge because today they have announced two more warriors which will be joining the battle for the Wu forces in Dynasty Warriors 8 . The first is a skilled veteran named Han Dang who is a humble man and a dependable leader, though he is jealous of his fellow officers and their quick rise to fame and the second is named Lu Su, a governor-general that has the trust of his people and is a capable diplomat that is trying to put an end to the war raging throughout the three kingdoms.

To go along with these two new characters, the company provided the below images of Han Dang and Lu Su. Dynasty Warriors 8 is currently set to be released on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on July 12th in the West.

Theater of War Detailed for Company of Heroes 2

The last time we heard from Relic Entertainment and SEGA about upcoming Company of Heroes 2 they had announced the Digital Collector’s Edition and its pre-order bonus. One part of the pre-order bonus stuck out however, as it was a mini-pack for a mode previously unknown, but today they have released all the gritty details on the Theater of War.

In hopes of providing players with even more content and gameplay, the Theater of War serves as a means to both allow players to see different battles of the war from different viewpoints and bridge the singleplayer and multiplayer. With solo challenges where players must face odds stacked against them or commanders with unique playstyle and co-op scenarios where players can go at it with a friend, Company of Heroes 2 will launch with a total of 18 missions split between the Soviets and the Germans. In addition to the mini-pack from pre-ordering, more Theater of War missions will be released after the game comes out.

Players will be able to experience the Theater of War for themselves when Company of Heroes 2 releases for PC on June 25th, 2013.

 

New Watch_Dogs Trailer Reveals Release Date and UK Editions

Ubisoft’s new IP Watch_Dogs has had much buzz around it since its reveal at E3 last year. Since that time more information has been releasing from securing its release date to this year, to confirmation on next gen consoles, to the last video they released last month. But now new information has hit like a car smashing into a retractable traffic barricade.

The new video gets more personal, but not too personal, with the main character Aiden Pearce letting players get to know him a little and what he’s trying to accomplish. The true depth of information doesn’t come  until the end where the release date has finally been confirmed as November 19th in North America and November 22nd in Europe. In addition to the release date the trailer shows off the penultimate edition of the game the Dedsec Edition.

Featuring plenty of physical and digital bonuses, the Dedsec Edition includes:

  • The Uplay Exclusive Edition (Only at the Uplay website): Includes only has the one physical bonus of an exclusive Steelbok™, but will include all three digital bonuses of Palace Pack, Signature Shot, and Breakthrough Pack.
  • The Special Edition (Only at Game in UK): Includes only the digital bonus of the Breakthrough Pack.

Jamie King joins Soul and Vibe Advisory Board

Rockstar Games Co-Founder, Jamie King, has recently joined forces with Soul and Vibe by taking a role in their advisory board. Having a background of Co-Founder and VP of Product Development with a successful franchise will certainly make any career movement quite noticeable. With games likes Grand Theft Auto, Max Payne, and Red Dead Redemption at his back, Jamie King will not doubt make a positive impact for the growing game company. Soul and Vibe’s CEO and President Peter Anthony “Tony” Chiodo had the following to say regarding Jamie’s decision to join their board:

We are very excited to have Jamie on board with Soul and Vibe. He knows how to conceptualize game experiences and transform them into hugely successful franchises. Diablo 3 for PlayStation 3 Now Available for Pre-order

Diablo-3-Ps3-Cover-2DDiablo is about to invade the PlayStation 3. Gamers can now pre-order Diablo III at retailers to receive the exclusive Infernal Helm item, which provides an experience boost to the wearer. Certain retailers are providing special bonuses in addition to the Infernal Helm.

“In addition to including all the improvements from the PC version over the past year, we’ve made several updates to Diablo III for play on the PS3. IllumiRoom Demo Released

The IllumiRoom team at Microsoft Research released a demonstration of their new technology designed for the next generation Xbox console. The system currently works with a Kinect sensor and a wide angled projector. Eventually, the system will be a small coffee table based unit.

The IllumiRoom is able to expand the game to reach beyond the television screen and take over the living room. The projector is able to produce a variety of effects, allowing the surrounding living room to match the art style of the game, expand the peripheral field of view to include the rest of the room and more.

The project was a joint effort between Microsoft Research and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The full research paper can be found on the official Microsoft site.
