The Witch and the Hundred Knight
Developer: Nippon Ichi Software
Publisher: NIS America
Platforms: PlayStation 3 (Reviewed)
Release Date: March 25, 2014
Price: $49.96 – Available Here

Overview
Nippon Ichi has been feeding gamers across the world a steady diet of role-playing games for over twenty years. With dozens of Ā established titles under their belts like the DisgaeaĀ and Hyperdimension Neptunia franchises, their fanbase has developed certain expectations. How does their newest title,Ā The Witch and the Hundred Knight measure up, though? Will it take the world by storm or should it stay in its secluded swamp stronghold?

Story
Nestled deep within the lands of the Niblhenne Swamp lives the infamous, dreaded Swamp Witch, Metalia. For a hundred years, she and her nemesis, the beloved Forest Witch, have feuded, arguing over who is the more powerful spellcaster. Afraid to leave the comfort of the noxious swamplands, Metalia performs a summoning ritual to bring forth a mighty demon known as “The Hundred Knight,” to spread her swamplands ever further and help defeat her rival. When a small, unassuming creature steps through the portal, however, the boisterous, foul-mouthed Metalia begins to lose faith. After some quick pointers, she sends him off to face his destiny with little hope of victory.

Gameplay
Though one could callĀ The Witch and the Hundred Knight a role-playing game and leave it at that, doing so would be a great disservice to anyone with more than a passing interest in the game. While it’s true that you gain experience, level up, and equip new gear,Ā The Witch and the Hundred Knight is far more complex than the label “RPG” leads on.Ā With a little deeper analysis, you’ll come to see thatĀ Hundred Knight is part role-playing game, part action game, and part rogue-like.

The combat inĀ Hundred KnightĀ feels deceptive, continually growing more complex as you play it. To attack foes, you run up and jam on the square button, trading blows for spent stamina. You can equip up to five weapons at once, covering a range of classic fantasy weapons: swords, axes, hammers, spears, magic wands, and so on. Each equipped weapon grants the Hundred Knight an additional attack in his combo, granting its own unique characteristics (and weaknesses) to punish your foes. You can even chain certain weapons together for increased effect. Given the right circumstances, you can take on swarms of foes at once, but the game will be quick to punish you for shooting from the hip.

As the story progresses, so will the fighting capabilities of the Hundred Knight. He’ll eventually unlock different “facets” that have unique abilities and attributes. Each facet also levels up on its own, encouraging you to swap as you play.

Each mission in the game has the same basic overall structure. You’re placed into a stage with a map marker at your goal. As you move around, you’ll uncover more and more of the map, occasionally wandering upon “pillars” that serve as checkpoints. Breaking pillars open will flood the area with swampland, giving you a place to rest and an opportunity to spend “grade points” you earn in combat for temporary stat boosts. At the end of each level, there will be a boss of some type you’ll need to defeat. They often guard a major pillar Metalia needs crushed to extend her swamp.

the-witch-and-the-hundred-knight-screenshot-03

The real meat of difficulty in The Witch and the Hundred Knight comes from restrictions placed on you during missions. In honor of its rogue-like roots, you’re limited on time and action within each mission. You start each mission with 100 “Gigacals,” represented by a flame burning on the head of Hundred Knight. Over time, these will drain (whether because you chose to spend time exploring or because you died and had to borrow from them to refill your life), putting our protagonist in a real bind when the flame burns out. He’ll start to take continual damage, eventually dooming him to an early mission end and trip back to Metalia’s home.

If you’re the sort of gamer who likes to grind for levels and get ahead of the curve, you’ll feel woefully ineffectual with The Witch and the Hundred Knight. Some regular enemies can quickly swarm and overwhelm you and, worse, they level up alongside you, leaving you with few options other than fleeing or taking your chances. It makes you feel powerless, adding to the frustration of the Gigacal system.

To its credit, the game’s cast of characters is a lively one. Metalia is not only known for her evil – she has the skimpy uniform and foul mouth to back her reputation up. Her witty butler, Arlecchino, oozes sarcasm and humor. Hundred Knight alone is mute, choosing to take in the goings-on around him.Ā The story is one that has the potential to be both interesting andĀ side-splitting, but extended text-driven story sections that keep you from the action too long help quench that flame.

the-witch-and-the-hundred-knight-screenshot-05

Visuals & Audio
The Witch and the Hundred Knight feels surprisingly weak in terms of visuals. As we near the end of the PlayStation 3’s life cycle and the next generation is picking up steam, it’s surprising to see a game with somewhat lower graphical fidelity. Don’t get me wrong – the hand-drawn character art is fantastic and the colors they use are vibrant and eye-catching. The environments, however, look muddy and character models occasionally feel almost fuzzy, especially when you take some of the sharp sprite-based titles Nippon Ichi is known for into account.

The audio design inĀ The Witch and the Hundred Knight is excellent. The soundtrack is light and whimsical, suggesting an air of goofy, joyful romping as you explore the magical lands. The voiceover work is delivered with as much vibrancy and gusto as you’d expect from the makers of theĀ Disgaea.Ā As cheesy as the lines can be, the voice actors did a great job with their delivery.

Overall
Overall,Ā The Witch and the Hundred Knight is an RPG with some good ideas that tried to do too much. Vibrant characters full of personality, excellent voice acting, and a great soundtrack help immerse you in the tale of Metalia and her Hundred Knight. Unfortunately, the Gigacal system coupled with combat that can feel both frustrating and downright unfair seriously hamper what could’ve been a wonderful experience. Couple that with meager visuals and some mechanics that feel overly-complex and under-explained, and all but the most ardent players will leave feeling somewhat confounded and underwhelmed.

Titanfall On Xbox 360 Pushed Back

Titanfall-screenshot-06

Sad news Xbox 360 owners. Today EA have announced that Titanfall, which was originally set for release on March 25th has been pushed back until April 10th. The developers Bluepoint Games need just that little bit more time to hopefully make the game stand up among its Xbox One and PC counterparts.

This is bad news for anyone who hasn’t yet made the jump to next-gen but was holding out for this game but it is easy to see why they would want to make it the best experience possible, especially considering that it is already out on Xbox One and PC and has been garnering more than its fair share of glowing praise. Let us know in the comments below whether or not you were waiting for the Xbox 360 version of Titanfall, or your thoughts on the Xbox One/PC editions so far and remember to stay tuned to Capsule Computers for all the Titanfall news as it becomes available.

The Crew New Screenshots And Details

the-crew-screen-2

Details surrounding Ubisoft’s new open world racing game The Crew have been scarce since the game debuted at E3 2013 but recently 10 new screenshots were released through the developer’s Facebook, showing off some of the customisable cars and locales of the game. The most informative screenshot being of the world map, that reveals most of the cities and places available to race in and the various terrains you will come across. The map size for the game is aiming to impress, with the developers stating it will take about an hour and a half to drive from one side of the map to the other if using a fast car and sticking to the roads, while off road it will take about two hours and a half. Yesterday it was revealed there will be an optional 4 hour race that will take players around the entirety of the map. It’s no Gran Turismo endurance race, but I’m sure most of us are happy about that.

The Crew looks to blend single player and multiplayer seamlessly by combining the two game modes into one as the developers believe this type of innovation will be the core of this console generation as opposed to how HD was the focus of last gen. The game currently has no set release date as of yet but is confirmed for a 2014 release on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. You can check out the screens for yourself below.

Hit Indie RPG FORCED Coming to Xbox One

FORCED-Box-Art-01
Feel free to give it a go

At this year’s Game Developers Conference, Danish indie developer BetaDwarf has announced that their RPG hit FORCED is coming to Xbox One.

FORCED is a co-operative 1-4 player action RPG, taking place in a mysterious fantasy universe, where players are trapped as gladiators, forced to fight for their lives. Their only help is their Spirit Guide, Balfus, who’s the only one, who can interact with the many magical shrines, scattered about in the arenas.Ā Combat in FORCED is quick and reaction-based, utilizing a mark system, to allow players to use tactics where they are marking and finishing enemies between them. Players can choose between four different classes, each with its own set of skills and perks. And progress is carried over between classes, letting players experiment without risk.

FORCED-Screenshot-01
All great battles require some preparation

After a rather interesting production cycle, that included but was not limited to: living illegally in an unused university classroom, a team working for no pay up front, a Kickstarter and personal loans as security, FORCED launched to rave reviews back in Ocotber 2013. After selling 150,000 copies on PC, Mac and Linux, the game will receive a new lease on life via ID@Xbox, Microsoft’s new tool for indie developers to flex their creativity in the console realm.

Steffen Kabbelgaard (BetaDwarf CEO) said:

ā€œWe’re super excited to be working with the newest console technology, and we are really happy to be able to let a whole new group of potential gladiators experience our game….FORCED has been built from the ground up to support twin-stick controls, as well as online and local multiplayer, so the transition to console is completely natural. And with Xbox One, we won’t have to worry about shortage of computing power.”

FORCED-Screenshot-02
Go straight for the source

Though there is no firm release date for the Xbox One version of FORCED, Steffen Kabbelgaard has expressed that the process will be ā€œsignificantly fasterā€ than the development of the original version of the game. So good news there. In the meantime, enjoy the screenshots and visit the official site if you feel like learning more. Though it’s not like your being FORCED to do so…
