Strategy Games Get Invaded with X-Mercs: Invasion from Game Insight

Alien invasions and turn-based tactics come to iPad strategy games with X-Mercs: Invasion

Moscow and San Francisco – March 3, 2014 – Game Insight, a leading global developer and publisher of free-to-play games for all major mobile and social platforms is proud to present an explosive new addition to iPad strategy games: X-Mercs: Invasion. This epic turn-based strategy game puts players in control of a military scientific corporation that has only one goal – to fight off an invasion of vicious aliens bent on conquering Earth and destroying humankind!

X-Mercs: Invasion takes place in 2040, at a time when scientists discover a new natural resource: the energy-rich crystals known as “Advinite.” A massive conflict erupts over this valuable new treasure between the warring Red Dragon Union and North Atlantic Defense Alliance, leading to global devastation, both from the war, and from the environmental hazards caused by Advinite radiation—which creates mutant monsters that force humans to seek shelter in cities shielded by impenetrable force fields. Yet in the midst of the battle, humanity faces a new threat—an all-out alien invasion! This new threat forces humanity to create the Earth Council, an organization that decrees that the war against the alien invaders will be fought by private military companies. Players begin the game as the head of one such company.

In X-Mercs: Invasion, players will spearhead their very own military campaign by assembling an army of the finest mercenary soldiers in the world, constructing a military base, and researching and converting alien tech into deadly weapons to use against their extraterrestrial creators. In X-Mercs, players will find that the fate of mankind rests on their shoulders. Save the earth from a full-scale alien invasion and become a legend!

Strategy games will get upgraded, locked, and loaded in X-Mercs: Invasion–coming soon for iPad.

DYSTOPIAN CINEMATIC PUZZLE PLATFORMER “MONOCHROMA” TO LAUNCH THIS APRIL

DYSTOPIAN CINEMATIC PUZZLE PLATFORMER “MONOCHROMA” TO LAUNCH THIS APRIL

Nowhere Studios Announces Release Date for Methodical Journey of Bravery and Discovery

Istanbul, Turkey, March 3rd, 2014 – Independent developer Nowhere Studios, today announced that its 1950’s influenced cinematic puzzle platformer “Monochroma” will launch on Windows PC, Mac and Linux on digital download distribution service Steam in April 2014. Set in an alternate dystopian state during the 1950’s, Monochroma follows the story of a boy and his brother who witness a horrific crime committed by an evil corporation. Narratively led with no cut-scenes, text or spoken words, Monochroma offers a deep visual, intellectual and emotional attachment, as the brothers work together to progress past devilishly clever puzzles to save their world from tyranny.

“Monochroma mixes the paranoia and dreading forbode of the 1950’s with the recent geopolitical landscape of protest, upheavals and revolutions, and builds an alternate universe that places gameplay, atmosphere and narrative above everything else,” said Burak Tezateşer, Executive Producer of Monochroma. “We’ve been inspired by a mix of influences, from classic video games from our childhood including Abe’s Oddysee and Heart of Darkness, to classic tales such as Red Riding Hood and the Wizard of Oz and the urban architecture of the 20th century”.

Inspired by the developers’ childhood memories of moving from the countryside to urban Istanbul and the “Gezi Protests” of 2013, the most violently oppressed protest in modern Turkey, players discover the environment and follow the story through a carefully constructed black-and-white palette with splashes of red. As a result, the story is instantly understandable by players of all nationalities – without any localization required.

Spread over four chapters, discover vast ghettos built upon thousands of sheds reaching into the clouds, a labyrinth of sewer tunnels, factories bellowing out industrial smoke and a city sized zeppelin hovering in the sky. The puzzles encountered in Monochroma are realistic and use physics to naturally blend in with the environment.

Another Monochroma trademark is the relationship between the two brothers. Early in the game, the younger brother injures his leg after an accident, and must be supported by his older sibling. At times, the player needs to temporarily stop carrying him in order to solve puzzles. However he can only be placed near safe, bright areas—because like most kids, he’s scared of the dark. This gameplay mechanic defines Monochroma as a cerebral, methodical puzzle game that rewards players who are caring and brave at the same time. Being a responsible older sibling is mandatory—just as in real life.

Monochroma secured a substantial portion of its funding via crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, concluding a successful campaign in July of 2013. Nowehere Studios will be debuting Monochroma at the Game Developer Conference in San Francisco from March 19th – 21st. To book a media appointment please contact: [email protected]

Golden Time Episode 18 Impressions

Golden-Time-Episode-18-Screenshot-2

Golden Time
Episode 18 – My Hometown

Ever since starting at college, Banri’s life has been full of ups and downs, but one thing has never changed – he has been avoiding confronting his past at all costs. Choosing a college in Tokyo, never talking about his accident, trying to ignore his memories as they re-emerged with ever-increasing frequency – his every action was a safety mechanism, but no more. This episode saw Banri head back to his hometown for his class reunion and, after some soul searching, he found everyone waiting for him with open arms. They regaled him with tales of his past and his desperate attempts to get girls, much to Banri’s shock and, in the end, he left with a whole new lease on life. No new shocks here, but it was definitely a thoroughly enjoyable episode.

Golden-Time-Episode-18-Screenshot-3

What could have been an episode packed with drama ended up taking completely the opposite route to what most people expected. The internet was packed with whisperings of people expecting Linda to suddenly blurt out her feelings for Banri which would have made the next few episodes interesting, but that led me to wonder if I had missed a key development somewhere along the way. There hasn’t been a point in Golden Time since episode 9 where it was ever even implied that Linda had any feelings for Banri strong enough to boil to the surface anymore. Her role in Golden Time, to me at least, has rarely been that of a genuine love interest, but more of a love that could have been, serving as motivation for the ghost of Banri to fight his current self for control. She is his sempai who he has to thank for helping him time and time again, but, as she said, Banri has Kouko and she has… (Mitsuo?). Thinking of Linda as more than a friend at this point is a jaded view that is grounded in a presumption that there must always be a second love interest, inspired by more mainstream romcoms which differ considerably from Golden Time’s amazing portrayal of a realistic relationship.

Golden-Time-Episode-18-Screenshot-4

Something that episode 18 exhibited which I did not expect were sudden flairs of much more exaggerated and detailed art than the usual underwhelming display that JC Staff churns out. All of the strained facial expressions lifted straight out of a cheesy sports manga made the dodgeball match a million times more entertaining and that wasn’t all! Kouko’s entire time on screen was spent either in odd cutaway scenes overlaid with hilarious yodelling music, scuttling around on the floor in an exorcist pose, or contorting her face into expressions that were, at times, terrifying and, at others, reminiscent of Charlie Brown which is a really obscure reference coming from a Japanese production if that was intentional. Obviously, it still wasn’t any Garden of Sinners or Madoka, but compared to the rest of the series in which I have only ever given special mention to the artwork once in my 18 impressions, it was a pleasant surprise.

Golden-Time-Episode-18-Screenshot-5

Banri can surely see the finish line now that he has taken such a big step forward. A man that Linda always saw as a, “reluctant survivor,” has travelled through the fog of his past and has come out of the other side with a new lease on life. He doesn’t want to be held down by everything that happened to him before and all that remains is to appease the ghost of his past. When he stood on the bridge where his problems all began, he saw Banri of the past and, when he fell, Banri grabbed him to which his ghost answered, “let me go.” Another enigma. What did he mean by that? Has he accepted the accident now and is happy to let it happen? Or has he just given up all hope to the point where he doesn’t care anymore? I hope we get some answers soon and with only 6 episodes left before we say our goodbyes to Golden Time, they can’t be far away. Until next time.

Golden Time is currently simulcasting on Crunchyroll where new episodes can be found each week and watched on mobile devices, consoles, smart TVs and of course on PC.

D-Frag! Episode 4 Impressions

D-Frag!
Episode 4 – They’re the Band of 14 Devils!!

After a substantial amount of review copies coming through the door and the pile finally becoming a little smaller, it is time to take a bit of time and relax with a bit with some D-Frag! which despite its rather basic visual style remains one of the more humorous shows of the season. Anyways, now that the competition between the real Game Creation Club and the fake Game Creation Club has ended, it is time to move on from the FuF festival but that doesn’t mean that Roka and the others aren’t going to be taking it easy anytime soon.

Now that the fake Game Creation Club has managed to retain its position, the group attempts to come up with a new name for the club and although Takao does her best to shoot down their ideas, in the end it doesn’t really matter since their lethargic teacher appears to let the group know that their club has always had an official name and much to Takao’s delight and Kazama’s sanity, that name is Game Creation Club (Provisional).

 d-frag-episode-4-screenshot- (4)

After the hectic festival events over the past few episodes it has been easy to forget that Kazama is actually a delinquent and the head of his own group of gang members, albeit the weakest in the entire school. However this comes back to bite him when he and his fellow delinquents come across the “Band of 14 Devils,” one of the most feared groups in the academy that has fourteen members in total and absolutely adore playing video games at arcades.

Despite being a random sounding gang, they turn out to be quiet threatening and despite Kazama’s best efforts, he is beaten and taken prisoner by the rival gang. Ironically after finding one of the Provisional club’s odd board game’s in his bag, the group 14 Devils begin fighting amongst themselves with even the leader trying to turn to Kazama to be a member of his team before finally smashing the game to restore order. Despite Kazama’s best efforts, it all comes down to the girls of the Game Creation Club (Provisional) and Takao to come and save the day in hilarious butt kicking fashion.

d-frag-episode-4-screenshot- (2)

What could have been a major issue that might have taken a few episodes to clear up, D-Frag! manages to clear it up in one in its hilarious fashion. It is also worth noting that learning the truth behind Roka and her true name in the school is hilarious considering how out of place she seems to be in most situations. Though when she gets serious she definitely is a sight to behold.

It appears that Takao will now be playing a constant role in the series which is a good thing as she is easily one of the best characters that the show has to offer. While Kazama usually plays the straight man to the club’s odd nature, Takao provides a fresh take on things and also throws a whole new slew of jokes at the viewer, though most of them revolve around her large chest and the fact that she pretty much is at the whim of the Provisional club.

d-frag-episode-4-screenshot- (1)

Although there was no major plot progression outside of Roka’s true nature being revealed, it is interesting to see the obvious growing tension between Roka and Takao when it comes to Kazama. Although he remains fairly dense to the events taking place, Takao clearly has some type of feelings for him and is easily embarrassed by the things he says and does while Roka ends up taking her jealousy out on Kazama with her “Ultimate Attacks.”

It is nice to note that the ending animation was given a slight adjustment to include Takao at the table now, though it still is presented in chibi fashion. All in all, this episode gave us a a bit of character development by showing Kazama’s devotion to the club as well as the lengths they will go to for him and some really great humor at times. It appears that the next episode will be similar to this one, with little in the way of development but more of the random humor that makes D-Frag! a great comedy which comes at you from many different angles but lacks real direction.

d-frag-episode-4-screenshot- (5)

Currently D-Frag! is available for streaming in the United States by FUNimation. As for the rest of our winter impressions, you can check out our Anime Impressions page.
