Girls und Panzer Complete TV Series Review

Girls und Panzer Complete TV Series
Studio: Actas
Publisher: Hanabee
Format:
Blu-Ray (reviewed), DVD
Release Date: March 5, 2014
Price: $64.99 – Available Here

Overview
Have you ever seen a World War II documentary and as you were shown footage of tanks rolling over the blasted steppes of Eastern Europe you immediately thought to yourself, “Hey, what if that Panzer IV Ausf.D tank was actually crewed by a team of anime girls? Wouldn’t that be cute and interesting?”

I certainly have. Which is why I was delighted when a niche title like Girls und Panzer was brought to Aussie shores by Hanabee. So what’s this “Tankery” nonsense all about anyway?

Story
Oarai Academy isn’t your normal school, believe it or not. The students there are taking up a long-lost subject that involves oil and gunpowder rather than paper and stationary. It’s called “Tankery”, or Sensha-do, and it’s the art of using real military tanks to compete with other teams. Think of it as a game of footy, only with armour-piercing shells instead of leather balls.

Miho Nishizumi is our main character, a bashful and likeable girl but one who’s also intelligent and skilled in Tankery. Opposed to taking part in the sport at first, she agrees to form a team for Oarai Academy along with an unusual mix of friends. This kind of setup isn’t new and we’ve seen it before such as in the mahjong anime Saki, down to the superior older sister who is something of an antagonist.

girls-und-panzer-screenshot-01

Girls und Panzer isn’t really about a grand plot. The brilliance lies in the team competition, the strategy of each battle and most importantly the authenticity of the tanks. You can laugh until your heart’s content for putting little girls in war machines but the creators have done their homework and definitely know their stuff. The anime features tanks from World War II, as well as the instructor’s modern Type-10,  in impeccable detail from the cockpit to the aiming sights and even the terminology. I learned from this show just how smart gunners have to be in order to calculate the distance to the target, and it involves a whole lot of math.

There are also clever cultural references placed throughout Girls und Panzer. Those familiar with tanks will smile when they see copious amounts of tea being drunk by the fancy team using British Churchills and Matildas while the feisty Russian team flawlessly recite (in the Japanese audio track) a famous song sung by the Red Army as they charge with their T-34s.

girls-und-panzer-screenshot-02

You’d think a sport like Tankery would result in fatalities but surprisingly that’s not the case. Girls und Panzer is all about fun, strategy and competition and no crew member is ever hurt when their tank is knocked out. How this is achieved is anyone’s guess but this is a deliberate design decision. The last thing you’d want to see is those girls get hurt!

Miho and her team start with a mismatched assembly of rusty tanks and learn through defeat how to achieve victory against teams that are technologically or numerically superior. They pick up upgrades along the way such as a longer barrel and armour skirts for the Panzer IV and by the end the girls from Oarai Academy are hardened vets with capable equipment. This is essentially a sports anime combining the military strategy and action we see in plot-centric shows with war elements.

Visuals
Girls und Panzer is pleasing to look at during its slice-of-life moments and even better when the action starts. Combining CGI with regular animation the tank battles are visceral, for want of a better word. The tanks are hyper-detailed, down to the individual nuts and bolts. The camera pans around the battlefield impressively and gives us awesome first-person views from the turrets of various tanks.

I actually haven’t seen any other anime use the camera pan quite as much as Girls und Panzer does. It gives us greater scope of the landscape and, more importantly, highlights the chessboard strategy during every intense tank match.

girls-und-panzer-screenshot-03

Audio
This is a show about tanks, so you’d expect the tanks to sound good. And they do. Main cannons sound punchy, treads creak and groan across terrain and the occasional machine gun fire sounds realistic complete with tracer rounds. The English dub performs surprisingly well, bar one annoying character, and the military terms used translate well into the English language. This is, after all, a method of warfare pioneered by the English-speaking West.

The music is lovely as well, with the soundtrack featuring military marches and themes remixed with a symphonic orchestra which adds to the authenticity of the show. The opening and ending themes are nice but a bit on the safe side. The opening is uplifting and catchy which is standard fare, but the ending is particularly cute with all the characters sticking out of their tanks in chibi form.

One complaint I have is that the famous Katyusha song which the Japanese voice actors sung so well isn’t even featured in the English dub. Whether it’s due to copyright issues or a decision made by Sentai Filmworks to not record the song with their voice actors. Instead we get traditional-sounding Tetris music which has no vocals while the mouths are edited to not move at all. My advice? Whack on the Japanese track just to hear the song at least once.

girls-und-panzer-screenshot-04

Extras
Included on the discs are clean opening and ending songs along with bonus episodes 5.5 and 10.5, which are essentially recaps of the show in case you forget what happens every several episodes.

Overall
Do you know your stalwart Sherman tank from your mighty Tiger tank? Then this is a homage to you, the military otaku. The authenticity alone is enough to send those nerve chills running down the arms of military aficionados.

Even if you don’t know your tanks this has all the qualities of a great sports anime. The competition, the bonding, the strategy and the tactics that are shown in almost every episode is enough to warrant a watch for those that enjoy these sorts of shows.

Also I have to applaud the fact that for once, thankfully, we have girls and weapons together in an anime without the cleavage getting in the way of the hardware. Now if you’ll excuse me I have a pincer maneuver to proceed with. Panzer vor!

Rambo: The Video Game Review

Rambo: The Video Game
Developer: Teyon
Publisher: Reef Entertainment
Platforms: Xbox 360 (Reviewed), PS3, PC
Release Date: Out Now
Price: $69.99 – Available Here

Overview

The Rambo series of movies are one of those cult 1980s action flicks that everybody talks about and remembers fondly. Sylvester Stallone’s John Rambo was the kind of shoot first and ask questions later kind of guy that people love to watch on screen. Now, more than 30 years after the original Rambo film we get; Rambo: The Video Game, a prime example of why many view licensed games as nothing more than cheap cash-ins.

rambo-the-video-game-screenshot-04

Story

Rambo: The Video Game takes place during the events of the first three Rambo films, and tells the story of John Rambo and his exploits. The premise of the story is tied together as a eulogy at John’s funeral, but it quickly becomes apparent that he isn’t dead, which leads into the game’s final missions, set during Rambo III. The Rambo story is pretty iconic nowdays, and the faux-funeral is a nice way to string them all together, but really you will have a much more enjoyable time if you just go out and buy the Rambo box set.

rambo-the-video-game-screenshot-05

Gameplay

Rambo: The Video Game is an on-rails shooter that is heavily inspired by the old Time Crisis light gun games that you would have found in the arcade during the mid-90s. The main problem with this is that it doesn’t offer light gun support and instead you have to control your aiming reticule using your controller’s thumb stick (or your mouse if playing on PC). You don’t have any control over Rambo as he ducks and weaves around various obstacles, or you know when he is just standing completely still in the middle of an open area. Your own methods of control are to duck into nearby cover (if there is any), aim and fire.

The game does also offer a co-op experience, but it is almost worse than the single player one. Instead of playing as another character (or even a clone of Rambo), player 2 simply controls a blue aiming reticule. That’s it. No gun on screen, and Player 1 still has total control over when they go into and out of cover while Player 2 is just along for the ride.

rambo-the-video-game-screenshot-03

When you aren’t aiming a reticule at wave after wave of shooting-gallery targets disguised as soldiers, Rambo has you partaking in quick time events. No, you read correctly – Rambo: The Video Game is a mixture of 90s styled shooting gallery, and quick time events. Worse than that, you can unlock a perk that allows you to automatically succeed any QTE section, meaning that you can just simply watch the game play itself right in front of you.

The game also has a meager 2.5 hour play time. There are extra difficulty options and the chance to replay missions at your leisure once you have unlocked them, but many players wont find any desire to do this.

rambo-the-video-game-screenshot-02

Visuals & Audio

Ok, I want to say something good about Rambo: The Video Game. It takes some impressive set pieces straight of the films and faithfully recreates them for use in the game, either in cinematics or actual gameplay sections. However, it becomes a wonder as to why these cinematics aren’t just the clips from the movies themselves, as the visuals used in this game are way below what was expected.

Honestly, Rambo looks like it is a game that was made for the PS2 era of gaming. Environments are blocky and lack textures, and character models are not only ugly, but are repeated over and over again. Areas would often be littered with a bunch of enemy clones. Worst of all is the fact that Rambo himself has probably the worst character model in the game. He looks little like a young Sylvester Stallone, and the model that makes up his limbs looks a lot like sausages all joined together. During the actual gameplay this isn’t a problem as it is a first person experience, but during any kind of cut scene that has John moving around, it is really unsettling to watch.

The voice work in this game is… well it is unique to say the least. Sylvester Stallone didn’t record any lines for the game, so instead all of his dialogue are just audio snippets from the films that are played whenever he is speaking. This should add a sense of authenticity to the package, but it just ends up sounding dry and forced – especially when everyone else has been recast and has actual voice work. Rambo’s voice isn’t the only one that has problems. Characters will repeat the same snippets of audio over and over and over again. Whenever you beat a level you hear the same speech, whenever you lose you hear the colonel yelling “John!” It all adds up with the poor visuals and lackluster gameplay to create a package that gets less and less appealing by the second.

One last thing about the audio; you know that iconic Rambo musical flourish? Well I hope you enjoy it, because you will hear it… a LOT. Much like the character and enemy voices, the same string of music is played ad infinitum to the point of exhaustion.

rambo-the-video-game-screenshot-01

Overall

Licensed games have copped a bad rap for years for being cheap, lazy productions that often poorly made in an attempt to garner a few extra dollars from a popular franchise. Rambo: The Video game is the absolute epitome of why people everywhere have this notion, and it seems to wear that fact proudly on its chest. Cheaply made, poorly programmed, nonsensical, and just plain unfun, Rambo: The Video Game really is your worst nightmare.

Tick Tack! hard copies now available for purchase

Tick-Tack-coverAs some of you may already know, MangaGamer has begun offering hard copies of a number of their titles and earlier this month the company had revealed that hard copies of Tick Tack! would be available for purchase later in the month. Well that time has come and copies are already being shipped out to those who have pre-ordered this version and there are still copies available for purchase right now at a price tag of $34.95 here. (18+ Only)

Now for those who are unfamiliar with Tick Tack!, it is a sequel spin-off of the Shuffle! PC eroge and follows Nerine’s story route past the original game. In this title players will follow Nerine back into the World of the Devils to spend some time with her family, only for Rin, Nerine, Mayumi, and Itsuki to be thrown back in time right before Nerine’s parents ended up marrying one another. When their appearance begins to mess with the timeline, players have the option to try and fix things or make them even worse than before, causing fluctuations with Nerine’s appearance and personality or even following a different route altogether.

Watch_Dogs Now Rated R18+ in Australia, Takes 35-40 Hours to “Finish”

Watch_Dogs-Screen-01

Via its Australian Classification Board listing, it has been confirmed that Watch_Dogs will be rated R18+ upon release in Australia this May 27th.

It now references “sexual violence and sex scenes”, which seems to be referring to additional content added since the delay and is the apparent reason for the MA15+ to R18+ re-classification. Ubisoft wrote up a new entry in their UbiBlog that discusses why the highly anticipated title was delayed in the first place, what exactly “extra polish” entails in this exasperated instance, and how different the final product will be due to the extended development time with a few specific answers. Creative Designer Jonathan Morin also revealed the length of the title, answering a curious fan on Twitter:

So although it may take the average player around 35-40 hours to “complete” the game (main story and a bit of free roaming), it would seem there is a ton more for true completionists to look forward to. I, for one, am extremely happy about that as open worlds deserve to be explored. And that doesn’t even take into consideration the multiplayer aspect, for which we might possibly see a beta. I’m interested to know whether the 6 month delay has diminished your excitement for Watch_Dogs at all? Let us know.
