Overview
Ever since THQ a falling out with UFC and went out of business, EA has been working on their own official UFC game. With their initial MMA offering back in 2010 and fans not seeing a new title since UFC Undisputed 3 two years ago, a lot of fans are eager to see if EA Sports UFC has what it takes to bring the sport to next-gen consoles. So does EA Sports UFC live up to the hype and fill the void that fans of MMA have been left with?

Gameplay
As soon as players start the game they are immediately thrown into a tutorial section playing as Jon Jones fighting Alexander Gustafsson. This is a wise choice as players will either be making their first foray into this type of game with EA Sports UFC or returning players might be stuck into the old controls scheme from the Undisputed series and things have changed. The tutorial gives players a basic rundown of stand-up and the ground game but unfortunately does a bad job of actually going in depth with these concepts.

Even when players enter the Career mode and are forced to play through another tutorial, every time I might add, where more of the game’s mechanics and controls are broken down, there are plenty of things left open. Whether this was intentional or not, players who want to learn how to do advanced ground transitions, sweeps, slam takedowns, and other more complex moves will need to explore the game’s Challenge option that goes into detail about the clinch game and everything else.

ea-sports-ufc-screenshots- (2)

Once you fully grasp EA Sports UFC’s control scheme then you will be in for one hell of an interesting fighting experience that despite its complexity it lacks substance. Sure there is an extensive list of fighters, ninety seven in total, with numerous fighters in each weight class, including female fighters, but there is a certain lack of unique capabilities for many fighters. Whereas past titles may have had more signature moves, a large number of fighters will have the same move set once they enter the cage, even if their entrance animations are more real to life.

Once the bell rings many things remain the same, as players have an exorbitantly large list of tactics to choose from, made rather complicated by the fact that some attacks require the player to be pressing three buttons at once, some of which have been expanded upon thanks to counter attacks doing an increased level of damage. This means that it is entirely possible to catch your opponent with an uppercut at the right moment to stun them enough for a follow up KO blow, even if they seemed perfectly healthy before then.

Along those same lines however, players can often brutally assault their opponent with knock out blows and they will shrug off moves that would have put any normal fighter on the ground as if they were nothing. It also doesn’t help that the hit detection in EA Sports UFC is rough at best. Multiple KO blows can be seen to miss their target entirely in replays and even at the best of times errant kicks or blows seem to do damage despite hitting nothing but air.

ea-sports-ufc-screenshots- (1)

This factor plays into all elements of the striking and takedown game, as attempting a shoot takedown and catching a knee to the face never ends well. Once the player is actually down on the ground however things enter a strange territory. You see, with the way that the ground game has been re-worked it makes transitioning a much easier affair if the player knows what they are doing. Players can attempt a stand-up by simply clicking the left analog stick and unless their opponent blocks, they will be able to stand up with ease. The same can be said for various transitions that require the opposing player to properly counter to keep you where you are meant to be.

It is also worth noting that the whole submission game has been revised and given a mini-game aspect that takes a lot of the realism out of a fight since it makes every submission attempt at least a three stage attempt that can be escaped entirely with one failed advancement. You see, once you attempt a submission by holding the right bumper and moving the right analog stick in a specific direction, you may pull your opponent into a submission. This brings up an octagon where, if you are putting someone in a submission, must use the right stick to block their escape attempts while also keeping an eye out for a prompt to move the left stick in the correct decision to advance the submission. This may make for a more interesting submission system but it really brings the fight to a crawl and seems to favor the attacker more than the defender.

ea-sports-ufc-screenshots- (3)

Now while basic exhibition matches are available alongside the aforementioned Challenges, players can also make use of the Career Mode that allows players to create their own fighter through a number of pre-set choices that limit your creativity a bit, and advance through the Ultimate Fighter. This mode is unfortunately as empty as it possibly can get since the Ultimate Fighter aspect is stripped of any complexity and even the fights are packaged deals that give the player zero choice.

Between fights players can perform extremely repetitive training exercises to raise their fighter’s stats and unlock various perks that can be used to specialize your fighter’s plan of attack, but it is a soulless affair made worse by tedium and true customization. Players will also be greeted by recorded videos from various UFC fighters and big names talking about their accomplishments, but these also become very repetitive considering how many fights you end up going through in career mode and you would think that after the fifteenth time seeing him, Forrest Griffin wouldn’t have to tell you his name.

ea-sports-ufc-screenshots- (4)

Outside of that there really isn’t much else to do outside of taking the fight online where players can fight in either unranked battles or in Championship modes that allow the fighter to battle other people online in an effort to advance up the rankings. The online code is very smooth and finding an opponent was never an issue as players can select from a list of weight classes to search for.

Visuals & Audio
Without a doubt in my mind is EA Sports UFC an amazing looking game. Every aspect of a fighter’s appearance has been recreated with impressive detail and realism. The entire game is presented with a realistic television feel that helps give every match a big fight feel. While basic matches aren’t given as much hype, championship matches feature extremely detailed entrances with the attitudes of the fighter matching their real life counterpart to the letter.

Once you are fighting in the cage the impact system used in the game makes many of the strikes look as painful as possible. A fighter’s skin will ripple or they will wince in pain as they take a body shot or a cut might open up on their face which will send sweat and blood flying as they are hit again. This makes every fight look as realistic as possible, though the knock out animations almost seem pre-set for certain blows which means despite how you hit an opponent, they might fall an entirely different way from where you struck them.

ea-sports-ufc-screenshots- (5)

All of this action is set up against some great commentary from none other than Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg, giving every fight a realistic feeling as these two discuss the match as it happens with seemingly flawless accuracy. There is also a decent mixture of background music that plays at the menu screens or loading screens, though as one would expect for a game like this, it is all rock or metal themed.

Overall
EA Sports UFC has all of the looks and details to be a great game but it lacks true substance. Outside of the basic exhibition matches, career mode is uninspiring and feels very repetitive, though at least it is supported by substantial online play. With an amazing presentation, tons of ways to take down your opponent, and the way that the fighting has been re-worked is a step in the right direction however EA is still lacking in a few areas that would have made EA Sports UFC a hit, but for now it is still an amazing looking, albeit slimmed down, fighter for fans of the sport.

Kazunori-Yamauchi-and-Jean-Todt-01

Per a new partnership with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), Gran Turismo 6 by Polyphony Digital will be the first video game to ever include FIA-certified content, with four of the title’s world-famous tracks granted certification by FIA officials after inspection.

The governing body represents nearly 80 million road and track users from 141 countries across five continents, and this new partnership with the Gran Turismo developer aims to connect the millions of GT fans with real-world motor sport fans in a well-integrated manner. Another direct result of the partnership is FIA and Polyphony Digital’s planned launch of an official FIA Online Championship by 2015. The virtual championship will enable the ever-growing Gran Turismo community, and motor sport fans around the world alike, the opportunity to engage with real motor sports.

Kazunori-Yamauchi-and-Jean-Todt-02

Jean Todt, President of the FIA, said;

This innovative new partnership will ensure that millions of Gran Turismo and motor sport fans can race on even more detailed tracks at home. The Gran Turismo series has played an important role in helping to attract a new fan base to motor sport. With the input of FIA in the development of the upcoming FIA Online Championship, Gran Turismo 6 will now offer an experience even closer to the real world of motor sport. We are also excited to be working closely with Polyphony Digital and Sony Computer Entertainment in the future to find new ways to continue to make motor sport more accessible to millions of fans that share a passion for racing.

President of Polyphony Digital Kazunori Yamauchi sees the collaboration as a “major step to forward our mission to connect our virtual and real racing worlds in a full circle, thereby expanding the population of car and motorsports enthusiasts in the world.”

New Trailer for Fan-Made 40K Movie

Lord-Inquisitor-screenshot-01

By the Emperor! A proud Imperial Citizen is making an animated movie set in the Warhammer 40 000 universe (40k). The Warhammer 40 000 universe is a science-fantasy universe owned by Games Workshop and is most commonly associated with a tabletop war game of the same name. 40k is renowned for its grim portrayal of a far future where humanity has regressed technologically and beset on all sides by ravenous horrors.  The trailer for the fan-made film, Lord Inquisitor, can be found below and looks gorgeous.

Although there isn’t all that much to see in terms of narrative, it does showcase one of the most iconic images from the 40k universe; a Space Marine in power armour (‘Tactical Dreadnought Armour’ to be exact). The mise-en-scene does a great job of conveying the unique flavour of 40k with jittering servitors and the dark, candlelit corridors of a sci-fi monastery. The voice-over does a great job of bringing the pathos of the universe to life with a baritone proclaiming that “I am the end”.

Lord-Inquisitor-screenshot-02

What’s even more amazing is that this is all completely unofficial with no backing from any major studio or even Games Workshop itself. In regards to its intellectual property Games Workshop has played things close to the chest and has previously terminated fan projects in the past, including another fan-made movie. The creator and director of Lord Inquisitor, Erasmus Brosdau, appears to be obtained permission for a go-ahead on his project and has even enlisted the efforts of Aaron Dembski-Bowden (who has previously penned official novels for 40k universe).

The film is due to be released some time either this or next year and if the trailer for this project is at all indicative of the final product; 40k fans will certainly have a reason to be excited.

Samurai Bride: Complete Collection Review

Samurai Bride: Complete Collection
Studio: Arms
Publisher: Sentai Filmworks
Format: DVD, Blu-ray (Reviewed)
Release Date: June 24, 2014
Price: $69.98 – Available Here

Overview
Some shows can boast about having an enthralling storyline, others can be praised for their amazing graphics, while other series can take pride in setting a new standard. Then there are shows that people watch simply to have a good time and maybe even a healthy dose of fan-service. Samurai Girls was a show that fell into that latter category as it had plenty of bare skin to show off but a decent amount of action and a likable cast of characters. As such with the sequel, Samurai Bride now available in North America, is this second season worth picking up?

Story
After the events that took place during Samurai Girls, Muneakira Yagyu, a man capable of transforming those he kisses into Master Samurai, went on a journey to train himself to become a better general. When he arrives back at his family’s dojo, what should have been a happy reunion turns into one of shock as he finds that the dojo has been transformed into a maid café.

samurai-bride-screenshot- (1)

He is informed by Yukimura and Sen that due to Sen’s brother claiming victory over the previous threat to Japan and poor investments by Yukimura, the dojo is in threat of being shut down. Because of this, the girls came up with the idea of creating a maid café to help pay off their debts and as such, Muneakira agrees to help out in order to help make ends meet, especially since everyone, including Juubei and Kanetsugu, are eager to help out.

The time of partially revealing maid outfits doesn’t last for too long however as shortly after Muneakira arrives, four Dark Samurai that have been resurrected from death have come looking to battle against Juubei who is incapable of using her Master Samurai powers after her own death last season. After being spectacularly defeated by these Dark Samurai, a curse is placed on Muneakira and if the girls can’t manage to bring Juubei’s powers back and defeat these samurai, the curse will strip Muneakira of his abilities and bring ruin to the dojo and the girls’ lives.

samurai-bride-screenshot- (2)

While the Dark Samurai obviously pose a threat, that doesn’t stop one of them from becoming a regular of the Maid Café who constantly antagonizes Juubei for being a fake. The first five episodes of the series focus on various elements of the Maid Café as the group tries to stay afloat, have a few skirmishes with the Dark Samurai, and even turn a new ‘character’ and an older character into Master Samurai.

After this point the series takes a bit of a different spin as the Maid Café is able to close and news reaches Yukimura’s ears that something stronger than a Master Samurai exists, something called the Samurai Bride. Once another new face arrives and begins training the girls to control their Ki in an effort to put up a fight against the Dark Samurai, the story shifts into one where a dark force is threatening the whole of Japan and the circumstances surrounding the Dark Samurai’s resurrection which may not be as simple as good vs evil as the series initially presents it as.

samurai-bride-screenshot- (3)

In many ways Samurai Bride feels the same as Samurai Girls, albeit with a different enemy and more time spent on maids and picking on Kanetsugu than introducing characters, but that isn’t much of bad thing as far as this show is concerned. The reason for that is because Samurai Bride is just a really fun series with plenty of comedic moments and just a general sense of silliness playing across the backdrop of an action series.

With the familiar characters being as likable as ever, a ton of fan-service, and plenty of situations changed up to keep things fresh, Samurai Bride may lose the plot at times with its silly nature, but it manages to deliver exactly what fans of the series are expecting. A nice comedic series with plenty of fan-service and a decent dose of action to keep the story flowing.

Visuals
As one would surmise, Samurai Bride has been released completely uncensored which means what was previously censored with ink splotches in the original showing, is now bared in its full chested glory. Every girl in the series at some point has her breasts exposed, whether it is in the bath, during a battle, or during one of the times the girls are messing around, there is plenty of nudity to be seen here, especially since one of the new characters literally fights naked outside of some strategically placed hair covering her nipples and convenient tail placement. Along those lines there are plenty of gratuitous panty shots as well, including a panty sniffing scene that is played seriously.

samurai-bride-screenshot- (4)

The overall look of the series remains similar to what was found in Samurai Girls with Japan being presented in a pseudo-modern form, with old style buildings everywhere despite there being computers and tablets that are used regularly and everything having a very stylized look to it. Character designs remain very much the same as well, with new characters fitting the theme well and even filling the kemonomimi quota. Of course these girls all have plenty of revealing outfits that change regularly to show off their assets, though it is funny that the whole maid aspect used in the beginning is usually more concealing than the clothing they usually wear.

Audio
The English voice actors from the first season return to reprise their roles in Samurai Bride which is great for fans who enjoyed the original English dub as I can say that the new characters introduced this season are presented splendidly, making Samurai Bride a series that viewers should enjoy just as much in English as they would in Japanese. There are a few awkward sounding moments however such as when the girls say “Moe Moe Heartbeat” which probably should have been said the same as the Japanese version.

samurai-bride-screenshot- (5)

As far as the soundtrack is concerned, Samurai Bride features some fitting background music for the genre but it can be a bit too simple sounding during calmer moments. The opening theme for the series is fittingly called “AI DO.” by Miyuki Hashimoto which works as a great opener for the series that rivals that of the first season while the ending theme is done in a comedic nature focusing on the maid aspect called “Kekka, Guuzen de Gozasourou,” and is sung by the Japanese voice actresses for Juubei, Yukimura, and Sen.

Extras
The special features for Samurai Bride are saved thanks to the fact that there are some nice shorts accompanying the release, as the other special features simply are various Japanese promotional material for the series, trailers for other Sentai Filmworks anime, and a three different clean versions of the opening theme and seven different clean versions of the ending theme.

samurai-bride-screenshot- (6)

There are six of the aforementioned ‘Samurai Bride Shorts’ that are numbered as if they were to take place between episodes, though the numbering of the last short really doesn’t fit. Each of these shorts are only about three minutes in length but in these three minutes viewers are presented a few members of the female cast in all different kinds of light-hearted fan-service heavy situations. So if you didn’t manage to get enough off of the man series, these extras should do the job.

Overall
Samurai Bride does little to change up the formula we were shown in Samurai Girls but for a series like this one, it works well enough. This fun little show has everything that fans of the first series will be looking for; Boobs, butts, action, and a new story to watch everyone’s favorite characters deal with. This is helped along by the new characters introduced along the way and just enough time spent on the fluffier aspects of the series before shifting focus to the actual story and bringing this new story to a fairly successful close.

Monster: The Perfect Edition Volume 1 set to be released July 15th

monster-volume-1-perfect-edition-coverThose who have been following the anime side of things should probably recognize the Monster series since we just finished reviewing the Australian release of the anime back in May. Well now here in North America fans of the Monster anime will soon have a chance to read the source material in an all new format as Viz Media is planning on releasing the “Perfect Edition” of the Monster manga starting on July 15th.

Monster: The Perfect Edition Volume 1 will be released on this date under the Viz Signature imprint and this print only release will be priced at $19.99. Such a price tag is for good reason however, as this is an oversized release that comes with a new translation, re-mastered pages, a generous amount of full color pages, and it also contains both the first and second volume of the series.

All future volumes of Monster: The Perfect Edition will be released four times a year in North America, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand with there being nine volumes in total. Viz Media describes the manga as such:

In Naoki Urasawa’s Monster, Johan is a cold and calculating killer with a mysterious past, and brilliant Dr. Kenzo Tenma is the only one who can stop him! Conspiracy and serial murder open the door to a compelling, intricately woven plot in this masterwork of suspense. In the first volume of the new Perfect Edition, everyone faces uncertainty at some point in their lives. Even a brilliant surgeon like Kenzo Tenma is no exception. But there’s no way he could have known that his decision to stop chasing professional success and instead concentrate on his oath to save peoples’ lives would result in the birth of an abomination. The questions of good and evil now take on a terrifyingly real dimension. Years later, in Germany during the tumultuous post-reunification period, middle-aged childless couples are being killed one after another. The serial killer’s identity is known. The reasons why he kills are not. Dr. Tenma sets out on a journey to find the killer’s twin sister, who may hold some clues to solving the enigma of the “Monster.”
