Overview
With the resources of Earth becoming a problem, humanity began preparing Mars as a suitable replacement. However after terraforming the planet for five hundred years, humanity returned to Mars to find that their plans had gone horribly awry as the cockroaches sent to the planet to help with the terraforming process had evolved into towering killing machines. After two failed attempts at reclaiming Mars, a new expedition has been sent to Mars with a new goal, but before they even land on the planet, it is clear this new mission is in trouble.

Story
Whereas the second volume of Terra Formars was spent explaining to readers that a new virus, the A.E. Virus brought back from Mars, has begun sweeping the planet with a 100% mortality rate, going over the plans for Annex 1 and introducing us to some of the new members of the crew, Terra Formars Volume 3 throws readers right into the middle of the chaos.

In the closing pages of the second volume cockroaches had somehow managed to make it aboard Annex 1 and have begun slaughtering the unprepared crew only for things to grow even more dire when the cockroaches, with knowledge that they shouldn’t possess, destroy the drug that allows the crew to transform. Forced to continue with the mission, Shokichi Komachi orders the crew to split into six different squads, each led by an officer, and escape the doomed vessel with escape pods.

Little do they know that while humanity has spent the last twenty years researching and developing new techniques in order to face off against the cockroaches, their foes are far from mindless. With a crashed base of operations, a crew split into six separate squads, a minimal supply of the drug used to fight the cockroaches, and a new type of foe that they are unprepared for; the crew of Annex 1 begins their desperate fight for survival.

Unlike the second volume, which was slow paced and featured little action, Terra Formars Volume 3 moves the story forward at a fast pace by weaving explanation and action together in a manner similar to what was present in the first volume. It quickly becomes clear that despite the Annex 1 project being organized by the United Nations, a traitor with other goals is either amongst the crew or had a hand in planning the mission. While this is an interesting twist that does help explain certain strange events, it also feels like the series is getting a bit sidetracked, especially since there is already such an uncaring and deadly foe waiting on Mars.

By forcing the crew to split into six different groups and forcing them to conserve the transformative drug, the stakes are raised even higher when it comes to fighting against the cockroaches in this volume and it definitely shows. Over half of the volume features the crew fighting against the cockroaches using their genetically modified bodies, but don’t let that fool you as the body count rapidly rises as background characters are brutally killed one after another.

Even characters that have seen a bit of development fall to the nearly invincible cockroaches who have managed to acquire some new techniques. These deaths hit home harder thanks to the fact that readers have been able to learn about the cast at least a little at this point and even if there is no time to mourn on the battlefield, these moments will certainly pull on the heartstrings of the reader.

As I mentioned, the return of information laced in with the action returns in this volume as the little facts about the insects that characters have been augmented with reappears as the new characters reveal their abilities and even information pertaining to the secret behind the now outdated BUGS transformation is revealed.

Artwork
Being printed under Viz’s Signature label means that Terra Formars Volume 3 is slightly larger than your average manga and it continues to benefit from these larger pages, especially now that the focus has shifted back towards the unique battles. The amount of detail put into the various metamorphoses that occur as the characters make use of their creature they have been altered with is very impressive, especially when stages of the transformation are shown on a certain special member of the crew.

It is also worth noting that since the action has returned, it also means that the blood and gore has as well and it is stronger than ever. Characters will be swiftly decapitated or lose limbs with a large amount of detail put into the gore of the body and even the deaths of the cockroaches have grown even more brutal thanks to some of the unrevealed abilities of the officer class.

Extra Content
There are three bonus pages spread throughout Terra Formars Volume 3 featuring detailed information about two members of the cast on each page. This information includes their procedure base, if it has already been revealed, age, likes and dislikes, as well as a brief summary of their personality and past, though for the female cast it will also include their cup size.

At the end of the volume a four page “unreleased layout” featuring very rough artwork is included and is described as something that was cut out of the chapter. This miniature story likely would have been an extended flashback and it is understandable why it was cut due to it not really adding anything extra that hadn’t already been focused on.

Overall
Terra Formars Volume 3 raises far more questions than it answers as the crew of Annex 1 struggles to survive against cockroaches that are stronger and smarter than they were prepared for. With Yu Sasuga managing to once again find a satisfying balance between information and action, this volume manages to find what made the first volume so great. There are a few concerning elements raised in this volume about where the focus of the story may shift but for now the series continues to progress down a gory path that readers can’t help but continue walking down.

Disney Infinity 2.0: Tinker Bell Review

Disney Infinity 2.0: Tinker Bell
Developer: Disney
Publisher: Disney
Platform: Xbox One (Reviewed), PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U
Release Date: Out Now
Price: AU$17.95 – Available here US$13.96 – Available Here

Tinker Bell, Tinkerbell, TinkerBell… However you say it (seriously, I’m not even 100% sure how it is meant to be written… I’ve seen it all three ways), Disney’s first fairy lady has arrived in Disney Infinity 2.0 with a hand full of pixie dust and is ready to stir up trouble. Tink is so far my favourite character out of the entire Disney Infinity 2.0 line-up and may even be my favourite character out of the entire franchise so far.

disney-infinity-2.0-halloween-screenshot-01

The Tinker Bell figure seems to be a cross between her Peter Pan iteration the the more recent Tinker Bell film series version (with a stronger emphasis on the latter). She is mischievous, cute and quite the powerhouse once you learn how to control her. As you would suspect, ole’ Tink can fly and the effect that surrounds her when she does is really quite pretty. You guessed it, magic pixie dust surrounds her as she takes to the skies and ducks/weaves around buildings and just about anything else you have planted in your Toy Box. Nova’s blue glow used to be my favourite in-flight animation in Disney Infinity 2.0, but the Pixie Dusts bumps old bucket head back into second place now.

Instead of being a traditional melee-based fighter, Tinkerbell uses her magic wand to throw blasts of energy from afar. Now, I haven’t seen any of the TinkerBell films so I don’t know if the magic wand is something that she has in those movies or if it was invented just for the game but I think it is pretty kick ass. However, Tink’s strength isn’t in her attack skills, but rather in being a healer and team-player. Pretty much all of the fairy’s skills relate to healing and shielding her teammates in some way, making her a likely candidate for a medic should you ever need one.

disney-infinity-2.0-screenshot-01

Not only is Tink’s flight animation unique, but so is the way she walks. Her walk is more of a… skip, she skips merrily from place to place. Even after you upgrade her running speed, she is still just skipping slightly faster. This alone makes the green fairy sparkle amongst the gang.

Physically, I would say that the Tinker Bell figure more closely resembles her original incarnation than anything more recent. However, this could be largely due to the fact that she has undergone the Disney Infinity make-over treatment to help her fit in with the rest of the gang. If it was possible, her features are even more cartoony, and she fits in more nicely with some of original Disney Infinity figures than any from 2.0.

disney-infinity-2.0-screenshot-03

Now as I’m sure you’re all aware, if you go to any halloween or costume party anywhere in the world, someone will inevitably show up as a slutty Tinkerbell. Now, Disney being the family-friendly company that they are do wise to not let their Infinity figure fall into the realm of indecent, however the dress she is wearing is a tad revealing, even going so far as to paint on a pair of green underwear for her. I don’t find the figure to be indecent or in poor taste, but I know that some people out there might not like the shortness of her skirt, so it is just a heads up for you guys out there.

So there we have it, I never would have guessed that Tinker Bell would quickly become my favourite character in a game that includes Buzz Lightyear and Spider-Man. I guess it just goes to show you how transcendent Disney properties are… or something like that, who knows – maybe I have just had pixie dust sprinkling over me and I am thinking positive thoughts so that I can learn to fly.

Disney Infinity 2.0: Hiro and Baymax Review

Disney Infinity 2.0: Hiro & Baymax
Developer: Disney
Publisher: Disney
Platform: Xbox One (Reviewed), PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U
Release Date: Out Now
Price: AU$17.95 – Available here US$13.96 – Available Here

Big Hero 6 is this year’s big outing from Disney, so I don’t think anybody was surprised when they announced that the film’s stars; Hiro and Baymax would be joining the Disney Infinity roster as part of the Disney Infinity 2.0: Disney Originals range. Although they are only playable in the Toy Box Mode, Hiro and Baymax really do make a big impact and are a tonne of fun to play.

disney-infinity-2.0-hiro-baymax-screenshot-03

Firstly we will talk about Hiro. After seeing the movie, I wasn’t quite sure how Hiro would translate across to the Disney Infinity world (seeing as he doesn’t really have any powers or special abilities/attacks in the film). However, I was pleasantly surprised with how well they made his character. Hiro attacks by using his Microbots to create waves and pillars that can hit enemies from quite a distance away, and pack quite a punch. The animation effect that the nanobots make as they unfurl into an enemy is unique and really helps Hiro stand out as a worthwhile character.

Baymax on the other hand is a character of raw power. Armed with his red/purple armor from the film and a bevy of karate moves, Baymax can absolutely crush entire hordes of enemies. His strength rivals that of The Hulk and Venom, and he is the only of the game’s big beefy brawlers that has access to the flight ability. Baymax also comes equipped with his signature rocket fist attack for firing at enemies from across the battlefield. If you are ever looking for a character to steamroll your friends in a multitude of challenges, then Baymax is definitely the one to slap down onto the base.

disney-infinity-2.0-hiro-baymax-screenshot-02

Since Hiro and Baymax have a special bond in the movie, the guys over at Avalanche Software did this justice by implementing a similar unified power for the two in the game. In much the same way that Rocket Raccoon can jump onto the back of Groot and fire his blaster, Hiro can magnetise himself to Baymax’s shoulders, and attack enemies while the red medical assistance robot flies around the map. This is arguably more powerful than the Roccet/Groot team-up as Baymax’s flight is no joke.

Visually, the two figures look almost identical to their movie counterparts, with little aestetic changes made. Hiro is donning his purple superhero suit, and as mentioned above, Baymax is wearing his red/purple armor. The colour combination of the two characters contrast each other nicely, and the detailing, while not perfect is still quite nice. Little touches like Baymax’s CPU slot appearing on the figure, or Hiro’s utility belt really show the effort that Disney is putting into these figures.

disney-infinity-2.0-hiro-baymax-screenshot-01

One thing I will note is that I wish the Baymax figure was just a little taller. In the Big Hero 6 movie, Baymax absolutely towers over the other characters, but here he is around the average height. It is a minor problem, but one that I feel detracts from the overall look of the figure (especially when put next to Hiro).

Powerful, accurate, fun. Three words that sum up the Hiro and Baymax Big Hero 6 figures perfectly. It is a little disappointing that like the other Disney Originals range, these two didn’t get their own Play Set, especially because Big Hero 6 would have been the perfect franchise to tie the Marvel Super Heroes in with the Disney Originals, but I’m holding out hope that this will change in the future. For now, they are great additions to the Disney Infinity family, and awesome characters to slam down onto the base and play around with.

New Stop-Motion Trailer for Digimon All-Star Rumble Emerges

digimon-all-star-rumble-logo-01

A long time ago, I was hooked on Digimon Rumble Arena for the Playstation. It was simple, yet the next best thing outside Smash Bros. at the time, and it did well to service the booming franchise that was Digimon. Sure, the property has cooled down a bit in the past decade, but fans still love seeing video game adaptations, and Digimon All-Star Rumble looks to be fantastic thus far and if you enjoyed the past “Rumble Arena” titles, this should definitely hit that nostalgia spot due to its similar stylings.

Recently, Bandai Namco released a trailer for their latest title, featuring a stop-motion segment with Veemon and Agumon, which is honestly a nice, fresh take on advertising. Of course there is some gameplay footage mixed in as well, and you should definitely give it a look down below. Digimon All Star Rumble is set to release on November 11th for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

Big Hero 6 Review

big-hero-6-poster-01

Big Hero 6
Studio: Disney Animation Studios
Distributor: Disney
Formats:  Cinema 3D (Reviewed), Cinema 2D
Release Date: November 7th, 2014 (US), December 26th, 2014 (AU)

Overview

When Disney announced that they were making Big Hero 6 I’m sure I’m not the only one who was a little bit surprised. Big Hero 6 is one of Marvel Comics most obscure and out-there properties, so choosing to adapt it into a full-fledged animated movie was unexpected. Now we have Big Hero 6 the movie and while it strays away from the source material, the end result is a charming movie that has the perfect Disney mix or charm, humor, likeable characters and enough emotional impact to soften even the coldest of hearts.

big-hero-6-screenshot-01

Story

Big Hero 6 follows a child engineering prodigy – Hiro Hamada, who despite his intelligence has no drive or passion in his life. Worried that Hiro is squandering his talent and is at risk of ruining his life, his older brother Tadashi takes him to San Fransokyo Tech to introduce him to the robotics department, its students and their legendary professor Robert Callaghan. With a newly recharged passion, Hiro decides that he absolutely needs to be a student at the school.

After creating an amazing series of “microbots,” (think sci-fi nanobots but a little bigger) as part of his showcase entry to gain admission into the school, a fire rocks the auditorium that the showcase is being held in, and Tadashi rushes inside to save his professor. The fire engulfs the entire building and both Tadashi and Calaghan are caught in it. Hiro falls into a deep depression following the loss of his brother, and sensing his distress, he is aided by his brother’s work in progress medical aid robot – Baymax.

Hiro discovers that his robots that were initially on display at the university were stolen instead of destroyed in the fire, so he sets off on an adventure that has him crossing paths with a myserious villain. Baymax is always following alongside, keeing Hiro safe from harm and trying his best to aid his new friend. Hiro and Baymax are later joined by some of Tadashi’s classmates as they form a super team to uncover the truth behind the fire, the stolen robots and a whole lot more.

big-hero-6-screenshot-04

Big Hero 6 is a super hero origin movie but more than that it is about a boy who has suffered a great tragedy and his new friend. Hiro and Baymax are without a doubt the focus of the movie here (often to the detriment of the other characters, who at times feel like they are nothing more than screen filler). Baymax is everything you would expect from a Disney side-kick; loving, caring and more than a little bumbling. His actions all feel kind, calm and hilarious which is made all the more impressive considering his face is made out of two circles and a line joining them.

One of the pivotal moments in the story involves Hiro and Baymax in what I will call a “Superman 2” moment. Without giving too much away, Hiro makes a decision that impacts not only himself, but Baymax and the entire team in a very negative way. However, when he is at his lowest point they are open to the greatest change and after seeing a series of video recordings of his brother, Hiro begins to understand what it takes to not only get over his brother’s death, but how to keep his spirit alive.

Big Hero 6’s story is a little cliché in this day and age, but there is enough to it to keep you enthralled and emotionally invested from beginning to end. The characters all get their time in the sun, and the film’s not to subtle message that relying on your friends during times of trouble is ok, is a brilliant one to teach children.

big-hero-6-screenshot-05

Visuals

Visually, Big Hero 6 is a sight to behold. Disney have developed more than a few new tricks that they implement here that really make this film come to life more than anything else before it. The film uses a very similar 3d animation style to last year’s Frozen but takes the look and feel so much further.

The fictional San Fransokyo manages to capture the look and feel of both its very different muse-cities (Tokyo Japan, and San Francisco USA) while merging them into a cohesive whole. Not only that, but San Fransokyo is absolutely bustling with life. There may be more characters on screen than any movie I’ve ever seen before and at no point in the movie did I notice any two background characters that looked alike. The massive, unique background cast really helps this city feel alive and real.

Characters are all brightly coloured and have that signature look that makes Disney characters iconic for generations. The sci-fi/futuresque technological marvels that are present in the movie really help it stand out from other Disney properties and give it a life of its own.

The most impressive part of the animation however is the fact that audiences will fall in love with Baymax, despite the fact that he is nothing more than a giant marshmallow with two black dots for eyes. Although this is a joint success between the visuals, the story and the voice work.

big-hero-6-screenshot-06

Audio

The voice work in Big Hero 6 is really stellar and unlike many recent Disney Animation Studios pictures, isn’t filled with massive a-list celebrities. The fact that (aside from a couple characters) I was unable to pick where I had heard a voice before really helped me get absorbed into the experience all the more. Hiro and Baymax are voiced expertly by the dynamic duo of Ryan Potter and Scott Adsit, and together their friendly chemistry is outstanding. The most notable voice in the film is probably T. J Miller (famous for his appearance in Transformers: Age of Extinction, and Silicon Valley) who voices the comic-book loving Fred. Miller’s performance almost outshines the rest of the cast, and he sounds as thrilled to be a part of the team as his character is.

big-hero-6-screenshot-03

Overall

Big Hero 6 it the start of something really special for Disney. Not only does it show that they can adapt really obscure source material, but they have created a brand new world filled with colourful characters that will surely lighten our eyes for many years to come. The visual techniques used to bring Hiro, Baymax and the rest of the group of San Fransokyo to life are absolutely astounding and the emotional connection that they were able to create is nothing to scoff at. Although we are still about 6 weeks from getting this movie down under, it is one that you really need to have on your radar.

StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void Revealed at BlizzCon

starcraft-ii-legacy-of-the-void-screenshot-001

The final chapter in StarCraft II was unveiled at BlizzCon 2014. StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void is the Protoss’ chapter, picking up after the end of StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm. Legacy of the Void is a stand-alone expansion that will come with the new gameplay mode, a new single player campaign featuring Artanis and Zeratul, and new playable units for competitive multiplayer games.

StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void introduces Archon Mode and Allied Commanders. Archon Mode will be familiar to those who played StarCraft on consoles, where two commanders shared their units and base. Allied Commanders is a cooperative objective-based gameplay mode where players will choose legendary commanders from the StarCraft series. These commanders have special abilities and level up as players conquer specially designed scenarios.

Finally, new units will be making their appearance in StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void multiplayer. Two of the new units were revealed during the announcement. The beloved Lurker will return to the Zerg ranks, burrowing deep into the ground and destroying infantry with its sharp spines. The Protoss Disruptor is an anti-ground unit that wield energy spikes. Finally, existing units will be receiving new abilities, such as the Tactical Jump ability for the Terran Battlecruiser.

Blizzard will be announcing the release date and price for StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void at a later date.
