New Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance Battle Systems Detailed

disgaea-5-eng-screenshot- (16)

With the release of Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance growing closer, NIS America is making sure fans of the series get acquainted with a few of the new systems that are being introduced into the tried and true battle formula. For the most part players will still battle in the same way by taking advantage of team attacks and the like, though this time around three new systems have also been implemented.

This includes Alliance Attacks, new team attacks that feature specific characters teaming up to deal massive damage with special moves, the Revenge Mode that gives characters large stat boosts and powerful new abilities when allies take damage or are defeated in battle, and finally the Overload mode that Overlord characters can use to unleash over-the-top extremely powerful skills on their foes when they enter Revenge Mode.

A number of screenshots showing off these various systems can be found below. As for the game itself, Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance is set to be released on the PlayStation 4 in North America on October 6th and in Europe on October 9th.

Disgaea Triple Play Collection Announced for North America

disgaea-4-a-promise-revisted-peta-screenshot- (2)

The Disgaea Triple Play Collection has just been released in Europe but it until today it was unknown whether or not this collection that includes Disgaea 3, Disgaea 4, and Disgaea D2 would be released in North America. That changed earlier today when NIS America announced that they will be releasing the Disgaea Triple Play Collection in North America on September 15th for the PlayStation 3.

With Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance set to be released on the PlayStation 4 less than a month after Disgaea Triple Play Collection‘s release, this may be a great opportunity for potential fans to try out the three most recent games in the series, though be prepared to spend many hours with each title.

X-Men
Developer: 20th Century Fox
Publisher: 20th Century Fox
Format: Blu-ray, DVD, Digital HD (Reviewed)
Release Date: 15th July, 2015
Price: $26.98 AUD (Blu-ray), $19.98 AUD (DVD) – Available here

Overview

Is the future truly set? Can we change the past to create a better future? X-Men: Days of Future Past delves into the uncertainties of the mutant species, the threat of their extinction and the decade that triggered an inevitable war between Homo sapiens and Homo superiors. With the upcoming release of X-Men: Days of Future Past Rogue Cut on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD, fans are invited to travel back in time to see an alternate cut of the original film released in May 2014. Does the additional content change the experience, reconcile the past and unite mutants and humans for the future?

X-Men-Days-of-Future-Past-Rogue-Cut-Screenshot-2.0

Story

The X-Men universe in 2023 is falling apart; a dark and desolate world ravaged by the Sentinel Robots that are exterminating mutants and potential carriers of the mutant gene. A glimpse into the future with Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) teleporting Bishop (Omar Sy) a few days before the Sentinel attack, gives the X-men a few days to take control of battle. Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen) devise a plan to send a mutant as far back as 1973, to change critical events that lead to the future and hopefully ensure a “second chance, a better chance for everyone”. Logan / Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) makes the journey, being the only mutant strong enough to survive the distance. Well, his mind at least is projected back in time, while his body exists in a trance state in the future.

X-Men: Days of Future Past draws together the central characters in the past, while continuing the ‘doomed’ timeline that awaits the X-men in the future. In 1973, Charles Xavier is a lost man (following the events of X-Men: First Class) struggling to accept that a life with walking will come at the expense of no telepathy. Whereas, his “arch nemesis” Erik Lehnsherr is forbidden to use his powers being locked up at the Pentagon, as punishment for assassinating the president John. F. Kennedy. During this impossible time, Logan must bring together these two forces to ensure the fate of Raven / Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) and prevent Trask Industries from creating the Sentinel Robots with her DNA.

X-Men-Days-of-Future-Past-Rogue-Cut-Screenshot-3.0

Despite the government opposition, Dr. Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage) is adamant on moving forward with his Sentinel program and is more inclined to do so, after encountering the mutants during the Summit in Paris. At this point in time Logan, Charles, Erik and Hank / Beast intervene the meeting and prevent Raven from killing Dr. Trask. However, in the process Erik poses as a new threat and directs his power towards Raven. Needless to say, the mission to change the future is delayed and now Charles must turn back to his powers to save Raven and prevent Erik from doing more damage.

Back to the present, the X-men are struggling to hold on to the fort with the Sentinels nearing closer. During the time travel process, Logan slips through time at the sight of a familiar face – Major Stryker (Josh Helman) . Memories of his traumatic past with Stryker snap Logan out of his trance state in the future, where he unintentionally scratches Kitty. To keep the transmission in place, Bobby / Iceman (Shawn Ashmore) advises Professor X and Magneto that they can bring in another mutant to replace Kitty. The team retreat to the old house and find Rogue (Anna Paquin) in the holding cells, being experimented on as a source for the Sentinels’ powers.

During the rescue mission, the Sentinel’s attack and come close to taking down the crew on the ship. Professor X manages to get Rogue and Magneto back safely to the others, where Kitty is released of her duty to keep Logan in the past and take care of herself. Rogue absorbs Kitty’s powers and continues the time transportation, letting Logan know she is there to keep him going.

X-Men-Days-of-Future-Past-Rogue-Cut-Screenshot-0.4

Without diverting from the main storyline, X-Men: Days of Future Past Rogue Cut also features a scene between Raven and Hank, who become intimate at the X-Mansion in their mutant forms. In this particular scene, Mystique asks Beast if his views of her natural self have changed, since he said she would never be deemed beautiful as a mutant in the previous film – of course they have. Lucky for us, the audience can expect to see further into their relationship next year in X-Men: Apocalypse.

In the closing events of the film in 1973, President Richard Nixon announces that the Mutant Issue is in place with Trask Industries at the White House. The Sentinel Robots switch on when Erik makes his dramatic entrance (lifting an entire stadium) to surround the members of the White House. Prior to the announcement, the mutant manipulated the design of each Sentinel with metal on the train to D.C.. In 2023, the X-men do not stand a chance against the fierce army of Sentinels and with each death, it becomes more vital for the path in the past to change.

Visuals

Rising Sun Pictures extraordinary visual effects transform time into a magical space, with awe-inspiring and memorable sequences in the film. One of the more prominent characters that meddles with time is Peter / Quicksilver (Evan Peters), who can move and think at incredible superhuman speeds. During the prison break, the escapees encounter a group of security guards in the Pentagon kitchen and it is here that the audience witness Quicksilver unravel in perfect slow motion.

X-Men-Days-of-Future-Past-Rogue-Cut-Screenshot-5.0

In X-Men: Days of Future Past Rogue Cut, the fluid movement from the future to the past is juxtaposed when Magneto leads the way to save Rogue in the future, while his former self returns to the Pentagon to reclaim his helmet from storage, and thus ultimate power. In the new version, Erik pauses at the sight of the coin, the one from X-Men: First Class that ends the wrath of Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon).

Audio

Composer, John Ottman encapsulates the importance of time in his music, that resonate with the characters journey’s in X-men and never-ending battle. The score titled ‘Hope’ (Xavier’s Theme) is a standout, alongside ‘Time is Up’ in the opening action scenes with the Sentinels. In addition, Jim Croce’s song ‘Time in a bottle’ fits perfectly with X-Men Days of Future Past.

Overall

The theatrical version of X-Men: Days of Future Past Rogue Cut presents an alternate cut of an amazing title. The additional 17 minutes of scenes with Rogue, Magneto, Professor X and Bobby, as well as Hank and Raven, serve as a film extension for fans eager to indulge in more X-men. Initially, the unreleased footage was taken out from the original film due to time restrictions. However, the Rogue Cut manages to draw together the deleted scenes and maintain the core focus of the movie. With the Blu-ray and DVD special features, X-men fans will get their fix with the definitive documentary “Mutant vs. Machine”, X-Men: Unguarded, Gallery and Fantastic Four Sneak Peak. X-Men: Days of Future Past Rogue Cut will be released on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD as of July 15th.

RONIN Review

RONIN
Developer
: Tomasz Wacławek
Publisher: Devolver Digital
Platform: Windows
Release Date: 30 June 2015
Price: $12.99 USD – Available Here

Video Review

Overview

RONIN is a stylish platformer with a twist. Players can stop time at will to plan a difficult maneuver and combat is completely turn based. The game may be the closest thing to a Kill Bill video game you may ever get.

Story

The heroine of RONIN is blazing a path of vengeance to kill five leaders of a shadowy company that betrayed her father. The story is told through a couple of sentences shown before each boss battle explaining the relationship between her father and the target. It is hard to tell a deep story with only a few paragraphs for an entire game, but it is enough to give RONIN some good background.

ronin-screenshot-001

Gameplay

RONIN’s gameplay breaks down into two stages, combat and movement. Movement is played like any other stealth platformer, but players are able to hit the pause button to help them out a particularly challenging movement or to give themselves time to plan. Although foot movement is managed by the traditional direction keys, jumping works a little more like Angry Birds than Castlevania. The player pre-plan their jump with a handy arc, then fling themselves in the desired direction. In the air, the player can use a grappling hook to swing or reel themselves into hard to reach places.

Once combat is initiated, the game switches to a turn-based system. Each second in the game serves as one turn. Each turn, all characters on the screen will be able to execute one action. Players need to take great care, as any single hit will kill the heroine. Once the player chooses their move, the heroine will execute her move, followed by all the NPCs. The jump arc changes a little to display how far the heroine will travel in a single turn. Sometimes a medium sized jump will accidentally hide the fact it will be a two turn jump, which often leads to very sticky situations. I think an easy fix to this problem would be to change the white bar to a different colour when a jump will take multiple turns.

ronin-screenshot-005

The game starts with a single type of guard packing a handgun and quickly introduces new enemies from there. The initial tutorial leaves players with just the bare basics. Figuring out new enemy’s abilities boils down to a trial and error. This is particularily frustrating during the first new special enemy, the red samurais.

Combat is enjoyable. Like chess, RONIN’s combat system requires players to think several moves ahead There’s something really satisfying about strategically jumping around, waiting for that perfect time to strike through multiple enemies in a couple of turns.

ronin-screenshot-004

The game can be played with either a mouse and keyboard or a controller. Both work well, so it will most likely boil down on personal preference. The real challenge with RONIN’s controls is the preview lines for combat and jumps. Though the developer slipped in a hint that reminds players that “the jump arc is a lie,” the actual hitboxes feel like a crap shoot at times. I cannot count how many times I encountered moments where bullets will hit at the heroine’s feet harmlessly that would normally kill her or managed to get shot after moving what seemed to be underneath the firing line.

There are 15 levels in the game composed of two levels followed by a final boss. To progress through the game’s skill tree the player needs to accomplish not set off any alarms, kill all enemies, and not harm any civilians in one playthrough to get the skill point. The skills are an absolute must, as they make later levels easier. This results in a frustrating and annoying conundrum. Levels have only one or two ways to be completed to get all the bonus objectives and combat is unforgiving to errors. To beat the more challenging levels with all bonus objectives, you need those skills, so there is little reason to continue without clearing the previous level perfectly. It would have been a better idea to allow the three bonus objectives to be completed over multiple playthroughs. I never realized how much fun was sucked out of the game until the final level of the game where I was finally free to play the game however I wanted to. That final level was a breath of fresh air that I had been looking for while I suffocated in the most awful limbo of “load last checkpoint” as while I tried to figure out the best way to beat these levels. I finally could bounce around like an idiot and play out my Kill Bill fantasy to my hearts content.

ronin-screenshot-003

Once the game is beaten, players are free to start a New Game Plus. Players start the game from the beginning with all skills, but the levels have their enemy layouts redesigned. Now, all enemy types will appear from the start and players will face off against more opposition. On the flip side, there’s no need to worry about completing every bonus objective.

The level design is a mixed bag. On one hand, the need to completely all bonus objectives really stifle the freedom of choice. On the other hand, there are some genuinely smart puzzles and heart racing moments in the game. My biggest wish was that the elevators moved faster. There are some painfully long elevator rides that really break up the pace of the game.

Visuals

RONIN focuses on simple colours with little shading and a muted palette. RONIN could easily be mistaken for a Saturday morning cartoon. The visual design is so striking, that I often forgot how simple the art style is. Tomasz Wacławek manages to make it feel more than the sum of its parts. Its simplicity doesn’t stop the game from being incredibly bloody. Driving a sword into an unsuspecting guard will spew blood across the room, much like a Japanese anime.

ronin-screenshot-002

The graphical options are pretty limited. The only performance related option is to disable anti-aliasing and V-sync. The game can be played in windowed mode, but there is no option to change the resolution. Yet there is support for Dell XPS LightFX, which makes me feel like the priorities are a little misplaced.

Audio

The sound effects are excellent, though they aren’t anything special. The real draw is RONIN’s fantastic soundtrack. It fits the game well and is an absolute pleasure to listen to for the first 20 minutes of the game. Considering how often I needed to go reload checkpoints and replay levels, I soon found myself getting bored as each level plays a single song over and over.

Overall

RONIN has everything it needs to be an amazing game that only an indie developer could release. The chess-like combat is extremely fulfilling. The art style and plot channels Tarantino’s Kill Bill in all the right ways. Its mix of turn-based combat and platforming is a brilliant idea that is a pleasure to play when all the pieces fall in the right spots. Unfortunately, the game is hampered with some really poor design decisions that makes the game feel repetitive and arbitrary.

Unlimited Psychic Squad: Complete Collection Review

unlimited-psychic-squad-box-art
Unlimited Psychic Squad: Complete Collection
Studio: Manglobe
Publisher: Sentai Filmworks
Format: DVD, Blu-ray (Reviewed)
Release Date: April 21, 2015
Price: $59.98 – Available Here

Overview
Trying to create a spin-off from a popular series is always a risk, especially if you decide to change the tone of the spin-off to something far darker than the original. Zettai Karen Children, also known as Psychic Squad in the West, has been running in Japan for over ten years and with one anime adaptation already released, making the Unlimited Psychic Squad spin-off following the original series’ main antagonist Hyobu Kyosuke could easily alienate fans of the core series or mislead newcomers. So now that the series has been released in the West, how does it hold up?

Story
In the world of Unlimited Psychic Squad very few people are born with psychic abilities that allow them to affect the world around them or interact with others in strange ways. This ranges from teleportation, to manipulating various aspects of their body, reading minds, and even using incredible psychokinetics to destroy things. As such, normal humans tend to be distrustful of these espers, with some believing they aren’t even human to begin with.

Unlimited Psychic Squad begins with a fresh face named Andy Hinomiya, an esper that has found himself imprisoned in a special prison meant for espers and outfitted with various psychic limiting devices. Despite his time there, Andy claims to have very little knowledge about his own abilities and it is only when the very familiar Hyobu Kyosuke appears within the prison walls that things begin to go his way. After partially assisting Hyobu with the rescue of one of his comrades, Andy is invited to join the criminal group PANDRA.

unlimited-psychic-squad-screenshot- (2)

Despite his apparent lack of knowledge, Andy is very familiar with his own abilities as well as the group that he is dealing with. Hired as a special agent with the unique ability that allows him to nullify any esper powers used on or around him, he is tasked with infiltrating PANDRA by a certain organization. Forced to play a role that sees him assisting the criminal group PANDRA in various jobs and putting himself in harm’s way to prove he is trustworthy, Andy must slowly work his way into the organization but there are surprisingly bigger dangers than Hyobu lurking around the corner and even the strongest esper with a cruel streak is going to need some assistance.

Now as I led with earlier, Unlimited Psychic Squad is a spin-off from Zettai Karen Children and while the original series was a bit more childish and portrayed Hyobu and PANDRA as villains, this is a far darker series than the original. That being said, those who have watched the original series will get the most out of this series as they already know most of Hyobu’s past and his connections to the various characters that are working with him and how his plans to try and create a future utopia for espers focuses around a certain Queen.

unlimited-psychic-squad-screenshot- (3)

Throughout the series we see Hyobu walk the line of being incredibly evil as his group willingly kills those who stand in his way or those who try and hurt other espers and a decent person as he also assists those who are in danger from other organizations. It is also quite clear how close he holds members of his own organization to his heart despite Hyobu often appearing like he doesn’t care about what happens to them since his cunning strategies are often planned several steps ahead to make sure things go his way.

Then again, if things do start to go wrong, he often steps in and forces his way through to victory by unleashing his full powers. There is a nice balance found in Andy and Hyobu’s balancing act of spy and villain as both characters are written in a manner that makes them likable enough that you don’t wish to see either character turn on the other throughout the course of the series. This balancing act works great throughout most of the series before the story begins to wrap itself up by going into depth about Hyobu’s past time in the army and what forced him onto the path he is on today and then advancing towards the final, mostly unsatisfying conclusion.

unlimited-psychic-squad-screenshot- (5)

This lack of a fulfilling conclusion comes from Unlimited Psychic Squad being placed somewhere during the last few years of the Zettai Karen Children manga series. When the original anime ended the girls had just entered middle school and when they appear in this series they are still at that point in their lives. It is worth noting that despite The Children, Minamoto, and other BABEL members making many appearances throughout the series and getting into fights with PANDRA or assisting them, they are not the central focus of the series. Instead they serve as solid side and background characters to help establish Unlimited Psychic Squad’s storyline that follows Hyobu and Andy in a series that works well enough on its own to be satisfying for even newcomers even if they will be a bit in the dark at certain aspects of the show.

Visuals
Unlike the original series which was handled by SynergySP, Unlimited Psychic Squad has been given not only a darker story, but a darker tone as well due to Manglobe handling the animation this time around. All of the returning characters have adapted well into this new style with Hyobu and other members of PANDRA benefitting the most from this change as they now look far more dastardly than they ever did before, especially whenever Hyobu removes his limiter.

unlimited-psychic-squad-screenshot- (1)

The background artwork also has undergone a noticeable change in tone this time around. While various environments are still fairly bright and the design of PANDRA’s ship, Catastrophe, is fancy in appearance, many of the areas that the group travels through are dark in nature and convey a sense of danger that makes up the world that most espers must live in. It also is worth noting that there are some rather outstanding animation sequences that take place in Unlimited Psychic Squad as any battle featuring Hyobu, especially during a certain flashback, are portrayed fluidly and really make the series shine.

Audio
Sentai Filmworks has opted to release Unlimited Psychic Squad with only the original Japanese voice track. Thankfully all of the voice actors and actresses from the core series have returned to reprise their roles in this series so fans of the original will not experience any disconnect here while the anime original characters fit in nicely with the rest of the cast.

unlimited-psychic-squad-screenshot- (4)

The background music is fitting enough though doesn’t really standout too much except during select sequences. Thankfully the opening theme “Last Resolution” serves as a great opening theme for the series and a rather surprising one at that while numerous ending themes throughout the series to give viewers plenty of variety.

Extras
This release of Unlimited Psychic Squad comes with a handful of standard bonus features that most fans would expect. This includes all variations of the opening theme as well as the ending themes and credits for other anime releases from Sentai Filmworks.

Overall
Unlimited Psychic Squad explores parts of the world that the original series could never touch due to a generally lighter nature and focus on humor as well as action. By taking a darker more realistic approach to the discrimination and dangers that espers face we see what PANDRA is fighting against under the reigns of Hyobu’s twisted goal of a future while also weaving together a decent enough storyline that is capable of being watched without prior knowledge from the original series.

Amnesia: Memories’ Latest Screens Introduce Shin

amnesia-memories-shin-screenshot- (5)

A new batch of screenshots for Amnesia: Memories were released by Idea Factory International earlier today and this time they focus on introducing Shin, one of the more memorable members of the game’s five possible bachelors.

Shin played a larger role in the poorly handled anime adaptation due to being the protagonists’ childhood friend. Shin is a quiet and reserved young man but his dark past leaves him unwilling to let people see how he feels. Will player’s be able to get Shin to open up through true love? We’ll have to find out when Amnesia: Memories is released on the PS Vita and Steam on August 25th.

Redesigned Ken Revealed for Street Fighter V

Street-Fighter-V-Ken-Screenshot- (10)

Capcom announced earlier today during their panel at San Diego Comic-Con that Ken Masters will be joining Ryu, Chun-Li, Charlie Nash, M. Bison, Cammy, and Birdie as playable characters in Street Fighter V.

While this announcement was expected to happen eventually very few people could have predicted that Ken would be revealed with a redesigned appearance and with an array of new abilities that make him different from Ryu. Ken now uses a mixture of techniques that are described as “aggressive, in-your-face” and create flashy combos that deal massive damage.

To go along with this announcement Capcom has released a large batch of screenshots and the reveal trailer for the redesigned Ken that you can find below.
